We all know how freely Mark gives of his time & talent to help us out with reviews, lessons, and keeping us entertained with his videos. His new product, the Rok Lok strap lock is fantastic! Let me say here that I am not a personal friend of Marks, nor do I work for any business he is associated with. The Rok Lok installs easily on your strap, and makes it really easy to attach/un attach to your guitars. I tried it on my Zager & Ovation acoustics, and an old electric guitar with Dunlap Straplocks on it. The Rok Lok fit easily on all of them. I think we all owe it to Mark to pick up a set or 2 for all your straps. I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the Rok Lok t-shirts! Thank you Mark!
I totally agree with your statement on Mark's RokLok . I have 4 of them so I can use various colored straps to match whatever Guitar am I am playing . I really want to give the twelve string a go now. Thank you for being so very thorough in your lessons and explanations.
Hey Arland I have been playing 12 strings for about 40 years. Give it a go for sure. My advice is make sure you have a 12 that has good string spacing. For Example my Rickenbacker 360/12 has a very narrow neck and is hard to play cleanly. My Eastwood and Danelectro are very easy to play. Almost as easy as a 6 string. Good luck on your future 12 string playing
I have played a 12 for as long as I have played, >50 years. It adds some challenge as well as a whole new voice and will further harden your fingers. Well worth doing. @@ratwynd Same here, it was called a Ranger Xii by EKO. bought it in 68, it was as easy to play as a 6 string. Lost it 6 years ago in the Ca. wildfires.
Great review. Got what needed to be said without getting too deep in the weeds. Starting to lean back to the reverend as I’m more on the side of looking for the ric tone at a more affordable price.
I bought a Reverend at your recommendation. It is awesome. Demo so about twice the price of a Danelectro, and I like it twelve times as much. I think pickup type may make a huge part of that difference. These pickups on a solid body make a different sound again. Very nice.

To bad you didn't know Don Felder who is the main guy for the song Hotel California, and got his permission to play it. Then you could tell Don Henley to Beat it ! Another great review Mark !
Henley called the shots and ran the show. Felder was a very unappreciated hired hand in Henley's eyes. He would have absolutely no say in this from what I understand.
yes, if he had played Hotel California, written by Felder, Frey, and Henly, but... he played life in the fast lane, which was written by Walsh, Henley, and Fry. As Joe tells the origin story, the main riff was a catchy Walsh warm up riff that they fleshed out to be a song.
Great video - nice presentation of what seems to be a pretty cool guitar (for the money!). Great work as always Mark, thanks as always for detailed reviewing and some great playing. 😎
I don't know how the prices line up compared to the other guitars you have, but really... you've made me a fan of that Reverend 12, although from today's video I may look into the Harley Benton. Really liked the sound this made I've been looking for an eclectic 12 that falls out of the usual 12 string sound. I particularly like the quick overview and assessment of the guitar. No 20 to 30 minutes of endless chatter and 'nit' picking Great stuff Mark
Nice looking guitar. I have a Jazzmaster 6 string which looks cool. The 12 string sounded great in your hands as always but maybe it’s too thin in tone like a Danelectro 12 I once had.
Another great video! I have been on the fence about this guitar, I always wanted an electric 12 string and an acoustic 12 string. Keep the videos coming! Thank you!
Great and honest review Mark. Personally I don"t like the shape of this Guitar . I like symmetrical shapes on a Guitar. And to me the Headstock is hideous. It does sound pretty good. Thanks Mark once again for getting me a set of RokLoks very quickly. I hope sales are Booming
Mark, combining discounts from Fender and Sweetwarer, was just able to order one just like yours today for $344 with WA sales tax! Won’t be in until late in November, though!
Thank you for this, Mark. Great review. I've been intrigued by this guitar since it came out this year. I like its unique sound which you brought out very well. I'll have to look for a store that carries one to test it out for myself. Thanks again.
I think I’m going to order one of these next week. What amplifier do I want to go with it? Living room/ kitchen/back porch performance with an occasional open mic night thrown in.
aha! i knew it! seeing that in your last video, i thought - no, that can't be an original xii, can it? and i was right! but i'm still unsure if page used one of those in stairway to heaven or not - i've read conflicting stories - some say he did, others say he used something else. oh, well! haha at least don didn't hammer on your door this time, mark! and you sound great on that - and i love the hockey stick head - go gretzky! one more thing - amazon canada does not stock your rok-loks, darn it [heavy sigh] ! regardless, love from canada, and as always, now i'mgoing to pick up my reverend airwave and practice some of those classic songs, cheers!
I seem to remember him talking or writing about it somewhere, although I don’t think it was in his book but while the one he used escapes me using one of these sounds wrong to me but I don’t want swear to what is was but I’d assume he actually knew. I believe the same bit got quoted in the little book that’s just about recording the fourth album. That thing is pretty thorough.
I'm loving the tone you got out of the guitar, in all three switch positions. The bridge pickup, in particular gave you a really rich tone but still had a big dose of "jangle" to it. Thanks to your suggestions on some of the other videos, I've started plugging my Guild F2512E Deluxe through my little Spark Mini. Just a touch of chorus and reverb really brings riffs like Motel Kalifornia to life!
Thanks quick review. The guitar looks cool. I'm not sure what I think about the headstock, though. I like the sound. The intonation problem is a concern, though.
Hey Mark!! It truly does have a unique sound … If I had to put it into words I’d say it sounds Nasal .. as someone who’s voice winds up in their nose as opposed to projecting from the chest …That’s probably just the overall personality of the treble tones of Fenders personalities to begin with… Nice enough but I wouldn’t want one….
It only sounds as good as the speakers you’re hearing it on. That being said, thank you Mark. I always value your opinion. I’m leaning towards the Harley Benton as my electric 12.
Hey Mark, great review, although I was surprised how thin this beautiful looking guitar sounds. I think, maybe, Fender/Squier should have spec’d it with a ‘beefier’ plckup, maybe the Squier version of the ‘WideRange’ or similar. Interesting point regarding the bridge intonation problems you experienced. I had the same type on my Burns Double Six and, although the ‘secondary’ saddle adjustment can be a bit fiddly I do think that the hardware is much better than the far more compromised ‘standard’ 6 saddle bridges found on many 12s. Your Henley reference made me chuckle… what is wrong with the guy⁉️ He’s as rich as Croesus and, as Fil on the ‘Wings of Pegasus’ channel has proved, does nothing to stop engineers using the dreaded ‘AutoTune’ to decimate the sublime vocals of Randy Meisner on Eagles classics. Much as I love early/mid Eagles output - and just love Joe Walsh (I saw them, live, on London’s South Bank in ‘72 just after they released their first album, recorded at Olympic in London, and tickets were a less than a quid - U.K. Pound -❗️, when the band was a democracy. Their set consisted of said album and a 💩-load of Roy Orbison covers) - even live, then, the harmonies were sublime. But the guy turned into a total A-hole (sadly as did his mate Frey)❗️Their treatment of Don Fender was truly appalling. Anyhow, keep up the good work! 👍
Hey Rob. It's a bit thin but I think it's more to do with the how many levels of compression exist between the natural sound of the guitar and the final video. So much of the information is gone by the time the video is rendered and then uploaded it's hard to get an accurate portrayal of any sound. This is especially true for tube amps. I'm taking a 15 to 25 gb raw file and rendering it to maybe 1 gb. Then during the youtube upload it's scaling it down to 20 mb or so. I appreciate the feedback and the support. I hope you have a great week. Mark
12 string very limited but great. Finally, someone that knows how to play songs. Congrats on tackling some difficult ones. Finger picking 12 strings is not easy and you did an excellent job. I own one of these and like it better than a Rickenbacker I owned. Much easier to play the Squier, very narrow neck on the Ric. Tube amp clean is a must for 12 strings to get the overtones and jangle. imo
I am glad that I bought the Hagström DLX12 instead, but I have to give Squier the credits that they produced a very affordable cheapo to the Rick. Sounds very good.
I bought one when they first came out. It is definitely worth the price now. “Down the road” after they quit making them they might not be “worth” the prices that people will be asking (and getting) for them then. I highly recommend buying one now if you are the least bit interested in it.
Interesting 12, I might just get one ... I’ve never considered buying a Squire, Fender type guitar that wasn’t made in the USA. Does the neck feel like an American Fender?
Watched this video because I’ve just been lucky enough to win this exact guitar. Got to say it sounds great I gave the fender 12 string electro acoustic but this sounds very different. Thank you
Thanks for letting me know. That's why I gave it a fair review. I've probably ordered 20 guitars online (including two other Squiers) and every single one has been perfect except the Jazz12. I really appreciate you checking out the video too. Please take care and be well. Mark
I think that you could take the cheapest guitar and make it sound great. Thanks for the video - I just love your videos. You are such a superb player and it's a pleasure to watch every one. Cheers.
You can't go wrong with Dano. It sucks that they were bought out by a conglomerate. The people they brought to the NAMM show didn't even really know much about guitars. LOL. Thanks for checking out the video. I really appreciate it. I hope you have a great weekend. Mark
Hi Mark, I like the looks of the Squier Parranamal Jazzmaster 12 and your Rick o meter lol, but it sounds light. I think my Harvey Benton RB-612 sounds better at almost half the price. Plus I am not sure how much it weighs but being a solid body it mine be a little hefty. Nice review
I up and got one from Sweetwater. Intonation is fantastic right out of the box, even in first position. Nut hight perfect! The tuners feel ok, but the buttons were plated with out cleaning mold seams. The slots are course. The beast says in tune, just fine, but There is some binding at tye string retainer or nut with the Ds & As strings. I will put a treb pass to control the beast. With the 9.5 R and medium low string hight fretting out ( during bends ) is not a problem, un like with my factory set up '66 E XII, with 7.5R. Thanks you helped me decide to grab one. Amazing!
I was skeptical about this one, even though I already have 3 Squier axes. A Strat, a Tele, and a “Hello Kitty”. Each one cost me $100 when Matthews Music closed their doors. The Strat is definitely a keeper and the other 2 I just have. I have 2 regular Fenders and an Alvarez acoustic 12 which has until now, been satisfying. I feel the need now
The Burns reissues from last year are really hard to find and about 3 times the price unless you're referring to something that's just been released in the last month or so. If I'm going to spend $1500 I'd just assume spend the $2500 and get a vintage model. Thoughts?
A couple of years ago Fender issued a limited run of what they were calling the Alternate Reality Electric XII, which was an updated version of their classic Electric XII from the 1960s. I bought one, and straight away I hated the Gotoh bridge on it, which is the same bridge this Paranormal Jazzmaster has on it. They claim it has twelve individual saddles for best possible intonation, but that's misleading...there are twelve saddles, yes; but the saddles for the octave strings ride on top of the saddles for the standard strings-which means they're not truly independent of each other, and limits the amount of adjustment you can do with them. I hated the bridge so much I returned the guitar, which is a pity, because otherwise I liked it. If Fender had reissued the original Electric XII bridge on the new model-which has twelve GENUINELY independently adjustable saddles-I'd have kept it.
what a great comment. YES. exactly as far as the bridge goes. There's nothing more frustrating than having to cut your losses on one of the strings. I usually can tolerate it being a little out of pitch, but that's my forgiving nature when I'm TUNING. As far as intonation, as soon as I start hearing the issues, it spirals downhill. And it really knocks the wind out of you. You want to play but you're afraid to go up or down or hit a 5 string chord. Crazy. I've seen a couple of the fenders for sale on Reverb. They also made a line in Japan for a few years I believe. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I really appreciate your time and comment. I hope you enjoy the rest of your day. Take care and stay safe. Mark
Hi Mark, love your videos. I’d like to buy a 12 string electric guitar on a budget. Having played both which would you recommend, the Squier Paranormal 12 string or the Harley Benton 12 string?
seems many of us are looking for that Rickenbacker tone with out the price among other things .SO do you rate the Reverend 12 as a better choice over this one ? if ya had to pick one
Thanks, Mark - EXCELLENT review (as always!). Most electric 12-strings are usually compared to Rickenbackers. Do you think the Jazzmaster XII could be restrung like a Ric? Would the nut have to be replaced? Could the grooves in the bridge saddle be reversed to accommodate each string? Anyway, what a nice-looking guitar! My only other hesitation is the length of the guitar - it won't fit into a hardshell case!
Hi Mark, What did you thing of the width of the neck? I have the Fender Stratocaster XII and I find the neck a little narrow and crowded with 12 strings compared to a Takamine 12 string necks, etc.
I find it very comfortable to play. The dano and ric feel a bit crowded to me. The Takamine acoustic is a little wide for my hand. I love the way that guitar sounds but it's not easy for me to play which is why you don't see it appear as much as some other guitars in my videos. Which Fender do you have? A vintage? Thanks for checking it out and supporting. I appreciate your time and comment. Take care. Mark
@@8MinuteAxe I have a 2018 MIJ Fender Stratocaster XII. Not sure what original model it is based on. I bought it used on Reverb before the pandemic for $900. It is in mint condition. I love it even though I find it crowded on the fingerboard. But in all fairness, I have to admit I haven't played it enough to give it a fair chance. It might be fine if I did. I am just used to six string stratocasters. 🙂
First time seeing one of your videos I subscribed. To me it sounded a bit thin. I recently saw videos on a Danelectro vintage 12 string. I was very impressed. To my ears the Danelectro sounded much better.
No intonation problems with mine, but that overwound, overcompressed (12k!) bridge pickup had to go. I have a set of PV65s in mine now - real Jazzmaster pickups - and it feels much better, much more open and alive. I may try a slightly darker bridge p/u though. We'll see.
Hey, love your channel. What string(s) wouldn't intonate ? Were the G strings both plain steel ? I have the Fender Alternate Reality XII that they made a few years back. It looks like it has the same bridge as your Squier. Mine came with both G strings unwound, which I think is a terrible configuration for a 12 string. The non-octave G was an unwound 17, and that string would not intonate at all, not to mention it frets sharp anyway (at least for me). Once I switched it to an 18W, everything fell into place.
I agree on a traditional Jazzmaster, but this is a 12 string. I don’t even know if Fender makes a trem for 12. On a side note, I bought the exact same guitar, last weekend and the intonation on mine is perfect with the exception of the octave G string, which is a touch flat. I’ll adjust that when I do my first string change. Killer guitar!
How would you compare this to other affordable electric 12’s , say those under $600 or so? Have you ever done a comparison video comparing the affordable ones at about that price point? Thanks. I am not really that impressed with this new Fender 12, I played it in a store for a few minutes. Anyway it would be cool to hear your opinion on a comparison. Thanks.

I particularly like the quick overview and assessment of the guitar. No 20 to 30 minutes of endless chatter and 'nit' picking
Great stuff Mark
Great selection of riffs to demonstrate- great video
Hey Mike. I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know that you enjoyed the video. I hope you have a great week. Take care and be well. Mark
Excellent demo, brother. Gave us what we need to see/hear
Good review. I'm tempted with this Jazzmaster XII. Need to see one & play it. 🙂
Mark, combining discounts from Fender and Sweetwarer, was just able to order one just like yours today for $344 with WA sales tax! Won’t be in until late in November, though!
Amazing playing as usual. You could make a broom stick sound good.
Hearing the opening Smiths riff sold me
Thank you for this, Mark. Great review. I've been intrigued by this guitar since it came out this year. I like its unique sound which you brought out very well. I'll have to look for a store that carries one to test it out for myself. Thanks again.
Thanks, Mark, for a helpful review.
I think the middle position sounded best. Thank you for the review
I fucking LOVE the Rick-O-Meter
LOL. Thanks FH. I really appreciate it and I apologize for the grossly late reply. DOH. Take care and have a great weekend. Mark
I think I’m going to order one of these next week. What amplifier do I want to go with it? Living room/ kitchen/back porch performance with an occasional open mic night thrown in.
I recently bought a Boss Katana and it is great! I'm going to do a video on it over the next few weeks. Enjoy the new guitar, looks great 🎉
If you're looking for a solid classic tone you can't go wrong with a Blues Jr. or a Vox AC4. Blackstar makes some really nice amps too.
@@8MinuteAxe Is it permitted to play a Fender through a Vox amp? Asking for a friend.😁🎸😆
Thanks for the video, Mark! The Don Henley/copyright strike bit was hilarious. Do you like XTC? They had a lot of killer 12-string riffs.
aha! i knew it! seeing that in your last video, i thought - no, that can't be an original xii, can it? and i was right! but i'm still unsure if page used one of those in stairway to heaven or not - i've read conflicting stories - some say he did, others say he used something else. oh, well! haha at least don didn't hammer on your door this time, mark! and you sound great on that - and i love the hockey stick head - go gretzky! one more thing - amazon canada does not stock your rok-loks, darn it [heavy sigh] ! regardless, love from canada, and as always, now i'mgoing to pick up my reverend airwave and practice some of those classic songs, cheers!
Wow sounds great. Squier did a great job on these.
Mark
You give the beat reviews!!
Tube amp clean is a must for 12 strings to get the overtones and jangle. imo
some lovely tunes fella ...keep up the good work ...
Loved the demo
I am glad that I bought the Hagström DLX12 instead, but I have to give Squier the credits that they produced a very affordable cheapo to the Rick. Sounds very good.
You do make them all sound great, Mark! I probably won't be buying this guitar, but it does seem to be worth the price, and down the road, who knows?
I bought one when they first came out. It is definitely worth the price now. “Down the road” after they quit making them they might not be “worth” the prices that people will be asking (and getting) for them then. I highly recommend buying one now if you are the least bit interested in it.
Interesting 12, I might just get one ...
I’ve never considered buying a Squire, Fender type guitar that wasn’t made in the USA.
Does the neck feel like an American Fender?
Man! It's almost TOO in tune! That's a nice sign! Good review man!
Watched this video because I’ve just been lucky enough to win this exact guitar. Got to say it sounds great I gave the fender 12 string electro acoustic but this sounds very different. Thank you
Sorry to hear about the intonation mines perfectly intonated! Minimal adjustment
Thanks for letting me know. That's why I gave it a fair review. I've probably ordered 20 guitars online (including two other Squiers) and every single one has been perfect except the Jazz12. I really appreciate you checking out the video too. Please take care and be well. Mark
@@8MinuteAxe I wouldnt mark it off as bad good** on you! Maybe a second one would do you better ? Sell this one ?:)or giveaway blessings
Well played!! Thank you!!
I think that you could take the cheapest guitar and make it sound great. Thanks for the video - I just love your videos. You are such a superb player and it's a pleasure to watch every one. Cheers.
Good one! Thanks! :)
Much appreciated. I hope you have a great day! Mark
I still like my Danelectro 12 string it’s the best bargain Korean made 12 for the price. Mine was around $375.00
You can't go wrong with Dano. It sucks that they were bought out by a conglomerate. The people they brought to the NAMM show didn't even really know much about guitars. LOL. Thanks for checking out the video. I really appreciate it. I hope you have a great weekend. Mark
Worth it all the way😮 outstanding!!!
The beast says in tune, just fine, but
There is some binding at tye string retainer or nut with the Ds & As strings.
I will put a treb pass to control the beast.
With the 9.5 R and medium low string hight fretting out ( during bends ) is not a problem, un like with my factory set up '66 E XII, with 7.5R.
Thanks you helped me decide to grab one. Amazing!
The question of how that narrow neck is at the nut has been posed here and on other channels and yet nobody seems to want to answer it.
I feel the need now
Nice choices to demonstrate
great choice of riffs.
Been saving for one of these since they were announced, but can't decide against one of the new, revamped Burns SSJ 12s.
The Burns reissues from last year are really hard to find and about 3 times the price unless you're referring to something that's just been released in the last month or so. If I'm going to spend $1500 I'd just assume spend the $2500 and get a vintage model. Thoughts?
I loved it - but I might go for another 12-string electric... but the price atm is awesome at this guitar so there's that.
I thought I was noticing a distinct lack of Ticket To Ride.. until you played it!
Mark
Nice looking guitar. Would you be able to recommend a reasonably priced electric 12 string that is reverse strung??
Hi Mark, love your videos. I’d like to buy a 12 string electric guitar on a budget. Having played both which would you recommend, the Squier Paranormal 12 string or the Harley Benton 12 string?
Nice review...I'll stay with my acoustic, though!
I’m sold ✌️😎
I’ve been looking for that Substitute intro fingering version for while. Everything I find is only the 2nd go around with the conventional D.
seems many of us are looking for that Rickenbacker tone with out the price among other things .SO do you rate the Reverend 12 as a better choice over this one ? if ya had to pick one
Hi Mark, I've been sitting on the fence with the Jazzmaster. What can you tell me that will make me fall one way or another?@write_me_MinuteAxe8
Hi Mark,
What did you thing of the width of the neck?
We'll see.
Great video! Thanks. I subscribed.
thanks for the review.
Ive never understood why anyone would buy a jazzmaster without the tremolo that makes them so great
I agree on a traditional Jazzmaster, but this is a 12 string.
Thanks.
I wonder if string thru and top loaded together is the norm for twelve strings
