I think this playground theory thing is part of the reason why Skyrim is so good. You're able to do basically whatever you want in the world, you can rob any shop, kill (almost) any NPC, it's that emergent gameplay that's the reason people still play it almost 15 years later
Killing Lydia was either the funniest shit ever or an utter tragedy depending on the playthrough. Shame they started handing out essential NPC status to anyone and everyone in their next games. Preston Garvey should be 6 feet under.
Legit, almost can't say anything else. You addressed everything. I still wish they'd just add all the online content to singleplayer, all the guns, cars and accessories. I also wouldn't mind heisting with the main three and be able to switch between each character during the heist but it's not my main concern. I just want all my toys in my sandbox, I can't care if I don't have any guidelines.
12:42 I was literally thinking "damn that reminds me a lot of MGSV" a second ago and got the dopamine boost when realising you're following the same brainwave as someone else.
What I really loved about Red Dead Redemption 2 was the fact that it really incentivized exploration through participation within the open world. You could save some guy from wolves, help someone on a hunt, prevent a robbery, bring someone to their destination after the death of their horse or something along the line, and as a reward you could get some info on a stash or hidden weapons. Or, you could just find these spots through sheer accident/exploration on your own. It's basically what you describe. So there is definitely a big chance that we'll see more of it in GTA6.
i unironically love these discussion videos while still have having the funny lil Cor guy reacting, he is seriously the cherry on top i look forward to more in the future
DRIVER Parallel Lines imo has a fantastic police system. Obviously they’re known for the cone sight system. But it also had separate heat levels for your car and your person. They might not recognize your face so if you switch cars, you’re clear. Also, if I’m not mistaken, if they see you get out of the hot car, iirc your heat matches the car you got out of if lower.
Mafia 2 also had a pretty decent system, you could get rid of your wanted level by changing your clothes, your car, hell even just the license plate on your car if you were by an auto shop. You'd also pick up a 1 star wanted level for speeding but you could just outrun the cops for that and lose your wanted level.
Yep, DRIVER and Mafia 2 both had really good systems. The biggest trouble with both of those games, unfortunately, was the lack of activity outside of the storyline. It was 'drive around', 'upgrade cars' and 'fight cops' but there wasn't much else to it.
7:37 this is what I like about watchdogs wanted system if you kill someone in a back alley and no npcs are nearby to see you do it then you get away with it because they actually pull out their phone and call the police.
Always love seeing a creator I already appreciated going down the video essay pipeline. How else am I to eat my lunch without a video essay to appease my eyes and ears?! Anyways, nice to see another vid from ya, Corax. :3
Great video! Loved the lil animation bits, youre one of the kings of expression on this platform. I agree with everything you said, my fondest memories of playing san andreas was never doing the missions but playing with friends passing the controller around to see who could get into the most trouble. I'm really hoping the devs at rockstar want to make more of a game than a movie.
Great video and this is the kind of stuff that I used to think about a lot when I played GTA regularly. I can almost imagine a freeform GTA game that lets you rob places freely with lots of different systems interacting to make it a varied experience. And I really want to see the nemesis system! I can't believe it's been patented, because a nemesis system in GTA could be so interesting for both law enforcement and rival criminals.
Emergent gameplay mentioned, run command on referencing immersive sims for their emergent gameplay scenarios. Joking aside, dicking around in GTA games has always been a really fun experience for me. My usual way of playing through a GTA game is to go through some main missions first, then cause chaos when I get a small number of starting equipment. Maybe sprinkle some side missions in there, or some side activities, like playing pool or bowling, then back to the main missions afterwards. Repeat in differing levels of commitment. I feel a sense of progression as I acquire more of the arsenal to mess around with, a wider amount of options to create more sandbox scenarios. Though evidently, the options are pretty much one note, isn't it? Glances at the 20 different weapons in my back pocket. Having more interactivity with the world, as in things reacting in sort of a branching path according to actions you partook in, would definitely enhance these "player crafted scenarios" rather than it just resulting in a shootout in an unscrupulous manner. Having certain responses tied to certain areas and/or certain types of day would definitely make the scenarios feel more personal. Maybe you could encounter a street racer in the dead of night? Honking a bunch could cause them to race you, and maybe sometimes, just sometimes, a cop chase could start as you were speeding down the streets, with you spliting up in order to lose the heat. Or maybe even just speeding in front of a police station would make them tail you. Could get annoying, though. I definitely did not play any of the GTA games as a youth back in the day and definitely did not imagine myself as a wanted troublemaker in the bad part of town as I defended myself from hordes of people using that one cheat that makes everyone turn on you in GTA Vice City. Or maybe I was driving a van, trying to get my gang to escape the police while driving through the backalleys. Just saying if I had hypothetically experienced those things, it would've been a very memorable experiences for me. Just hypotheticals though. I did not have access to the games due to my older brother’s influence. Wink. At the end of the day, player created scenarios are definitely fun to realize, and the outcome comes entirely on the person orchestrating the event themselves. Maybe, I'm just hoping, that there are some semblance of these sandbox options in the main campaign. I know that GTA V have you choose on how you want to conduct a heist, but maybe integrating more player choice during a mission would be rad. Would help the replayibilites of said missons. I'm not sure how much of the scope would balloon from this, and you know what they say about scope, it creeps up on ya. I know I'm ranting a bit here, but I do have a sense of attachment to this series. Countless hours just dawdling around, just doing stupid stuff just to see what stupid stuff I could get away with. Personally, I only have managed to finish the main campaign of SA and VC, gotten close to finishing IV but the laptop running the game cooked itself. I think I got somewhere through half of V’s, am planning to replay and finish IV’s story sometime soon. Never got to doing every side content though, simply because they're overwhelming, heh. Anyway, I’m looking forward to see what other stupid stuff I can do in the next entry. Because doing stupid stuff is just fun. Not gonna deny, it does get old though, but I'll get a fair amount of time enjoyment out of it. And that's fine by me.
Corax is making such cool non-animation videos lately, the past year has been a great run. I enjoy the animations but I honestly enjoy the new direction even better! I hope I can someday make a game that checks a lot of these open-world dynamic-systems boxes. All the best
This video is really well made as in how much it speaks to your level of knowledge surrounding GTAV (and RDR2), there's apt inspiration from others who spoke on the game (namely, jakey) without diving down the slippery slope of repetition and baseline introduction types of videoessay. You (being an artist seems like it helps!) properly utilize the medium of videomaking to make really fitting usage of both footage and script, effortlessly weaving it through the essay without fully commiting to the video-ified essay either by keeping in mind the artistic intention to make it humorous with skits n similar. You can't see much of this nowadays, be it original content regarding GTA given it's VAST playerbase or creative vid-essay, given it's a sea of >30 min to several hour long slop. Well done!
I played it as a kid so I don't know if it's aged well but I remember the Godfather video game doing a similar thing to what you're describing with the robberies. Though I might be misremembering that because most of your ne'er-do-well activity in that game is intimidating store owners to get a more lucrative protection racket over them. I'm pretty sure it had safes you could blow up in the back though so close enough.
Only time I ever played that game was on a computer in a dingy hotel internet cafe while we were on vacation lol, so I can't say either, but thanks for the insight!
The Godfather game is a really underrated GTA clone. I remember thinking it was so cool that you could rob a bank and blow up the safe to get the money.
This is really interesting! What you're essentially proposing would be to push GTA further into immersive sim territory. Since immersive sims are AMAZING, I fully support this assessment
12:39 this is honestly my favorite part about some of the just cause games (2, 3) as you can just kinda waltz in and until anyone sees you you go completely unnoticed
I wish there was more to it than this. But no, R* decided that the singleplayer might as well not exist and the online mode needs to be nothing but Micotransactions incentivation for the people who are addicted buying virtual cars.
Love how your video reviews give me the nostalgic feeling of 2000-2015 eviews and how you manage the soundtrack to complement the tone of what you're currently saying!
Holding up random gas stations while free roaming was so impressive to me at the time. It felt like the world was something living that I was a part of, rather than just a map that missions would take place on.
I loves the little animations throughout the video and it really helped it feel more unique and easier to follow, They were spaced out really well. Though I do feel like the topic about the point of the video was a little weak.
this new upload is the secret ingredient to me having a very good day! i love the addition of all your little animations. the editing timing is so top notch.
I remember when I was a little kid, my favorite playground was this old wooden one that looked like a space ship. A lot of kids like the newer, plastic stuff, but my friends and I would take inspiration from shows we'd seen and try to incorporate them into dynamic stories. Mostly, Star Trek, MASH 4077, and Cyberchase.
For me the thing that makes GTA V special is its amazing and humorous interpretation of our modern times. It perfectly captures the comedy of our reality.
You have relatively few videos out, but you are easily in my top 10 creators. Your videos are both great for sitting and watching and having in the background while I play turok or whatever. Also love your art style. How do I give you money lol
My brother has played a lot of GTA 5 online in a roleplay setting---and even as an outsider/listener to his experiences, sometimes it did sound fun. It had me imagining what I would do in huge realism sandbox world (besides crime). Personally, I'd want to be a sort of park ranger/explorer/vigilante.
Ooooo I hope these video essays have been getting the viewer attention they deserve. Leaving a comment longer than 7 words for interaction, these are great videos even if I have nothing interesting to contribute lol
Yay! A corax video! Man it feels like it's been so long 😭. Tho once again, it's always awesome to see you do new things and express your genuine opinions! So thank u
Well articulated daydreaming sessions with good editing, creative flare, and a sense of humor presented by a down-to-earth yet extremely talented artist is probably the best genre of youtube video imo
Oh man, I agree with this so hard it could cut glass! I always thought it was unfortunate that GTA and games of its ilk can end up feeling like a big (though often beautiful) container for linear missions instead of a sandbox. The children yearn for emergent gameplay! Fabulous video- I love the video game essay-ra of Corax!
Hell yeah, GTA has these worlds that are so fun to just inhabit. Walking around, toying with systems, looking at landscapes... I love that! Also, wtf is this 8:15 stock footage?
i wanted to mention how your voice is great for this scripted-type of content. It's clear that you're passionate about what you talk about, and it doesnt sound forced or overbearing like quite a few other video essay people. i like your voice a lot!
My favorite thing to do in gta 5 is to get all 3 characters dressed up in the stealth outfit, get a van so there is one person in the back shooting, and then go rob a bunch of places whilst trying to escape a bunch of cops.
I don't know what makes gta special but to me its the freedom factor mixed with it's vast world, in older games you're given an intro cutscene and maybe a few tips on the basics and from there it's up to you weather you wanna go through the story or go out and explore.
I went onto TH-cam going 'ive got like 20 minutes before I clock into work I hope I find something quick' and spotted this one that I hadn't seen yet Thank you always Corax for your fun reviews and opinions they always come at a great time and bring a smile to my face
The best game I've seen that offers true sandbox freedom in this regard while still having structure to direct it is Streets of Rogue, with it's true open world sequel with vehicles out now. It has fun with the emergent systems that Rockstar always punishes players for going against, so you can truly complete (or sabotage) any mission in any way you like. And isn't that what true freedom's all about anyway, rather than a cinematic movie where the protagonist suddenly breaks characters and beats up passerby for amusement? It embraces the absurdity of video games while GTA tends to fight it tooth and nail despite the beautifully realized facades.
I loved recreating the heist mission in gtaiv in freeplay either online with friends or just between missions I'd start making havoc in a crowded place until I got three stars and then try to lose my heat by sneaking into backstreets and slowly crawl away from the police Sometimes I succeeded, sometimes it got thwarted by a random police checking the alley I was in or a chopper spotting me, which could result in long car chases or me holing up in a store, with a firefight until I was out of bullets Those were some of the best moments of the game and I think there is a reason all you do in gtaV is heist missions, though I never had any time to play that game
AGREED! lol try robing a helicopter from the base! Only way I’ve been able to is to have the phone out and quick save my way into the tunnel under the base!
You're right, I couldn't play Gta SA as a 5 year old with my 10 year old brother, while I knew after dying countless times that the most useful thing I could do was follow him (don't worry he didn't say). I had a blast though. I also think he didn't mind because I was bad enough where I couldn't even defend myself, but I was good enough where he could save me and I could get in a car with him.
I think what made GTA special was the so called "wood to chop" that "rockstar" likes to smoke in it's "crackpipe". Corporations are "people" who need "therapy"
Even cheat codes can make for an immersive experience. The pedestrian riot cheat code in San Andreas. I would turn that on and then go to los venturas and land a helicopter on the top of the casino and fight my way down to the bottom and then to the airport before I escaped and would make up various scenarios for why I would be doing so
9:28 Instead of NPC Behaviors, it’s location behaviors. Shopping districts, neighborhoods, and municipal districts have different traffic depending on weather and time. •Government buildings are nearly abandoned by 7pm. •fast foods are packed around noon. •churches are nearly always empty aside from Hobo Joe. •Strip Clubs are more lively on Tuesdays because the buffet is having a special on Mexican cuisine.
I swear stealing a jet from Zancudo used to take a bit of skill, in that I am almost 100% sure it didn't just fore random homing missiles at you, but instead spawned jets in flight to chase you until you were far enough away. I know I had to learn to evade and dogfight AI jets while playing Online. In the early years pre-Harrier and personal Stinger launchers, stealing a jet used to be the least counterable way to take out people trolling with Rhinos in the city.
The only thing I did as a kid whenever someone made the mistake of giving me a remote to GTA V was stealing the first vehicle I saw then aiming to the nearest farm and rolling over a maximum of cows. It gaves me the best laughs as a kid. Don’t know what it precisely tells about me tho XD

i wanted to mention how your voice is great for this scripted-type of content. It's clear that you're passionate about what you talk about, and it doesnt sound forced or overbearing like quite a few other video essay people. i like your voice a lot!
Always a good day when Corax uploads
My favorite thing to do in gta 5 is to get all 3 characters dressed up in the stealth outfit, get a van so there is one person in the back shooting, and then go rob a bunch of places whilst trying to escape a bunch of cops.
Ahhh the tism pleased with this one. Thank you. I love you
Something I'd really love for GTA 6 would be VR support
I don't know what makes gta special but to me its the freedom factor mixed with it's vast world, in older games you're given an intro cutscene and maybe a few tips on the basics and from there it's up to you weather you wanna go through the story or go out and explore.
I went onto TH-cam going 'ive got like 20 minutes before I clock into work I hope I find something quick' and spotted this one that I hadn't seen yet
Thank you always Corax for your fun reviews and opinions they always come at a great time and bring a smile to my face
This video is a beautiful love letter to GTA for sure 💖
Great video, one thing tho qt 8:13 in the vid thats not cops spawning, but alr spawned guards being alerted
I loved recreating the heist mission in gtaiv in freeplay either online with friends or just between missions
I'd start making havoc in a crowded place until I got three stars and then try to lose my heat by sneaking into backstreets and slowly crawl away from the police
Sometimes I succeeded, sometimes it got thwarted by a random police checking the alley I was in or a chopper spotting me, which could result in long car chases or me holing up in a store, with a firefight until I was out of bullets
Those were some of the best moments of the game and I think there is a reason all you do in gtaV is heist missions, though I never had any time to play that game
corax #1 video essay youtuber
AGREED! lol try robing a helicopter from the base! Only way I’ve been able to is to have the phone out and quick save my way into the tunnel under the base!
GTYAPPING

Peak series
A video game essay from the bouncy Jerma animation guy is something I didn't have any idea I'd be seeing
I wish i grew up with gta.. luv ya corax
Why did I not see this video 'til after watching your Grunn vid??? Either I got small eyes or my subscription page has done me a great disservice.
14:36 Motifa!
Corax has everything to make peak white man video essays
I love it
I think what made GTA special was the so called "wood to chop" that "rockstar" likes to smoke in it's "crackpipe".

Instead of NPC Behaviors, it’s location behaviors.
Look out baby, here comes MOTIFA.
gta 5 will always remain my favorite. I live near LA and this game just felt great to play because it nailed everything about it.
Babe wake up, new Corax video essay just dropped!
I'm willing to bet you're unintentionally foreshadowing the gameplay elements of GTA 6
NEW CORAX THANK YOU GOD
Okay you're way underrated man
"What makes GTA special?"
There's cougar in mission.
Great video; thank you corax
14:36 MOTIFA MENTIONED 💥💥‼️💥⚡️💥⚡️‼️💥⚡️💥⚡️⚡️💥
Get video to eat dinner too, perfectly timed, ty Corax
The only thing I did as a kid whenever someone made the mistake of giving me a remote to GTA V was stealing the first vehicle I saw then aiming to the nearest farm and rolling over a maximum of cows. It gaves me the best laughs as a kid.
Don’t know what it precisely tells about me tho XD
