  • Coeliac disease . . . I think a lot of us have heard about it before, right? You may even have the disease yourself. So in this video I wanted to explain what causes coeliac disease and how it actually arises due to inappropriate immune responses to dietary gluten in the small intestine. It is considered an autoimmune condition and there will be more about autoimmunity in upcoming videos. Leave your questions down below as usual and SUBSCRIBE for more biology content with ByHollyG 😉

omg this is so amazing! I have been living with coeliac disease for 12 years now and I still learned quite a lot of new information in this video! Thank you for educating people!

Holly, I just wanted to say that you're such a talented teacher/science communicator. As opposed to most lectures I've had to sit through, your videos are easily understandable and to the point. And you don't use headache inducing slides! They're honestly a pleasure to watch :)

In the clinical immunology lab we will also test for Endomysial antibodies if a patient is positive for TTG as they are even more specific! We also test all patients for IgA deficiency as this can be commonly found in CD, and as the ttg autoantibodies are IgA mediated, we need alternative methods to detect, usually by doing a IgG endomysial assay via IIF. Clinicians will then decide whether the patient needs a biopsy or not :)

It would be super nice if there would be more content regarding autoimmunity and maybe other diseases as well it was a really informative lecture and also easy to watch. I truly enjoyed watching it and also learned a lot! thank you

Thank you so much for this! I was diagnosed with coeliac disease 4 years ago and it came as a massive shock even for someone studying science, I had never heard of it at the time! Even now after doing a science degree you explained it better than any videos or papers I’ve watched/read!❤️

Interesting & informative video Holly about Coeliac disease even though I don't have it myself I have friends who have it. This will help me understand why they can't eat food that contains gluten.

I can't stomach biology class at school, but I still love learning about biology. Your videos are so informative, and easy to follow along despite me having little biology knowledge (only having some knowledge in chemistry)! Thank you!

wow, thanks for bringing attention to this! for some people it’s a really long journey till the get the diagnosis. until that there are years of inexplicable pain after eating.

yes, exactly! i hope more people find out they have coeliac disease sooner, as it really does just take diet modification to get rid of the symptoms!

Hi Holly, great video. But I was just wondering when you say they need anti-ttg antibodies, but that’s to do with IgA isn’t it? And there is the possibility that an individual is genetically susceptible to an IgA deficiency, meaning they wouldn’t have abnormally high levels of anti-ttg-IgA. In those cases I think they can look at the levels of IgG instead can’t they?
