As sad as this song/video is, it actually saved his dad's life. His dad donated a kidney when he was younger, and later developed stage 4 kidney disease. They were unable to find him a doner. Then a distant relative seen this video and came forward as a doner for him. Such a great story. Great reaction!! 😊
The lines about two grown men saying goodbye came from their days in the British military. James was a captain, and his father was a colonel in the army. When they would deploy, they would say that to one another to avoid getting emotional in front of others.
When they recorded this, his Dad was on his deathbed, and this was honestly James' goodbye to him. Luckily, he found a transplant candidate just in time.
His dad was a kidney donor, and his remaining kidney was failing. After this song was released, a distant cousin heard about it and was matched as a donor. James' father is doing well today.
As soon as I saw the title I was like "Ooh boy lets see how long she lasts before she cries". I genuinely dont know how he got through this song, god that must have been hard because yeah that IS is his Dad and when filming this his dad had terminal kidney disease. The video actually caused a distant relative to get tested and was a match and he survived but this was him singing goodbye to his Dad for real. Its especially powerful because they are both british military men who were raised with the stiff upper lip mentality so this sort of vulnerability is usually unspoken and just understood. I saw this video not long after losing my dad and it was fucking brutal ;_;
This hits me every time I lost my dad when I was 5 he was in his early twenties and last year I lost 2 uncle's and 1 auntie and my stepdad That was his dad beside him and he wad dying but because of this video he got a donor that saved his life and they were both in the British military
I remember when I first saw this video a few years ago...I remember thinking this is going to be a cheap shot if they have his father fade away at the end. I was watching it with my wife who has now passed...I remember I stopped breathing waiting for it and he did not fade away and at the moment when his father pated him on the shoulder I stood straight up went to the bathroom and cried my eyes...My wife knocked on the door and asked if I was ok? I said yeah..She said ok can you unlock the door you have been in there for 25 minutes now I got to pee...lol I did not even realize That I had locked the door not alone been in there for 25 minutes lol
This tune is no joke. In my toxically masculine way, I cry every time I listen. Especially the part where he says while you're sleeping, ill try to make you proud, gets me every time.
Two ex soldiers from my home county Norfolk 🇬🇧 met them both 😊 After the shoot the crew were tears and his dad said “ I’m still here “ ❤ Carry you home or the girl that never was next ? Both 😢sad

The simplicity of the video makes it so much bigger and raw.

Sound a beautiful, amazing and heeartfelt song, lovely reaction. When you first see his dad in the video it really tugs at your heartstrings.
I'm preparing for a goodbye that fits this painful mould ❤
That final arm pat from Dad always makes me cry.
