    First of all let me say thank you. These people were more than a number. Families were often ashamed they did not understand mental illness. To know some veterans was placed in places like this. I remember one my grandparents said people were often paid to drop off loved ones with mental problems to get them out of the way. This both sadden and sicken me. They were human beings, often mistreated.. to die not have name but a number shows lack of respect. I'm not surprised there's a sad energy from those who were forgotten.families did not give a name because of shame.im glad you visited this site paid respect to those who died here and the forgotten ones. For that I salute you. Thank you and appreciate you for doing this. Though it might be different from your other videos. It's much needed people need know this happened. The fact you cared and took the time to do this and unlike some would turn away pretend it didn't happen. You paid respect to those who needed it and hopefully now their souls can move on to a better place. To be forgotten, unwanted, unloved, is sad. Keep up the good work you did a good thing. Always appreciate what you share and which is why I enjoy the notifications I get. Click on and watch as soon as I can. You are indeed a good person with a good and caring soul.👍💯 respect. 🙂👋. Neita james and family.🙏.

    I have been to the ridges several times. There used to be, and may still be, the Kennedy art museum in the main building at the front of the asylum. that was the only area that was open to the public at that time. The building and grounds are fascinating and there is an air of sadness that does accompany the site. It wouldnt be difficult to imagine that life here could be miserable and lonely. The cemetery was well trimmed and easy to navigate and not neglected or vandalized in any way. It was very moving to see the stones, one section in a large circle, and nice to see that some stones had names and not just numbers. A very important part of history and Im very glad that it is still standing. There are undoubtedly a wealth of stories that could be told of the old asylum and its residents. Thanks for the video.

Also My auntie was given at least 3 lots electric shock treatment in a mental hospital in the late 80's she was never the same again and took her own life shortly after. Thank you for sharing this very moving vedio. So very heartbreaking, as I know well. One of my Aunts was Institutionalize at Columbus State Hospital for the "mentally disturbed for most of her life. I never remember ever goin to visit her nor did my Mother. My Grandfather would take her peanuts as she loved to feed the squirrels. Her only health problem...she had Epilepsie and would become very violent. Sadly she passed away while there...all alone. To this day it still bothers me to think she was alone, with no family by her side when she left this earth. She is buried in Mechanicsburg Ohio beside my Grandparents.
    Thank you for sharing and showing us we are all God's people...May God Bless You.

    Glad you shared this video even if it was sad. I live in Oklahoma about 20 miles from where a school for Indians was in the 1800's, the school is still there and the brick church also, sadly there is a cemetery by the church when some of the school faculty members and students and the preacher of the church is buried. There was a flu outbreak in the school in the late 1800s and several students and faculty members passed away from it as well as the preacher of the church.

    Many of those Veterans were undoubtedly suffering from what we know now as Post Traumatic Syndrome Disorder (PTSD), Then known as shell shock, battle fatigue, etc. As in the case of the victim of epilepsy, they figured it was easier to lock them away in a dungeon than to find treatment for them. When the grave was full, they burned the bodies my husband's grandmother worked in the asylum

  • @TravelwithAustin
    @TravelwithAustin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing that I think is really important to remember is that unclaimed did not always mean unloved for many it was cheaper to allow the asylum to bury the body of their loved one than to do it themselves.
    NAMI has done great work with the cemeteries over the year, and iirc they are the reason that any of the graves have name plates on them because they attempt to hunt down the surviving family members.
    Sadly we have many lost graves that were loss either due to records being lost, or even people stealing the tombstones from the graveyard.

    There is a cemetery in Columbus called the TICO Cemetery and it's where they buried those from the mental hospital which sat on the grounds for years. Some of the headstones simply read: Specimens, others simply have the patients hospital number.

    That looks like a very dark and sad place there I've never been there but I got a vibe from it for sure a lot of lost souls buried there no telling how bad they had it being there and probably experimented on like mice no doubt that is part of my bad vibe I got from it.. you were outstanding good job buddy 👍👌✌️. Is that building still being used for anything now days?

    Yes, back in the day people with mental health issues or learning disabilities were treated horrifically. It's heart breaking what they had to endure. Could the veterans that are buried there have suffered from Shell Shock or PTSD? Yes, God bless them all.

    It is so sad that these people had to endure the ignorance of those years when so little was known about mental illness and how to treat it. But I think what is even more sad, is that when they passed, they were buried basically in an unmarked grave. They had names. They could have etched that into the stone instead of just a number. May their poor souls rest in peace.

    Awful, sad -places. I used to live near a couple of these types of hospitals here in the UK. Unfortunately, when the larger one closed, it was allowed to fall into massive disrepair. In it's day it was such a lovely big building, again with beautiful gardens where fruit and vegetables grew, all done by the patients. There were staff houses also on the land. That said, however lovely it was, it is still so very sad why some people ended up there. Not just because they had a medical condition that wasn't understood back then, but for no reason at all. One little boy for instance, for peeing in the street, ended up there and I believe spent the rest of his days there. Some of the reasons, these days we cannot comprehend and at the time, for the people being placed there, they couldn't either. They became institutionalised and some, even with mental health problems. Also, like here, grave stones with numbers instead of names, it is so very, very sad. Thank you for remembering these people, I am sure if they knew, they would appreciate being remembered as people and not just a number

    Wonder if any records can be located that correlate numbers to names. 🤔 Sometimes old newspapers recorded names of people put into institutions, and maybe census records have names etc. So sad how humans can treat other sentient beings. So very disturbing.

    In some cases they have death certificates listing their cause of death, along with many of the stones, whether they had just a # or their names. Those I did look at appeared to die from an actual medical issue, I did see George Aldridge who had traumatic seplicemia from falling from a chair. Another Henry Aeh was one of the veterans, CW 30th OH Inf Comp A.
