  • The Russian Orbital Segment (ROS) is the name given to the components of the International Space Station (ISS) constructed in Russia and operated by the Russian Roscosmos. The ROS handles Guidance, Navigation, and Control for the entire Station.
The segment currently consists of six modules, which together essentially comprise the base configuration of the cancelled Russian space station Mir-2. The segment is controlled directly from Roskosmos's Mission Control Center in Moscow. The six modules are:
    Zarya (dawn)
    Zvezda (star)
    Poisk (search)
    Rassvet (sunrise, dawn)
    Nauka (science)
    Prichal (berth)

Once Starship gets through the bugs, the modules it can deliver could be huge, even the conventional ones.

Or just use two Starship as a space station

A friend told me at a certain time of the day, when and where to look up, and I'd see the ISS- I did it, and right on schedule, I saw it: way too far away to see details ( the only time in my life that I regretted not having a 🔭) but, what intrigued me was its velocity. THAT THING WAS MOVING.

Isn’t Zarya technically owned by the US?

I still don’t think that even if this were possible they could take Zarya. Built in Russia, but financed by the U.S., and construction overseen by Boeing. Again, even if this were possible, I think Zarya would stay.

Yeah. Zarya was made by Soviets, launched by Russia, but it is US property. And while we might choose to drop it in the Pacific, the orcs ain’t taking it anywhere.

"Rugged and reliable Russian engineering" rearing its ugly head (remember that the proposed OPSEK station was supposed to _re-use Russian ISS modules to build it_ )

    • @VG_164

Problem is that the Russian part of the station is essential for keeping the ISS in orbit and dodging debris. There's no way to currently to do this without either Russian progress ships or Zvezda module. If they leave that would basically mean you have an uncontrollable station that would crash into the atmosphere in the near future. As far as I'm aware there are currently no capability from the other ISS partners to do this. Neither the Dragon nor Starliner would be able to because of the placement of their thrusters and Cygnus has too little fuel storage iirc.

At this point, it makes sense to fund space station services and just play hard date on deorbit. That way they can line up investors and we can have a space station that isn’t suffering from old age.

Astronauts would be happy since they don't have to learn the Russian language anymore.

    • @stevegonzo2091
      @stevegonzo2091 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

Yeah. It would be better for our astronauts to learn Ukrainian. Russia no longer has a future. Ukraine on the other hand is full of smart, brave people who are impressing the world with their ingenuity and skills. So there's a great pool of future astronauts from there. We don't need those drunken orc astronauts.
