(16:20) We had some alyssum in a flower box that was planted last summer and stayed in bloom throughout the winter, surviving a full week of temperatures that hovered around 25 degrees. It was almost a year before they started dying off. The seeds are now coming up around the old box.

When we rescued our cat Oliver, he was 6 months old. We had just adopted our lab-mix, Tucker, a few months earlier. Tucker was 3.5 years old at the time. We were living in a small apartment. We spent two days with Tucker on his leash, not letting him get super close to the kitten, and then a day with his leash in but not held. Oliver had access to a couple of surfaces where Tucker couldn’t reach him, like the dining table. Tucker backed off every time Oliver hissed at him, and he was actually scared of Oliver getting close to him for several months. But by the time Oliver turned one, they were playing together. We’ve watched Oliver full-out tackle Tucker and take him to the ground. But it was a learning curve for us as pet parents.....we learned that dogs and cats play chase and will take turns catching each other and that dogs will snort to communicate that they are playing and not serious. We still monitor them when they rough house....sometimes Tucker will try to pin Oliver by laying on him and we’ll call him off. Any time one of them let’s out a cry, either a claw in the face or a stepped on tail, we’ll have them take a break. We have 3 cats now, but Oliver and Tucker are still best friends.(:

Southern Exposure Seed Exchange is one of my absolute favorite seed companies. They really focus on Southeastern varieties and old heirlooms. I learned about them from working at living history museums, but I love many of their varieties. Ashley slicing cucumbers, tan cheese pumpkins, and “large red” tomatoes are my favorites from them. The tan cheese pumpkins have performed well for me in Alabama and the fruits can last up to a year in storage and taste amazing.

I ran across Southern Exposure this year and they always seem to have seed in stock. I have had wonderful success with propagation of the seeds I have purchased from them. Also want to mention they ship quickly and I received my order within 3 days which is wonderful since I have no patience to wait to get my seeds and start planting. Many of the seeds I have purchased this year have a date of 2021 sell date...so happy to get them a season before.

Many, many years ago a chef at EPCOT shared how they fixed the rutabaga that they served in Norway: boiled rutabagas and carrots. Mash both with salt, butter and heavy cream. Simple, and this day my oldest, who is now a grown man, will request that I make them. (If the dish is bitter -it happens- add a small amount of sugar)

Hey Jess, those tannins are also good mixed with some water as a pre soak for tomato and pepper seeds.
Make a cup of black tea let it steep. Drink it or pour it out and then reuse the same bag for a second cup. The second batch of tea is when the tannins are released let this cool to room temperature and mix with water and use this to pre soak your seeds. This really speeds up germination.

I thought that those seed packets looked familiar, so I checked. I had bought some holy basil seeds from the health food store in the spring and they were botanical interests! Now I'm going to check out their website, can never have too many seeds, lol

May I suggest a cabbage leaf between your pickles/peppers and the weights to ensure everything stays submerged? I do this fermenting my kraut to keep all the shreds submerged. I ❤️ your videos. Thank you!

When my last Botanical Interests order arrived a few wks back, our son brought in from mailbox and yelled out to our daughter as he was bringing it in the house, "Hey Quinn!, Go wrap this for mom in Christmas paper so she can open it!!" Yes, it is always Christmas when a new seedbox arrives!!!

I didn't know about Botantical Interests until I watched this video. After watching, I immediately went to their website and ordered seeds. I'm excited, ordered 52 packs of various seeds to fill in my seed stash, and to plant for fall/winter Thanks for sharing! Baker Creek is one if my favorite places to find seeds.

I was watching your okra video from last year when this popped up, was so so so excited, but instead waited for my canner to come to pressure and snuck outside to plant okra, radishes, green beans, carrots, cosmos, marigolds, lettuce, spinach, broccoli, and cilantro in 5 minute increments because the baby is napping and i am still slightly afraid of not looking at the pressure gauge every 5 minutes 😆😆
oh my gosh the milkshakes brought him to the yard 😅😆

You can substitute muscadine leaves for the grape leaves for the tannic acid. You should have those growing somewhere in your area.

Dr. Ennis??...where's Ross Poldark when you need him. Probably in London arguing with George Warleggin. 🙄
Question...is Miah actually human? I've seen people with work ethic, but he may have them all beat!! Thank you, Miah, for sharing your time with the Hollars. And thank you Jess for sharing Miah.❤

@@jacquelynhyson2164 not sure how many more bucks they will want (like the last baby Fred, they decided he was too cute to get rid of!😂), but they have Ross Poldark & Dr. Enys, I think they need a few more Poldark characters! Or at least name a couple of the girls some after the female leads!
However, when Miah got into Downton Abbey I was wholeheartedly waiting for a Daniel & Lady Mary (& all the others!!!) Perhaps names for the ducks & geese!😁

There you go again ... spending my money Jess. In perusing the Ohio Stoneware site, I called and actually reached the owner. He's very back-logged on getting those crocks produced because he can't find workers!! Can you imagine in this day not finding people wanting work? He has a tremendous backlog, but I really encourage people to give him their business, even if it takes a while to receive the items. For now, I went the next best route - individual Masontops glass weights & "pipes" for individual jar fermenting. The 3-gallon crock kit totally remains on my wish list, maybe Santa can do something about that, but for now excited to try this!! You made it look so simple. Hugs to you, be blessed.

Jess, I planted beet seeds from the Brim seed company a while back and I have been almost drooling thinking about fresh buttered beets, one of my weaknesses. So, yesterday after a bit of an illness I was in my garden weeding and discovered that what grew from that seed packet was Red Swiss Chard and now I do not know whether to laugh or cry.
We have an extremely short growing season here in Clayton, Idaho around 45 to 55 days in a god year and I garden in a large polycarbonate greenhouse so space is at a premium... Smile

Anxiously awaiting my botanical interests order. I totally forgot about them until you mentioned them the other day. So glad I looked because they had some stuff I wasn’t able to find on other seed websites. I ordered the sugar magnolia snap peas in hopes to grow on my arched trellis. The idea of purple blooms and pods in our “tunnel” sounds lovely. Can’t wait!

You can use folded horseradish leaves for extra crunch and black currant or cherry tree leaves for amazing aroma. Also if you have bloomed overgrown dill plants, just fold and put it the jar...I smash my garlic and sometimes dont even peel, they will give their enzymes faster.

Just had to let you know, you don’t need cabbage to make kimchi. You can make many different veggies with the Kim chi recipe. As a child we used to go to a supermarket that I called Kim Chi Heaven. It was my favorite place. You can use radishes, broccoli, cucumbers, Choi sum... there is a whole wide world of Kim chi you can pull out of that beautiful crock. Good luck!
