I just found your channel and I am SO excited to watch your journey! Although my Camino is over 3 years away, I'm already preparing for it. This video is an excellent resource -- thank you so much for taking the time to vlog your journey before, during, and after! Oh and I too suffer from knee and heel problems and motion sickness, so I'm eager to see how all of that played out for you and how you managed along the way.

So glad you mentioned the insoles and such for your shoes. I suffer from the same thing w/the fat pad atrophy & heel pain. My chiro says I don’t have plantar fasciitis, but I do find that solutions for PF works for me. I am projecting to go on the camino in fall 2021 if COVID cooperates. I have never tried taping my heel. So appreciate this video!

So glad you got some information from the video! FYI, my heel, surprisingly, caused me no grief during the entire 38 days and it no longer hurts! I'm planning to do my camino in 2022 and have been somewhat obsessed with watching as many videos as I can and taking down notes about lessons learned, things to bring/not bring, etc. FYI, I've heard about people taking photos of book pages in order to avoid bringing the whole book and adding more weight. 😊 Oh, and thanks for the info/tips about your footwear and insoles --- I have plantar fasciitis too! Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words!! I’m so excited for your journey! 😃 I got my scarf from a local thrift store, but what I like about it is that it’s square (easy to use as a “towel” or privacy screen in albergues) and that it was a lightweight silk/wool blend (kept my neck warm on all those chilly and windy days). Just be sure not to stick it in the dryer like I accidentally did lol! Happy planning and Buen Camino!! 👣

Hi Rachelle - Yes! you're the first person I've seen take a fan on the Camino. And, I've watched many gear lists! Not to say that there aren't people who would love to have had one - but just couldn't be bothered to carry it! And, very curious - how much of this gear did you later mail back home or discard? When I first saw the mountain of stuff in front of you - I couldn't believe it. Good on you if you carried all of that 800kms! I don't think I could.

Haha, doubt I’m a trendsetter! 😂 I carried everything you saw (did not take the nano puff, as mentioned), plus I bought a heavier fleece. I absolutely love my Altras and I actually had heel pain before starting my Camino (because of other shoes). They are now my favorite shoe and won’t wear another brand, lol. BUT zero drops take some time getting used to, especially if you’re used to wearing traditional athletic shoes with a higher drop (heel is higher than toe). There’s no one perfect shoe for every single person because we all have different feet, but if you want to give them another try, expect to take some time getting used to. There’s a lot of info here on TH-cam, as well. Good luck finding your perfect shoe!

Thank you, Rachael. This was very, very useful and am thankful that I am a guy; so a few of your girl things will not be in my bag. I loved your "meaningful" stone of burdens that you are going to lay at the foot of the cross and your weapon of protection, your rosary. I am a Catholic Christian too. Now that you've completed your Camino, could you let me know some of your post Camino thoughts and feelings. Thanks and God bless. The times are still uncertain with the virus. It is Sept.1, 2020. What do you think ? Please say a prayer and let me know. To go in spite of the uncertainty in the 3rd week of this month, or should I wait for more certainty to maybe April / May 2021 ? I will be looking forward to your advice. Thanks. Patrick

The Turbie Twist was perfect! And I while it seems like a lot of stuff, I didn’t feel the weight after the first week and I used about 98% of it. I will pack exactly the same for the next one if I travel at the same time. 😊👍👣

So you were able to carry everything on the plane without having to check your pack? I looked up the dimensions of the pack and it exceeded the allowable dimensions for a carry-on, but I guess you can squish it to fit? Hoping that's the case... I would rather not have to check a bag.

No problems whatsoever. I took Norwegian Airlines and only did carry on-which is why I bought my trekking poles in St. Jean. I did tighten everything down and I had my crossbody to hold some things. You can also wear some of the bulkier clothing items on board to help, if needed. 👍

Can I ask the brand of your puffy vest? I was going to take my puffy coat, but maybe will switch to a vest, I love the color of yours.

Thank you! I got it at Costco last Fall for $15. It’s by 32 Degrees Heat. It’s not down, but proved very useful during my trip to keep my core warm.

Thank you so much for your fantastic videos!! I was wondering how well your sleeping bag liner worked for you? After your Camino, do you think you prefer it over a sleeping bag. What was the experience of other pilgrims with their sleeping gear? I am concerned about extra weight.

Thanks so much for watching! I can’t speak about other pilgrims’ experiences, but I can tell you that the liner and down blanket was extremely versatile for both the hot nights in September and the cold ones in October. If traveling during the same time, I would do it (and my whole gear list, actually) exactly the same way. 👍

Hello Rachelle, thanks a million for your super helpful videos. I am watching one at a time. I saw that you also have a slight hallux valgus. And i tried to get the name of the shoes you did wear. I am always afraid that it will start to get painful after a few hours but your feet looked ok in most videos. Would you mind sharing the brand and model and also whether you think they were a good buy or not? Thanks a lot!!!

Thank you so much for watching! I am wearing Altra Lone Peak 4.0 on my Camino. They have an updated version that I have not yet tried, but I love Altra for my feet as they have very wide toe box for wiggle room! I would definitely wear them again and they are my go-to for all my local hikes here at home. Be well and Buen Camino!
