Let's see... Knitting and crocheting over 50 years... Married nearly 37 years, in the same house... Definitely Maximalist! Totes in the basement and under beds in all three bedrooms. Boxes in three closets. Bags and bins waiting to be inventoried into my Ravelry stash. I love the stash feature on Ravelry, because I can sort by color, weight, yardage, fiber. So even though I have over 25 places to look, I can find a particular yarn very quickly!
This cracks me up! I have so much yarn & equals amounts of fabric! I have been crocheting & knitting since I was 8 & I’m 63 this month! My husband never complains though. I have a room just shoved full 😅! I’m not a planner, I’m a stasher !😂
As a minimalist that lives in a very small space i need to keep things very organized. I recently donated an entire bag of yarn. When i was new to crochet i would buy yarn just because i thought it was pretty, regardless of quality. I tend to try and use as much as i can before buying. For example, i'm currently making some little fish keychains for a friend who's daughter's birthday party is an ocean theme and i have a glut of pink so pink fish it is! I tend to buy less but higher quality yarns which, for me, bring me more joy 🙂
I just wanted to take a moment to express how much I am enjoying your videos on amigurumi-making! Your clear instructions and helpful tips have inspired me to try my hand at making these adorable creatures myself. I appreciate the time and effort you put into each of your videos, and it's evident that you have a true passion for this craft. Watching your videos and reading your blog posts has been such a valuable learning experience for me, and I feel like I'm improving with each project I tackle. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and creativity with the world, and for inspiring me to pursue my own amigurumi-making journey.
I’m a minimalist 😁 I organize by fiber! Acrylic, cotton, wool, specialty yarns and sock yarn. I only buy yarn for my next projects and have a max amount of WIPs. Whenever I finish a few projects I make a scrapyarn project to use up the leftovers. Works great for me!
I am a planner who could possibly pass for a hoarder. 😊 I bought lots of yarn from sheer excitement to start new projects and then filled my time with gift projects to do now. That was most of last year (all gifts). Now I’m fitting in making some things for myself. There are always gifts to be made! The hoarding part is from stocking up on Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Cotton Yarn colors that are now discontinued (the most vibrant ones!). No regrets as they make me happy every time I see them and I will happily use them all. I store mostly in tote bins to keep them safe from bugs and dust. The cottons go in a blanket bag for lack of display space. I want a better system to see them but for now it works, and no more bags of yarn strewn around the floor of the living room! It’s fun to read how people keep their yarn, and thank you for the eye candy!
My biggest problem right now is what kid of physical storage to do.dont have handyman to create a storage system nor am I handy enough to do it myself a while ago (yrs) I bought a free standing metal 6 compartment unit and have been trying to find something similar since.Went to the big box stores with no luck since I have discovered what I am really looking for is not shelving but closet organizing .Now all I have to figure out how many cubicles I need and what spacing I have Searched on the Web and have a ton of choices I think I am eclectic because I have just recently emerged from the RH worsted world to the modern yarn world.nothaving access to many retail sources I have gotten several mystery boxes and found all kinds of types of fibers and yarns but think I will probably stay loyal to the traditional yarns I have been using since starting to knit and then learning to crochet since I was 12
I'm a planner, but I do purchase yarns on a whim at times. When I find a pattern that I know I want to make in the near future, I will purchase the yarn and anything else I might need (zippers, buttons, embellishments), print off the pattern and store it all together in a clear plastic bin. I also have a file on my computer where I keep track of all the patterns I plan on making, along with the yarn type and color I would like to use, and any notes. I make sure to have the picture of the completed project as well - to jog the memory! Might seem over the top but it works for me. It also gives me a record of what I have made, how it turned out, and a photo of the completed project. I also note if it was a gift. If it was, I add who I gave it to so that I don't repeat a gift!!
I’m pretty much a planner, and although I don’t need a organization system, I decided to watch this anyways 😂 And I organize my yarn by weight and color coordination. But when it comes to planning for future projects, I like to write down a list of projects I love to make over and over (since I sell my finished pieces) and the amount of yarn it needs, and I keep that list where I can see it all the time or in a place I 100% know where it is. And when I go out and buy yarn, I like to look at different types of yarn and let my imagination soar and I like to think of other projects I could make- but I have one rule while yarn shopping. Don’t buy any yarn you didn’t write down on your list! Unless you absolutely positively know you’re going to use it 🤣 Happy crocheting and knitting, y’all! 🧶❤️
Thank you for sharing your wisdom!!!!! I knew there would be a planner to help those of us who are a bit of a mess when it comes to our stashes!!! 🤣🧶🙏🏻
I WAS the planner, until my neighbor so generously brought me three trash sacks of yarn! She was gifted a ton of it, took what she liked, then shared it. I couldn't turn down all that beautiful yarn now could I? 😂 I sort by project, then by fiber for the rest. I think you are so pretty and kind. May the love of Jesus Christ be with you.
My soul wants to be a Maximalist, but practicality has made me a planner. I live in a tiny remote town in the Canadian Arctic where I have zero opportunity to shop in person for yarn. Since I need to actually FEEL a yarn, I end up planning my projects, and then when I get south to civilization, I go to town filling my wish list. Ina few years, we will be retiring and are planning on full-time RV’ing until it’s no offer feasible. Once again, I will HAVE to be a planner completely because of space constraints. I know it’s not the end of the world by any stretch, but I SO envy your crazy room! It’s something I have always wanted to have, but northern homes are built with almost monastic practicality. 🤣
I'm reading all these great comments, and I am like "Should I put my organization style? I am not even near to the type of organization these other crocheters are..." So, I decided to add my own type of organizational style called "The Confusionist." I'm 48 and I started crocheting at a tender age (appr. 4-5 yo). Also, I was a military spouse for half of my age, traveling often, and never really having a stable place to live or furniture that would last years of being moved. My husband retired and now we have our own stable home with furniture that almost matches (who lived that life knows exactly what I mean by that). I had yarn in boxes most of my time in this life, packed over and over. Some never made it to their destination due to moving companies losing boxes etc. Now, I have to organize it because it is going out of control after unpacking it all! I am usually well organized, but when it comes to crafting and crochet/knitting, I am a mess. I have yarn all over the garage, in my walking closet, and Joann or Michael's paper bags. So, I am a confusionist, who would love to be a planner, but it is not one... yet.
I’m definitely eclectic! I am actually a counted cross stitcher and have tons of those supplies. My husband made new shelves for me and I got it all in order(though I know there is more in my “hoarder” garage. I usually only crochet baby blankets for friends…until I had a grandbaby 2 years ago. And another one a month ago! In researching patterns for blankets for them I fell back in love with crochet and my craft room is filling up! A skein of yarn takes up a lot more rom than a hank of floss! 🪡🧶
With you on the cross stitch supplies. I used to cross stitch, and all my floss was wound onto numbered cards that fit in two small plastic containers with dividers. It was so much easier to organize, and would all fit in a drawer! Between my fabric and my yarn I have a whole roomful! There’s so much variation in yarn weights, brands, fibres etc. that it’s much MUCH harder to organize! Im trying though! 😂
Very much in the same boat! I'm a "Jill of all trades, master of none" when it comes to crafting, having done a little bit of everything. I definitely have some hoarder tendencies, because I keep mostly all of my craft supplies even if I'm no longer actively using them, "just in case." My most recent passion is embroidery, and like you, I have a ton of those supplies. My craft room is cluttered with all sorts of various crafting materials, so I'm keeping my embroidery supplies in my bedroom for now, in a sort of controlled-chaos fashion. Organizing my crafting supplies is high on my to-do list, and now after watching so many crochet vids by Elise and other passionate folks, I've rekindled my love affair with crochet. Because I have so much in the way of embroidery flosses and fabrics (and I have a tub of 20-30 year-old yarn that I've saved from my crochet days that is filled to the brim), I'm trying VERY hard to not buy much in the way of new yarn, seeing as how it's so much more bulky than embroidery floss, and I have absolutely no place to put it. My plan is to use up as much of my old yarn as possible before buying any new, but I've already gone ahead and bought a few balls that were just too appealing to resist, cramming them into the packed-full tub and securing the stressed lid as best I could. Best laid plans and all that!
Your craft room looks great! The organized yarn stash adds so much to the atmosphere of the room. I have mostly wool yarn so I put them in plastic baggies to keep any kind of critters from messing with them. The acrylic yarns go in a see-through tote to keep the cats out of them, LOL.
Oh those kitty cats!! Thankfully mine don't mess with my yarn too much unless I'm blocking wool. I don't know what it is about wet wool but they want to tear it apart!! 🧶🧶🤣🤣
@@EliseRoseCrochet Could it be the smell of wet wool? I've seen this smell attract a fox to our front porch once when we had to air dry a woolen carpet. Maybe it's the same for your cats?
I am definitely eclectic. I recently had to downsize due to the loss of my husband. I donated two large garbage bags of various types of yarn to the church for charity work. I kept most of my worsted and sport weight yarns. I’m in the process of organizing my “craft closet” and have organized my yarn first by weight and then by color. I use stacked milk crates to store them. During the process, I’ve found so many half done projects that i had completely forgotten about. Some I’ll finish and some I’ll pull out and add to my stash to be reinvented. It’s been a real eye-opener!
I like to organize by weight then sub organize by color/brand. I’m a maximalist! I have 2 rooms with all 8 walls filled with yarn. My husband tells me every day that I have a sickness. Lol. I just love yarn and making wonderful projects. Buying yarn without a project in mind is a classic move for me. And I usually buy enough to make a large project.
I love how you organized your yarn , I am a maximalist. To much yarn every where , I try it is kinda organized 😅 If I like a yarn , I have to have it . Specially if it is on sale , I do donate and sell my projects.
Thanks, Elise! You inspired me and yesterday I reorganized all my yarns. I guess I am a minimalist because all my stash fit in one shelf unit, I organized it by weight and it looks so beautiful I can't stop staring at it LOL!!
I just love yarn! I started buying the clear zippered bags and put my future projects in them. I buy the larger bags for the cake yarns, for the chunky yarns, I have a closet that calls to me. I just can’t use it as fast as I can buy it. A girl can’t pass up a good sale. I live on a dirt road and dust is my enemy. Everything has to be protected. Love your yarn room!
Love this. I’m an eclectic yarn collector myself but my husband is the yarn collector that just buys because he likes the colour!! I don’t have a yarn room yet and it’s a mess.
Im definitely a collector. I collect and every few years cull my stash by giving bags away. I want to become more of a planner. Your channel on wpi is my next watch. I learn so much from you. And you have a wonderful demeanor and a beautiful face too!
I'm a planner/minimalist myself. I tend to buy what I need for each project. If I have any leftovers, I toss them into my ball bag (its an amazon gift bag haha). Once my ball bag is full of balls, I will pull them out, plan, and make an item out of them based on how much I have and what colors work well together 😂
I’m a planner, but when it comes to patterns & yarn magazines - I’m a maximalist. I think I am going to knit every piece in every mag. Thank goodness for digital versions!
I started loom knitting when my best friend moved and gave me all of her looms and yarn. I quickly ran out of projects for my family and made baby blankets for everyone I knew was having a baby (including my doctor). Then I started making hats for the homeless in my area, churches, shelters, and other less fortunate people in my area. Then came my obsession, beanies. I made several beanies per day, and my wonderful husband goes to yard sales and estate sales. He bought their whole stash of yarn twice and brought home 10 jumbo trash bags of yarn. I now have a 10 X 10 room for yarn. I have an 18-hole cubbie on my wall that holds some; I have 10 huge storage bags and 5 totes, and I am starting on the huge vacuum bags for storage. I think it's now called an obsession.
Dearest Elise! Well, I had to stop my ironing for a while, so many “home/mirror image” truths! I am a right eclectic maker and don’t feel bad about it … for now! I have been collecting nice boxes and baskets over the last few months in view of reorganising my stash. My latest idea has been to arrange my skeins in the fruit/veg mèche bags you can get in supermarkets so that I can see them whilst protect them from pesky so-and-sos along with lavender bags which I put making currently. You never fail to make me smile and laugh, many warm thanks for that! 🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶
I am a collector, and I buy yarn partly to use and partly because it´s beautiful (and I want it), I would like to store more of it in open organized ways, but a lot is in totes and bins for the moment. I do, however, separate and organize it by weight and in some cases by color and brand. It has also helped me enormously to catalog my collection on Ravelry so I know what I have when I am trying to decide on the yarn to use for projects.
When I first started crocheting about five years ago, I bought way too much yarn of all types out of enthusiasm and ignorance. I loved seeing it displayed on shelves in my office. As my skills grew and my interest honed, I realized I only wanted to do amigurumi crochet. Currently, I'm only using Paintbox DK so that's easy to sort by color. I moved the yarn from shelves to plastic bins to keep it from getting dusty and, after labeling the bins, stacked them around my work area. That way I can easily see which colors I need to order. The system is working well for the time being, at least until I go off on a tangent and only crochet coasters.
Sounds like you have found a system that works great for your current projects!! And I always worry that I'm going to become obsessed with something completely different!!! 🤣🤣🤣
I'm finding that i love amigurumi too! I've been thinking about ordering some of the paintbox. Can you tell me how the DK compares to a more traditional worsted? Is it a bit thinner than worsted? All of the different terms can be confusing 🙂 and my Google searches don't seem to be helpful 🙂 i know that there are slight variations, even within worsted but as a whole, would you say DK is typically a little thinner?
@@sarahferguson0 I'd love to be able to answer you about the worsted, but I've never used it for amigurumi. Maybe Elise can, since she knits and crochets with different weights. I've tried PaintBox Aran for afghans and didn't like it as well. I love the Paintbox DK because it's cheap and there are so many beautiful colors. I just finished making a Mario for my grandson who likes to play Super Mario and it turned out really well. Good luck with your amigurumi! I hope you have as much fun as I do with it.
@@sarahferguson0 Hi Sarah. Worsted is a heavier weight than DK. My personal opinion is that worsted works better for amigurumi because it fills the holes better. I would have to go down one or two hook sizes with DK which makes my hands hurt. Hope that helps.😊
@@EvieBear236 oh! I see now! Thank you so much. I currently use worsted with a 3.75 hook and honestly i really don't want to go any smaller than that 🙂
My house is super small and all my yarn is in project bags. I was so excited to buy Berrocco Vintage yarn to start knitting Little Cotton Rabbits that I bought a special rabbit makeup bag that was just perfect! 😂
I'm a planner/eclectic, I go to the store with a project and buy several different yarns/colors with the idea of doing more than one of the same project. I stopped crocheting for the last 6 years and one day I decided to organized my craft bins in the attic, so when I put all the yarns together I had 4 bins. First thing I did was decided to pick my needle back up again and to use up all the yarn before I purchased more but I didn't stick with the plan. I wanted to make a white shawl so I had to buy more yarn, I wanted a wool blend blanket so I bought more yarn. I really have no organization only bins, I put baby yarn in one bin, hat/scarf yarn in another, yarns for blankets in another, i pulled aside all my scrap/yarn that i wasn't going to use for a project and made baskets, cotton I made dish cloths, so I am using the yarn up just adding a few to it.
I only crochet a little and thought I'll be good with just a basket. That was a few months ago, now I have a big IKEA bag, and a steady source of thrift yarn the store would throw out otherwise... This video is a bit if a lifesaver.
Definitely a planner and eclectic. I get the yarn for a specific project, but because I have multiple WIPs they get put away to be later rediscovered. Right now, rediscovering yarn I got before marriage that has to be used up to be donated away because my husband has specific allergies and sensitivities to certain fibers who runs the risk of coming across them. Right now all rediscovered yarn he can't touch is in the "No Touchies Yarns" storage container.
I am definitely an eclectic! According to the Clutterbug organizing types, I am a bee (visual/micro-organizing) so I am in the process of shifting my yarn stash from under the bed bins to a pretty little glass front cabinet. I still have a little too much to fit, so I rotate my stash based on fiber type (summer yarns vs winter yarns) and then by weight. One day I will have everything in the cabinet and hopefully be a minimalist.
I sort my yarn in totes by weight/fiber type mostly. Some yarn is in plastic inside boxes for specific projects. I have multiple WIP's of both crochet and knitting. I will never use it all in my life but I have invoked a no new yarn/fiber policy. I also spin a bit and have a rigid heddle loom I want to learn to use. My desire is to gift acrylic and cotton items to family and charity. My other goal is to make as much clothing as I can so not to purchase many new wearables. Thanks for your awesome videos!
This is a little off topic. I've been watching videos about a group in Namibia South Africa going out to save the seals that have fishing lines wrapped around their necks. Part of the equipment that the guys and gals use are...crochet hooks!
I love this! ❤I guess I’m an eclectic mess working my way to being a planner, but then you see the yarn sales and ughh! I’m trying ! 😂I Time to organize some stash and make a plan! Thank you so much!
I'm definitely an eclectic maximalist...LOL I always hit up the clearance sales and have been known to clear a shelf of a yarn I love. I do use a lot of it, though. I've made things for my mom, my MIL and SIL, friends, etc. I do need to drag it all out, and see what I have, then organize it....preferably on a day when my husband isn't here! Now that craft shows are happening again, I will go through a lot of it, so that's good, but I'm quite sure I have enough to fill a yarn store. :)
Knitting and crocheting for over 40 years. I'd say I have a maximalist personality. Yarn in totes, bins, plastic drawers, under the bed, and in a pantry type cupboard. Projects are also everywhere. My bedroom doubles as my craft room. I have organized by brand, some types (Cotton, Buffalo wool and Phentex), and weights. I created Excel spreadsheets for my stash inventory and included leftovers by weighing amount and calculating yardage. I attempted to do inventory into Ravelry but don't have the patience to photograph each category in my stash. I used to buy yarn at thrift stores and yard sales in order to add to yarns already in my stash. This year I am determined not to buy unless I have to use for specific project. I joined a knitting group hoping to be inspired enough to use my stash. I am still working on UFOs issues.
Great video Elise, and great timing as well. My hubby and I are about to hit the road permanently travelling and I still plan on crochet and knitting as we travel, so you have got me thinking about how I will organised my small stash🤔. Luckily I am a planner so I normally buy as I need but as I am now into toy projects I have realised that I will need to keep some colours on hand. I think for me it will be working out what my favourite yarn will be for toys and sticking to that. So I will always have room and colours I need.
This reminds me of Clutterbugs Organization Bugs and I love it! I am a Maximalist-Planner mix. I sort mine by weight and color. I mainly have three sizes I use so that’s pretty easy for me to do. It looks stunning and I can see what I have. I also (don’t laugh) I have a yarn inventory on my computer and whenever I buy more I enter them into the file. That tells me what I have and how much I have. I even keep a small part of it on my phone so I check check it while I shop. But that’s what works for me and will not be everyone’s personality, like you said.
I'm a blend of maximalist and collector. I buy the yarn that appeals to me first and ask questions later. I'm very intuitive and sensory about my yarn purchases. If it looks and feels good, I know I will find a use for it, so I buy it. Then, I bring it home and sort it into the boxes my husband gets when he orders wine, first according to brand, then color, then weight. I keep them with me in my room where I sit to read, watch movies, and crochet, instead of the bedroom closet, where it would be more practical, because there's something comforting about being able to see and touch my yarn in the place where I spend most of my free time. It eases my anxiety to be close to my yarn, and I think it gives my room the kind of good energy that makes my cats spend so much time in here with me. That's just what works for me, and every crafter has their own special relationship with the supplies they need to enjoy their hobbies and enrich their lives.
I've been knitting and crocheting for about 4 years now. I am definitely a maximalist. I love mystery boxes and subscription boxes. Plus, I can't really pass on a great deal. My yarn is organized by brand. I have a wire shelving unit where I store all my yarn. I refer to it as my yarn wall. All WIPs go on the WIPmas tree (coatrack). I keep a running inventory of all my yarn, kits, hooks, and needles that I can access when I'm out and about to refer to when I'm yarn shopping.
Elise, what a delightful video!!! As an artist/art educator for many years and an avid knitter (and recent crocheter) I love organizing my yarn as a painter's palette!!! I so enjoyed hearing about the different personality types for organizing yarn!!! Delighted that Premier Yarns made this feature!!!!
Thank you, Michele!!! This was a fun video to make and I am so excited how my craft room turned out!! You're so right, it's like a painter's palette with the different colors all arranged! 🎨🖌️🧶
I am mostly a planner, with a bit of a tendency to hoard XD I do not always have an exact pattern in mind (but quite often I do), but I always have a general idea of what will I make of the yarn. What makes me a hoarder is that I have yarns and projects for the next 3-4 years, but that does not stop me from buying more and planning more :D I store my yarns by projects, ongoing and planned separated, also a scrap pile with all the remnants.
I am definitely an Eclectic collector of yarn. I have yarn specifically for projects, but I also have a lot of yarn purchased on a whim or from yard sales. I have been gifted others yarn collections, too. I store it in bins, reusable bags, handmade creations, and on display. I would love to have it all organized in one area, but space is an issue. I hope to have a craft room one day, but I have so many crafts, it would have to be a big room. Lol. I also sew, do diamond art, paint, embroider, punch needle, and much more. I have stopped buying materials unless asked to make a specific item that I do not already have what I need. Thank you for your inspiring videos. Happy Crochet!
I’m definitely a planner person and a collector. My storage area is large enough to store my yarn in clear labeled storage bins by type, brand & fiber. I also store my yarn in labeled ziplock storage bags in the bins🧶
I'm probably a Minimalist/Planner mutt, but I'm also a baby crocheter (started less then 6 months ago) and live in a 1-room Appartment. I keep my tools like hooks, stitch markers, darning needle and so on in a washbag. It was way cheaper then the bags advertised for knitting/chrocheting, is very sturdy because it's made from nylon, has enough compartments for my needs and enough space to pack smaller projects like coasters or granny squares plus the yarn I'd need when I travel. The rest of my yarn I keep in cardboard boxes organized by project. Since I don't have space for more then 3 or 4 projects it keeps it neat and it was a cheap option (but I know I'd have a lot more, if I had the space). For now I keep the "next in line projects" I don't have space for yet organized in an App. It allows me to note the yarn I picked either online or in the store, the pattern, hooksize and everything else, so when I finish something and can start a new project I know what yarn I picked and where to get it. This system allowed me to start crocheting for around 35€ (yarn not included) so it's very beginner friendly.
I think I'm a maximalist collector! I love fingering weight and DK weight the best so I organize those weights first, then by brand. I have a ton of yarn. I bought two large armoires and have most of it in there, and I also bought some storage bins with windows for my favorite yarn and I labeled the outside with the fiber content. When I buy more yarn I write it down and try to check off the ones I use in a project. I always tell myself that I must use more before buying more, but yarn is my weakness and guilty pleasure! 🥰
Hi Elise. I think I'm the eclectic. I sometimes buy with a project in mind and other times I go to thrift stores to look for sport weight and fingering weight yarns for making my dolls and amigurumis. I have my yarn sorted into cottons, soft yarns, rough yarns, some brands, and others by yarn thickness.
I'm both minimalist and planner, but: - I don't plan for the whole year, but for a month. - I do buy yarn I'm not going to immediately use if there's a sale. On rare occasions I buy a skein of yarn I fancy to treat myself. But usually I only buy what I need for my current or next project. I don't have a lot of yarn for these reasons. I do like seeing other knitters' and crocheters' stash, but I find as much joy in finishing the yarn I currently have as in buying new yarn. Also I keep a written inventory where I keeo track of everything.
I am pretty much a crafter. I have little projects which I haven't started yet . Different gifts. Needlepoints, latch hooks, knitting ideas etc, and my crochet ideas & patterns. I started with books and watching my mom's friend. Now I have ebooks and pictures on my computer and cellphone. So I have sorted it out and now I am sorting out my yarn stash, I realize that I have very thin yarn to very thick yarn. (Thickness is before hand knitting yarn). I think I am between collector, planner and eclectic.
I am definitely an eclectic. I have been storing my yarn mostly by fiber. In my closet are totes by fiber and on display is by fiber and brand. But I really want it to be by color so it is pretty and inspires me.
I am an eclectic hoarder XD (ok I guess you could say I'm a maximalist) and I sort by weight and by project. I sort everything by weight, and then pick a bunch of projects some yarns inspire, and then pack those into project bags. It's useful!
Let's see. I have a large antique basket holding all my amigurumi yarns sitting in the corner of my bedroom. Behind the door of said room are 3 tubs of random yarns, mostly 4 wt. acrylics that I dig thru every time I need something. I have a box that I keep my Soft Secret and Simply Soft yarns in on top of the tubs. In my living room is my wip and the yarns used in it, kept in an antique wooden bowl on legs that I inherited from my grandmother via my mom. I must be a bit of all the types. Great video, both fun and thought provoking.
I used to buy yar in Willy hilly fashion. I bought modtly one skein of yarns thst appealed to me. So… I moved frim Ma three bedroom house to a very small one bedroom apartment…and no longer have the space to store lots of yarn. I find myself buying yarns for particular projects these days. Since most of my knitting and crocheting is for charity, and gifts…it works our fairly well.
Great video! Love your yarn room! I'm pretty sure that I'm a maximalist ... and am sure my Husband would agree with me lol. My mission this year is to use my "inventory" for as many crochet projects as possible. I've completed 4 projects so far and all were pulled from my yarn cabinet. My Husband found a beautiful hutch with glass doors on top and doors/drawers on the bottom for only $100. What a find! I couldn't believe my eyes when he brought it home! We gathered up the yarn from various places in our house and filled up the cabinet. I feel so organized now and so inspired every time i look at it. I have it organized by yarn weight and type. I do have to "confess" that I just purchased yarn for Ophelia Talks yarn CAL - Jewel of the Nile. I just couldn't resist. Thanks again for your video - great as always. Take care, Kris K from Connecticut 🧶🙂🌻
I am a planner and a minimalist. I sort by color only and then if I have part wool or fingering those go in their own drawer. I started with a nine drawer cubby and then found an old dresser that is perfect for my yarn life. I was so excited when I found the dresser and the dresser was free when our university was cleaning out a building.
Great video. All my yarns are in totes stacked on each other or in clear storage bags. Hopefully they’ll be showcased as soon as my room is completed. I love to see my yarn and I love to collect also.
Planner here! I literally have an excel spreadsheet where I type all the details of the projects, one per page, all in an index in the first page which links to each project. Organized in priority and season. I might be making some winter garment for me but if someone's birthday or special day is coming, it would have more priority and leave other projects on pause. I save money on advance for the big sales throughout the year to buy a bunch of yarn and buy it with its projects on mind. They're organized by project in transparent plastic bags because of dust and moths. I currently have 4 projects: a poncho for my boyfriend that looks like one I made a couple years ago but in grey shades. A butterfly shawl for me in white, pastel pink, lilac and baby blue. A throw blanket for the living room and a set of place mats. That's their order of priority too. A whole lot of other projects are in queue depending on when I finish the mentioned ones
i learned the hard way to keep the ball bands with the yarn. I like to organize by weight because I also weave on my rigid heddle looms. Also, I like to keep my yarn in tubs so it doesn’t get dusty. Although it is beautiful displayed.
Thank you for the great video - it's nice to see a breakdown of the different types! Love the comments as well - nice to see how other folks organize their yarns. I am definitely eclectic with a whole lot of maximalist (also allows me to supply my friends with yarn if they ever need it!). I've found making yarn categories that work for me helps with organization. it goes something like: Specialty Yarns (angora, baby alpaca, thin hand dyed something or other), Cottons, Old Standards (red heart, I love this yarn), Chunky, Velvet/Chenille yarns, and WIP yarns.
My sister had to downsize her stash when she moved in with her partner, so she passed quite a lot of yarn to me (added to my already quite good stash lol!). There are different weights and styles, some in whole balls, some part-used. There's not really enough of each yarn for a reasonable-sized project, so I've decided to organise by colour. I've found some blanket patterns to work in the round, and I'm going to use the more interesting yarns for a centre block, then use up others of the same weight and colour palette for a wider band around it, and THEN I'll add a nice edging to finish it off and bring it all together. Just about finished my first centre panel, so I'm going to hunt through it all tomorrow to find the complimentary colours ;)
Thanks for the breakdown of yarn stash types. I'm not sure which one I am, but I know I love seeing my yarn. I sort by color, type, and weight. But, I also have lots of variegated yarns that I'm not sure where they fit. I love your shelving system. I've got to figure out how to display some of my finished work better. Right now it's all in a see through bin. You gave me some great inspiration. Thanks again.
I’m defo eclectic, trouble I’d I’m in the UK out house isn’t small but also not big, we’ve kept one bedroom for guests, another one is a shared office with hubby and the smallest room is my craft storage, I need to invest in cubby storage for my yarn, it’s in boxes at present, thank you so much for this podcast! X
Addicted to buying amigurami crochet patterns on etsy 🙊 and no yarn to make any of the 50 plus patterns yet, I created a spreadsheet with all the projects and the recommended yarn for each and placed two massive yarn orders from abroad. Yarn for every project. I'm here because I figured I'm going to need a way to organise them. SOOOO does that make me a planner or just crazy? lol 🙊 Next I'm going to have to learn how to crochet properly. Yikes!
I am relatively new to crochet (less than 2 years) and started by buying everything…. Then I realized that my stash would outlive me if I kept that up so now I am a planner/minimalist. My stash is organized by fiber and the projects that are ready to go are in mesh bags with the project name in them…
I currently separate my yarn by fiber type: wool and wool blends (also alpaca) are together and cotton, linen, and silk are together. After that they are broken into yarn weight: bulky, worsted, sport, fingering, and lace. I think you are right about the personality types though, because I simply don't understand the people who think organize simply by color is a good idea unless you have a small stash or only use a single type of yarn. I rarely buy yarn without a pattern I want to use it for. My problem is that I am not a fast knitter (as a raw beginner) or crocheter, so I forget what I bought it for by the time I get to it. So my next step is to put my written yarn inventory into a digital format where I can also leave notes on what I plan to make with that yarn. It will also make it easy for me to sort my yarn supply many, many different ways.
This arrived just in time. I've been looking at my craft room deciding how I want to organize my yarn. I'm eclectic so I'll probably go by weight. I use crochet thread and fingering mostly but a considerable amount of DK and worsted as well ha ha . I crochet, knit, cross stitch and sew
I'm watching this on December 31st, since I'm hoping to get more organized for 2024. I love how your yarn stash looks, but I don't have so much space. You are so intuitive about yarn people. I'm definitely eclectic and own lots of wonderful yarns that I've forgotten about. It's kind of fun to finally find them, but also a bit frustrating. Thanks so much for all your videos. I'm so happy I discovered your channel a few months ago.
I'm a little bit of everything 😂😢..have bins and vacuum shrink bags, upstairs and in garage. Some was my original stash from before I was bedridden 😢 and couldn't do anything, then good meds and long rehab, 😅😅🎉❤inherited yarn from some friends who no longer knit or crochet, plus lots of yarn from resale stores....organized by brand, then by fiber, then by weight, wool and wool blends are together, regardless of brand, they get a cedar block or two, yarn under couch and guest bed, they are cakes. Some afghan assortments curated for C2C projects.. love making shawls and gifting them to friends, kitchen cotton making bowl lifters for microwave and gifting those to my health care people and other friends and family.. wanted to teach crochet, then Covid happened, so just started my "yarmy" of new crocheters, have 3 students so far..😊
I am definitely eclectic! I usually organize by weight and then color. Have a lot out to see and some syored away. As a mostly amigurumi seller, this is what has been working for me so far❤
My neice gave me some pointers on what has worked for her before I start working on my projects... one is an open hair pin (the kind that aren't called bobby pin), she uses them to anchor her pieces where she wants them placed... after she has balled her yarn, she uses a barrette to hold the end outside on the ball... she has also put her polyfill in a ziplock bag & then in a drawstring bag (it travels well that way).. she uses counters for rows so she can track where she is in the pattern.. she has really helped to make my project fear go away... along with your videos...
Definitely a Collector and my yarn stash is organised by fibre. I don’t have it on display though, I worry about moths, so it’s in plastic bags and boxes.
I take what my kids call the mom packing for vacation approach with my project. once I decide on the pattern and yarn I put it all in a 2.5 gallon ziplock and write on the outside the yarn color brand and lot, the hook size, and the pattern I'm doing. My kids say it looks like when I packed for vacation when they were little and sorted all there close by outfit and day in a zip lock (before packing cubes were a thing)
Combination of planner and minimalist. I organize any leftover project yarn by weight and fiber for future scrap projects. I inherited my mom's yarn stash after her passing in 2015, and it was very overwhelming to deal with a wall of yarn. Accomplished that as of November 2022. Very nice to be back to my previous ways and buying yarn again.
This is great. I've only been crocheting since 2020 but I'm able to get tons of free yarn from a charity due to my job and I've accumulated a lot in 3 years. I needed to figure out a better organizing system then just the box in an storage room.
Definitely a maximalist. I have somewhat organized by volor and by project but i also have several projects going at once some sometimes use the same yarn in different projects - trying to use what i have. It's totally confusing even to me! I'm gonna study this video and figure out how best to sort - when i get home! I'm also a wonderful procrastinator. TFS.
Hi Elise, love your videos and always find some tidbit that’s useful. I am an eclectic, I think. (There’s a clue right there!) I also change my organization often-like sort by color, by weight, by fiber, etc. I think the “sort by weight” works best for me, especially since I buy yarn then come up with a project, which sends me hunting through my stash to see what I already have that will work together. Also like clear plastic 30-31 gal. Tubs to store it. All I have to do is pick up a tub and turn it around to see what’s in it. Nothing hides. These tubs fit perfectly in my 4 x 4 cubicle wall unit where I can close the doors-otherwise it’s too distracting. LOL! I could start a small yarn store. More will go in a yarn sale this year as I have learned what I really like and the rest can go. (Sorry, this got kind of long!)
That is incredible!!!! I'm so impressed!! Thanks so much for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
That sounds so much like me except I don’t know what is ravelry stash?
Thanks for the Ravelry stash tip. Just checked it out and Love it!
What does Ravelry mean?
This cracks me up! I have so much yarn & equals amounts of fabric! I have been crocheting & knitting since I was 8 & I’m 63 this month! My husband never complains though. I have a room just shoved full 😅! I’m not a planner, I’m a stasher !😂
I am almost 12, I've been crocheting since spring-summer 2023 and I want as much yarn as you 😂 that would be my dream ❤
Awesome!! I'm sure you will someday!! 🧶🧶🧶
That's wonderful!! And those little girls are going to love pink fishies!!! 🐟🐠🐡
Awww! That's amazing!! You are so welcome and thank you for your kind words!! 🧶🧶🧶
I enjoy reading how everyone else organizes and stores their yarn too!! Thanks for sharing yours!! 🧶🧶🧶
That is incredible!!!! Oh how I wish I could be as organized as you are!!! 🧶🧶🧶
That’s amazing and soooo smart!! Thanks for sharing these tips/ideas.
Really 😮..
Unless you absolutely positively know you’re going to use it 🤣
Happy crocheting and knitting, y’all!
I sort by project, then by fiber for the rest. I think you are so pretty and kind. May the love of Jesus Christ be with you.
You had no choice but to take that yarn off your neighbor's hands!! 😂🧶😂🧶
😂
3 SACKS OF YARN????
My grandma does this to me 😂❤❤
My soul wants to be a Maximalist, but practicality has made me a planner. 🤣
Your life sounds amazing!!! It's funny how you always want what you don't have!!! 🧶🧶🧶
I'm reading all these great comments, and I am like "Should I put my organization style? I am not even near to the type of organization these other crocheters are..." So, I decided to add my own type of organizational style called "The Confusionist."
I'm 48 and I started crocheting at a tender age (appr. So, I am a confusionist, who would love to be a planner, but it is not one... yet.
It's sounds like you've done the best you could over the years!! Now that you're settled I'm sure you'll find what works best for you! 🧶🧶🧶
Thank you for sharing!! And you're so right about the size, yarn isn't small!! 🧶🧶🧶
I am a minimalist cause im just buying yarns when i have projects and thank you for sharing this topic 💓💓
You are so welcome! 🧶🧶🧶
I'm so sorry about your husband. Sounds like you really blessed your church!! 🧶🧶🧶
Haha!! Love it!! If you have a sickness then I have it too!! 😂😂😂
I love how you organized your yarn , I am a maximalist. To much yarn every where , I try it is kinda organized 😅 If I like a yarn , I have to have it . Specially if it is on sale , I do donate and sell my projects.
Hahaha!! Love it!!! 😂🧶😂🧶
Thanks, Elise! You inspired me and yesterday I reorganized all my yarns. I guess I am a minimalist because all my stash fit in one shelf unit, I organized it by weight and it looks so beautiful I can't stop staring at it LOL!!
Oooh!!! I know the feeling, it's so hard to stop looking at it!! 🧶🧶🧶
Thanks so much for sharing!! And that's a great idea to use the big zippered bags!!! 🧶🧶🧶
Love this. I’m an eclectic yarn collector myself but my husband is the yarn collector that just buys because he likes the colour!! I don’t have a yarn room yet and it’s a mess.
Love that your husband loves yarn too!! 🧶🧶🧶
Im definitely a collector. I collect and every few years cull my stash by giving bags away. I want to become more of a planner. Your channel on wpi is my next watch. I learn so much from you. And you have a wonderful demeanor and a beautiful face too!
Thank you so much for sharing and your kind words! 🧶🧶🧶
I am for sure a collector with my yarn organized by color. Thanks for the video. Definitely helps to learn more about myself. ❤
How fun!!! I love seeing yarn organized by color!! 🧶🧶🧶
Haha!! Love it!! Sounds like you're having fun and that's wonderful that your husband is helping! 🧶🧶🧶
That's wonderful!!! And what a great idea for yarn storage!! Love the idea of adding lavender bags! 🧶🧶🧶
I currently use worsted with a 3.75 hook and honestly i really don't want to go any smaller than that 🙂
I literally thought about this a 1/2 hour ago for spring decluttering! Thank you!
That's great! Glad it was good timing! 🧶🧶🧶
My house is super small and all my yarn is in project bags. I was so excited to buy Berrocco Vintage yarn to start knitting Little Cotton Rabbits that I bought a special rabbit makeup bag that was just perfect! 😂
Awwww! That's wonderful!! One of my favorite yarns ever!! 🧶🧶🧶
That's wonderful!! Sounds like you've got a good plan!! 🧶🧶🧶
I only crochet a little and thought I'll be good with just a basket. That was a few months ago, now I have a big IKEA bag, and a steady source of thrift yarn the store would throw out otherwise... This video is a bit if a lifesaver.
It creeps up so quickly!! I'm so glad the video was helpful!! 🧶🧶🧶
Thank you for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
That's wonderful!!! Thank you for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
I’m trying to order by project now but I still order random yarn cuz it’s pretty! I love the way your craft room is evolving❣️😊
Thank you so much!! 🧶🧶🧶
That's amazing!!! Thanks so much for sharing! Sounds like you have a plan and that you're disciplined enough to follow through!! 🧶🧶🧶
This is a little off topic. I've been watching videos about a group in Namibia South Africa going out to save the seals that have fishing lines wrapped around their necks. Part of the equipment that the guys and gals use are...crochet hooks!
Oh wow!! That is amazing!!!! Thanks for sharing that!!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
OCN - amazing work they do!!!
Hi Elise 🤗 I’m definitely an eclectic type! Thank you for another great video! Now I’m inspired to reorganise my stash! 🥰🧶🤩
It's so much fun to reorganize the yarn stash! 🧶🧶🧶
I love this! ❤I guess I’m an eclectic mess working my way to being a planner, but then you see the yarn sales and ughh! I’m trying ! 😂I Time to organize some stash and make a plan! Thank you so much!
Haha!!! I want to be a planner, but my maximalist tendencies usually win!! 🤣
Haha!!! It's just so hard not to buy yarn when it's a good deal!! 🧶🧶🧶
I started out as a yarn collector doing crochet a few years ago. Within the last year, I have become a planner.
I'm so glad to know that a person can change!! There's hope for me yet!! 🧶🧶🧶
That's wonderful!! Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
Oh how fun!!! What an adventure you will have!! 🧶🧶🧶
Oh my goodness!!! You are a genius!! I want to me a maximalist/planner type too!! And I love the Clutterbug, she's amazing!! 🧶🧶🧶
Your space sounds heavenly!!! 🧶🧶🧶
Oooh!!! Sounds like you have a great system!!! How fun!! 🧶🧶🧶
Thanks for sharing! You sound a lot like me! 🧶🧶🧶
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I’m definitely a planner person and a collector. My storage area is large enough to store my yarn in clear labeled storage bins by type, brand & fiber. I also store my yarn in labeled ziplock storage bags in the bins🧶
That's wonderful!! 🧶🧶🧶
That's fantastic!!! Sounds like you are making the most of your space and it sounds very cozy! 🧶🧶🧶
You sound very organized too!!! 🧶🧶🧶
That's great!! Thanks so much for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
I'm both minimalist and planner, but:
- I don't plan for the whole year, but for a month.
That's wonderful!!! I admire your discipline! 🧶🧶🧶
Thanks so much for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I am definitely an eclectic. I have been storing my yarn mostly by fiber. In my closet are totes by fiber and on display is by fiber and brand. But I really want it to be by color so it is pretty and inspires me.
Yes!! Sorting my color just gets all my creative juices flowing!! 🧶🧶🧶
I started crocheting a few months ago and I'm a minimalist so far but seeing all the beautiful yarn everywhere... I don't think it will last long😅
Haha, we never do! 😂
I learned years ago both crochet and knitting but started to practice them almost a year ago. For now I'm a minimalist. 😂😂
Oh boy, I have a feeling you're on your way to eclectic soon!! 🧶🧶🤣🧶🤣🧶
@@EliseRoseCrochet 🤣
I am an eclectic hoarder XD (ok I guess you could say I'm a maximalist) and I sort by weight and by project. I sort everything by weight, and then pick a bunch of projects some yarns inspire, and then pack those into project bags. It's useful!
Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
I’d say I’m a mix of The Planner and The Maximalist and I organise my yarn but project. Love this video ❤
That's awesome! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!! 🧶🧶🧶
Thanks so much for sharing, Jim!! Sounds like you have a good yarn organization system and you know where everything is!! 🧶🧶🧶
I am eclectic. I love yarn. ❤ I organize by weight and color. Your videos are very helpful, and give me inspiration. Thank you so much. 😊
You're so welcome! 🧶🧶🧶
I get so many yarn gift cards and I can’t wait to use it.
Lucky!!!! Have fun!!! 🧶🧶🧶
Hi! Can you make a video of one colour crochet projects? I feel it would be a good idea ❤
That's a great idea!! Thanks for the suggestion!! 🧶🧶🧶
@@EliseRoseCrochet you’re welcome 😁 have a great day 😊
Eclectic - thats me, to a *T* 😄 Wonderful video, LPS.!!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!! 🧶🧶🧶
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
As someone with a bit of storage space, I need to start organizing my yarns. I have so much yarn, I swear I could be a yarn store. 😂😮🧶
Haha!! That's a good problem to have!! 🧶🧶🧶
Your cabinet sounds gorgeous!!! And I'll have to check out that CAL, sounds amazing! 🧶🧶🧶
I'm so guilty of "Yarnoholic" personality.
Great information. Thank you and blessings to you.
You are so welcome!! 🧶🧶🧶
That's amazing!!! I haven't thought of using drawers before but that actually sounds like such a good idea!! ❤️ Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Great video. All my yarns are in totes stacked on each other or in clear storage bags. Hopefully they’ll be showcased as soon as my room is completed. I love to see my yarn and I love to collect also.
That's wonderful! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
You are my hero!!! 🧶🧶🧶
Eclectic. A bin for each project: always 1 blanket and 1 or 2 amigurumi. The rest by brand, then color.
Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
i learned the hard way to keep the ball bands with the yarn. I like to organize by weight because I also weave on my rigid heddle looms. Also, I like to keep my yarn in tubs so it doesn’t get dusty. Although it is beautiful displayed.
Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
That's a great way to organize! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
That's amazing!!! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I'm so glad you found it helpful!! 🧶🧶🧶
You're so welcome! 🧶🧶🧶
SOOOO does that make me a planner or just crazy? lol 🙊
Next I'm going to have to learn how to crochet properly. Yikes!
Sounds like you are very organized to me!! 🧶🧶🧶
I am relatively new to crochet (less than 2 years) and started by buying everything…. Then I realized that my stash would outlive me if I kept that up so now I am a planner/minimalist. My stash is organized by fiber and the projects that are ready to go are in mesh bags with the project name in them…
That is amazing!! I love that you started in one category and then realized it wouldn't work for you!! That's inspirational!! 🧶🧶🧶
Thanks for sharing! Yes, if they only use one type of yarn I could see it working. It's sooo pretty though!! 🧶🧶🧶
Reminds me of the Secret Yarnery Yarn Haul Video its a Must watch
Oooh! I'll have to check it out!! 🧶🧶🧶
I am the planner and the minimalist. All my yarn have project plans for it.
That's admirable!! I want to be like you!!! 🤣🧶🤣🧶
That's wonderful!! I'm glad it was good timing!! 🧶🧶🧶
I think I am eclectic, too! I enjoyed your video! ❤
Thank you! 🧶🧶🧶
Ian an eclectic. My yarn is in totes & was organized by brand but I think it’s time to revisit my system. Great video.💜😁
Thank you!! 🧶🧶🧶
Thank you!! Enjoy organizing your yarns for 2024! 🧶🧶🧶
That's wonderful! Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
I am definitely eclectic! I usually organize by weight and then color. Have a lot out to see and some syored away. As a mostly amigurumi seller, this is what has been working for me so far❤
That's great! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
That's a great idea! Thanks for sharing!!! ❤️❤️❤️
That's wonderful that you were able to use up all her yarn! 🧶🧶🧶
Thank you, so much good information! 13:56 13:56 13:56
Thank you so much!! 🧶🧶🧶
This is great. I've only been crocheting since 2020 but I'm able to get tons of free yarn from a charity due to my job and I've accumulated a lot in 3 years. I needed to figure out a better organizing system then just the box in an storage room.
Lucky you!! 🧶🧶🧶
I organize by weight and then by color. I love the rainbow on my shelves lol plus I only use like two weights of yarn.
I love organizing my color!!! 🧶🧶🧶
TFS.
Haha!! You sound a lot like me!! 🤣
My personality type is "my flat is small", so I use the "it MUST fit in the two big boxes under the desk" stash-storing style.
That's very practical! 🧶🧶🧶
Ooh! That's a great way to organize them!! Thanks so much for sharing!! And no need to apologize!! 🧶❤️🧶❤️
Thank you so much, I love your video 😍
I am definitely a maximalist and I am very happy with that 🥰😉
Greetings from the Netherlands 😘
That's wonderful!!!! Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
