    To be clear, the station is new and clean. But given it’s age, the “I’m a giant barcode” design still rubs me the wrong way! What’s your personal pick?

    I don't know man, this looks pretty decent, sure it's nothing special and the outside is a little bland, but compared to some of the u-bahn stations in the Ruhr-area or metro stations in Belgium this looks okay. (those are the only ones I have visited that I could compare with, there are probably plenty more outside of Europe, for example Kolkatta has some dreadful looking stations)

    There are many stations in Toronto that are uglier than Finch West. Maybe the reason the TTC doesn't build much above ground/elevated metro is that they don't know how to build a station that's not ugly

      The quip about NYC is hardly surprising. There's the deferred maintenance, water damage, and significant differences in design language by historic system and era. In addition, most of the elevated tracks are on viaducts that are built almost exclusively from steel and painted in green (assuming that they're not showing their age and shaking things loose).

      I don't find the station beautiful either anyway. The barcode pattern in the surface buildings is far too aggressive and almost makes me feel physically uncomfortable. While I find it hard to believe this is the ugliest station in Toronto (it's really not that bad apart from the exterior), it does appear to suffer from a little bit of a lipstick on a pig syndrome. It's like the architect designed it completely functionally and then an arty person came along and said "no, this is no good, let's colour it in" and then they proceeded to add the red tiles and coloured windows and stripes to mask the blandness of it and "tart it up a bit". It's not very well thought out design. It's not beautiful. That being said, if it didn't have the colours, it might be a contender for the ugliest station.

    • @petitkruger2175
      @petitkruger2175 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@petitkruger2175 I totally agree. If the form of the design can carry it off. The JLE stations can. This one? Not so much. Although saying that, I do actually like the "ugly" bare concrete walls that were supposed to be hidden behind platform screen doors. It reminds me of the JLE a lot.

    "Is this the ugliest metro station in the world?"
    Dude, you need to visit Philly.
    Jokes aside, the high ceiling and strong lighting make it look like this station will age better than a lot of subways in the US. If you want an example of an uglier recently remodeled station, look at 5th St/Independence Mall in Philly.

  • @Peorhum
    @Peorhum 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It seems common in your video that you expect to much in the designers of stations. Quite often stations are forced to fit the surroundings, not the other way around. More so with stations that connect lines. Having to walk distances, take tunnels, use stairs, is quite often the only practical way of connecting lines, more so with limited budgets. Doesn't look to bad of a station.
    I remember in my 20s having to take the subway from Islington station to Spadina station, use the tunnel to change lines(they had the moving walkway back then), then go to Wilson station which was furthest north station at the time, then take the Finch bus from Wilson station to west of the 400 to get where I needed to go...I would have loved this new Finch line back then, a nice step forward for transit users.

    Ever been in The Netherlands at Rotterdam Beurs? Or Rotterdam Blaak? At station Beurs you need to go up and down from various entrances, of which some are hard to find, or, when you want to exit: just try one. It is a crossing station, that is that two tracks (one with 3 lines and one with 2 lines) cross on 2 levels. As you are not familiar there, you will get lost and and up at the wrong side of the city (or even anothet city).
    At Blaak it is easier: metro crossing above railway... Much better. The design of the station is something special!

    Why are trains different in Line1 and line2 ? Line 1 is so much better, cleaner and trains are newer than line2.
    Not sure if you’ve already made a video of this?

      It is because of the train control system. The Bloor-Danforth line will be updated... eventually...with the work moving at "warp speed bureaucracy."

    May I recommend an optometrist, you clearly need a change of eye wear..
    Don’t get me wrong Toronto’s mass transit planning is as useless as the the “Maple Laffs”. However they are struggling to improve. That’s not a bad looking station, Give TO a break.

    I really don't like station buildings. Either put stations underground with staircases, or in a suburban area like this, assuming money is something you care about, put them above ground like the SkyTrain.

      Same here, to some extent. Although buildings are better for accessibility, I am a tad bit salty that the Bayview/Eglinton McDonald's was demolished for their Line 5 station building.
      The silver lining is that the new station building may (emphasis may) feature a coffee shop/fast food place; maybe the McDonald's will return.

    Honestly, I don't think many stations could beat St. Patrick as the ugliest station. Finch West is beautiful in comparison imo

      Totally agree. St. Patrick's "Bathroom" vibe due to its vomit-coloured tiles qualifies it as the ugliest station.

    I think barcode design looks dated even though it only a 4 year old station

    Clickbait titles make me sad :( (I know its a question and not a statement but still) ..... is there any plan for in station amenities like a cafe/deli etc...seems rather devoid of such and above ground didn't really seem to have that either?

      Ey, I think there’s a case to be made 😂 and no, sadly no such provisions.

    Not sure how this can be seen as uglier than St. Laurent station on the Montreal Metro...

      Subway and GO stations are equipped with public telephones because: 1. Not everyone has a cell telephone. 2. To call emergency services.

    To be fair, I don't mind your hot take on the "ugly" Toronto station. It's in the title.
    It just makes us yanks envious.
    Must be how you Canadians feel when NJB puts a video about "worst dutch city for biking/transit"

    The other station on Keele seems uglier than Finch West.
