I stayed in a hotel that was directly over a subway line in Moscow. I could very faintly hear the rumble of trains after I woke up. A faint rumble every two minutes... Every. Two. Minutes. Amazing system.
On the Baumanskaya (Бауманская) station on the blue line the waiting time is 40 seconds during rush hours. So it's literally one train leaving and the next one leaving the tunnel in 15-20 seconds.

As a russian citizen who just recently was able to try out metro in Saint-Petersburg when i traveled there i was also fascinated by how good metro system has been built. It is convenient, quite fast and most stations have nice ornament.
I can vouch for Moscow train system, it's so expansive you can go almost anywhere and never bother about having a car. And each year they add more and more new lines that cover new districts and let you go further into the suburban regions. At worst in any spot in the region you're 10-20 minutes away from riding a train to the center, away from the center, sideways on one of the 5 circle lines, or even just to the nearest line. Going to university on a train every day for 5 year made me love this place A LOT. And looking at most other train systems around the world, i'm not impressed lmao.
Never in my life would I have thought I could find someone who loves the Moscow metro as much as me 😂😂 this video brings back a lot of good memories from my time there. My commute everyday was about 15-20 minutes and sometimes I wished it was longer or I had to change lines more because it was fun to me. Plus I read through three books in four months which is an absolute dream. I considered those escalators great exercise and walked them every day lol

A week ago the BCL metro line was fully opened. As someone, for whom it's usual to commute throught the city, i can say that it was a huge change, my travel time dropped by 30 minutes. Well, some stations are quite faceless and unlikable, but there are many deserving being called a piece of art.
First of all, great video! I also believe that Moscow's metro is the best in the world. However, I wanted to make a few comments, having lived in Moscow for most of my life and using the metro A LOT 1. There are about 20 million people in the Greater Moscow area, and those who live outside the city also use it a lot (plus now there are many stations that go outside of Moscow), so it's not a very fair usage comparison with New York - it's more of 45% of the people rather than 75%, which still is a lot!! 2. If you take into account average salaries in Moscow, then the prices are relatively similar to US underground systems, so it's not cheap for the majority of citizens as it is for tourists. 3. During rush hour there's a crazy amount of people, especially on some lines like the green one, which also has old cars without AC, so during the winter when you're cramped in your sweater and winter coat or during the summer where you can hardly breathe, nobody would tell you it's the best metro in the world lol 4. And lastly, other modes of transport aren't nearly as good as the metro, so I would definitely not claim the whole public transportation the best in the world. For example, the buses improved a lot in the past 10 years, but still huge number of bus lines that aren't in downtown don't have a schedule at all and don't have any signs/maps on the bus stop, so even if you live in the city and get to a new neighborhood it's impossible to get somewhere without the internet. 5. I would also add the fact that the metro sells bracelets and rings(!!!) through which you can pay instead of your transport card - now that's very cool! You can also pay with your credit card on most stations and they just launched a test in a few stations to pay through face recognition! P.S. If you're so into Moscow Metro, I'd recommend reading the book called Metro 2033, which is based in the future after a nuclear war, where the only safe place is the metro, which is sealed off. It was super super popular when it came out!
I agreeee!!! Was in Moscow in 2007 from Oct-Dec and loooved the city..the history, the beauty in the cold and warmth in the the people. I took the metro often and could go on and on about how its the best system in the world as well. Gorgeous each station..unique, grand and abundant in expression. I went to learn the language at MGU for that time and came home tauting its amazing subway system....I say the exact same thing as you when I compare my city's metro to Moscows...hands down, Moscow's Metro wins on all counts. The long escalaters, the best!

A little clarification! Travel to the Metro in Moscow costs 47 rubles on the Troika card! That's 0,63 cents! At the same time, you can switch from one line to another for free - all transfers are free on all 14 lines, unlike the London metro! At the same time, there are 241 metro stations in Moscow, and several new ones are built every year.

While from a strictly western perspective much can be sad negatively about Russian geopolitics, having visited the country; Moscow truly is a crown jewel capital and runs like a Swiss watch next to any big city in the Anglosphere. Even my native Australia with Melbourne trams, which is considered next to the London Underground, the best in the English speaking world; doesn't compare in quality to the Moscow Metro. Hope peace returns and relations normalised while I am still young, as never seeing Moscow or St. Petersburg again is a depressing thought.
Interesting information: during the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945), there was a bomb shelter in the Moscow metro, where civilians descended during Nazi air raids. According to various sources, during the 4 years of the war, from 217 to 243 children were born in the metro!
90 seconds between metro trains might be amazing for folks from the USA, but it's pretty standard in many metro systems around the world. Paris, Tokyo, Seoul and many, many others. Even here in Santiago, Chile, you can see trains every minute on Line 1 in peak times.
Moscow metro is indeed a great example of how an efficient rapid transit system should be operated. It’s also actively expanding (something we miss so much in New York or Chicago) and it’s also being properly maintained thanks to nightly shutdowns (it’s a tradeoff, as the 24/7 service in New York is limiting the amount time available for maintenance). But then Moscow metro also has its downside: lack of wheelchair accessibility, particularly at the older, most beautiful stations at the center. Both New York and (especially!) Chicago are actively retrofitting their older stations for accessibility. In Moscow this kind of an effort is not being made that much. Though new stations are indeed accessible, older stations are not being retrofitted for that. Chances are that such retrofitting might not even be possible from engineering perspective. Note that accessibility helps not only wheelchair-bounded passengers but also healthy people with babies on strollers or with heavy luggage.
Nice Video! Curious why you used the population for Moscow city proper but NYC Metro area. If you do city proper for both, I think daily ridership as a percentage of city population would be closer to 72% for Moscow and 65% for NYC. Moscow still exceeds New York, but it's much closer. Thanks
Hmmm i do wish you would’ve compared it to other world-renowned transit systems, like Tokyo and Paris… and not New-York, which is not really known for having a “great” subway. I think you made a great case why its a great transit system for tourists, but you didn’t explain if it is faster, more convenient, and more reliable than other transit systems… things that citizens would care about. You did mention it is cheap and beautiful, which are definitely worthy points!
A little comparison: The London subway is not as beautiful as the Moscow one. London subway cars are low. Ventilation in the London subway is worse than in Moscow. London has a lot of unpleasant odors and dampness, in Russia the ventilation is better. London Underground cars are low, in Moscow they are spacious and high. Metro lobbies in Moscow are wide and spacious, like palaces, due to the additional tunnel in the middle! In England, the stations are narrow, as the British saved money on tunnels. Metro passages in Russia are wide and spacious, in England they are cramped. There is an abundance of advertising in the London metro, while in the Moscow metro there is almost no advertising. --- Of the minuses of the Moscow metro: not everywhere there are elevators (mostly at new stations). Few public toilets - traditionally toilets were made upstairs.
The deepest station in Russia is Admiralteyskaya, which is located in St. Petersburg - 86 meters deep. Escolator length - 137.4 meters. Travel time by escolator is exactly 4 minutes. In Moscow, the descent time in the metro takes about 1 minute if you stand. If you go down quickly, you will save 10-15 seconds))
actually there are some stations with bunkers built in the walls!! majority of them are stations built and opened in 1952, but not all of them have bunkers. if you look at the map they are on brown circle line and red line. they were built just in case someone decides to drop a nuclear bomb on Moscow or the ww3 happens.

Prices for regular riders are much lower btw. You talked only 'bout metro, but actually we had one of the longest (if not the longest) trolley buses system in the world in Moscow, but it was killed by city officials and replaced by much less effective electro buses in recent years. Also I can't understand your excitement about the convenience of the metro lines plan. It is good only for central trips but a nightmare if you need to ride between stations on neighboring lines far from center. You will need to go to center to change the lines. It will take you more than hour to move yourself by about 2km
Only a handful of Moscow metro stations are fancy... The rest are horrible and in winter has major issues.... Let alone over crowding during peak hours.
The title is a bit off. Metro in Moscow is glorious and comfortable, but not public transportation in general. The big problem of Moscow and whole Russia in general is incompetence of government at developing public services and streets that should be comfortable for pedestrians. Our governors don't develop cities for comfortable movement on foot because they're riding on their cars and don't see any of problems that we face everyday. Very few cities in Russia have somewhat of decent public transportation, and I swear you, if not the snow some cities even could be mistaken for African province because of horribly uncomfortable mini-buses that inundated cities because of their low-capacity compared to trolleybuses or trams. Still, Russian Metro is one of most, if not the most, beautiful and comfortable Metro systems.

All you have been raving about the entire video is Moscow’s metro, NOT its public transport system as a whole. 🙄 If we’re talking about the world’s best public transport system as a whole, nowhere in the world can beat the convenience, connectivity, modernity, comfort and (most of the time) reliability of Singapore’s public transport system, from its MRT, LRT and buses. Sure the MRT isn’t ornately decorated in its interiors like Moscow’s metro, but it is very modern, fully air conditioned and functional, yet not feeling utilitarian whatsoever. Most major MRT stations are built with Transit Oriented Development (TOD) in mind, hence the easy connection to most shopping malls, office buildings and HDBs. Singapore is also increasingly adding more cycle lanes to encourage cycling as a means of passengers’ first and last mile connection when taking public transport.

Coverage of the city, frequency of trains and low cost are definitely great, but the "beauty" of the stations is oversold. They're probably better than most other metro stations in the world but reality vs expectation falls short. The lighting is dull, the air is stale and the constantly arriving and departing trains are so loud that these aren't really places you want to hang around in for too long. Just a novelty you take in as you join the sea of people in a rush to get where they're going

The main form of public transportation in Tokyo is not the subway. JR and private railways running on the ground (Tobu, Seibu, Odakyu, Keio, Keiyo, Keikyu etc.). Tokyo may be the lowest in the world's major cities in the subway that occupies public transportation. Tokyo has become such an environment because public transportation has been developed for a long time.

90 seconds between metro trains might be amazing for folks from the USA, but it's pretty standard in many metro systems around the world. Paris, Tokyo, Seoul and many, many others. Even here in Santiago, Chile, you can see trains every minute on Line 1 in peak times.

Moscow metro is indeed a great example of how an efficient rapid transit system should be operated. It’s also actively expanding (something we miss so much in New York or Chicago) and it’s also being properly maintained thanks to nightly shutdowns (it’s a tradeoff, as the 24/7 service in New York is limiting the amount time available for maintenance). But then Moscow metro also has its downside: lack of wheelchair accessibility, particularly at the older, most beautiful stations at the center. Both New York and (especially!) Chicago are actively retrofitting their older stations for accessibility. In Moscow this kind of an effort is not being made that much. Though new stations are indeed accessible, older stations are not being retrofitted for that. Chances are that such retrofitting might not even be possible from engineering perspective. Note that accessibility helps not only wheelchair-bounded passengers but also healthy people with babies on strollers or with heavy luggage.
Nice Video! Curious why you used the population for Moscow city proper but NYC Metro area. If you do city proper for both, I think daily ridership as a percentage of city population would be closer to 72% for Moscow and 65% for NYC. Moscow still exceeds New York, but it's much closer. Thanks
Hmmm i do wish you would’ve compared it to other world-renowned transit systems, like Tokyo and Paris… and not New-York, which is not really known for having a “great” subway. I think you made a great case why its a great transit system for tourists, but you didn’t explain if it is faster, more convenient, and more reliable than other transit systems… things that citizens would care about. You did mention it is cheap and beautiful, which are definitely worthy points!
A little comparison:
The London subway is not as beautiful as the Moscow one. London subway cars are low.
Ventilation in the London subway is worse than in Moscow.
London has a lot of unpleasant odors and dampness, in Russia the ventilation is better.
London Underground cars are low, in Moscow they are spacious and high.
Metro lobbies in Moscow are wide and spacious, like palaces, due to the additional tunnel in the middle! In England, the stations are narrow, as the British saved money on tunnels.
Metro passages in Russia are wide and spacious, in England they are cramped.
There is an abundance of advertising in the London metro, while in the Moscow metro there is almost no advertising.

Of the minuses of the Moscow metro: not everywhere there are elevators (mostly at new stations). Few public toilets - traditionally toilets were made upstairs.
It takes 1.5 minutes max to wait for the next train but 1 hour to go down the tunnel.
The deepest station in Russia is Admiralteyskaya, which is located in St. Petersburg - 86 meters deep. Escolator length - 137.4 meters. Travel time by escolator is exactly 4 minutes.
In Moscow, the descent time in the metro takes about 1 minute if you stand. If you go down quickly, you will save 10-15 seconds))

actually there are some stations with bunkers built in the walls!! majority of them are stations built and opened in 1952, but not all of them have bunkers. if you look at the map they are on brown circle line and red line. they were built just in case someone decides to drop a nuclear bomb on Moscow or the ww3 happens.
Unfortunately Moscow is a city in which Russia tries to be very tourist friendly, the Russian countryside is a story of failure in terms of the public facilities, economic and social situation. Moscow's pretty, but only because it is the capital. Just as unequal as russian social situation at the moment :(

Once again, the whole month of unlimited commuting in Moscow and several suburban areas for 33 bucks

You talked only 'bout metro, but actually we had one of the longest (if not the longest) trolley buses system in the world in Moscow, but it was killed by city officials and replaced by much less effective electro buses in recent years. Also I can't understand your excitement about the convenience of the metro lines plan. It is good only for central trips but a nightmare if you need to ride between stations on neighboring lines far from center. You will need to go to center to change the lines. It will take you more than hour to move yourself by about 2km

The title is a bit off.
Metro in Moscow is glorious and comfortable, but not public transportation in general. The big problem of Moscow and whole Russia in general is incompetence of government at developing public services and streets that should be comfortable for pedestrians. Our governors don't develop cities for comfortable movement on foot because they're riding on their cars and don't see any of problems that we face everyday. Very few cities in Russia have somewhat of decent public transportation, and I swear you, if not the snow some cities even could be mistaken for African province because of horribly uncomfortable mini-buses that inundated cities because of their low-capacity compared to trolleybuses or trams.
Still, Russian Metro is one of most, if not the most, beautiful and comfortable Metro systems.

This title of this video needs to be changed. All you have been raving about the entire video is Moscow’s metro, NOT its public transport system as a whole. 🙄 If we’re talking about the world’s best public transport system as a whole, nowhere in the world can beat the convenience, connectivity, modernity, comfort and (most of the time) reliability of Singapore’s public transport system, from its MRT, LRT and buses. Sure the MRT isn’t ornately decorated in its interiors like Moscow’s metro, but it is very modern, fully air conditioned and functional, yet not feeling utilitarian whatsoever. Most major MRT stations are built with Transit Oriented Development (TOD) in mind, hence the easy connection to most shopping malls, office buildings and HDBs. Singapore is also increasingly adding more cycle lanes to encourage cycling as a means of passengers’ first and last mile connection when taking public transport.
Honestly I wouldnt say signapores system is any better than the ones in Amsterdam, Vienna, Hong Kong, Paris or Tokyo.

While the metro system is great, it is poorly managed. For a long time barely any new stations were built, now they are, but the planning is poor,placing inappropriate, and they look plain ugly.
Also last year the mayor got rid of all the trolley buses, destroyed their network, and now is doing similar thing to trams.
Also bicycle infrastructure is non existant and travelling on foot in the city centre is torture because all the roads are very wide and have few crossing, most of them underground.

Насчёт пешеходной инфраструктуры я с вами крайне не согласен. На пешеходов в Москве плевали с высокой колокольни, это можно понять по тому, сколько денег тратят на расширение дорог, строительство новых парковок и развязок в городе, а вместо велоинфраструктуры у нас в лучшем случае просто краской на тротуаре рисуют жёлтую линию. Конечно, есть исключения, есть комфортные улицы, но в целом ситуация для пешеходов недружелюбная и тенденций на улучшение нет. И такая ситуация по всей стране с редчайшими исключениями. Вы знаете английский, значит и должны представлять, если критически оцениваете ситуацию, что Россия в плане пешеходной инфраструктуры и общественного транспорта не лучшая.

Guangzhou metro stations are completely devoid of aesthetics! This is transport for the industrial zone, not for the city!
Coverage of the city, frequency of trains and low cost are definitely great, but the "beauty" of the stations is oversold. They're probably better than most other metro stations in the world but reality vs expectation falls short. The lighting is dull, the air is stale and the constantly arriving and departing trains are so loud that these aren't really places you want to hang around in for too long. Just a novelty you take in as you join the sea of people in a rush to get where they're going

The main issue of Russian metro is surveillance and security theater. A lot of cops just checking every suspicious person and some times they drop drugs into your bagpack or documents.
Also, don't compare price of a ticket in NYC and Moscow. People earn differently in two places.
But I agree, it's good enough. Better than in a lot of places.

For example it was a nightmare even for me to travel with my suitcase in London within a historical center and there were no lifts there, only stairs. Just check the London's metro map how many stations are equipped for disabled people?

The main form of public transportation in Tokyo is not the subway.
JR and private railways running on the ground (Tobu, Seibu, Odakyu, Keio, Keiyo, Keikyu etc.).
Tokyo may be the lowest in the world's major cities in the subway that occupies public transportation.
Tokyo has become such an environment because public transportation has been developed for a long time.
I would like to add that there's free wifi in the metro 🚇
and mobile internet works great!
