    My experience with the Lyngdorf where it can rival tube preamp + ss amp setup in terms of everything. The most incredible part is that it has room correction. Apparently, I think even mcintosh uses the same technology. Someone point out that The Lyngdorfs aren't Class D, they are Direct Digital. I have not validate this yet but please read up on it.

    I own a TDAI 3400 amp for two years now, driving my Harbeth Super HL5+XD.
    I am very sorry if i hurt anybodys feelings, and everyone has the right to own opinions. Here is mine: When you are ready to listen to, and enjoy music more than electronics, and spending thousand of Dollars for decades, you by a Lyngdorf, and let Roomperfect do it's trick. After all your room is the part equation, that influences the sound the most. Much more than the gear itself 😉 Roomperfect is 'magic dust' in a box!

      I have paired to two Metas and two KC62's, in my case RoomPerfect didn't do the trick, simply add more bass weight instead of reduce it. It's ok for acoustic stuff but for complex (and bad recording) stuff I prefer bypass.

    The Lyngdorf room correction DSP is simply amazing and will integrate dual subwoofers with any mini-monitor seamlessly. So not only do you eliminate cord clutter and multiple electronics but can reduce your room treatment to only diffusion panels without worrying about absorption!

    Great review as always Thomas, I really enjoy all your reviews. I have just got the TDAI-3400 and think it's great, I was going to get the SDA-2400 Lyngdord Poweramp also, but was told that I didn't need it as it's only 200w into 8ohms the same as the TDAI-3400 and my speakers are easy to drive, full range custom built reference floor standers from Adelaide Speakers. It really changed the sound and filled the mids in beautifully, beefed it up and I wonder if it sounds like tubes (but I've never heard tubes so not sure) all I know is it sounds incredible and like I'm immersed in the music, I added 2 x REL S/812 subs and all I can say is WOW... Wow, wow, wow opens the last part of the sound stage and sounds are like their coming from the RELS, but I walk up to them and nope, they're definitely coming from the speakers and RELS are just adding that low end air for the soundstage and bringing out sounds and sparkle in the mains so that they simply sparkle, so much so I'm thinking of making a line array of 6 REL S/812 with the mains... I'm not too worried about the Lyngdorf losing value, I'm NEVER selling it 🙂... Thank you for this review, because before I purchased my TDAI-3400 it was this review you did that really helped me to decide, you do great work mate 🙂

    There is no debate whether one is better than the other. It just depends on the synergy of your system and what kind of speakers you have and cabling all play a part in which set up sounds better. These debates have been going on since the beginning of this hobby it’s time to end them. They are both excellent formats and it’s up to the hobbyist to decide which one they prefer.

    • @sc51153826
      @sc51153826 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      you mentioned that it made the system sounded good or better but "different". My experience/understanding is it takes a lot of DSP power to correctly process all the parameters given the sampling was done properly and nothing inside the room had changed since. All that DSP or algorithms will probably add a sonic signature or have some kind of limitations to the sound correction. obviously, there may be more factors involved, but these 2 are just what I'm familiar with off the top of my head. Sound signature will depend on the designer preference on which areas of room corrections he/she prioritize to address and, how he/she address them. Limitations, what if the acoustics of the room falls out of the parameters of the tuning capabilities? Room correction is dynamic much like the active noise cancelling systems in headphones. If I can hear the artefacts in the headphones. maybe?

      Yeah good question, my friend told me for this one, he had to place the mic in multiple location and eventually, he got a % reading.(maybe it meant % compare to lab recording) My other friend read up on it and explained to me how they compared their reference track played at the person's place and adjust the sound to match how it sounded at the lab.....something like that, read up on it, apparently it's interesting.

    You can also get the lyngdorf tdai 2170 witch is much cheaper! I have that one and it performs very well. I do like the Room Perfect, its one of the better room corrections, but its not perfect. One issue i have with the tdai 2170 is that you cant choose to only do room correction in the bass frequencies, witch you can with the tdai 3400. I find that doing the room correction in all frequencies can damage the midrange and make it a bit thin. But the bass is in most room grandly improved! BTW. I own the same setup. And while I am also curious about the difference 3400 would make, I am already over the moon with 1120. I was worried that 1120 might be not enough power for KEF R3 Metas but after once accidentally going full volume and nearly blewing up half a building, I've changed my mind. There is enough power in this little box. Likely 3400 is still an improvement sound wise but here in UK it is extra £3k over 1120. I doubt it is £3k better differnce in sound. So my advice is: forget 3400 and enjoy your current setup as it is already capable producing an amazing sound.

    This Lyngdorf piece could very well be an exception, but IME, class D always reveals its warts over extended periods - it's sneaky - the type of situation where a couple months would pass and i'd realize I lost the urge to listen. However, in a short A/B comparison, class D performs all the audiophile trickery.

    I have listen to consumer grade high end SS amps and compared them to pro-audio amps and to be honest with you I really don't hear any differences, in some cases I find the pro audio amps sounding better to me. I ended up going with a pair of SS pro-audio Crown XLS 2502 power amps bridged producing 1500W each used as mono-blocks for my left and right speakers. They can drive any speaker load and are dead quiet and never get hot nor do the fans ever kick in when running my system. Do they look as cool as consumer end probably not but I am more about function than aesthetics. I will be building a rack box for them to dress them up a bit. Total investment $1100 for the pair. I would put them up against any consumer grade amp for performance. I am sure with insanely expensive high end speakers maybe one can find subtle differences but for me they work great and I have more headroom for my system then ever before. As per tube power that I have not compared yet. There is much discussion that tubes produce a unique sound for stereo systems and that maybe so. PS Audio Paul McGowan claims that the only place for tubes in a power amp is on the input side of the amp which is how he builds his BKH amps. Then again extremely expensive.

Essentially it manipulates A.C. audio signals in a non conventional way, so solid state sounds "Tuby" and "Tuby" sounds extra "Tuby" but removes the unwanted distortions and adds more dampening power. A tube is like a DSP except a tube can only cause a fixed manipulation of the signal. Why not just use a DSP and you have the benefit of a flexible solution where the effect can be changed. Is there some sort of magic I missed? No, I don’t think so. But agree, tubes look more beautiful.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know enough to comment but my impression is DSP changes the curve so it is more 'flat' while tubes don't do it. Have to read up on it when I am ready to add DSP into my system.

    • @ThinkingBetter
      @ThinkingBetter 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it's not a magic thing at all. The soft clipping of tube amps is possible to achieve also with transistor amps but requires some special circuitry added. Ages ago I bought a NAD3020 that became super popular because it had such circuit in it. I even ended up using it with my Stax headphones at some point. But a DSP can do it more precisely and be optimized to better than tube characteristics. Perhaps hard to imagine, but a SHARC Analog Devices DSP (or other such audio DSPs) can make better than tube sound. Tubes do nothing a high quality audio DSP can't do, but obviously DSPs work in the digital domain of audio; thus ideally any tube emulation should be prior to the DAC where the signal doesn't get hurt by additional ADC/DAC conversions. Perhaps a product I should make. Some information about soft clipping: sound.whsites.net/articles/soft-clip.htm

(Not fully tube setup) Have to try to know if it is for you or not. I also have subscribers who are fully tube decide to make the change after they borrowed my solid-state amp. They realized a mix is a good idea too.

      @@ThomasAndStereo Problem is I do not like tube bass, no matter the tube.

      I am with you. THat is why I use tubes only in my preamp section. For my power section, always solid state.

    I highly doubt this guy knows what he is talking about. People take time in wanting to experience change in audio. It is not something that happens over night, it takes months. Anyone with basic experience will know this feeling unless you've been making really crappy systems that isn't for you.

      Welcome to my channel. Just keep in mind my channel is not a review channel in the traditional sense but rather my journey as an audiophile where I share what I learn. So there will be some video where I just get something to try for a short period and some I live with for a while. I am transparent about it and my goal is just to bring a bunch of audiophile together to 'hang out'. For this video, there were 4 of us and one of us owned the Lyngdorf so his input was valuable.

      @@ThomasAndStereo That had nothing to do with my comment at all.

      Sometimes the sonic novelties of new gear can bias one's impressions, but I also find that with time the person acclimates to the sound even though it may suck e.g. HD800
