I mean it's cool, but it's so derivitive you know it was inspired, not invented. We iterate all possibilities, of course the low hanging fruit will be performed first. To clarify what I mean by low hanging fruit... I mean simple, direct reference, rather than indirect, as in context, relation or association between the motivated concepts. The mirror move is about the most direct reinterpretation of the mirror as a physical object into a camera technique as a human can make, speaking to no deep relationship, telling no abstract story, etc. I reason this way, because if you made a naive computer program to trivially loop over the data and combinate it, it'd be one of the earliest productions, meanwhile there are such complex relationships that mere binary composition could never hint at it. I'm speaking to rhetoric here, but you can just look around and watch as cliched ideas are repeated by the naive-presumed-clever and know the pattern is real and common. Remember this, and as you're consuming media, the next time you see this effect, you'll know my perturbed outlook is justified. To be clear, I don't mean to knock her, I'm knocking your loose verbage in calling it a game changer. If you had just been accurate, I'd have no qualms or quarrel. Absolutely, honestly it's the stop-motion animators that I give appreciation to... that work is not easy or fast in any way. So much talent and heart goes into those movies!

Amazing. 36 years old and proud to say a nightmare before Christmas is my favorite movie and has been for decades. Dish towels, throw blankets, clothes, jewelry, figures, monopoly, cups, mugs, bags, wallets, socks…. I can go on and on lol. Love this!
Ahhhh thank you so much! You can do so much with paper, it's super versatile! And tbh I actually feel like if you build a structure well, it can be surprisingly durable... I hope I don't regret saying that and the whole thing will now just suddenly fall apart lol.

I think more crafting videos could use cinematic tension. Also I this is great, Tim Burton's directions were to have NO right angles when they made the original and you nailed it.
New challenge: make the most stressful crafting video of all time. I can confirm that this essentially has zero right angles and I love the effect, but wow did that make building a lot harder haha. Was staring at cardboard for 30% longer than usual trying to piece this one together!

Man, LAIKA should absolutely hire you. The attention to detail and strategic building, like with the shingles (something producers would love) would be absolute wins for any stop motion studio.
Funnily enough I did actually apply to Laika a few years ago, they only had openings in the puppet department at the time so I was rejected. Love their stuff! I'm really happy doing my own projects for now though, it's a blast~
@@MechanicalFiend Next to Aardman/Nathan Love, they make some world-class stop motion, and have great storytelling chops. One of my good college friends worked for LAIKA and loved it. But doing TH-cam also gives you a lot of creative freedom you might not otherwise have, sooo... happy either way?

The miniatures and look of TNBC was very much inspired by the classic German film, 'The Cabinet of Dr Caligari.' Burton is a huge fan of early German expressionism.
Yes! It's actually pretty obvious watching the film, I mentioned that in the voiceover but ended up cutting it out. Some scenes in NBC are just so reminiscent of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (and of course the style of the set).
Super fun! Also, if you're ever looking for extra cardboard material to work with I have a tip! If you go to any 24hr Wal-Mart after 11pm (around midnight or 12:30 would be best), just grab a buggy and walk around the store looking for the overnight stockers. Each department will have a shopping cart filled with broken down cardboard boxes, and the workers are happy if you take a bunch of it as that means they won't have to take the cardboard to the bailer in the back as quickly. I would always do this when I needed boxes for moving in my 20s and just fill-up a buggy to the brim with broken down boxes and buy a roll of tape to tape them back up, but these days I go get a ton of free boxes to use for modeling projects (also free shipping boxes if I sell something online).
Totally, honestly you can ask at a lot of different stores and they'll be happy to give you cardboard. I've moved a ton doing that as well, gotta collect those boxes! I don't need to most of the time for models now, they're so small and take long enough that the stuff I save from packaging now is enough. But if I'm ever building a full size cardboard set one day, you know I'll be hitting up stores hahaha!

You could reach out to a metal working TH-cam channel about creating a pair of specialty scissors just for you. 2. Try out this bizarre and cheap little cutting tool: 'GYRO-CUT craft and hobby tool.' Let me know if you get one and if it works! 3. A company like Cricut would probably send you a cutting machine for free if you reached out to them. I am not sure if you'd be interested in a computer driven cutter, but it would make shingling a lot easier. Excellent work all around, cheers D!

I felt like I was watching a really good indie documentary movie on how to make Jack Skeleton’s house. The cinematic Quantity is brilliant, editing is fantastic, main character is super lovable and funny, and the music is on point! All and all 10/10 would watch again

Unreal! the detail is astonishing! Makers are not all alike, we all have different mediums, but at least we can recognize when someone is gifted. This is fantastic! I can’t express that enough!
The opening lyrics was so cool! And of course the whole video and build is the usual incredible quality. I would like to mention one thing though, why didn't you airbrush the shingles with a dark grey from below after you bent them out. That way could have spare the painting with the brush and all the other shingles had a little shadow on the edge. And one more thing. I'm a huge fan of this movie for ages, but I could never tell to which holiday it fits more. :D Usually I watch it in christmas time.
To be totally honest I was going to airbrush pieces, but I decided not to because the setup is in my garage and it's like 400 degrees here right now lol. Definitely would have been a good solution though, maybe for future roofs! As always so glad you can enjoy my friend, doing the intro song was honestly so much fun! As for the holidays, why not both? Nightmare was filmed only about a block from my Custom Photo Lab here in San Francisco. They'd shoot on set 35mm stills to check the lighting. We'd get a few color rolls at the lab to process, print contact sheets, and also 8x10's and 5x7's. When you hand print, you're always testing, getting close to finals. Which meant extra prints laying about. Which wound up in my place somehow. A bunch.
Wow wow wow that's so cool, sounds like those would be awesome pieces to have around. It's such a great film, all the love that went into the sets, characters, etc. really shows. You are lucky to have them!
Tbh that's what I'm super passionate about, being able to do it with miniatures is just a bonus! So happy to hear that though, always really glad you can enjoy everything!

another thing you could do for narrow joints like the tower: use a thin gauge wire on the inside. good way to do that is twist several wires together at a singular point, and have them spread out: this will give you like a two-sided funnel kind of frame that you can glue to the tower and the base
They had a team make it, and you alone remade it- with materials you had on hand and no clay. (maybe a clay base would be heavier than rocks?) And it looks amazing teetering over the shelf, Awesome!
They also had to make a bunch of versions of it on a much bigger scale, so there's that. I usually use rocks because they are available and not as expensive as something like clay, but yeah there are probably better solutions! Thank you so much for all the super kind words~

I think that it may help you to get a jewelry saw, so you can use wood or maybe some kind of metal sheet, and all that stuff to reinforce what ever you need

I think more crafting videos could use cinematic tension. Also I this is great, Tim Burton's directions were to have NO right angles when they made the original and you nailed it.
New challenge: make the most stressful crafting video of all time. I can confirm that this essentially has zero right angles and I love the effect, but wow did that make building a lot harder haha. Was staring at cardboard for 30% longer than usual trying to piece this one together!

Man, LAIKA should absolutely hire you. The attention to detail and strategic building, like with the shingles (something producers would love) would be absolute wins for any stop motion studio.
Funnily enough I did actually apply to Laika a few years ago, they only had openings in the puppet department at the time so I was rejected. Love their stuff! I'm really happy doing my own projects for now though, it's a blast~
@@MechanicalFiend Next to Aardman/Nathan Love, they make some world-class stop motion, and have great storytelling chops. One of my good college friends worked for LAIKA and loved it. But doing TH-cam also gives you a lot of creative freedom you might not otherwise have, sooo... happy either way?

The miniatures and look of TNBC was very much inspired by the classic German film, 'The Cabinet of Dr Caligari.' Burton is a huge fan of early German expressionism.
Yes! It's actually pretty obvious watching the film, I mentioned that in the voiceover but ended up cutting it out. Some scenes in NBC are just so reminiscent of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (and of course the style of the set).

Super fun! Also, if you're ever looking for extra cardboard material to work with I have a tip! If you go to any 24hr Wal-Mart after 11pm (around midnight or 12:30 would be best), just grab a buggy and walk around the store looking for the overnight stockers. Each department will have a shopping cart filled with broken down cardboard boxes, and the workers are happy if you take a bunch of it as that means they won't have to take the cardboard to the bailer in the back as quickly.
I would always do this when I needed boxes for moving in my 20s and just fill-up a buggy to the brim with broken down boxes and buy a roll of tape to tape them back up, but these days I go get a ton of free boxes to use for modeling projects (also free shipping boxes if I sell something online).
Totally, honestly you can ask at a lot of different stores and they'll be happy to give you cardboard. I've moved a ton doing that as well, gotta collect those boxes! I don't need to most of the time for models now, they're so small and take long enough that the stuff I save from packaging now is enough. But if I'm ever building a full size cardboard set one day, you know I'll be hitting up stores hahaha!

I was thinking during this that I wish there were scissors that were like zigzag ones, but could cut out a shingle shape edge. Would be so helpful!

You could reach out to a metal working TH-cam channel about creating a pair of specialty scissors just for you. 2. Try out this bizarre and cheap little cutting tool: 'GYRO-CUT craft and hobby tool.' Let me know if you get one and if it works!
3. A company like Cricut would probably send you a cutting machine for free if you reached out to them. I am not sure if you'd be interested in a computer driven cutter, but it would make shingling a lot easier.

I felt like I was watching a really good indie documentary movie on how to make Jack Skeleton’s house. The cinematic Quantity is brilliant, editing is fantastic, main character is super lovable and funny, and the music is on point! All and all 10/10 would watch again

The opening lyrics was so cool! And of course the whole video and build is the usual incredible quality. I would like to mention one thing though, why didn't you airbrush the shingles with a dark grey from below after you bent them out. That way could have spare the painting with the brush and all the other shingles had a little shadow on the edge. And one more thing. I'm a huge fan of this movie for ages, but I could never tell to which holiday it fits more. :D Usually I watch it in christmas time.
To be totally honest I was going to airbrush pieces, but I decided not to because the setup is in my garage and it's like 400 degrees here right now lol. Definitely would have been a good solution though, maybe for future roofs! As always so glad you can enjoy my friend, doing the intro song was honestly so much fun! As for the holidays, why not both? It's never a bad time to watch Nightmare Before Christmas haha~

Nightmare was filmed only about a block from my Custom Photo Lab here in San Francisco. They'd shoot on set 35mm stills to check the lighting. We'd get a few color rolls at the lab to process, print contact sheets, and also 8x10's and 5x7's. When you hand print, you're always testing, getting close to finals. Which meant extra prints laying about. Which wound up in my place somehow. A bunch.
Wow wow wow that's so cool, sounds like those would be awesome pieces to have around. It's such a great film, all the love that went into the sets, characters, etc. really shows. You are lucky to have them!

another thing you could do for narrow joints like the tower: use a thin gauge wire on the inside. good way to do that is twist several wires together at a singular point, and have them spread out: this will give you like a two-sided funnel kind of frame that you can glue to the tower and the base
They had a team make it, and you alone remade it- with materials you had on hand and no clay. (maybe a clay base would be heavier than rocks?) And it looks amazing teetering over the shelf, Awesome!
They also had to make a bunch of versions of it on a much bigger scale, so there's that. I usually use rocks because they are available and not as expensive as something like clay, but yeah there are probably better solutions! Thank you so much for all the super kind words~

Thank you for the subtitles. I am watching this at night because I can't sleep and it helps keep the volume low which is important because it is warm and I have to have my windows open to be remotely comfortable but I don't want to wake the neighbours and the subs help.
