the problem is the expectation set by parents, schools and peer pressure. Schools and government need to set expectations to the parents where such exams do not necessarily dictate how the future will be for their children, that should be done first. Teachers should also expose the students to all outcomes rather than focusing on negativity (as a motivation for the students to excel). This is the most basic social problem that is caused by both the government and the parents where it is a domino effect and the last chip to fall and suffer are the students/children.

eddy360146 Singapore's education system is based on meritocracy. In other words, u do well in exams it is almost guarenteed that you succed in life. So how parents who want to see their children succeed in life not set a high expectation for their children?
that's the conception that we all have right? study hard, get to a good school, study even harder, get better grades, get scholarship and then get a job with the gov or in a mnc make a lot of bucks, get married, buy a house and settle down. Nothing wrong with that. The only thing wrong is that when this meritocracy is so strictly defined that if one fails an exam, his/her life is almost certain to be over. That is wrong, performing well in exams do not necessarily guarantee a success nor not performing well will be a certain dead end in the future. My point is that instead of exerting so much pressure onto a child, why not guide the kid, encourage to do well, if the child didn't make the cut, encourage him/her it's not the end, just the route ahead will be tougher and try again as well.

Now, this is why Finland has the best education system in the world. They don’t have homework, examinations, immense pressure on students or anything like that. The schools focus on cooperation and not competition among students. The school system lets kids be kids.

Actually sometimes its not the parents that add on to the pressure, I feel that it is the system. While growing up, my parents always know what to expect from me and do not set impossible standards. I actually felt ashamed when my teacher expressed her disappointment in my O level results. More than 10 years down the road, sometimes I look back and wonder why did i let my grades determine my mood.

I'm Malaysian here. Still having my SPM test and one last subject to go! I strongly agree with the director of this short film. This short film is really meaningful and truly portrays most of the present Malaysian and Singaporean students' life and dilemma they faced.

WHY IS THIS NOT THE TOP COMMENT. I agree on this very much. I think that children in the 21st Century are facing difficulties in studies, especially. Parents really shouldn't put pressure on their children. Like in the video, the child will think they are bad children if they fail in anything their parents want them to acheive. Also, even if the parents tell them to share their problems, they most likely won't want to, thinking it will just make things worse. I'm not saying they are bad parents, but they must also be aware of their child's behaviour. My sister has a friend, they live in a hostel. Apparently, her friend is the eldest among her other siblings. Her father fell sick, and her mother is a nurse, so she won't be able to take care of the rest of her family. Her mother decided to move my sister's friend to another school near their hometown. However, she didn't want to. We live in Malaysia, so we have exams like UPSR, PT3, SPM and such. PT3 is usually held for 10th graders, so my sister and her friend here are 15.
So she was pressured. Taking care of her 4 other younger siblings, studying, exams, etc. She became stressed. Her parents saw her acting very weirdly, day by day and turns out she became mental, due to depression.
This happened earlier in the year, and she is still in the mentals' ward. I have no idea how her family's doing, but it's sad.

Actually, I took my PSLE last year and I have lost a very good friend/lover from it. She was the kindest and sweetest person I ever knew. She was there for me when my abusive dad was being trash. She had strict parents and could no longer take the pressure from them. She scored decently, but didn’t score as well as me and her parents kept comparing her marks with mine. I went to express and she went to NA. We ended at the same school but different courses. She studied very hard while i slacked so i felt horrible. A week before our school started, she jumped. Fly High my best friend, I will always miss you.

Thank you to Splash Productions for producing this short film. It is a much needed one for everyone in Singapore. I am a tutor and I've heard about and witnessed the deaths of my students' friends. It is extremely devastating and heartbreaking. My plea to all parents and parents to be, is to Please genuinely love your child for who they are and not what you want them to be. Spend legit human hours with them, get to know them and let them get to know you too. Growing up in a competitive family myself (and contemplated suicide several times), I truly understand how Zihui feels. So please, those feelings are real and not some mental disorder. Just put the phone away and spend quality time with them. 🙏

i think psle is a failed exam system because it sieves out those who have matured at a young age, just like gep. Many who are talented or smarter than these gep/high scorers but did not study hard for psle will not be able to enter better sec schs, and the environment they are put in wont let them reach their potential. National exams should come at 16, not 12

I relate to this so much I used to be a very stressed out kid when I took psle.. aimed for 250++ During prelims I got predicted 253 but the pressure of not maintaining my grades got to me & I ended up with a T score of 232 or something.. I moved overseas a few years after for high school lost interest in studying and started failing my exams or just barely passing & getting lost in the whole education system. When I took the A level equivalent in Australia & flunked tho it was a big wake up call for me. I took a bridging course studied my ass off & ended up topping it. Now I'm in my first year of engineering. Moral of the story is dont be so hard on yourself life has its ups and downs. A student who gets straight A grades right now doesnt mean he will be an A grader forever. Likewise even if you're flunking everything right now it doesnt mean you'll flunk forever. if you're willing to put in the time and effort and be patient even if you're a slower learner than the rest you will get where you want to be someday.

Justin’s parents are a good example of how parents should treat their kids. They are right about how there are many other good schools in Singapore. Just because Raffles and Nanyang are the top schools in Singapore doesn’t mean the other schools are bad.
His parents also let him try things which he wants to do. By doing that he can relieve stress and he is learning. Justin’s parents are also supportive of his dreams of being a water polo player. Doctors and Lawyers aren’t the only jobs where you can male large sums of money.
I didn't remember being so stressed when I took my psle most probably because I was immature and didn't think much of my future ahead at 12 years old. I didn't think it'll matter much if I got a higher score then anyways. but this really represents some p6 students out there, I'm glad there's a documentary like this out there. Your wrong, some stress is good for you and stress for PSLE isn’t useless. Sure I hate it too, but I have to disagree with your point. This is the facts. PSLE is a national exam where you start to learn that you have to make your future, it makes you stress so you can focus on it and not be a lazy slug. That’s when you learn your future matters. Stress brings you to success,because when stressed. You try hard, and remember that said that trying hard can bring success. Yes yes, not everyone’s success is on academic but it doesn’t mean that they can’t do that right? Wait and see, score amazing for your PSLE and exams all the way then in your adulthood, no need to clean floors at all

I think we all need to see the point of the film - it's about noticing those in pain. And while PSLE is indeed a major stressor of this issue, i do hope we can take steps to identify those who are suffering in silence, and sound out their pain. And even if you dont live in Singapore, this is a prime example of just how vulnerable kids are to serious psychological stressors. And while students are only 20% of the population, they are going to be 100% of our future. A simple "how are you" can go a long way. Spread this video, it deserves to be viral, it deserves to be known. This is something we cannot keep quiet about any longer

I'd rather have an education system that is holistic and catering to their interests than pressuring kids for exams all the time. Books and a structured system whether it's just only English, Math and Science can only go so far. And damn it's too competitive. For example, some people wanna do art, some may wanna pursue sports, some music, I rather have a system that will cater to their interests and stuff.

I swear everyone here is either complaining about how easy PSLE is or how badly they have done in the comments section. TBH this isn't exactly the platform and you're kind of missing the point here. Everyone have different pov and environment, it's not about how difficult the paper is or how they should be grateful for their excellent study conditions. She is missing out on life, still young and unexperienced, she is stuck with her own problems which she doesn't know how to deal with. Her life is so constructed that failure isn't a option for her. Well, not exactly the person to say it. I didn't do too well for my PSLE but who cares? I'm doing well in secondary school life awaiting for my Os result next year. It's really about the balance in your life. Don't get too stressed out!

This reminds me of a childhood friend who also sucide because she could not get into the special (3 years course) in secondary school while she managed to get into express (4 years course).
I regret not staying with her that day because she claim age is fine and I am too excited and wanted to share with my parents n family that I get into my choosen school n my psle result.
Her story is very different. Her mum is already in her 50s when she is 12 and they are from very poor family so she is determined to finish school n start work to reduce her mum's stress n hardwork...
Every single batch of Singaporean Student have experienced and went through PSLE. No doubt the syllabus have gotten more and more tough each year, I don't see how students who had a less condusive environment at home in the past can deal with it while students now generally have a better life at home and receive tuitions cannot deal with PSLE. And im very tired of people complaining about it. Personally I had my PSLE at 2012 and attained 250. By no means it is a very good result but enough to go by.
henry kenneth I agree. I took PSLE in 2012 too. Didn't do as well as you but enough to enter express stress in a Neighbourhood secondary school. I am also wondering why parents are stressing their children so much about excelling in PSLE, because it doesn't determine ones future. I know some friends who flunked PSLE but did well in O's. At the end of the day, all express students in the different schools will sit for O levels and have equal chance to do well. This is when PSLE results do not matter anymore.

Ariel Jess Sometimes, perhaps parents are stressing their child for PSLE so that they will get into IP/IB and won't have to go for O Levels. The parents stress a lot too for their child's exams, and they don't want their child to go through too many exams, so if their child gets into IP/IB he/she won't need to go for O Levels.

The idea of a Magicarp is well placed in the movie. Magicarp one of the weakest pokemon, which is frowned upon by many trainers. This pokemon turns into one of the strongest pokemon, a Grayodos. Hence, a person cannot be judged by their exam results alone, because what matters is how you do in your life exams, if you pass you will turn from a magicarp into a Grayodos.

Actually, a main reason most PSLE candidates can't do their best is that their worries and anxiety pull their negativity up. So many do bad from careless mistakes. Anyways PSLE exams are the most crucial in my childhood and I'm currently still studying for it.

All i can say as a singaporean who just experienced PSLE not long ago, our system have its problems and its not to be ignored... PSLE is sometimes going way too far for just primary school kids... MOE said psle will be cancelled, but srsly it dosent change anything... The new system is even more harsh for the kids...

Great storyline! Excellent acting! KIids need to be taught that failure is part and parcel of life. They just need to pick themselves up and start going again. The problem is that well meaning parents place too much of their own expectations on their kids, and the kid think they just can't measure up. Tragedy can be avoided if parents don't behave like they themselves are the ones sitting for the exams in front of their kids - kids see this kind of behaviour and get even more stressed. The important thing is to pace out the learning over the year and just be chill when it comes to exams....Last minute cramming doesn't really help. It only overwhelms the poor kid. Let them sleep early every night - that's more important.

to be honest guys why push ur kids to so many classes ended up , not you being stress but your kids. i believe children like them should play more while study. well either they pass or fail parents shud accept them the way they are. if i really have my own kid i wud tell them to work hard and play hard. i wouldnt wan them to miss out their fun as a kid. childrens shudnt be working so hard becuz of the parents. but parents shud be more understandable and listen what the child wants. study is important . listen to the kids interest are important to. its hates to say i pity the child as she doesnt have any life studying hard ended up stress. parents shud learn how learn how to love them more even they fail .

I wasn’t really stressed for PSLE because I thought of it as another exam in my school just that the seating arrangement is different :D
But I have to get used to having exams in Sec school now since I’m sec 1 and my CT is next week. Feeling a little stress because of having an exam in a different environment but I think it’s best to treat major exams like your normal SAs or CTs (ofc still have to study lah, just don’t stress so much) because it helped me quite a bit

I’m sec 2 and currently having exams, and im scared that I wouldn’t do well and repeat next yr again. I actually thought of suiciding if I retain, I really did. Was just thinking about how and where I’m going to die if it happened to me. School hasn’t been the greatest this year and I’m pretty much isolated with nobody to talk to. I’ve been feeling this way since April and haven’t opened up to anyone. One time I felt so suicidal I texted the Singapore Samaritan’s number, but in the end I just stopped texting them lol
Maybe this is a sign to not do it? But I’m so spoiled that I’m hardly ever good at anything. My grades horrible, no interest and don’t know what I wanna be in the future. The message here is really good but remember to study kids!!! Don't go binge watch movies and fail your test because you think grades aren't important because they are. Good grades help you get into a good college, good college helps you get a good job. Yes, it doesn't mean you'll always have success but here's better chances. Don't stress over it though, and remember to have your fun too.But then again, I'm in Australia so what do I know about the pressure there. I wish you all good luck.
I dsa-ed into Dunman high through bilingualism but I did not plan ahead, neither did my parents force me to prepare a portfolio, I didn’t go to any competitions or win any medals in chinese or English but I got accepted, I think that some parents are pressuring their children too much and being kiasu. My chinese and English had never been very good but I was just above average so I surprised myself during psle, i think parents might have put too much pressure on children to do well in psle, however, my parents gave me time to relax and did not pressure me to revise and mug till late at night so I am really thankful for such supportive parents that did not pressure me but encouraged me to strive to do my best
I got 232 and I was so heartbroken but actually psle isn’t as bad as you think it is. You just have to memorize all the notes and listen in class
I myself have a hard time, being a perfectionist. As a high schooler, I always aim for a perfect 4.0, and an A- already have my skin crawling. My family always compare me with my older cousin who is a natural prodigy. It made me work harder, but at the cost of anxiety, stress and intense rebellious hatred. Now I think I am better, but my anxiety makes me unable to procrastinate ( a good habit, some may think, but it is a result of my anxiety) and stressed out over the smallest thing.

When I have a child one day, I will never let my child fall to the messages the education system gives to YOUNG children. From all the years in primary school, being placed in Foundation class during P6 was the best thing ever. Besides teaching that were realistic to our level, we were introduced to lessons on life thanks to our form teacher, who was like our wise grandma. One time, she told us that grades do not dictate your self worth. It struck because we were often given shit by other "standard" classes and looked down upon just because we couldnt do complex algebra, and it did affected my self worth and potential. But we never gave up because of our form teacher and the entire class (

When i was on Form 5(Malaysian Here).
I was really stress out i not confidence with my self and i kept skipping class just to let my stress out. And sometimes i was to stress i thinking of suicide many times cuz i dont want to destroy my parent hopes. But finally my father caught me skipping school and i got a really good beating that i will remember till now that make me a human.
But even though i barely got a good grades it SPM. My parent still support me and i got alot of failures when i on college until i got kicked out but they still support me in their way not directly. Now i got my second chance i need to do well in my second college. Heads up folks even u fail many times it does not make u a failure .just look up and try ur best.
idk why ppl are so stressed taking psle esp the parents pushing their children. my prelim was 205 and my parents didnt give me any stress at all. they always say" 尽力就好" which means "try your best" in the end i got 230. ofc to some, 230 is not good but i dont see the point of getting into a top secondary school. i went to a neighbourhood sch near my house because really, sleep is very important. And its yourself who is taking the exam, not the school. Yall still learn the same thing at the end of the day so why must give yourself so much stress?

I am always pressed as an Asian. I live in America but I am Asian. I’ve always been having good grades. But this year was different, I kept getting C’s and 1 D. My parents were so disappointed of me, I got my computer and phone token away for 2 weeks. I hate the stereotype “Asians are smart and they always listen to directions.” People who assume that make me angry. I feel like people treat us like we’re angels. Also I'm retaking my PSLE this yr,since I've been having depression since 2013 and it affected my attendence to school last year...I'm happy my parents support my dreams and goals,and just tell me to do my best.
I can relate to this a lot,I wouldn't be here enjoying time with close friends and drawing if my parents never knew of my depression.
In the Philippines, most of us struggle for good grades just so we could land a better job. During the process we would tirelessly review for exams, print handouts for readings and would cram whenever the examination date is nearing... For those fortunate, the level of preparation for Board examinations intensifies whenever we reach College. Aside from preparations, expectations get higher. Although we tend to burn out of all the stress, at the end of the day, examination results will not determine who we are.
