  • The U.S. Department of Justice filed a sweeping lawsuit against Apple, accusing the technology company and smartphone maker of maintaining a monopoly by unfairly squeezing out the competition. Andrew Chang explains why the DOJ alleges Apple broke antitrust laws, and examines the point at which a monopoly becomes illegal.

@@alexandrumacavei3223, fam, just look up parts pairing and stop trying to use your single solitary experience as a way to back up your ignorance. Just because you can use a third-party part, doesn't mean it'll be 100% up to snuff. I believe it depends on the phone you have. It's a newer practice, so older phones are affected less than newer ones (if I remember correctly). An example of 3p parts (or even 1p parts from another iPhone) not working is you can swap the screen but the fingerprint reader won't work. Just look it up. It's not hard. The time it took you to write that response, you could've found answers yourself. 🙄

Not just the smartphone experience, literally everythign about Apple's ecosystem is anti-competitive.
Apple peripherals used with non-Apple products lose features. Non-Apple peripherals don't work as well with Apple-proprietary-ones do, despite little difference in design. Ever tried installing an app from a source other than the Apple Store? You can't do it without some rather heroic measures, which then cut you off from Apple's ecosystem until you re-install a stock version of iOS.
Don't even get me started on hardware repairs and replacement parts sourcing.

Samsung does the same with their watches, they have more features with Samsung phones, and work better with Samsung phones than with other Android devices. The apple watch is made for ios, duh it only works with Apple phones, like the current Android watches don't work with iPhones. This is insane, instead of going after Apple, tell Google to stop trying to sell 2 to 3 year old chips on their flagship phones for 1000usd.

    • @Salinz

Others watches are restricted on the iPhone by apple. Apple has the choice of making the iPhone work with Android. The os does not restrict it.
So Apple has a platform and a SEPARATE product, the Apple watch. This product is given an unfair advantage because it does not compete only on its own merits but is given a boost by THE HANDICAP platform places on its competitors.

From the beginning, it was Steve himself who put up the idea of not letting user decide what is best for them and not letting them into their devices, (a closed system) Rather Apple would decide what's best. For it makes apple, APPLE!

Imagine a theft happened in your neighborhood. And they create a broad geofence warrant and texting warrants. They right now can’t really do that. But if more people used “Super App” to send messages, they could collect more info with these types of warrants.
Don’t think that will happen? It already is a thing with geofence warrants. Right now trying to broadly get text message data isn’t very effective.

So users end up thinking apple ecosystem is so good that other products and services can't even interact nicely with apple devices and that makes other services seem worse in eyes of apple users. Google doesn't block apple users from accessing TH-cam, neither they intentionally downgrade apple user's experience of interacting with youtube.

I know a lot of apple things are annoying, but I doubt they have the obligation to make these changes. I think the closed eco-system is a double edge sword. I am using iphone for years and I am intentionally opt out using any apple subscription because I am afraid of lossing these services if I change my phone. For the same reason I am really reluctant to buy airpods.
I really dont see where this lawsuit is going. I think a lot of people dont understand that it cost time and money to make things work. The crippling experience of apple products in third party platform is more likely that apple dont want to spend money to make the product compatible rather than apple spend extra money to make these products incompatible.
Can you really force a company to spending money to work for other companies? If that's the case, who's next? Maybe Sony Canon, Nikon? For years, they use exclusive connection between the lens and the camera, which make switching brand almost impossible unless you sell the whole system or use converter that usually hurt the performance. How about BMW? There are a lot of maintainance service that you can only do on in BMW dealership. It is certainly a crippling experience for any third party repair shops. Should you force they to design their cars in a way that any repair shop can maintaince them like a toyota?

That's one reason EV innovation has failed. Society needs the precedent of standardization to move forward and advance human engineering. No company should be allowed to single-handedly stifle innovation.

@@ninjanerdstudent6937 No, EV innovation did not fail, it only fail NA market. I visited my hometown, Guangzhou, last year. 50% cars on the road are EV, over 70% are electrified and they are sale for $20-30k USD with good range, ride quality and large space. If they are sale in America, I have no idea how US automaker is gonna survive. That's probably the reason they dont sale here.
The very reason you dont have affordable EV in America because of your beloved "standardization". The American loss the upper hand in EV development and they know they are not making the rule, aka standard, of EV for the next decades. They rather you dont have an afforable and easy to maintain car than lossing money to China. Making standard is never about innovation but about monopoly. Why do you think companies are so enthusiastic about becoming the standard? Because it is easier for the entity that make the standard to make money. Everyone who follow the standard basically just work "for" that entity.
Why do you even think "Society needs the precedent of standardization to move forward and advance human engineering."? Even you can think of a protocol that can out perform the existing standard, but you cant sell it because it doesnt follow the standard. What kind of advancement is that?

It is not about the percentage, but that Apple doesn't allow other marketplaces and/or restrict them to the point that nobody would use them. Steam doesn't prevent games being installed from other sources in your computer, but Apple DOES it in iOS.
"It will hinder innovation" is just an excuse. You can install 3rd party apps in MacOS without problems and they could very well allow the same in iOS, but they want to keep their monopoly for as long as they can.

Android user here and have been one since 2009. In particular, I've been extremely partial to the Nexus brand which is now the Pixel. I'll NEVER switch to the iPhone platform as I'm a creature of habit.
Pixels compete really well with the iPhone product, but the iPhone kills pixels in its raw power and it's beautiful transitions. Both my kids have the latest iPhones so i can say this with experience. It's not lost on me that Apple sells you a product and with Android, we ARE the product. The platforms are on two different op models, where Android is ad driven based on your data that it's constantly mining.
All this said, Apple isn't selling a competitive product if walling off features to keep the competition at bay, hence keeping their pricing so high by duping its consumers into thinking they have a superior product. This law suit amongst others can be a good win for the consumer and the overall consumer experience.

Some of these things are silly, it’s about not understanding how the tech works.
For example, message app is a mix of the good old SMS and WhatsApp, when you’re talking with some green bubble it means you’re using SMS from your phone carrier instead of sending messages over the internet, it’s natural that the ability to do fancier things decrease when you’re sending an SMS.

I have a pair of Bose earbuds. My wife borrowed them and paired them with her iphone. It nearly made the headphones unusable for myself after she returned them. Weird software glitches and annoying notifications, some of which remained after unpairing with her phone and pairing again with mine. Eventually sorted things out, but it was way more difficult than it should have been. I have no evidence other than this anecdotal story, but I suspect apple intentionally messed things up. That or they wrote clunky software and I think either way it's pretty bad news.
