@@MartinFrydas I still do prefer his rams head and sovtek muff tones tbh. Still great sound. As I recall, only Time and Echoes contain those raw fuzz solos. The rest of it was the muff.

@@bluwng nah...the fuzz face has more treble, sounds harsher. The Big Muff has significantly more bottom, less mids and less treble...and for that, sounds smoother. The issue with the big muff is, it's difficult to get it to cut through the mix in a live setting. I have one on my board, but consistently have difficulty ever hearing it with another guitarist, bassist, and drummer.
It's a more complicated multistage circuit. The sound comes more from the design and filtering etc etc. The fuzz face is very simple but has a unique behaviour and relies on the transistors and their biasing. The fuzz face has more shrill and spitty treble. I recognized the muff already in the slide down the E-string. So fluid and still so broken, muff is in a league of its own.
Yeah. It was pretty easy to tell which one was the Muff in both clips. Great singing sustain, but no mids. Great job getting the fuzz to sound nice. I've been through what....5 different flavors of fuzz face? Can't get any of them to sound worth a damn. Yep. This man loves the Muff.
I'm hearing a pretty subtle difference between what sounds like the upper mid frequenct content; Muff seems to have more saturation (perceived as smoother), while the Fuzz Face seems a bit more sputtery and less smooth. Love both tones.
Not at all. Not sure how you heard that, but the Big Muff sounded way more like the original and that's because it's actually the same type of circuit he used. The Fuzz Face wasn't far off, but the distinction is clear.
That was a great comparison, I was surprised at how subtle the differences were. I want to get a pedal to complement my Tonebender, seems like the Fuzz Face would be the appropriate choice, a bit more trebly and sparkly than the Muff. The Muff seems to be closer to the creamy, meaty sound of the tonebender.

There are quite some differences. Muff was invented from the fuzz (think Fuzz->Muff->Distortion Pedals). Fuzz uses Transistors, Muffs create the Tone in Diodes. Muff is more compressed and has a big mid-scooped EQ... hope that helped a bit ;)
i got them both right but i definitley think they both work for different songs. Like i loved the muff on Time but the Fuzzface fit Money so much better.
Great video Martin. You inspired to get out the strat and do some more practice. Already trying to learn the solo to Money, now I have to add Time onto the list. For me, the Big Muff nails the rich tone, that Fuzz Face has a bit too much treble. Oh and it feels like your playing rocks up a level when you use the BM as well. Thanks for the settings too !
Very welcome and thanks a lot! Yes, the muff is THE Gilmour sound for sure - but if I only had one pedal it would be the fuzz, cause I can cover so much more ground with it ;) 🤘
