Oh man all of these look so nice, and the improvements are so needed. Beast cat looks like what I'll be using, because I like fast-hitting weapons, but I'll definitely use the others from time to time thanks to all the buffs
EDIT: They do good dmg after much testing of the demo it seems that beast cats do even more damage then melee fighter cats or on par we will see when the full game comes out.
yeah. this is all pretty cool. im really excited to get to use a few builds in XX, rather than just the naked fighter 'rang cat. that said, ill still probably stick to a naked 'rang cat most of the time. gotta get those deeps.
not necessarily. fighter has the highest damage stat, but assist cats gain support points much faster, and protect cats are a lot more survivable. as for monster hunter XX, all of the prowler types look like they have something going for them, so who is to say. it all comes down to preference.
With Hunters getting the buffs they are in MHXX, these changes were definitely needed to keep Prowlers competitive. Still, though. Holy shit. A whole bar of gauge from one melee string. That's crazy.

You missed the other change to charisma cat. It's Palico Rally support move gives all cats in the party an aerial style jump, just like fighter in fury, for the duration of the buff.
Seriously? Lol. That buff lasts(or did in X/Gen) for 180 seconds(3 minutes). So in addition to +20 attack, 1.2x more defense, it now turns all cats into aerial monstrosities. Using Charisma as a support Palico for Prowlers just got better. XD
Fluffie Well yes, that's true; however, with Palico Rally they gain a multi hitting aerial attack, that does more mount damage and more overall damage on larger monsters, especially with an appropriate Elemental Weapon or Blast weapon.
Awesome video. I'm glad that they touched up on prowler mode in MHXX. I hated it in MHGen because boomerang builds rendered all of the other stuff they were capable of doing obsolete.
Gaijin you forgot to show the charisma cat skill who gives an aerial style evasion to himself and all the cats in the party (I think ...), but the charisma's aerial attack is quite awkward compared to the fight's aerial attack
I just played the MHXX Switch Demo and immediately noticed the shorter startup time on the Prowlers' Herb and Health Horns -- very welcome. Other things: - Charisma cat also gets Aerial-style evades, after doing Palico Rally (which seems to have its own status icon now). - Fury icon is displayed separately, and starts flashing when it's about to run out. - It's still possible to change the angle of boomerang #2, but not as much as in MHX/Gen. In particular, angle it left and it will fly in the same direction as boomerang #1 but return on the other side. (In Generations, I generally use my first-hired Palico as my Prowler. The slow gauge is an ongoing problem, but the particular mix of passive skills on your first Palico is actually great for a wide variety of monsters, particularly Rathians and Garugas.)
Really exciting stuff here. Glad that Assist is no longer the absolute best type to hunt monsters with (Fighter as a close second) and that each prowler is different enough to use. Beast Prowler has finally given me a reason to use close combat weapons instead of just ranged and balanced weapons, so that's a great bonus! MHXX has done some great things for Prowler, and as a full Prowler main, I'm very excited to go through G-rank! MHXX for the west!

I like Beast Prowler the best just because the Beast Mode is damn cool. Although, I'm thinking of using the Guard Prowler as my main. I just love being able to counter attack! Anyway, the team did a great job on making each prowler unique in their own way, so I'll be sure to try and use each type equally. Unlike in MHX which I just stick to the Assist type all the time...
Oh my god, rerollable skills? Yes take all my money pls. Also acorn cannon was so great in MHG, KOs with two shots. Now that we get meter faster.... ALL the KOs! Mount into double shot KO was really good. Now that we can freely mount like this... it'll be so good.
Hello, I’d like to know what ‘Rousing Roar’ actually does, other than negating stuns. What “status boosts” does it actually boost? I want to see if it’d be useful for my healer/buff cat.
So every cat can aim with the boomerangs now which is a godsend (before you were at the whim of the ground elevation. You wanted to position yourself on certain spots to make boomerangs go up and avoid spots where they aimed down outside of the instant reposition for trick shots, which is basically on a downward slope face the upward direction, hold the charge and point in the opposite direction. Your cat will turn on release and fling the rang upward instead of downward, but only for the first shot), but they nerfed the Rangs a bit by changing trajectory and locking you into a direction, which means no adjusting the second rang. Not sure how I feel about that...It's a Nerf, so I'm not happy about it, but the trajectory change makes a bit of sense. Just wish they'd left the readjust alone. Everything else though looks FANTASTIC. Increased Gauge buildup across the board means it's easier to pull off moves and get both Rang buffs active at the start of a hunt as well as throughout it, and the buff to the Air Spiral means you can build that Gauge faster in general. Beast looks like a ton of fun with all the close range shenanigans and charge attack. Furrious on Fighters getting that rapid Spiral and costing less gauge (it costs 4 instead of 5, that is HUGE) will be glorious letting Fighters shine as maxed attackers that can both boomerang and get in close on top of having the highest attack stat in the game for cats, and the Triple Boomerang on Assist, Gathering, and even Healing Cats is really cool. I'll probably use Gathering the most out of those three because Plunderang, but my full main Cat will be either Beast or Fighter. Bomber's Adept Evade is nifty, and Protector's Adept Guard will be really nice, especially since I recently got a nice Guard Cat with all the Guard Boosting skills to let him take less damage and even Guard the lazers. Prowlers got buffed overall even if the Rangs got nerfed a bit, so overall Prowler is going to be amazing. Gonna be tough deciding if I want to main Prowler or Brave Gunlance...
I just realized that one of the main reason the bar charges super fast is the spin attack. It used to only charge on the first hit of the spin. Now it charges all hits. Inb4 bomb cats dominates the scene and 'splode every hun-ehem-monster.
If this is seriously how the gauge build up rate is going to be in the final game, then holy crap cats are going to be CRAZY. Can't wait for the western release!
And I'll have a Prowler build for everything but Charisma. Charisma will be a Palico only and mainly support for Prowler. Now that the gauge is easier to build up, Bombing Prowlers can adept evade(increasing their survivability) and it's easier to get the moves you want on a them, using World's Strongest with them is now safer and will be really rewarding.
And the adept evading with a bomber cat is much more satisfying then adept evading with a hunter, its like the cat is blown away with the bomb lol then roll out of it, its really fun but will take some time getting use to since cats are small so the adept evade and adept guard have to be executed in a much tighter window then on a hunter.
Fluffie The size isn't really an issue as long as the attack would have hit you normally, you are large enough to adept dodge it. With Protection's adept guard does look like it will have a tighter window however; not because of size, but instead because the animation(windup) is shorter.
Scourge and Solace Don't get your hopes up. Not because they might not bring it, but I hear all Prowlers all no longer viable in G rank. Like, a lvl 99 Prowler in MHXX is as strong as a lvl 50 Prowler in MHGen. Since it's a matter of stats, I motion the need to jailbreak the game to fix those numbers. -.-
Melee cats are finally viable. I hate that everyone had such a hard on for Boomerang cats, but now with Beast and maybe Attack and defense cats with some re-rolls they can be viable. And I know you can re-roll skills and stuff, but would you really be able to get Last Stand + World's Strongest on anything other then a Charisma cat? LS is a Charisma exclusive skill, and I didn't see them say anything about teaching more than one skill to a cat, just re-rolling them. Stand to reason the exclusive skills won't be on that re-roll list...
Ikr, I stopped playing as my prowler because someone said its only good if it has the boomerang style :c Using boomerangs mostly does get boring after a while :T MHXX can finnaly change that :D
People just go with what everyone else says. If you ask one of those idiots to break it down and give you the maths of why anything other than a Boomerang cat is trash, they'll just look at you funny like it's so obvious they don't have to explain it. I see soooo many topics breaking down the MV for Boomerang cats and which is the best Boomerang cat, but I myself had to start a topic to ask someone to break down the damage for a melee focused cat with Weapon Upgrade, Crit S, World's Strongest and Last Stand, or just World's Strongest on a non Charisma cat. I got a few people to do some of the maths, but it eventually fell through and we didn't get to a definitive conclusion. If only some big youtuber like Gaijin or Azrekk could humor us and make a video about alternate cat builds instead of the only one the people think is useful. I mean, saying you want to use a melee cat is like telling people you want to use the Axe mode on the Switch Axe when 'theres clearly no reason to EVER go into the axe mode again with all of the new hunter arts and if you do you're stupid for not maximizing damage'. Like it's a sin that I want to use my axe like an axe or that I want my kitty to claw monsters faces off.

Hi Gaijin. I want to ask. You use the new n3dsxl? Have you ever tried recording while the 3d effect is on? Will/Does the effect actually appear on the video that's captured? Because they say they improved the new n3dsxl 3d effect and I guess that can be a fun challenge, hunting in 3d. And we all can see it! ^_^
It's nice to see Furr-ious had it's cost reduced by 1. Protection's Taunt costing 2, 1 in SP mode, really does help maintain SP mode. What's more, because it's easy to keep the effects of SP, Emergency Retreat and Sumo Stomp will be spamable.
If the Bombs send teammates flying too much, either only use Bombing Prowler with Gunners/Boomerang Prowlers, or point out that other weapons(LS, Hammer, DB's, Lance charges, GL, SA, CB Axe mode, IG, anything Pellet, Clust or Crag related with HBG/LBG) do it just as much if not worse.
Also, for Gathering Prowlers, did they nerf the amount you can steal from monsters? Or did you just misspeak? In X/Gen, the limit was 3 items per monster.
Darnit! I was looking forwards to Brave style, but it seems I'm gonna have to do Prowlers again - their just SO fun to play as; even with the no aiming boomerang. Also, I've never had trouble building gauge, so I feel the buff was a bit unnecessary, but am totally willing to abuse it.

Because I'm a massive loot hoarder and used to get the Gold Rath set in the previous game(s) just got the extra loot at the end of the mission I think the GatherCat's gonna be my favorite. You didn't say it directly but did you imply that you can get 4 of those cats and get 4x2 free items from a hunt? If so, that's going to be insane and I can see groups actively going for 4x Plunderang cat hunts.
GaijinHunter can you translate the second move for Beast cats? I tried to find it on wiki but the closest thing i found was Moxie status. It has green star/human body like icon and the animation is similar to tigrex super roar when used.
I love the changes they made for MHXX and look forward to an eu/us release. For which cat i'll be playing, heal/assist/tank for multiplayer and Beast for solo! =)
I wish the Amaterasu costume's head gear was a proper head change (also changes meows into barks & howls), instead of a hood... Also, I saw in a random video that in Monster Hunter Online (that Chinese exclusive one), there's a Dog costume for your Palico...
After seeing this video I am definitely playing this game, I came from MHF(PSP) and I play prowler as main in mhgen(mhx), It's a protector cat I named Bastet with: Taunt, emergency retreat, claw dance, feline comet, piercing and big boomerang, shock trap, and skills: guard S, guard boost, earplugs, boomerang pro, counter boost, critical S, stamina drain. It came from Kokoto after 600 quests looking for it, I call it "The immortal cat" I can't wait to taste it in mhgu(mhxx), I believe prowler is the most powerful weapon mh universe has ever made!
Guard Cat is my main cat, Its a really good cat and I feel like its really underused in comparison with the fighting and assist cats. Its guarding abilities is monstrous. Now Imagine with the level cap increased and the new armor and the adept guard..
I'll probably still go for Beast, just cause it looks cool. Bomb prowler does seem interesting though and Guard prowler too. Might change my mind if I get to try the styles myself.

one question that came up after viewing this again. in the demo, do the other cats aside from the heal one, have any herb horns on them? any of the tiers that is? maybe that second heal is the buff for the healer cat only.
So what exactly does SP mode do? It's something all cats can trigger (and some can do so for the whole team seemingly), but what are the exact stat changes?

that increased guage charge will make prowlers worth using for support on quest other than hyper monster quest. This will make being support viable just not op I like you would say.
I might actually end up using Beast Prowler instead of the fighter one. I almost never used the furrious move, but it's all dependant on if beast gets the pierce/big boomerang combo or not
Regarding beast prowler... I wish their beast mode claws weren't just giant mittens they put on, instead I wish they were their own paws... or is it their own paws and it just looks weird?
Really helpful info. your videos help me the first time mhgen my prowlers are like legends online. My favorite Prowler has Big/Pierce Boomerang, Shock/Poison Purr-sion, Emergency Retreat. has Earplug, Boomerang Pro, and Pro Trapper.
When I join hubs as prowler, I often get kicked. It's always the same reason: "Prowlers are weak and your prowler doesn't even wear an armor" ... Whenever somebody says so, I am crying because of their lack of knowledge....

Beast Mode is a bias-exclusive skill. No bias other than Beast can learn it, just like no bias other than Bomber can learn Mega Barrel Bombay or no bias other than Fighter can learn Furr-ious.

Most of those particular skills aren't what I'd even consider trying to learn/teach a palico (i'm a Fighter-type main) so I completely forgot about it... 😆 e.g. the [learnable] Giga Barrel Bombay exists, so why bother even looking at the [unlearnable] Mega Barrel Bombay (or Big Barrel Bombay)? BEAST PROWLER, FTW!!!
Mega Barrel Bombay is useful because you can throw it. With the Giga, either you get hit and it explodes in your face, or you dodge and it falls where you were. It's high-risk, whereas Mega is much easier to use. Also costs less gauge...

All cats are basicaly aerial even those that dont have an aerial evade. 1 boomerang + melee attack (x) and you build up mount.

Furrious on Fighters getting that rapid Spiral and costing less gauge (it costs 4 instead of 5, that is HUGE) will be glorious letting Fighters shine as maxed attackers that can both boomerang and get in close on top of having the highest attack stat in the game for cats, and the Triple Boomerang on Assist, Gathering, and even Healing Cats is really cool. I'll probably use Gathering the most out of those three because Plunderang, but my full main Cat will be either Beast or Fighter. Bomber's Adept Evade is nifty, and Protector's Adept Guard will be really nice, especially since I recently got a nice Guard Cat with all the Guard Boosting skills to let him take less damage and even Guard the lazers. Prowlers got buffed overall even if the Rangs got nerfed a bit, so overall Prowler is going to be amazing. Gonna be tough deciding if I want to main Prowler or Brave Gunlance...

I just realized that one of the main reason the bar charges super fast is the spin attack. It used to only charge on the first hit of the spin. Now it charges all hits.
Inb4 bomb cats dominates the scene and 'splode every hun-ehem-monster.
If this is seriously how the gauge build up rate is going to be in the final game, then holy crap cats are going to be CRAZY. Can't wait for the western release!
Definitely bomber cat for that bomb evade for me. It's easier to get gauge now so assist and fighter are no longer my go to.

And I'll have a Prowler build for everything but Charisma. Charisma will be a Palico only and mainly support for Prowler. Now that the gauge is easier to build up, Bombing Prowlers can adept evade(increasing their survivability) and it's easier to get the moves you want on a them, using World's Strongest with them is now safer and will be really rewarding.
And the adept evading with a bomber cat is much more satisfying then adept evading with a hunter, its like the cat is blown away with the bomb lol then roll out of it, its really fun but will take some time getting use to since cats are small so the adept evade and adept guard have to be executed in a much tighter window then on a hunter.
Fluffie The size isn't really an issue as long as the attack would have hit you normally, you are large enough to adept dodge it. With Protection's adept guard does look like it will have a tighter window however; not because of size, but instead because the animation(windup) is shorter.
Okay, as a Prowler main in MHGen, this video is such a great thing to see. Please bring MHXX to the West, Capcom!
Scourge and Solace Don't get your hopes up. Not because they might not bring it, but I hear all Prowlers all no longer viable in G rank. Like, a lvl 99 Prowler in MHXX is as strong as a lvl 50 Prowler in MHGen. Since it's a matter of stats, I motion the need to jailbreak the game to fix those numbers. -.-

Melee cats are finally viable. I hate that everyone had such a hard on for Boomerang cats, but now with Beast and maybe Attack and defense cats with some re-rolls they can be viable. And I know you can re-roll skills and stuff, but would you really be able to get Last Stand + World's Strongest on anything other then a Charisma cat? LS is a Charisma exclusive skill, and I didn't see them say anything about teaching more than one skill to a cat, just re-rolling them. Stand to reason the exclusive skills won't be on that re-roll list...

People just go with what everyone else says. If you ask one of those idiots to break it down and give you the maths of why anything other than a Boomerang cat is trash, they'll just look at you funny like it's so obvious they don't have to explain it. I see soooo many topics breaking down the MV for Boomerang cats and which is the best Boomerang cat, but I myself had to start a topic to ask someone to break down the damage for a melee focused cat with Weapon Upgrade, Crit S, World's Strongest and Last Stand, or just World's Strongest on a non Charisma cat. I got a few people to do some of the maths, but it eventually fell through and we didn't get to a definitive conclusion.
If only some big youtuber like Gaijin or Azrekk could humor us and make a video about alternate cat builds instead of the only one the people think is useful. I mean, saying you want to use a melee cat is like telling people you want to use the Axe mode on the Switch Axe when 'theres clearly no reason to EVER go into the axe mode again with all of the new hunter arts and if you do you're stupid for not maximizing damage'. Like it's a sin that I want to use my axe like an axe or that I want my kitty to claw monsters faces off.

Hi Gaijin. I want to ask. You use the new n3dsxl? Have you ever tried recording while the 3d effect is on? Will/Does the effect actually appear on the video that's captured? Because they say they improved the new n3dsxl 3d effect and I guess that can be a fun challenge, hunting in 3d. And we all can see it! ^_^

It's nice to see Furr-ious had it's cost reduced by 1. Protection's Taunt costing 2, 1 in SP mode, really does help maintain SP mode. What's more, because it's easy to keep the effects of SP, Emergency Retreat and Sumo Stomp will be spamable.
If the Bombs send teammates flying too much, either only use Bombing Prowler with Gunners/Boomerang Prowlers, or point out that other weapons(LS, Hammer, DB's, Lance charges, GL, SA, CB Axe mode, IG, anything Pellet, Clust or Crag related with HBG/LBG) do it just as much if not worse.
Also, for Gathering Prowlers, did they nerf the amount you can steal from monsters? Or did you just misspeak? In X/Gen, the limit was 3 items per monster.
It's nice that jumping move after boomerang does good mounting damage.

Darnit! I was looking forwards to Brave style, but it seems I'm gonna have to do Prowlers again - their just SO fun to play as; even with the no aiming boomerang. Also, I've never had trouble building gauge, so I feel the buff was a bit unnecessary, but am totally willing to abuse it.

Because I'm a massive loot hoarder and used to get the Gold Rath set in the previous game(s) just got the extra loot at the end of the mission I think the GatherCat's gonna be my favorite.
You didn't say it directly but did you imply that you can get 4 of those cats and get 4x2 free items from a hunt? If so, that's going to be insane and I can see groups actively going for 4x Plunderang cat hunts.
Unless they change how Plunderang functions, you won't need more than one cat for it, as you can only carry so much of the "Stolen item" item.

GaijinHunter can you translate the second move for Beast cats? I tried to find it on wiki but the closest thing i found was Moxie status. It has green star/human body like icon and the animation is similar to tigrex super roar when used.
I love the changes they made for MHXX and look forward to an eu/us release. For which cat i'll be playing, heal/assist/tank for multiplayer and Beast for solo! =)

After seeing this video I am definitely playing this game, I came from MHF(PSP) and I play prowler as main in mhgen(mhx), It's a protector cat I named Bastet with: Taunt, emergency retreat, claw dance, feline comet, piercing and big boomerang, shock trap, and skills: guard S, guard boost, earplugs, boomerang pro, counter boost, critical S, stamina drain.
It came from Kokoto after 600 quests looking for it, I call it "The immortal cat"
I can't wait to taste it in mhgu(mhxx), I believe prowler is the most powerful weapon mh universe has ever made!
Guard Cat is my main cat, Its a really good cat and I feel like its really underused in comparison with the fighting and assist cats. Its guarding abilities is monstrous. Now Imagine with the level cap increased and the new armor and the adept guard..
I loved Prowler mode in MHGen and now I really can't wait for Generation X to come out.
I'm definitely going to give the Beast Prowler a shot. Against a larger monster like Barroth, those extra moves will be great.
I'll probably still go for Beast, just cause it looks cool.

The Beast is really OP. I just played the switch demo, and i beat the intermediate mode in 14 minutes.

one question that came up after viewing this again. in the demo, do the other cats aside from the heal one, have any herb horns on them? any of the tiers that is? maybe that second heal is the buff for the healer cat only.
So what exactly does SP mode do? It's something all cats can trigger (and some can do so for the whole team seemingly), but what are the exact stat changes?

that increased guage charge will make prowlers worth using for support on quest other than hyper monster quest. This will make being support viable just not op I like you would say.

Poor support cat. My favorite style and they didn't show much change for it in the demo... Here's hoping they get some good passives.
Regarding beast prowler... I wish their beast mode claws weren't just giant mittens they put on, instead I wish they were their own paws... or is it their own paws and it just looks weird?

My favorite Prowler has Big/Pierce Boomerang, Shock/Poison Purr-sion, Emergency Retreat. has Earplug, Boomerang Pro, and Pro Trapper.

Beast Mode is a bias-exclusive skill. No bias other than Beast can learn it, just like no bias other than Bomber can learn Mega Barrel Bombay or no bias other than Fighter can learn Furr-ious.
(just checked) Oh right... Most of those particular skills aren't what I'd even consider trying to learn/teach a palico (i'm a Fighter-type main) so I completely forgot about it... 😆
e.g. the [learnable] Giga Barrel Bombay exists, so why bother even looking at the [unlearnable] Mega Barrel Bombay (or Big Barrel Bombay)?

Mega Barrel Bombay is useful because you can throw it. With the Giga, either you get hit and it explodes in your face, or you dodge and it falls where you were. It's high-risk, whereas Mega is much easier to use. Also costs less gauge...
you cant teach type specific support moves to other prowlers like how you can teach poison purrison or true health horn to other type cats
