It's been a while since I've done a voice acting video for something I'm not in, but I just liked this game too much I couldn't help it! I know this isn't like the usual uploads, but I wanted to give y'all a little Halloween video. Hope you like it!
Oh. Oh that's THEIR VOICES. YES. I will never be able to imagine them sounding any different. It's them to me... so good... Post game, it's one of the most heartbreaking scenes... He failed to see it and it was their undoing...
@@mayhem_marsso basically (from my own interpretations of this scene) i view it as a double entendre - but in this case, @huh6634 just means that in the case of Anya’s SA by Jimmy (which is heavily implied throughout the game- the more notable segment being the mutated polle emerging from what can be interpreted as a womb and the consistent horse symbolism in general as jimmy alluded to being ‘sexually attracted to cartoon horses’.. of course there’s way more than just this, like the scene where anya is storing the gun case away, but still). the ‘dead pixel’ is in reference to the situation with jimmy essentially- and how curly overlooked the entire situation, as, alternatively - curly is the type of pushover/overachiever that is planning ahead. he’s ’too busy to see the smaller bits’ and is stuck ‘looking at the overall picture’ as he intends on swapping careers, and wants his current occupation- inevitably - to be a good rep for him, essentially. however, in this one dimensional mindset, Curly attempts being, well, buddy-buddy with ‘everyone’, however, if you want to be friends with ‘everyone’, you’re setting yourself up for failure - as he tries and lets himself be swayed by jimmy. if you want to be friends with the victim, you can’t be friends with their abuser, their tormentor. my own personal headcanons on this (as shown by in game dialogue and q&a’s), is that curly most likely got jimmy into the program in the first place. jimmy was never well-faceted - as alluded when they were talking about their time in training camp - and the only reason why he’s on the tulpar is because curly was insistent; he wanted him to be something greater, to have a chance at something so profound. yet in doing so, he constantly finds himself being manipulated by jimmy- especially as jimmy projects his own insecurities onto curly (i.e. his psych evaluations and the curly birthday scene) since he’s a conniving narcissist. i would say curlys ‘want’ to maximize everyone’s effort and constantly cover up the teams true nature (like lying on his own psych evaluations to look good, and doing jimmy’s psych evaluation so that their team doesn’t get dinged) is what ultimately leads to his downfall. yes, he can cover up the more tangible, proverbial, minute aspects - he can quickly free daisuke from foam with an axe, he can lie on his psych evaluations, he can constantly say white lies about how he will ‘get to’ something - but the second that anya’s situation stares him right in the face, he doesn’t act. i mean not only is this how r**pe culture perpetuated in society by men in general - as even though the signs and implications that anya laid out were already there (i.e. she discusses this in the scene where she’s hiding in the cockpit), curly never had the hindsight to look into it. i believe part of that was with his slight obsession to ‘fix’ jimmy as a means of , again, making his time at the tulpar look pristine on documented paper. he was so blinded that he couldn’t fathom his childhood friend being a rapist - and by the time it was too late, he panics. this whole situation isn’t something he can just sweep underneath a rug. (thus allowing himself to be swayed by jimmy momentarily, as jimmy attempts to take curly down a peg with him. again, jimmy is a conniving narcissist.) essentially, the dead pixel scene can be interpreted in two ways - both intrinsically tied to one another, though; one of which is how the ‘dead pixel’ would be Curly overlooking Anya’s SA (the key takeaway being her dialogue where she mentions ‘in the back of my mind, it’s always there’); and just in general, how Curly strives as an overachiever and look towards his own future - an entirely separate ladder to climb - at the detriment of those around him; as his compulsive behavior makes him overlook a case that inadvertently leads to his downfall.
!!SPOILERS FOR MOUTHWASHING!! This scene hits me every time because the reality is that Jimmy is the dead pixel and he's always there to haunt Anya even when he's not present. But at this time, for Curly, he's unable to see Jimmy for what he is: the dead pixel that ruins the big picture. Curly was a good guy but that doesn't change the fact he failed Anya. But we know he would do anything to go back and change that. Unfortunately, all he can do is watch in agony as everything falls apart around him because of his lapse in judgement.
Additionally, I've heard the dead pixel represents the "one mistake" that Jimmy believes was what caused his downfall, when in reality he is refusing *take responsibility* of how he is the biggest problem on the ship
I also like the reading of the "cockpit" phrase as a foreshadowing how, in the end, even locks did not stop Jimmy from fucking the whole shit up as a little, hair as dirt, bitch it is.
i hadn't even thought about curly's comment about looking at the bigger picture. all his concern is about diplomacy and not rocking the boat; his care is towards the environment and wellbeing of everyone, but not in specifics. he cannot fully concern himself with protecting anya because if he does anything punitive, he will upset jimmy, and that could risk the environment turning bad. he's not going to concern himself with fixing that dark pixel. to him, it's not a problem.
Curly was a well intentioned but weak willed man. He was concerned for Anya, but also thought he could somehow talk it out even though Jimmy showed little to no remorse when he talked to him, and just let him walk off to "correct" the ship.
This scene was so beautifully tragic upon my first watch. As someone who has experienced SA, the moment she brought up the locks for the medical wing but not for the sleeping quarters, my heart dropped and I immediately felt myself get teary eyed. This game did a beautiful job showing what a victim of SA is. They didn't make a spectacle out of it, didn't show it for shock value. They showed the truth that many SA victims need in order to receive the justice they deserve. They need someone to read between the lines. Although Curly already knows what happened, we the audience, can easily miss these very key details as I've seen on numerous playthroughs from content creators that show Anya's experience as we never hear it from her. Not a lot of people picked up on the fact Jimmy knew how to make a spiked cocktail when they were trying to knock out Swansea. Confident the person who drinks it will pass out and "wake up and may not even know what happened". Anya was put down, shamed, belittled, and violated. The person who should have handled it, Curly, sympathized with the assaulter and thought he could "fix it" We will never know if Anya meant to just abort the baby or meant to end her own life. Either way, I think she accepted whatever outcome came about it. Her story is a tragic one and her as a character will forever hold a place in my heart.
The detail about the spiked cocktail was a nice catch. I really like that it's never spelled out, we don't get an unnecessarily graphic scene showing us the act - we just see the aftermath and the absolute damage it causes, which feels very realistic to me. This is one of those rare instances where SA is handled properly in a narrative because it's not just thrown in as an afterthought, it's literally the whole point.
*Why do you think Pony Express put a lock on the medical room but not in the sleeping quarters?* Every replay of this game makes me want to punch my wall.
Everything about this is so PEAK the radio filter on their voices, how natural it sounds, I'm gonna be thinking about this for weeks (also I know it's weirdly specific, but the whispery echo on the "SAFETY" portion at the very end is somehow exactly how I read the white text in my head in-game, almost like audible intrusive thoughts...all around excellently done)
I *love* your guys’ take on Curly and Anya!! This scene dubbed highkey hurts me in a slightly different way compared to the way me just reading the text mentally did,, y’all did so well!! :,D
I don't know a single thing about this game, but I've been drip-fed so much content about it on social media that I feel like I'm missing out on something DEVASTATING (in a good way). And despite having no prior context, this video is so gorgeous(?) that I think it's single-handedly forcing my hand to actually play the damned game.
Never thought a game named Mouthwashing would leave such an impact, me and my friends can't stop replaying/talking about it so seeing this voiceover of it really made me excited!!! Great job capturing their feelings Aleks!!!
my heart literally sank playing this game for a second time after finding out about what happened to Anya. This is literally a I have No Mouth and I Must Scream situation but somehow even more horrific
I love the static-y quality of the voices, like you're listening to them through an old tape recorder. It works so well. I feel like both of you deliver the lines in a way that kind of shows the basic surface-level of the conversation, but also the hidden weight behind them.
the voices rlly fit the mood of the scene so MUCH idk how else to describe it, they’re so soft spoken but it may just be the filter, but still this is amazing
I don't know much about voice acting, so this is probably very unrealistic of a thing to do, but wow I would love a full version of something like this for Mouthwashing. This was incredible and helped me see this scene in a whole new light. You both did an incredible job, I'll picture these voices for the characters from now on for sure!
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH. This scene stands by its own right and being able to listen to the weight behind the voice of both Anya and Curly… Phenomenal work.
I recently had a dream about a voice acted Mouthwashing, and this was the exact voices I have imagined for Curly and Anya. Thank you so much for compiling this and thank the VA's for doing such an amazing job with the script
I swear to god Mouthwashing has so much potential for a movie scenario for real The dialogues, the twist, the storytelling, the characters, the music,...etc !! Everything is perfect and cinematic to me !
It's more fitting for an animated miniseries to me. The premise itself can work well in live action movie but the artstyle and aesthetics are fundamental to the experience and I can only see it being done animated.
Amazing job Aleks and Suzie!! I find it cool you guys decided to voice this particular moment. It's a bittersweet scene, and you guys did an excellent job at portraying the emotions the characters were experiencing ♡
Man, it's insane how well this conversation compacts the core of their stories so well. Curly is a victim turned enabler. A man with a manipulative, selfish, cruel 'friend' who he has, unintentionally, created a safe space for where he can abuse people as he likes. Because he knows he has Curly to minimize the damage. Curly always wants to give Jimmy chances. Landing him the job, fudging his psych evaluation, giving him the 'opportunity' to take some responsibility for his inhumane crime. All while blissfully ignorant of what Anya's going through, despite the clear signs to anyone whose gone through similar or anyone whose worked with abuse victims. He doesn't even fully understand her pain once he learns what happened to her. He probably never will. Saying he'll do 'anything' to protect her while he's still willing to sweep it under the rug as much as possible so Jimmy's life isn't 'ruined'. It's only when Jimmy's behavior LITERALLY blows up in his face does he realize that Jimmy just... sucks. Curly's really not a great person, but he's absolutely not an irredeemable creep like Jimmy. Meanwhile, Anya feels completely unprotected and vulnerable. She's pregnant with a fetus that was forced onto her. Her crew are all men she's afraid won't understand or care, a much too common experience for sexual assault victims. And something that more or less proves true with Curly's reaction. She's trapped on this ship long enough to where she WILL have to give birth, unless she miscarries. Or if she performs an unsafe 'at home' abortion, likely maiming or dying herself in the process. Another 8 months in a metal box where her assaulter can walk into her bedroom at any point and abuse her again. The dead pixel, the fetus that's always there in the back of her mind. All leading up to Anya overdosing, a death and abortion in one fell swoop. And Curly, disfigured and bed bound from Jimmy's insanely selfish decision, completely helpless to stop her. Thinking what could Anya have done in life, if he didn't give someone like Jimmy so many chances. Maybe she finally could've gotten into medical school.
i periodically come back to this because the voices are so spot on… curly’s general attempts at being encouraging, but not quite succeeding… and also something about anya’s slight lisp really feels accurate!!!! please know i’ve watched this at least 20 times because it’s just that good
the delivery from both of you is PERFECT! you breathe so much character into the scene! it's one that carries heavy and incredible subtext during a conversation that is seemingly so simple. your performances manage to capture both characters' perspectives so clearly. the small way anya in which anya cuts curly off at 8 months and how her voice slightly trails off in hidden pain at the end of THE question. curly's softness but impeccable blindness... it is such a complex scene but you really managed to nail it! incredible incredible job!!
curly is a good person, but his one flaw is this. he didn’t notice what anya was saying because he’s so focused on the bigger picture. but “in the back of her mind, it’s always there.”
I just finished SIGNALIS and loved it and a lot of the people in that community talk about this game so I’ll definitely be playing it soon and coming back to this video (also play SIGNALIS)
This is incredibly good. Perfect voices, perfect performance, perfect tone. I couldn’t ask for anything better. Brilliantly done! Thanks so much for making this.
I think the parallel between Curly and Anya bridge between their perception on Jimmy. Anya has the capability of seeing the dead pixel in the nighttime screen, and Curly cannot - He chooses to be blind to the reality of his friend’s nature, and idealizes what could be rather than what is.
I just randomly came across this title last night and watched a 2 hr walk through. This scene was so touching and eerie, you guys really wonderfully captured both vibes. GOATED performance (and ever two of my favorite VAs)
Already came back to this video four times today. There’s a beautiful serenity to the voices that adds so much to the atmosphere, and I gotta say, you both are incredible as Curly and Anya. Thank you so much for showing this game some love 💕
BRO I didn't even know you did this til I saw folks mentioning it on the one Quills had me dub with her so I came to check it out. WOW! SO good, you both sound fuckin perfect, awesome work, love that you still make time for fan stuff. Aleks Le is #1 💖
Man, this is exactly how I imagined their voices sounding like. It's uncanny almost; like you reached into my brain and pulled out the exact voices I imagined them having. Never mind me as I replay this for the fifth time-
I rarely ever leave comments on TH-cam, but good God, that was good. Really good. Everything about this was just perfect. Thank you for doing this and for sharing it, now this scene can destroy us all over again in even more ways! Cheers!
If you can, please keep in mind that English isn’t my first language, but I was blown away by your performance-both of you. I’ve watched other fan dubs, and this is hands down THE best one I’ve heard so far. The way you brought out the characters’ emotions and nailed the interpretation was so good I wish it had been used for the whole game. I was almost in tears. And that dead pixel at the end? Such a cool detail. Amazing job!
i absolutely adore this dub. Literally ever since i first heard it, i cannot unhear your voice when thinking about Curly - to me, it IS his voice. It fits him perfectly imo.
It's been a while since I've done a voice acting video for something I'm not in, but I just liked this game too much I couldn't help it! I know this isn't like the usual uploads, but I wanted to give y'all a little Halloween video. Hope you like it!

Sounds amazing as always keep up the good work my man
This is like the BEST Halloween vid you could've ever uploaded, you're the best voice actor Aleks !
In ur opinion how does it feel.... Listening to this voice reminds me of Jinwo sung 😅
This is great lol
When Anya asked about the locks, I shed a tear 😭😭
Im so sorry for going off topic why do i see you like almost everywhere
the instant realisation is heart wrenching
Anya's voice has a hint of Shelley Duvall's inflection in it
YESS!! The second i saw her i thought of Shelley Duvall
And neither deserved what they went through. 🥲
Yeah!!! Shelley was the inspiration for her appearance!

Curly’s biggest flaw was that he was too soft on Jimmy. He knew he wasn’t good yet tried to see the good in him. As for Jimmy, he can rot in hell

Man I’d love to see a full fan dub of this with you guys, this game’s amazing
Extremely clever idea to have the audio sound like speaking over a radio or through a phone, it really fits the look and feel of the game
I love the low fidelity effects on the voices!!!!!
A full playthrough with these voices would be peak!
It’s perfect
The captain has let us down..he let them sink into the abyss
You two absolutely nailed this scene. I’m really glad this game is getting the attention it deserves
Aleks Le is #1 💖
If there was ever an official voice cast/eng dub, I would pick these two. Definitely my favorite take on this scene.
Man, this is exactly how I imagined their voices sounding like. It's uncanny almost; like you reached into my brain and pulled out the exact voices I imagined them having. Never mind me as I replay this for the fifth time-
Oh my god you two match them so well!! I literally cannot stop thinking/talking about this game.
Thank you for making this, it’s perfect ❤
I would be so happy if creators saw this fantastic work you've done!
These voices are so perfect! The emotion in both performances from each actor is fantastic!
THIS IS AN AMAZING VOICE IMPRESSION FOR THEM!! I love this so much this is so perfect, props to all the VAs!!
Not gonna lie I’ve never seen this before, but I love the voice acting from the both of you!
This lives rent free in my head now, thanks. This has imprinted in my head as their canon voices, thank you for sharing this with us.
god this voiceacting is so natural its beautiful. smth to aspire to
Luke from streets should take Jimmy down to Memphis. Preferably VERY painfully.
Also your curly is pretty cool too
This really digs deep. The game is haunting, and you and Suzie Yeung's work really amplifies that. Thank you for sharing this with us 🌻
Quite unexpected but a very well done job on both your parts.
i absolutely adore this dub. Literally ever since i first heard it, i cannot unhear your voice when thinking about Curly - to me, it IS his voice. It fits him perfectly imo.
ohhh this was so good. I've been positively obsessed with this game since I first heard about it and your voices elevated this scene even more !
ALEKS THIS IS SO PEAKKK OHMGGG
Ok but like….a full voice acting of the whole game would rock. You both fit these characters so well
YOUR VOICES FIT SO WELL! I LOVE THE WAY THE AUDIO SOUNDS!
SOBBING! Now I need the whole game voice by you two
God...poor Anya. Cheers to both of y'all for doing such a subtle, yet powerful scene justice.
This is their voice in my dang miiiindddddd aaaaaaaaaa. thank youuuu
genuinely added a really heartwrenching depth to the situation.

That gave me chills! This is amazing and I feel like you caught the tones so perfectly ♥
I haven’t been able to imagine them sounding any different after this video, this is the the best version of this scene.
Beautifully haunting… Can’t help but find this eerily beautiful.
