Why Man United's Biggest Problem Is Erik Ten Hag

  • Manchester United were a toenail away from arguably the most humiliating defeat in FA Cup history. But despite the manager's assertions that their victory should be celebrated, Coventry City showed four times precisely what is wrong with Erik Ten Hag's management... and why he'll not be able to fix it. FourFourTwo's Adam Clery unpacks the match as a whole, and says it might be time for the Dutchman to move on.

@@TmcksnT there's a difference in "not knowing" and players not even following their own instructions after communicating though. no one expects Rasmus to be a top-tier defender at the back, but the fact that Bruno pointed and told Rasmus to defend the man in front of him, only for them to both commit to the ball as soon as it's passed off is...comical. There has to to be some baseline when it comes to defending. Defending is done as a team, up and down every table in every league. If you can't or don't defend as a team, you ship goals. It's not the sole responsibility of the defenders to protect the goal.

I still can't discern if it's ten Hag being poor tactically or the players having zero tactical intelligence. Most diplomatic answer will be somewhere in the middle. But I trust ten Hag is a tactically astute coach with his proven record at Ajax (people were drooling over his Ajax and often remarked that's how Man Utd should play). The players, well, they've proven record of frustrating 3 previous managers and 1 current manager.

Great example is bringing Antony and Donny from Ajax and they can’t really handle the league, Antony doesn’t do much and gets pushed off the ball like a fly, Donny was just never involved in the game, even at Everton football was too fast.

The weird thing to me is that last season Ten Hag turned Man U around and they got 3rd place and Champions League when all the pundits (and me) said it would take years to sort out the mess. Now that he has actually been able to bring in a few of his desired players, they are actually playing worse.

    • @souradeepsengupta95
      @souradeepsengupta95 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +19

I simply don't understand how he seemed so clear-eyed and decisive last season and is floundering like this now. I can only imagine Casemiro had one phenomenal season left in his legs, and Ten Hag made full use of that. Because the system isn't very different than it was last. Also Rashford, whose drop off a cliff I do not understand -- in terms of goals and assists, he always alternates between good and bad in consecutive seasons, but he has always run his socks off. He is now the worst presser in the league probably.

    • @iankemp1131
      @iankemp1131 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

@@souradeepsengupta95 Yes, it is strange isn't it. I've seen it suggested that his system with a high press needs a mobile back 4 and he hasn't got that without Martinez, leaving massive midfield gaps. Interesting point about Casemiro. It seems as if key players are missing and his preferred system doesn't work, he hasn't got a Plan B. With Rashford I wonder if he's simply fallen out of love with football. He sometimes gets the inspiration again - as for a period under Ten Hag - but then loses it. Snag is that talent isn't enough at the highest level, you need dedication too, and it doesn't feel as if the Man U atmosphere in recent years has encouraged this. That being said it's amazing how they have pulled out some late comebacks - but also late capitulations.

So what? Ole did the same, Mark Goldbridge said Ole should get a statue if he got top 4. He got 3rd and 2nd the first two seasons, where we thought it would take a decade to replace such a incompetent squad and atmosphere. + a bunch of semi finals and finals with a squad EVEN WORSE then this. With key players constantly injured, and players individually choking in key games to an extent never seen before in proffesional football. This is on Ten Hag, the only redeeming thing about his tenure is the easiest carabao cup run we have seen the last 20 years.

Don't agree with you in full. The players at his disposal change from week to week (what was our back line at the weekend again?). How can anyone be expected to produce consistent results relying on the players left with some of those players clearly not upto it? Maguire won't defend a high line, he AWLAYS retreats (for example). Can't think how spaces open up when your senior defender (apparently a 1st choice for his national side) doesn't stick to the game plan.
Martinez out, Shaw missing for large chunks, Mount perma-crocked, Martial the same, Malacia unavailable, Varane susceptible, Sancho throws his toys out the pram, Antony not upto it but fit. McTominay offers little with (look up how many passes he makes per game from centre midfield) and without (see Coventry's 2nd) the ball except a late run when Hojlund's taken the defence the other direction. Then the injury carousel featuring the rest of the defence.
Did you miss him instructing Dalot to go forwards and provide an overlap in the first half, just before Dalot ran forwards and provided an overlap and a cross for our first? Dalot then pointed towards ten Hag during/post celebration?
The options out there aren't much better, the fact that another manager is experiencing difficulties 2 years on from joining for the 3rd time should tell us all something. But some think a manager controls the minds of the players on the pitch who shit the bed and disregard instructions. I'd rather we keep ten Hag over keeping a lot of the players. I like he's brought in Garnacho and Mainoo. I expect we'll see another one or maybe two next season come up and get chances.
I would like to see these players move on:
AWB (too prone to errors and not great on the ball)
Malacia (better using his spot for a young player earmarked to replace Shaw)
Maguire (too slow, not great on the ball, poor communication & awareness, high wages)
Varane (injury prone, as good as he is still, high wages, probably off on a free anyway)
Lindelof (not gonna be better than an option off the bench, prone to errors)
Casemiro (form has fallen from a cliff, still looks off the pace, high wages)
    McTominay (see 2nd paragraph)
Eriksen (offers so much on the ball, but little off, wants to play frequently and won't get that here)
Antony (high earner, mentality isn't right, ability for the prem/europe isn't there)
    Sancho (see Antony)
    Martial (already gone)
At this point we might as well do an Everton/Forest and sell them all on for whatever and spend big take the points deductions.

Last year we had the best defense in the league, you could say we overperformed in most departments. This year we could almost never field our 1st team from last year (at least at the back). Not to mention the reluctance of certain players to put in a shift. The manager was cooking something until he ran out of ingredients and until some of them decided to spontaneously rot prematurely. There's only so many things a manager can fix, think about it, we've been in this position at least two more times under different managers. Not even Mourinho survived it, what makes you think whoever we'll bring in next miraculously fixes everything? Players need to go way before the manager, and history has shown us that.

These analyses always revolve around 20-20 hindsight. The fact is players are not good enough, plays get injured / suspended, players tire, players are out of form, players make "mistakes" (I put it in inverted commas as mistakes come in all shapes and sizes with some being more worthy of the description than others). But you do have to also consider coaches over-complicate things and players fail to understand what the coach wants at times.
The biggest problem at united will always be that toxic dressing room where the wrong players are brought to the club and they end up having strops with the manager or go and post crap on social media. The club is rotten throughout. Ten Hag does deserve some blame but then who at the club doesn't?

The structure needs to be fixed first off all, then we can sort out the remaining problems 1 at a time. When fergie lost the league to city by goals, all he needed was a goal scorer and he won it back. The team has too many problems all over... from the beginning of the season I knew this season was going to be meh. Ten hag did very well last season but his decision to be a turn over team has really messed up this season, injuries to the defenders is also a big issue which most down play because its united and ten hag but the best defence in the league is Arsenal who have one of the most consistent back fours in the league, most especially centre backs... saliba and gabriel and finally add the toxic dressing room. If I'm ten hag I'd forget about the league and start planing for city because that's all that matters. I think the owners should sort out the structure of the club, the toxic dressing, the players and then come to the manager at the end of next season... by then we will be ready to go on all fronts.

ETH, I repeat, shouldn't be immune to criticism all the same. He needs to pull his socks up but, as you seem to say, if he doesn't get at least another year, things won't be helped by the continued managerial merry-go-round.
I don't know what you mean by 'ready to go on all fronts', I must say, though. I think united are miles from having the consistency to be a real force, with it all coming down to the catalogue of problems we've agreed on.
They might take a cup or even 'flatter-to-deceive' again with an unexpected 2nd place in the title race but I'd say they need to keep things realistic for a decade and just work on getting better by degrees. Great video. Really helpful explanation of Coventry changes & good to point out that players not knowing where they should be is the responsibility of the manager.
I think you’re very unfair to Casemiro and Eriksen at 11.07 in the video though. You say they’re not doing anything but they clearly are, esp. Eriksen. Eriksen has just won the header, goes to chase the ball, sees Dalot going to the ball ahead of him so starts to run to Dalot’s previous man and then when the Coventry player gets around Dalot, he stops where he is to be a block to the player who is now on the ball moving towards goal.
And if Casemiro wasn’t standing where he is, there would just be loads of open space in front of United’s goal.

I just found it odd that you went so hard in your criticism of those two players for that moment when (a) I think you’re wrong; (b) you’re clear elsewhere in the video that players not knowing where to be in this defensive set-up is the manager’s fault; and (c) these two players are already getting tons of over the top criticism after this match.

How is none of this down to the players? He brought on Antony to get fresh legs on the right side that could track back and press and he added Eriksen to stay back and control the game with smart passes out of the midfield. AWB was gassed and left for dead by Rashford who could never be bothered to do any defensive work and McTominay floated around at the top of the pitch hoping to run onto something from Bruno. Bruno kept trying to find another goal with Hollywood balls and too many touches.
Yet all of that is 100% down to the manager? These are professionals playing at one of the biggest clubs in the world and they need to be coached on how to slow down play and make simple passes? If your backline is getting overrun and you're 3-0 or 3-1 up and you're too tired to get back on defense, drop back and help out instead of standing on their backline hoping to get the fourth goal. You don't need a manager, muchless an elite level manager better than ETH, to tell you that. They're footballers at what is supposed to be the top of their game. If this is the top of their game then I see 8 players on that pitch not fit to wear a United shirt. I think they know better and have the quality and it was a conscious choice to cruise and just hope that the full time whistle blow early. It was laziness mentally and physically and as much as a manager can and should address that after a game, he can't come on and slap McTominay awake or take the ball off of Rashford and Bruno when they both get the ball nicked off them fort he 10,000th time in 60 minutes. Its embarassing for the players but still we blame one guy on the sideline for bringing on 2 internationals to see out the game.

You can do that even with Eriksen and Antony as holding midfielders(McTominay could do it last season but now he's a shadow AMC). It absolutely is the players and injury. Why did no one mention all this last year when he was winning most games and came third in his first PL season?
Last season Casemiro was good and Rashford was getting goals that would make CR7 proud. This season they've both been wank and Lisandro has been injured as well and we've not had a LB all season. I find it extremely unfair to judge ETH this season.

I love seeing Man U continually press with 5-6 players only, with the entire defence way behind them, leaving loads of space for other teams to play through. I'm not sure how long it'll take before it stops being funny. Keep Ten Hag please :)

Not exactly. ETH's not doing great, but much bigger problems are the ownership, lack of any structure and some of these players. I think they all need to go, but if they're about to fire ETH and keep most of the players, it simply wouldn't change anything. Glazers gone would be the perfect start.

  • @PhantomRaspberryBlower

To me the biggest crime is there is no learning. This has been happening all season. Every other manager in the league knows that they will have space in front of the defence. Even Burnley go to Man Utd and get 15 shots. It is so obvious and he still does not fix it. How many chances have to be given away to realise there may be a problem to be fixed.
You are absolutely right about the complete lack of control. People talk about Man Utd being inconsistent. But they are very consistent in leaving gaps and not controlling games at all.

Idk about you but a PL team aiming for European place, who are leading 3 nil at first half should be able to rest Granacho, Mainoo, etc against a championship team. I assure you with slow CBs who can’t play high line and no natural LB the whole season, player like Mctommnay who does nothing but provide areal threat or poaches goal as a “midfielder” and Rashford who didn’t make a single run, fall back to do his defensive duty, no chances created, just tried to run through defenders but ended up bashing into them and losing possession over and over after all the chances he’s been given by the manager. Not even Pep or Klopp can make these players win comfortably.

Great analysis! I completely agree with the conclusion, however I think that he did attempt to control the game by bringing in Eriksen. Not defensive side of the game, but my understanding is that ETH believed that with Eriksen they are going to dominate the ball, which did not happen.
Now question is why it did not happen, and to me the answer is twofold.
First, Eriksen is not concentrated enough, currently just sucks both on the ball and off the ball. Why, would be an interesting question.
Considering how many players have became worse after coming to United, despite managerial changes suggests something about club culture.
Second, poor decision making by offensive players. There was Antony’s unnecessary loss of the ball where he went for glory and achieved nothing. Rashford has been doing that for the whole season. The team is unable to control the game on the ball as well. And I think, that is what ETH wanted and failed. But if experienced players are unable to understand their responsibilities, I cannot reallly comprehend how many things must have gone wrong.

I don't understand why he took off our one outlet who could cause panic in the Coventry backline (Garnacho) and bring on Anthony who couldn't cause panic by letting off a fire alarm. He's done this in three games recently and everytime he's done it the game has changed for the worse. If you are going to take off Garnacho then bring on Amad, or Pelistri (before he got dumped out on loan) as both can a) run at pace at defenders so keeps them in two minds, and b) use both feet and C) cross a ball, three things Tony cannot do. I just don't get it.
For next season I'd love a manager who doesn't clearly have favourites (yes I'm talking about you Anthony), and puts some faith in the kids, Kobbie, Kambwala, Hannibal, Amad, Garna, Rasmus, Pelistri who show more passion than the likes of Anthony, Rashford and co

20:20 hindsight and retro analysis is wonderful ;-) IMO the players are not united (literally)....they are, and always have been, a rag-tag collection of 'I love me most' individuals. Glazer prima donna shirt-sellers and social media PR machines. Any 'we are a team' ethic comes second to their 'me, me me culture'.....not all are like that, but many of them are. Ragnick spotted this a long time ago when he called for a need for 'open heart surgery'. These players have done for 5 managers...and you still maintain it is the manager at fault......I don't think so!

Great rundown. So frustrating being a United fan these days. I don't dislike ETH, for what its worth, but I do feel he lacks an alternate plan beyond "this is my way of playing" and because he lacks that plan, this monstrosity is what we're left with. Deep playmaker and a ball-winner as two options for the pivot in midfield, bring in someone like a Todibo or Branthwaite who can actually pass a ball, and finally sign a RW player (Sancho likes left, Antony doesn't possess braincells) and we'll start to click back to looking like a Ten Hag side of old - if he's still here ofc.
Personally I'd give him his final year. One chance to turn it around, no payout when contract ends, and time to allow more managerial candidates to be available. I think he can succeed, but I think he's really missed out by not having INEOS til now and the structure to allow him to spend his time developing his own skillset rather than being a jack of all trades.

Go look at ruud gullit calling TH’s tactics out during the Ajax days and TH would not listen, TH’s teams are easy to counter when they leave so much space
Now the space in the midfield is quite easily why this is happening, mctominay, Fernandez and rashford are not good from a lack of tactical positional discipline. Mctominay’s overall game is lacking, he runs out of position because he wants to bomb up front, he loses the ball allot, when his job is transition the play from the 6 onwards, Fernandez does the same loses the ball and leaves the midfield way to open and there’s no positional discipline from either of them, leaving Mainoo to deal with almost 4 to 5 on 1 counter attack, while rashford doesn’t even counter press when Utd lose the ball in the final third, he jogs and jogs and watches teams start to build up attacks, so when Man Utd get countered rashford doesn’t close down. But mctominay and Fernandez leave the midfield completely open to the counter and Utd are a charity case on giving the ball away over and over and over again.
This video proves these issues, all 3 of mctominay, Fernandez and rashford need replacing which would be a start in helping these issues

Unfortunately we have seen this type of scenario countless of times this season from the beginining of the season in CL games to now, what is a player like Sofyan Amrabat thinking a defencive midfielder sat there whilst ETH is creating is mess at 3-1. There is no way ETH is staying he is too stubborn always poor in-game management; they will not entrust him with another season.

Do not think any manager (willing to come to Old Trafford) will do better.

I don’t think any other team in the league would swap their manager for Ten Hag. I’m a Newcastle fan so clearly the worse they do the better for the rest of us but Man Utd are a huge club and being their manager should be one of the best jobs you can get and therefore you should be one of the worlds best managers. But he’s so incompetent I don’t think any team in the league would swap their current manager for him. You compare that logic to Klopp or Pep or Arteta or someone like Anchelotti and virtually anyone would want them.
    I think says it all.

I think the biggest concern a lot of people have, is that if the manager goes again, the same group of players will be given yet another fresh start and a 'chance to prove themselves to the new manager'. And the vast majority of them don't deserve it. Maguire, Lindelof, AWB, McT, Martial, Rashford, Sancho will all get to stay when we all know you will never win the league with them.
