i have an incredibly huge stash. I had to rent a storage space to hold it. To be fair, it is knit/crochet is my full time job, but still it's too much. My goal is to use as much as possible so I don't need the storage space next year. That is a huge task. I like your idea of storing by color and keeping a manageable amount in each bin. I can then restock from my own stash.
I can definitely understand having a lot of yarn if it is your full time job and/or if you enjoy making large projects like blankets and such. By no means am I saying what anyone should do! :) This is just what works for me. It's not my full time job and I make small projects. I like your goals for restocking from your own stash! sell or donate some of it to shelters or charities if you dont get to use all of it
