As a retired library clerk - school and public, I can't emphasize enough that storing books in cardboard boxes in a unheated metal storage container for two years is a recipe for disaster. You might as well take all the boxes you have just packed and take them right away to the recycling depot and save yourself the trouble two years from now. There must be an empty room (heated) in your chateau that the books can be stored on bookshelves until you are ready to display them. Please listen to all your subscriber's advice.
I was just going to write a similar comment when I saw yours. furniture that is vaneered may peel or ripple. containers are not properly vented against humidity. BEWARE
I am a library technician and I have to agree. Storing the books that way is a recipe for disaster. That collection needs to be severely weeded!
Totally agree. I had in-laws who stored books in an attached and insulated garage in the mild climate of California for 2 years and when the cardboard boxes were opened the books went straight to the trash. MILDEW AND MOLD
Exactly what I was going to say... agree 100%
Why no Phillip?
I fear the books will get damp and moldy in the containers, because they don’t have good ventilation.
My first thoughts.
Perhaps they can run some electric and use dehumidifiers in the shipping containers. But, I hope they don’t leak during rain. I, also, wonder how much heat the glue in the books can handle.
Perhaps box books and store in the attic?
My thoughts too. Unless some form of ventilation. The panelling may warp too🤔
Both the books and the wood will need moisture and temperature control.
Why Not Use Nattie’s and Jerry’s unfinished Apartments for storage of items susceptible of damp issues! 😊
I'm with all the other commenters, please don't store your books and panelling in containers, due to heat and humidity! Take it from someone who's had the regretful experience of losing practically everything in a container! The porcelain will be fine.
Stephanie, I’ve never seen so many comments in agreement that the shipping containers are not a good idea. I hope you take these comments on board.
Stephanie, PLEASE, PLEASE reconsider using containers.
At work when there was a remodel/addition all types of things were stored in containers like you are doing. When it was time to move everything back in, almost everything was ruined from moisture, damp or heat or cold. Even with professional cleaning, the cloth items had to be thrown out along with the books. It was a disaster
oh dear
@@curiousbug24 They have a really big house and are "maximalists" They dont need to get rid of anything, just move stuff about a bit (indoors)
Be careful of your books and paneling in the containers. Humidity and dampness (condensation) could become a problem and damage quite a bit.
And make it critter proof. Don't want to imagine the damage they'd do!
The container needs bricks to be off the floor, you will end up with damp
Friends did this and I’m afraid to say the items deteriorated due to changing temperatures and what had been previously been stored in the
containers. Maybe self storage would be better for the more precious items.
You would need a climate controlled environment for the books. Books need humidity to be below 50%. Otherwise, books will mold. Fabrics and wood may react to humidity as well.
Agreed. I moved my belongings into a pod and within a month absolutely everything was covered in mold.
Containers are not great for storage as they draw moisture inside. Afraid everything will get mold damaged
maybe if they install air vents it would help?
Especially if they are more than one voyage old. For books I would use the highest grade used container but I think these containers have been kicking around for a long time. It will be okay as long as they install a Whirly Bird. Grant will know what I mean 🦘 😊
I‘m sure Amaury will make sure the paneling is being stored safely.
@@Ago2904 I hope so! I just know what these storage containers can do to cloth, paper and wood
The books and paneling will be ruined in a container: we own a restoration company and we preserve anything that has been damaged that’s covered by insurance. I think you need to use this as a short term solution for a month or two and find a better alternative or you will lose everything from mold and humidity.
I'm reading through the comments and see that others are just as worried as me about your beautiful belongings getting damaged in those containers. If you don't have any friends with free space that you can rent from them to store your things, then I would suggest renting a temperature controlled storage unit. Given how much you spent on the paneling alone, taking better precautions is absolutely worth it.
I doubt there is anything nearby, but with some preparation the containers could be made go work for short-term storage.
@@DrRusty5 metal condensates and moisture can collect rather quickly. It really depends on the temps outside. I don't think it's worth the risk.
That attic has already been cleared of books once. I can't believe there is nowhere to store stuff than in containers which seam a long way off
You can't leave books in a container outdoors for two years, the damp will get to them.
My family also thought storage containers were the perfect solution but it was a disaster! 😮
🍃 Sounds like you’d better rethink the storage bins❗️ I’m surprised Amaury trusted putting his beautiful paneling in there. So many horror stories, so it must be true!🌳🍃
100% correct . I worry the Summer heat and humidity will damage paneling inside containers . Heat gets very intense and dries out old wood causing splitting and warping .
Glad to see I'm not the only one horrified at the thought of storing antique wood paneling, furniture, and books in shipping containers. I really hope she reads these comments and does some research.
Amery moved all the paneling inside to acclimatise to the chateau if you put them in the containers you'll be going backwards. Also I few for the extreme heat and cold and how they will suffer
I watch your blog every day it is on. I usually do not make comments, however I feel this is important. I was a sales representative for large international moving companies for 30 years before I retired in 2013. I am concerned about the containers u have leased. These containers have no ventilation, they do not breath & will become extremely hot in the summer months. I am concerned about the antique paneling. The heat could cause it to buckle. Also the finish can melt & stick to fabric, paper & especially plastic. Those containers can get up to 110 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Blessings. Nancy Straub
DO NOT PUT YOUR BOOKS IN THE CONTAINERS! You will regret it, deeply, when you lose all of your books from the damp!
Honestly horrified at the idea of you putting furniture, books and panelling in a shipping container. Every thing will be ruined by damp
I fear that too, especially as they are only in cardboard boxes 😶
And in summer - and summer is coming - the heat is far more intense inside those metal containers so is likely to be harmful re any wooden items. I had not realized HOW very very hot it can become until I opened mine up on a warm sunny day.
It would have been far better if I had had built a budget big shed made of wood but with internal insulation and with enough height in the roof for air flow and some insulation up there too - especially above - to keep the temperature more regular.
Put the containers under a roof.
Why spend time hauling boxes of books, beautiful paneling, chairs, etc all the way to storage containers when you could pickup and clean a couple of the servant's rooms. Yes they are in bad condition but they would be closer and you could put heaters on a timer. By the time you haul everything outside you could have prepared (cleaned out & better than metal containers) several rooms and it would be safer for your items, protected better and a lot easier to get to.
If...your items become damaged from being in hot..cold..wet..damp containers; would your insurance pay for replacement? They would if stored in the Chateau. Please think about it. Ask your other Chateau owners if they would do what you are planning to do.
Not a good😊😊 0:00 😊
I so hope that Stephanie reads the comments. I completely agree with all the comments about storing in containers. The books will be moldy and ruined and the wood panels ... OMG just don't do it!!
Those shipping containers are susceptible to growing mold. My neighbors had to destroy everything that they had stored in theirs.
Dear Steph. Please see and hear all the concerns of your subscribers.. the containers are not the way to store precious furniture, panels and books. Please rethink this. Nothing like the Ozzie humour! It’s great to have Grant back, whipping everything in place! And you’ll get to have fab barbie’s. Love to you all ❤
I am sorry to say, I have also experienced the loss of items I stored in a shipping container. One year later, and all items that were not impermeable were damaged in some way. I threw a ton of it away. We had even had our container professionally spray-insulated, to the tune of $10,000 US dollars, and did interior work to make the inside pest-free and nicely sealed. We even installed a ventilation fan. It was filled with spiders and dust, and all summer it was 120° F inside. I live in a very arid area, and there were still some cloth items with some mold. I did recover some furniture and other things, but if it isn't porcelain or metal I would be wary. Even with the amount of work we did to it, most of our items were not in as good of repair as we would have hoped. We didn't have any water leaks, but that's what encasing the whole thing in 10k worth of commercial spray insulation will do. If we had maintained constant temperature control, maybe it would have worked better. We also checked on it often, though at the time there was nowhere else to keep our things. I would not recommend putting antique anything, or books, or fabrics, in a container for any length of time!
Moisture can really build up in those containers and can cause mold and mildew.
We ruined our books stored in a container, they were in boxes.
They can be very damp. I personally would be wary of storing the panelling as well as the books.
We had to throw all our books away only after 1Year in a container mould and ruined ❤️🇬🇧
Old transferware can get moldy too
All these items should be kept in temperature-controlled storage.
❤
STEPHANIE!!
I know first hand that those containers are prone to leak! When my parents did a major remodel to their home they decided to put all of the furnishings and linens in 3 huge containers. They had carefully selected the containers from the port in Savannah then put them in the shade of the big water oaks close to their home. After the remodeling was completed the containers were opened on move-in day and they found that numerous pieces of furniture had damage. For months the containers leaked!
All of the bed linens were stored in the container along with fabrics, etc. All was molded and mildewed. It was sickening to say the least. The leaks were found, but at that point it was too late. In hindsight tarps should have been put over the containers as a preventative measure.
Live and learn.
I hope this will save you a heartache. ❤
That's why you should regularly open your container
Adding to the alarm bells on storing the books in the containers due to damp and the pressure of weight. Boxes are where books go to die. I had mine stored in a facility for 6 years and when I finally got back to them they were in such bad shape and felt 'dead' to me. I got rid of the lot.
I just re-watched an old Vlog today. It was Grant’s last day at the chateau and you and Michael Potts were cleaning up all of the books and corridor in the attic. At the time it seemed like you made huge progress. So I was surprised to see you doing it again in the same place and with Grant of all people. Fingers crossed the book hoarding stops
I thought I'd seen this...
More than a month with your weather! Nothing in those containers are gonna be mold free. So worried
Agree, big mistake
I have done exactly this and paid the price. Basically had to toss about 60% of the books, mostly mould but also containers are not rodent & insect proof and had damage from both cockroaches and mice as well. Don't do it if the books and panelling are important to you. I will say I was out of country, stored the containers on my parents property and they were not regularly checked but even so really don't recommend.
Decluttering AGAIN 😅🤣😂😆😄😏
Beware of a HUGE damp problem and lack of ventilation. Everything you're storing is very susceptible to rot and warpage.
The books and furniture would be better off in the attic than in the containers with humidity and condensation.
Books would be best in a room and run a dehumidifier.
I kept a house load of furniture in a storage container for 8years .
All paper leather , fabric / clothing , paintings , were completely ruined 😢
I agree with what everyone is saying. Containers are notorious for leaking water. I just fear for the paneling.
And can I be frank? Why don't you consider just taking the old dining room chairs to the Brocante? You really might consider downsizing rather than stuffing them into ugly, leaky containers for a few years.
Gosh do not put the books etc into a metal shipping container. You have already seen what damp can do to the Chapel which has had to have dehumidifiers put into it to dry it out.
Are you not worried about condensation ruining the panelling? Books, soft furnishings etc? What about the Narnia attic?
Yes, the attic should be used.
Stephanie please do not put books to the container. I work as a librarian and it is a big NO-NO to keep books away from proper ventilation and heating.
The paneling and the books will rot in those containers. Mold, damp and mice will destroy everything. I know this from experience.
Those containers will do excellent job of "passive" decluttering. Two years and the contents will be reduced to landfill material and no one will have to make any painful decisions whether or not to keep the items. Haul them off, Poof - be gone and Voila! problem solved.
I too am worried about you storage plan. Especially the paneling, damage to those would be catastrophic.
Oh Steph please reconsider the containers! Those books can get completely ruined and they can infect other books from the chateau with mold later, I really hope you will find another place to store them 🙈
I can’t imagine having a whole vast chateau and needing to store valuable items in shipping containers that can easily be broken into away from the chateau 🤔
Agree😅
Just a thought - maybe Marie could use a "Heat Lamp" over her new work surface so that when she is dishing up her lovely meals, the food does not get cold while she is plating up
Heat Lamp on the new work surface.. Great idea.
I also have concerns about if the food is still warm by the time it hits the dining room and the long explanations o what is on the plate takes place. I did think perhaps getting rid of the 'theatre' of the chef explaining each course could be replaced by a printed out menu card - with the explanations about what is local what is from the garden etc. I know this can be subject to change though. That puree.. was it pea? looked cold and set to me..
I was thinking the same. She could have a few. Possibly over the new countertop?
Marie outdoes herself every week. Thank You sharing your cooking with us Marie… totally inspiring and drool-worthy!
Decluttering means getting rid of things, not putting them away in a container.
And tell Phillip to lay off the shopping habit, too.
I love watching Marie's confidence grow with each meal. Keep kicking ass Marie
Hi Lalanders! I just want to share some thoughts and knowledge about storing books and some other porous items in a non-climate control atmosphere. I heard Stephanie say somewhere in there that it may be several years till certain rooms get put back together and the items be taken out of those containers. The moisture and season changes here in central to eastern Pennsylvania have really caused some problems in my non-climate control storage. Everything leather has molded and my books now have a horrible musty odor. The humidity comes in, even though all doors and the roof are sealed. This year I bought absorbent crystals to try to pull the moisture out of the air and prevent further damage. And in the summertime, those metal containers harbor extreme heat, which will damage items as well. Blessings to all you there. You are definitely a blessing in my life.
Absolutely be careful of what you store in containers! The heat and humidity and rain dampness will get into those and it can and will rot and ruin what you put in there. I had furniture and books etc. stored in 1 in Georgia USA and it all came to rot and ruin and mildew! 🥹
Stephanie...PLEASE read these comments! Everyone's concerns are valid. Unless the containers are insulated and dehumidified, the books will be ruined if stored for any length of time.
Oh for goodness' sake! Without proper insulation, humidity and temperature control those containers are useless for storage. Totally useless
Oh my gosh🙉😲 why?? Books cannot be in that kind of storage. That's absolutely a call for disaster 🙉🥹 Better would be to give the books away..
I also fear for books and panelling stored in containers, especially if it is a rainy summer. Please investigate solutions. I really enjoy Marie’s cooking and dinner with the guests. Thanks Stephanie 🙏❤️
Concerned that there could be condensation developing in those metal containers! My brother looked into using them ( Iowa may have hotter, more humid summers) and decided not to use them.
Yes we all head "whale" not "veal". I feel sad for the books that are going into an unheated metal container.Six monthe to two years makes a difference; the mold, black mold. People do not put paper in the basement for that reason. Our school lost over seventy percent of its books because of storage.
We had a shipping container we used while we were doing renovations and ended up having to throw things away, because of mold. Make sure you have a way to remove the humidity and keep air circulating.
I worry about mold in containers. Can you put a solar dehumidifier with a outside drain inside? The paneling inside a container... books inside a container...
The exteme heat that builds up inside causes wood to spilt and warp . Better to strore in Chateau in the environment it'll be installed in
Please protect the book boxes from moisture. They will mold if you do not and are set on bare floor with no humidity remediation. Don't stack the boxes too high or the integrity of the box will decrease and perhaps cause warping to the books inside.
Have Grant paint the pantry doors please!! They are always in the shots, and I think of it every time! I mean, the kitchen is looking sooo cute!!!
I'm very concerned about those medal containers. Things can get moldy if they aren't air tight and proper ventilation. The PTO ( parent/ teacher organization) had a container like those and we lost props for plays, fundraiser items and school spirit wear. It was a shame.
Having spent 20 years working in a museum, I have seen what can happen when wood, fabric, and paper are stored in spaces with no environmental conditioning. I agree with the other comment, you might as well give all those items away right now, so someone else can use them. After years in a storage container, they will be ruined. Changing temperatures, uncontrollable humidity, insects and rodents must be controlled. A storage container is just the worst.
I share the concerns about the damp, mold and critters. And the containers were placed directly on the grass, which will rot and animals will burrow underneath. I think the vegetation should have been removed first and the containers raised up on blocks to allow air circulation and reduce the problem with animals. Unless there is more to the plan....
I watch your channel faithfully and thoroughly enjoy! When I saw you plan to store books in the containers, I cringed. From experience when I had to combine my deceased parent’s belongings in a container, the humidity in the container destroyed the books. I highly suggest you take the boxes of books and put them in your attic. Just a thought.
Love to all! ❤
Greg
I totally agree with all the rest of the commentators about the containers. I would only store non porous items in those. Why is it taking 2 years to redo the library? Maybe more help is needed to speed it up?
Other projects to be finished first.
I was so concerned about the books that I forgot to mention that we once had a furniture store and decided to keep a new delivery of teak garden furniture temporarily in a shipping container. It was only during the summer and it got extremely hot and humit in there. As it was teak furniture for outside use anyway, it worked out, but I would never recomend storing stuff in a shipping container standig outside all year long. Everything will be damaged for good. The panelling for the rooms will not stand it either.
I remember this same task was done maybe 18 months ago ! Wow how the clutter has come back again in such a short space of time 😊
I can hear mummy saying "oh Stephanie you don't need all this". 😅
That’s probably why they stopped cadeau, as they have way too much stuff!
Affluenza
Shopping and taking more than you need
You should distribute all your books amongst the rooms - they will be destroyed in the containers. Same with anything that would suffer heat/cold/humidity/damp………..you get a lot of condensation on metal!
I usually don't comment but please please do not store books in the containers they be permanently musty.
No no no. Please don’t put the books in cardboard boxes and then in the metal containers. They will be ruined from temperature changes and humidity. And so will the paneling it will all warp.
Oh Stephanie! I am so worried about the books being outside in the containers especially because it is to be long term storage! Really worried! Thank you for the video.
Don't put the panelling in the container, it will warp! The books will be ruined and smell awful!
I love the quick dry humor of the Aussie... 🤣
He reminds me of Jerry!
@@dianegriffith3006 Yes he is a star. 🤗
Australians get things done. Good on you Grant!
I thought you stored the panelling indoors to aclimatise it, surely putting it in ametal container in the heat and humidity of the summer will ruin it?
I hope the wood and items stored in the metal containers do not suffer damage from humidity.
The containers are not for cloth, books or anything that can’t be outside
Leave books in the boxes in your attic…at least they are sorted.
Stephanie, why not utilize all the different guest bedrooms throughout the Château as a disjointed library. You can put at least one bookcase in every room. Your guest will be delighted at having things to read, and when you need a book, it will be readily available to you. In fact, you can even utilize a Barcode and handheld scanner to tell you where all your books are.
You can have walls of books where you are building the new walls in the bedrooms you are planning to remodel. I am sure the thrift Shop must have plenty of bookshelves available. Just make sure that you screw them to the walls so that children cannot climb them so they don’t top all over.
This means that when you finally do get to building your library, you will have room for all of your books and not have to get rid of any of them. Because frankly the winter salon does not have much wall space for bookshelves.
You can also put your more Important/Precious books and cabinets behind Glass locked doors. They will be decorative, but safe.
As far as putting that gorgeous paneling, or furniture, or books in containers, this is a disaster, waiting to happen. I stored items in an unheated basement up on raised platforms, and it was all ruined. You have those unfinished servant bedrooms. Why not use the that area for storage with some heaters ? Not only will those containers leak, but everything will be ruined by mold, and the paneling will warp. And truly, with all the space in your attic, you need containers to store, China? There must be a better way.
All this is being said with love.
The barcode & scanner sounds like a most helpful suggestion 👍🏻
THIS! 👆
I’m utterly confused -surely there is space in the Narnia attic for boxed books, unused furniture / panelling - why risk these things in containers - maybe stop buying stuff for now ? China storage yes but paper / panelling etc seems off
Clearly done for comments - like many things there will be no mention in future vlogs of how these were ever used and let’s be honest the chances of the work progressing in our lifetimes is very small
I fear these people are right the books will get damp and we know what happens then
I am concerned for the books too. Temperature and humidity changes equals moldy books.
There’s a product in Canada and US called Dri-Ez,,,,it crystallizes that you put in a container that has a basket. It was developed for boats in storage. You put the crystals in the basket which absorbs the moisture and drips into the container. We learnt about this when a friend stored her car for 2 years. When she came back it was covered in mold. We did it to our car when we stored it for 6 months. No smell, musty, Molly or damp. It does require emptying and refilling it on a regular basis but was well worth it. We also put it in a basement.
Please store the paneling somewhere where it can be stacked flat. It will warp if stored upright.
Stephanie darling, that’s a clip we still use in America at the dentist. I was a Dental Hygienist for 15 years, I looped hundreds of those around patients necks! That one you have may be more fancy, but yes, that is “ bib clip” from the dentist.
It's defnitely not.
@@kfordmartinez I apologize. That particular one is not, certainly as it’s a lovely antique! But we use exactly the same type of clips
all the time to hold the patients bib in exactly that position. Perhaps that’s where dentists got the idea.
A baby bib or sweater clip
😂
😀😁😅😝
I know first hand how awful those containers are for storage! I stored exotic wood and other things in one and lost everything. Those containers are not weather proof, they get extremely hot and water gets in everywhere. Please do not put the paneling in those containers or the books YOU WILL LOSE IT ALL!!!! Someone should have done investigating on containers according to what you need to store. Those are not right for your needs.
Marie has really found her calling as a Chef. Cannot help thinking of poor Grant waiting to pack books while Stephanie peruses them all first. God rewards the patient Grant.
When my parents bought their house years ago they found $20 gold pieces as weights in the drapes- you just never know lol ❤
It’s wonderful to have Grant back ❤ and to meet his lovely daughter. The guest dinner looked amazing this evening, well done Marie!! 👏👏👏
I don't ever comment on your vlogs, but I concur with what has been said; Storing these items in storage containers will ruin them all. Everything will be ruined. Please find other options.
Stephanie You are a book hoarder ( you can donate one for one when you get another) Don’t complain to Phillip about porcelain anymore, we all now know…😂
I have read many comments on the danger of putting books into an unheated shipping container and I can fully agree to that. I have a large (12.000 books) library myself and the room in which they are stored is heat and huminity controlled. I can not stand the thought of runining the books in this container. Rather I would take them before she has to throw everything away. - Can someone reach Stephanie in person to make sure she really knows about this problem?
This just proves the theory that no matter how much storage space you have, you will fill it and need more.
I agree the books in the loft were ok there. The new books maybe should have been put up there. Not in a container. They will get mouldy.
Cracks me up, filling boxes with books, but the shelves are still full
I’m afraid you’re going to lose all your prized books. In 2 years when you open all those boxes, you will have a musty, moldy mess - winter cold / summer heat are neither one good for books.
For years my mother-in-law was convinced someone had stolen her best watch. When she was moving house I was folding some curtains and I was curious about a bulky item in the hem. She suddenly got excited and sure enough, there was the watch 😂
I was reminded of my Grandmother. When we cleared her bookshelves we found 1500 euros in total, forgotten and stashed in various books!
I agree, we recently sold several containers we used for temporary storage while we added a wing on the house. The containers must be on footings to raise them off the ground, and you must run a dehumidifier 24/7. Even so, do not put your books, artwork, clothing/cloth, furniture or the paneling in a container. They are fine for items like glass or china, but you will need shelving as the boxes will become damp and collapse.
containers storage is the scariest thought.
I hope you read these comments and avoid the disaster that is leaving books and especially paneling which is irreplaceable in a container
