      Kirstie Saunders In Scotland we intorduced the PVG scheme because of the Soham murders as part of the case recommendations so basically anyone wanting to work with children or vulnerable adults need to undergo police checks and really intense background checks before being given employment in one of these sectors... not sure if England do the same sort of thing though.... x

      We have it here in Australia too, you have to get a background police check done and a “working with children” card for childcare, teaching, jobs in schools or any job where you’re around children, my boyfriend even needs one as he’s a builder and they occasionally work in schools. Such an important thing, so sad that it wasn’t in place before this happened to the girls :(

      the background checks in the UK started as a result of these murders. I grew up near where it happened and we studied local schools in history and one of the reasons for the increased safeguarding laws in schools now was because of these murders and the fact he managed to get a job in a school despite previous allegations because of the lack of checks/resources available then

    Abduction cases always hit home to me because my great grandma and her best friend were almost kidnapped when they were younger. As little children they were playing out in the yard which was close to the road. There was a van that drove past and a man got out with a dog and asked if they wanted to pet it. Of course this was a long time ago and they lived in a small town where everybody knew and trusted eachother. So they said yes and he then explained that his dog had puppies and if they wanted he would take them to go see them. My great grandmother and her friend trusted him and got in the car. After they were driving a bit they began getting a little suspicious of what was going on and started asking to use the bathroom. They nagged the man until he finally pulled into a gas station and let them go into the bathroom but he was standing outside the door. Luckily there was a window in the bathroom and they got out and ran to the nearest house where they got help and had someone take them home. Abductions are no joke and i wouldnt be alive if they had not realized what was going on. Thank you Eleanor for the wonderful video as always you did an amazing job

Almost 20 years later and having finally, after 17 long years of domestic abuse, I divorced my abuser. I've started volunteering in a women's refuge and I see Maxine Carr differently now. I've had training as to how domestic abuse affects victims. It's not as cut and dry as I used to think. For lying and providing an alibi for Huntley she did her time. Oh yeah right "I didn't know about the murders" she can say that all she wants but the entire reason the couple was looked into was because she used the past tense when talking about the girls in that interview. If she didn't know they were dead why did she use that language? She might not have helped him kill them, but she 100% helped cover it up and her lying saying she didn't know anything is ridiculous.

      Wasn’t she their teacher/teacher’s assistant in the previous year or something?
      I’ve seen teachers in life talking about former students in the past tense, since after the year’s over, they don’t usually maintain much contact, so they say something like “she was an amazing student, and was a really sweet girl” instead of using “is”.

    • @JLynnEchelon
      @JLynnEchelon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +96

      I agree with both points here. It isn't particularly unusual to talk about your former students in the past tense in certain ways, "she was a great student". Maybe this year she's not, I don't know. The thing I did think was weird was when she said she would treasure the paper from them. Like she knew they weren't going to find the girls alive.

No one in the pub I worked at would ever talk about it, even after many pints no one wanted to discuss it. House prices in Soham are still lower than everywhere else in the surrounding area decades later. I managed the bar for a Wells family wake too. They were really sweet and the dad gave me a very generous tip. Holly's big brother was very shy and subdued and told me he still can't stand funerals. jdjmjdsmjdmjidjidsids my mum said he gave most women the creeps but somehow he could manipulate other girls by acting charismatic and friendly, my mum didn’t like him at all though as he was very creepy. My dad was best friends with his brother Wayne and when he went round to their house Wayne would tell my dad not to say anything around Ian because he would start an argument over everything and would take things the wrong way. When they were young (I’m not sure what the exact age is) Ian was beat up by someone in his year and his head was bashed on the ground pretty hard, my dad said this could be something to do with how he acted and for what he did to Jessica and holly. His upbringing was normal, he had very kind parents and a lovely family and his brother is a great person showing that it isn’t something caused by home life otherwise his brother would have turned out the same or at the least he would be a bad person right? so there’s not many other reasons other than it just being the way he was born. I’ve seen before in other murderers that accidents like this can cause their brain to act differently so this could be the reason he is the way he is. He had sexually abused many women in the Grimsby area before he moved and my parents say he should have been locked up for that but it was completely ignored by the police. He was extremely manipulative and a very angry man although around women he would act like a nice guy to gain their trust. Sorry for the long comment but I wanted to address everything I can remember from this conversation I had with my parents, I hope this helped 💕

      jdjmjdsmjdmjidjidsids I haven’t until now, it’s absolutely ridiculous. Ian Huntley is a horrible person and my parents got to see that first hand. When Jessica and holly were murdered he tried to be in the limelight as much as possible, organising events to try and find the girls and talking to reporters at every given chance because he got some kind of boost, thinking he couldn’t be caught and he thought he was a genius for being right under the polices nose without them realising it. He got so much enjoyment from murdering those two girls and it’s absolutely disgusting, anyone who thinks otherwise is seriously just as dumb as Ian was to think he could get away with this 🤦🏼‍♀️

    • @chloe-zh2ux
      @chloe-zh2ux 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      jdjmjdsmjdmjidjidsids I also just remembered something my dad said awhile ago about Ian. He said Ian was small and wasn’t strong enough to stand up to any man which is why he attacked women instead. He said people on tv making documentaries about Ian act like he’s some kind of mastermind but in reality he was quite stupid and just reacts on impulse. When he lived in Grimsby he’d start an argument with a guy (being the angry person he was) but would never be able to stand up for himself. He was weak and stupid. It’s so sad that he targeted these 2 poor girls so he could feel some sort of control. I believe that’s why he did it because of that information my dad told me. He targeted mainly younger women and thought he was smart for attacking them (sexually abusing, physically abusing and mentally abusing them) and getting away with it every time so when he committed these murders he thought he could get away with this. he had grown such a big ego because the police never bothered to charge him for what he did and these girls and their poor family had to suffer for it. it’s truly disgusting and I can’t believe a person like him exists and so close to where I live too

When I heard her interview I immediately knew she knew something we didn’t when she referred to them in past tense. That’s a big tell! Thanks Eleanor for sharing all these cases with us in your caring, respectful manner.

    This case happened long before I became a parent, but even after I had kids it's stuck with me. As a parent, you want to think that if there's *anyone* safe to be around your children, it's their teachers...and this case proved that, sometimes, that trust can be *catastrophically* misplaced.

      Heaven M I think they meant that they hadn't taken a lot of money, like 100 pounds to run away with out of a piggy bank. When I went to get sweets when I was little, sometimes I had only like 20 cents with me which nobody investigating would notice.

    • @heavenm268
      @heavenm268 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Nicole Shaddix True. I’ve just noticed in other cases they’ll mention that the kid(s) brought a small amount of money with them (like $5, $10) but that was all they had. Just caught my attention. But that’s true- probably wouldn’t mention it if it was a minuscule amount.

    They think talking in the past tense is strange. It can be, I believe that. But like, I talk in the past tense all the time. If I'm talking about a person I haven't recently seen and spoken to or hung out with, I'm gonna talk about them in past tense. Let's just hope I never get interviewed for a missing person's case, because I will be talking in past tense. It's not a thing I really think about.

    Wow! This took me back, I was assigned to RAF Mildenhall at the time this horrible crime happened. I remember being terribly worried about those girls, and commenting to one of my co workers, “ those girls have been missing too long, nothing good will come from this”. You are so right when you say everyone was so emotionally involved, I have never forgotten the names Holly and Jessica, it’s always in my brain. The last thing you’d ever expect in that area was such a violent, crime...well, back then , I’m not sure how it is now, I do miss the Fens very much. I enjoy your videos a lot. This one struck I guess in my heart hearing those girls names again.

    I'm from Scunthorpe and I'm two years younger than Holly & Jessica (I'm 28 this year), when Ian Huntley was arrested there were news articles and neighbourhood watch groups asking people if their kids recognised or had any interactions with Ian or Maxine, I remembered seeing Maxine around regularly and she always looked really timid so it was a surprise to hear what had happened, crazy to remember watching the search on live TV at night when they found the badger mounds too and then in all the papers for weeks, just a case that's hard to forget, Holly & Jessica and Sarah Payne really changed the way kids are protected, got so many memories from that time.
