Big shout-out to the cat for assisting cleaning the tank. 😆🤪
I’ll never get sick of hearing about how awesome Lisa is. Loved that catio video. My cat is scared of outside so she wouldn’t appreciate it she also doesn’t appreciate being anywhere without people.
Thanks John, you and Lisa are great. I had such a great time coming up there and helping you move.
We loved having you! Thanks for the help 🙂
It's good to see you adding a substrate to the big tank as bare tank bottoms look horrible much better
Wow!!!!! Your patience paid off. It looks so great and the fish look very happy.
Great looking tank. Worth the wait. 👍🏻
John, I have to say you have probably one of the prettiest Albino Oscars I’ve ever seen. Usually not a fan of the albino varieties but your is an absolute Beauty
Your new subsrate looks beautiful! for your tank. And it is nice to
see the fish feeling comfortable and enjoying it. Happy that after all the the hard work you are now able to enjoy your fish family!
And they are enjoying it too.😊
Looking so good John , thank you for sharing 🎉
The tank looks amazing!!
I agree with you on the sand. I'll even go a bit further. I hate it. My water never really cleared up in close to a year, I sucked up so much sand during water changes that it ruined the sink and plumbing on my basement sink not to mention the amount of canisters (at least 7) that it destroyed. I couldn't take it anymore, so I changed out to a small grain gravel. It turned around almost immediately.
14:40 😂😂😂 I haven't seen this clip in like 10 years it's hilarious
Respect!
Nothing like the one 25 kg bag of filter sand I´ve carried from my car and up three flights of stairs. Mind you, the bag actually tore open before I could put it in the car at the hardware store. Good thing I had a Frakta bag at hand!
I´ve rinsed the sand and a bag of gravel in the water I siphoned from the tank after a leak test(tank is a brand new Juwel but I wanted to be sure anyway after the trouble I've had to get it delivered). I live in an apartment on the 10th floor so I can't go out in a garden and leave a hose running. Sand was also still a bit dusty when I put it in the tank, but that's not a problem. The water has cleared up very nicely. Now after 2 weeks, there is lots of algae, but that's normal if you start up a planted aquarium and it should disappear.
But respect!!
Btw, I love these little carts you can use ;)
The substrate looks beautiful!
I love Carib sea rocks. Wish I would've used that substrate on all my tanks. Your tank looks great!
It looks fantastic! I’m sure your fish are super happy with it!
Strong work John....looks much better!
Looks great!!!
Wow I like the look of that substrate John and that tank is awesome and the fish in there are very cool and look happy
@ John: The Holy Scriptures say that a good man that finds a good wife is a blessing. Bless you and Lisa, John. And thanks for sharing. Happy Sunday. 😊👍🏾🙏🏾

Not such a fine sand + a group of 6 to 8 Geophagus Sveni and your sand would be spotless. They are stunning and with oscars and severums absolutely beautiful! When you see a well kept adult group, with all the thread fins intact you will fall in love! 6 minimum in your tank size and you should get the full show of their colour 😍
Skoolz of Fish is where I like to go locally, great shop! Bichirs look great in the new tank👍
Nice job John 😜 I just did that myself 🤓🐠🎸
I switched from blue gravel to natural 😜 I love it 🤓🐠🎸
Glad you finally found a solution for this monster tank of yours. I am curious if you've considered adding a wave maker to it? My understanding is you place it on the same side as your intake for your filter and having your outflow moving in the same direction as the waves and that's meant to give you great circulation to keep the detritus from lingering in the tank and give you real clear water. I have seen tanks set up this way and they sure do seem to be super clear.
That substrate in your tank made a huge appearance with the fish and logs.
I’ve used the peace river for years. It is awesome stuff. Easy to keep clean vs sand. Its heavy so or is not easy to suck it in a gravel vac. I set up a 125 South American tank with red head tapajos. I used sand. I hate sand! Looks good but it is a mess. The fish blow it all over the place and it gets sucked into the filter. The peace river is small so I think it will be ok. I may switch and get rid of the sand.
Love the new look.. thinking of changing the substrate in my tank now😊
Yeah, that looks like a really good substrate tnere, and it can now suck in the poop and process it. Great improvement there John
I look forward to these videos John. Very informative and mad respect for doing what you love even through the hard parts. I know it's not easy but you damn sure make it at least look fun 😂
Just a suggestion I think some wavemakers would help you a great deal with maintaining this tank.
It looks great! Who knew substrate could make such a difference 😄
I'm so stoked that you guys visited skoolz of fish I love that shop!
Love how you did the tank. It looks great! Gina
The tank looks amazing John! Love those bichirs 😍😍😍
Looks great, and thanks for the good information.
Awesome substrate I have some in my 55. It’s my favorite substrate I own and yours looks incredible
I use caribsea peace river in all my tanks. As long as they make it, that's all I'll use. Love the stuff!
Nice work! 3 of my 4 tanks have Caribsea substrate! And one 75G has blue sand which was almost impossible to clean!
I live this brand! Been using peace river in my nano tanks for a few years now.
I use to live in Richmond and have to say, Skoolz of Fish is the best place for fish! In your video, you mentioned the fish looked "washed out", try using a darker color sand and/or gravel then the one in your video. You will be amazed at the difference in your fish! Try it out on a small tank and do a comparison video! You will not regreat making the swtich! Fish feel more secure (i think) and their colors "pop" against a dark substrate.
Thanks for this giant Ad on caribsea substrate!!
It's so funny... i just did the same thing with my new tank! I got a bag of larger rounded gravel and a bag of finer gravel of the same color, but I went with the brownish cream to make my panda corys look better.
Nicely upgraded ❤
Don’t worry John hopefully this is the last time for substrate also love the tank
Looking good!
Looks so great! I remember that video when you first added sand to the oscar tank and realized i had the same problem with the sand substrate in my kissing gourami tank. i left my tank bare bottom and even my fish liked it better because he can eat leftover food from the floor without swimming around poop that stuck to the sand. gravel didn't work because all the food would fall out of his reach. I wonder if the smaller grain caribsea gravel would work out for me???
Hey john, i love bichirs too, i have a delhezi, a ornate and a lapradei just under 1ft but im worried if i used gravel of the same size you use, the bichirs might accidentally swallow them while feeding
I have 2 dojo loaches that I absolutely love. The actually let me touch them. They are so cute.
It looks great John
It looks great!👍🏻👏🏻
Invest in a new drive way ! Love the new look of that beautiful tank ❤
Have guppies, mollies, cory and shrimp. Shrimps are breeding. Still have x3 of the original that bred in the tank
Shrimp keep shedding their outer layers.
It might be hard work to clean the filters. But it's worth it.
Looks good
Man that’s amazing!
never seen these, but they are awesome!
I love CaribSea. I have their substrate in every tank I have, including the marine one.
I had a bichir and it was almost 8 inches long. My move to a new home, The Bichir got caught in the internal filter pull down tube. Long story short I just got a new one. A little guy now. I look forward to another 8 yrs. And then 32 more. lol
I was thinking to go bare bottom for my new 220 gallon tank but honestly can’t get over how sterilised a bare bottom tank looks. The fine gravel you’re using looks awesome though
🎉 congrats 🤘
When I first started in this hobby I went through 3 different substrates and multiple losses, until I discovered Caribsea.
Now all of my tanks have it.
Gah! Dude, I love it. Totally, totally jealous.
I've been to schools of fish so that was a surreal clip for me (also its in Mechanicsville not Richmond)
I have kin folk in North Carolina my mom was from there beautiful state
Man, I feel for you washing all that sand. That is the number one thing I hate about the hobby! Tank looks great now, well done! Always been fascinated by that tank in the background of your videos. Was never a fan of bare bottomed aquariums (although I get it if you are a breeder or a store). This just looks better. I love Oscars, had them back in the nineties in my student days. Just waiting to find the space and the budget for a big enough tank.
I've only recently started using Caribsea substrates, and I can't imagine using anything else at this point.
That looks awesome. i think this is the substrate i've been looking for. Would the Peace River be ok for Cory's?
dude, Lisa is awesome 👌 👏 🤩
I use something similar. I use Pea Pebbles from Lowe's. It's like $6 for a 47 lbs bag
Awesome ! So now its a time for some plants ?
I've been using CaribSea in every tank I've put up,, it's by far the best
Im having the same problem with my 175g oscar tank that has sugar white sand in it. But i just love how the white substrate makes my Oscars' colors pop. would you recommend using Caribsea's carolina creek and torpedo beach substrate?
Love their substrate products. I really dislike the bare bottom, thos looks so much better
We’re did you get that beautiful tank
Custom Aquariums 😊
Thanks
Beautiful tank. Not trying to be a wise guy, but if you would have moved your bucket 5 feet to the left when rinsing the substrate you would have been in the shade from the tree. Maybe a little cooler?
Hey, shoot me a text if you would up with too many bags of gravel. I'll totally buy them off you. Not all of them 😂 but definitely some. I have recently picked up a 90 and a 120, and I need substrate for them. I'd just as soon help out a friend than some faceless company. If you have a use for it all, no worries.
i use ada. Power sand, La Plata and Amazonia
Could you do a video on bichirs? I’m wanting to get one but want to be totally educated on them before
Lisa is definition “a keeper”
Can you do a bichir care guide? I’m having trouble finding a video
“Sometimes you gotta suck it up,” and…suck it up! 😅
Caribsea eco complete is the best, just a little too rough for bichir
Question: what’s your opinion on pool filter sand? Why use play sand and not filter sand?
I’ve always used filter sand in everyone of my aquariums no gravel vac ever and never clouds up because it’s so heavy. Just wondering what’s your opinion. Ps been watching for a while love you guys
I keep forgetting that you have a salt water tank. You never talk about it 😜
Wow. All these years and you still don't have gravel rinsing thing worked out. Go to Michael's or Joann Fabrics and buy some cross stitching plastic canvas. Cut it to fit the bottom of the 5gallon bucket. Cut 3 BIG holes in the bottom of the bucket. Glue the canvas in. Set the bucketful of gravel up off the ground and just run the water while you stir.
You should have put in the sand and then pumped out the cloudy water until clear.
If I had that tank it will be small to medium Oscars, Severum and large Angel Fish.
You have plecos with the bichir?
👍🏻👍🏻
That substrate looks beautiful, BUT can be dangerous one day, because all dirty in it can make a bomb.
Are you saying your oscars are 30 years old?! Haha
hello
If you got a 75 gallon or so but real’y want a bichir get a senegalus! They stay much smaller!
I honestly don't think that either sand or other bottom substrate is a problem in the aquarium. You should increase the filtering and get one or even better two wave makers. I always have a lot of sand in my aquariums. Crystal clear water. Then I don't even clean the sand before I dump it in the aquarium, it usually takes an hour before the water is clear again. Otherwise, your filtering is substandard. A simple self-built drip filter is the cheapest and, in my eyes, most effective. But in any case, I think the filtering needs to be increased. Alternatively, the number of fish is reduced. Just a very well-intentioned tip/advice. 👍🇸🇪♥️🐟
I got rays among other fishes in my tank... and Oscars, plecos and more..
I think that's what chewy sales I love chewy cause they make things right any how it's good to know I'm not the only one that made mistakes in this hobby lol
I thought bichir shouldn't be in gravel
Actually, im using play sand from home depot
could you share the name of that fish, type of sea fish right
get a kelberi peacock bass
then itll be done
Substrate mistakes are always the most costly mistakes in terms of time.
