Even if they removed a specific storyline the history of the comic being a bit problematic is still there. There are articles even pointed out that her neighborhood consisted only 2% of black the rest were asian and white. The other issue was that Nora developed the character awkwafina when she was 16. Take from that what you will.

I agree with you. It does annoy me that some people speak a certain way try to imitate a particular speech pattern to their own ends. Not only have I grown up speaking that way my whole life, but with a focus on linguistics in college I can definitely tell that's not how she talks. Awkwafinas aave speech pattern is common among a lot of people who imitate the vernacular to the best of their ability. It's a combination of New York, Baltimore, Houston, and Long Beach with a little bit of Atlanta thrown in. That's what happens when you group all black entertainers together and form speech patterns from them as a collective, rather than realizing they all have separate, regional accents. When speaking that way she often sounds like she needs to cough, and her gestures are far too exaggerated. She also sound perpetually irritated or sassy which is common among imitators since most of them associate aave with aggressiveness or attitudes. Now if she grew up speaking that way, why is her grammar, sentence structure, slang, annunciation and phonology all over the place? There would be a base aave accent that she always returns to as a result of her regional upbringing, and it's just... not there.

Yeah I don't understand how these guys ignore these facts that were pointed out. The problem was that she was faking an accent that is most recognizable from African Americans. Nobody said( at least I think) that Asian Americans can't have an accent. It is possible but you have to look at statistics rather than assume that out of thin air an Asian American will pop up with a thick ass southern accent. That possibility is pretty low.
I remember a video going around on Twitter of an Asian woman who has a blaccent and speaks AAVE and people did draw analogies with her and Awkwafina because the woman was speaking as she genuinely does. It wasn’t an act or anything to be profited from. I too “talk white” and code switch, so I get that people can talk certain ways that may not be the norm for their demographic, but with Awkwafina, it just seems like I’m watching a minstrel show.

From what I understand the ceo of marvel said that the film would be a box office experiment because if it was bad they postponed the release of Eternals, so Shang chi would technically be a movie of lesser importance and if it failed at the cinema it would be a minor loss, risk that marvel doesn't want to have Eternals, which is more expected. Then the actor wanted to defend his and the team's work because it has as much value as the other productions. When I saw the post I understood like this, idk...

I agree Simu's response was out of context but to suggest he just 'stay quiet' reinforces that expectation that Asians stay in their own lane and don't speak for themselves. IMO the word 'experiment' was not a great choice and triggered something with Simu. Given his current position both within the Asian community and outside, representing the community. Honestly the awkwafina thing is very interesting. I think that very early on in her career she played up her own identity as someone who lives in an area that has a particular accent. I think that she played it up for comedy and in that way using a "blaccent" to gain popularity which is not ok.But I think now that she's getting more popularity she's lessened it to degree of more what her normal conversational accent would be like. The reason I think this is because watching her in the movie "The farewell" ( the movie was good imo) I could tell she sounded like someone from New York. it didn't sound like her accent had changed that much but it changed enough to where I noticed. It reminds me a lot of how Miley Cyrus used to" play Black" until it was seen as not a good thing and had a" epiphany "and shed her black cloak to go back to her " country roots". I think Miley cyrus was much worse tho. Awkwafina isnt trying to identify herself as black for popularity but she did play up a part of her identity using a "blaccent" as a way to gain popularity in comedy in a way making black people the butt of her jokes (IN A WAY). On the other hand she sort of moved away from it and I don't want to ruin the potential profit of a great film that has a lot of necessary representation because of the intersectional dynamic of an Asian-American woman growing up in a large Metropolitan City and developing an accent based on the area she's from and playing that identity up to rise in fame. The “experiment” that Simu Liu was criticizing does have a valid point. Shang Chi is coming out pretty much after Black Widow, which aired on Disney+ almost immediately after they screened it on the big screen. (like a day after or within days) ScarJo sued Disney because this “violated her contract.” Disney had originally agreed to only show Black Widow on the big screen bc they contracted it all before the pandemic, but because of the pandemic and the potential lack of people going into theaters as a result, Disney immediately aired the movie on Disney+, supposedly undercutting ScarJo’s earnings. This is what made Disney’s decision to experiment with Shang Chi so hypocritical to me. Like what’s the reason of experimenting with Shang Chi when Black Widow had just come out still during the pandemic with rising cases of the delta variant, and they didn’t expect people to go out to theaters to watch it and aired it anyways. That’s why I think Simu Liu’s commentary is valid
I'm not sure where she's from but from what I've seen some of her backlash is coming from the fact people are saying the area she grew up in was not predominantly black like she said. That's something that I haven't seen proven tho, but even if she did grow up in a predominantly black area, some people feel as if it isn't genuine.
I grew up in an area where there weren't many black people, rarely any white people, but the people spoke with slang and what not. If white people heard us talk, they'd say "why do you talk like you're black"?

This forced combination of languages during slavery evolved into a Creole that later became what we hear from most black people today. These features are also very easily found in multiple west african creoles around the world. A speaker of aave would have an easier time understanding someone who speaks patois or swahili than they ever would gaelic. People only want to say aave was heavily influenced by another group when trying to justify the 'Blackcent' other non-black people put on to seem cool or gain popularity.
We are products of our environments. An in some environments, people feel the need to poorly imitate a culture they are not directly apart of. There is a marked difference between how Awkwafina speaks and how a person who actually grew up in that environment speaks. Most black people can hear it in her voice, the same way they can tell when a non-black person is attempting to use certain slang words or gestures to try an 'relate' to them. Her accent was never meant to be taken seriously and is only now a large topic of discussion because her imitation of stereotypical blackness has sky-rocketed her career. Even her stage name was not meant to be taken seriously. It is an open joke so many non-black people make about how black parents name their children, particularly black parents in deprived areas. I'm minoring in linguistics and this subject in regards to aave is so interesting to me. So many people try to imitate the vernacular, but like Awkwafina, do not fully understand the grammar, phonology, sentence structure or verbal interactions enough to fully convince the people they are imitating.

I think most people against Awkwafina is claiming that she grew up in the Forest Hills neighborhood in Queens, which is predominately Russian Jewish and Asian. Source: I grew up in Forest Hills. However, for all anybody knows, she could have just hung out with black people, and picked up the speech from her friends. Nobody really knows her circumstances so the judging is moot.

the thing with awkafina is that queens does not equal black. There are a LOT of asian people in queens in fact she grew up in forest hills which is a pretty affluent neighborhood that barely has black people in it. Not saying all black people live in poverty but i want people to stop assuming that just because you grew up in "queens" means that you are somehow "hood" and therefore been around black people. it doesnt make sense to me when there are areas like Bayside and Forest Hills which are some of the bougiest places to live that barely have a black population. Im sure she is a nice girl and i think she is a great actress but its just annoying how people with upper middle class backgrounds adopt black people's vernacular when they are trying to stand out and be edgy and cool. But throw it away once they get older and want to be taken more serious. I grew up in Jamaica Queens but I'll say this: more people, especially POC, have stronger ties to Black mainstream than white mainstream. POCs relate more to "the struggle" of trying to make it in America while looking different. On top of that, if everyone around you act and talk a certain way than that's just what you adopt. Bayside is one thing, but Forest Hills although mostly affluent, is in the middle between Jamaica and Elmhurst. So what makes you think people in Forest Hills can't pick up the language of their surrounding areas? It is easy to move around in NYC (especially Queens), afterall.

I think the main issue was Awkwafina was that she said she didn't want to do an Asian voice because she felt like it would seem minstrel. Perhaps she really can't speak with an Asian accent without making it really sounding offensive to other Asians. I do agree that the blaccent is just a product of her environment. I find Asians with English, Australian, Scottish accents sound odd, but I am reminded that is just how they grew up speaking like. I just think cancel culture is getting way out of control and people are just butt hurt over everything and want to lash out at others.

I’m just pointing out the argument that David is making against these comedians can also be said about Bart and Joe. For a period of like 2 years, the Asian accent was the main joke in JK’s old skits. So if he’s gonna bash other content creators for using the accent as a crutch, then he should hold that same energy for Bart and Joe.
Idk if it matters necessarily but Bob Chapek is the CEO that made that comment on Shang Chi. To steel man Simu's response I think he may have felt that Chapek's comment did not represent the value he placed on the film. To Simu this film probably is more than just a vehicle for Disney to use as an experiment to gauge their potential to make money. I would still push back and say that it is not everyone's responsibility to address the significance of the movie. You do need the money guys that are going to be looking for the success of the product along with the more visionary guys that are looking at the quality and significance of the product. I think this CEO is fine talking about how this is a box office experiment and Simu if he wants the value he places on the film to get out can himself promote that without going at people he works for. The response is devisive imo and if you dont want to turn people off seeing your movie it's not the way to go especially when the initial comment wasn't bad at all really tho did get people talking about it so I could be wrong. All that said Shang Chi was awesome and seems to have had a successful weekend already.

What is frustrating, as a Black woman, is those accused of using a "blaccent" never sound like the Black people I know. It is always this version of how people see Black people. It is offensive because people think that is how we sound and then they say "I grew up around Black people". Where?! The Black people I know sound similar to you and your friends contributing to this podcast. I remember being told numerous times as a child how articulate I am. Drives me crazy that people really think most Black people speak like the character Awkwafina, especially when the person who developed the character is Nora from I believe Stony Brook, NY. Sidenote: I think she did a wonderful job in Shang Chi and there was no exaggerated speech from her character.
Her career was built off of black people/black culture. She even decided to go by the name awkwafina which comes from a joke someone made on the way black people name their children.
5-10 years ago.. movies came out, made money, then after 3-6 weeks moved onto the budget / dollar cinemas and then in 6-12 months would be on DVD. This 'experiment' is merely rolling back the 6-12 month 'dvd' release into a 6 weeks later INSTEAD of the budget/dollar cinemas, it also is released digitally. It makes sense and is a balanced approach.

25:25 the way I interpreted that quote, "We're not an experiment", was that I'm pretty sure that Disney executive thought that the movie was going to fail, because right now is like, the HEIGHT of the pandemic, but Disney still choose to have a theatrical only reason until 45 days pass. Another part from that statement Simu made was that they (the cast and the movie) were the underdog. And it's not like Disney as a company hasn't done this before; Treasure Planet fucking bombed when it first came out because they thought it wouldn't be successful, and so they didn't spend as much time marketing it.

peoples accents change when they get older....my nyc accent was heavy in HS and it wasnt till i got to college and met people who are not from nyc did i even kno i had an accent. To address why Shang Chi is facing difficulty being released in China: it has almost nothing to do with Simu’s reaction to comments calling him ugly, but rather entirely to do with the racial stereotypes associated with the character’s origins. Additionally, the CCP also draws issue with two Chinese characters (Shang Chi and his father) being played by a Canadian and a Hongkonger. Just a bit of context for the conversation here!

so actually on the whole awkwafina thing I got schooled on by my homegirl. The argument is that Awkwafina grew up in a middle-class spot in queens and went to a prestigious art school. There are articles even pointed out that her neighborhood consisted only 2% of black the rest were asian and white. The other issue was that Nora developed the character awkwafina when she was 16.

I agree with you. It does annoy me that some people speak a certain way try to imitate a particular speech pattern to their own ends. Not only have I grown up speaking that way my whole life, but with a focus on linguistics in college I can definitely tell that's not how she talks. Awkwafinas aave speech pattern is common among a lot of people who imitate the vernacular to the best of their ability. It's a combination of New York, Baltimore, Houston, and Long Beach with a little bit of Atlanta thrown in. That's what happens when you group all black entertainers together and form speech patterns from them as a collective, rather than realizing they all have separate, regional accents. When speaking that way she often sounds like she needs to cough, and her gestures are far too exaggerated. She also sound perpetually irritated or sassy which is common among imitators since most of them associate aave with aggressiveness or attitudes. Now if she grew up speaking that way, why is her grammar, sentence structure, slang, annunciation and phonology all over the place? There would be a base aave accent that she always returns to as a result of her regional upbringing, and it's just... not there.

1) the way David's signature fighting move is to make someone his bitch 2) with the awkwafina thing I used to defend it too until I learned that she didn't even grow up in the Bronx. She was on the more affluent west side. Which isn't a problem until I noticed that she stopped using 'the voice' as she got more prominent roles, so it felt like an act and she said herself that she used to play it up because it made her feel more confident. While I don't take a big issue with it in her case because it's a minor example, it's still a bit annoying because so many people in Hollywood and influencers get big on this "I'm black but I'm not" thing and many times when it's no longer profiting them they stop doing it. It's cute and funny to be loud and sassy until a black person does it, then it's our entire being or we're ghetto. If awkwafina stayed awkwafina 24/7 instead of "oh no Nora and awkwafina are separate people" I don't think she'd catch flack. And I'm not saying like she can't have a screen persona or a personal life, but if you have to play up traditionally black things, maybe you're being a bit inauthentic. Same goes for Offset, nigga grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta.
Edit: I'm not saying that this applies to all non black folk with traditionally black accents, as someone who "talks white" I know how annoying it is to be accused of "talking a color" when you're just out here talking. But when it is conditional, that's when it get problematic. It is also exasperated because of the anti-blackness in the Asian community so it feels like more of a f u to mom and dad in a costume like way, than genuine self expression.

Yeah I don't understand how these guys ignore these facts that were pointed out. The problem was that she was faking an accent that is most recognizable from African Americans. Nobody said( at least I think) that Asian Americans can't have an accent. It is possible but you have to look at statistics rather than assume that out of thin air an Asian American will pop up with a thick ass southern accent. That possibility is pretty low.
I remember a video going around on Twitter of an Asian woman who has a blaccent and speaks AAVE and people did draw analogies with her and Awkwafina because the woman was speaking as she genuinely does. It wasn’t an act or anything to be profited from. I too “talk white” and code switch, so I get that people can talk certain ways that may not be the norm for their demographic, but with Awkwafina, it just seems like I’m watching a minstrel show.

Yeah I think Simu probably reacted badly to the statement cause to him it feels like Disney shoved his film in the worst release strategy possible right now. Also it’s not like Simu said “We Asians aren’t an experiment”, where instead he was talking about all of the months of the efforts of the movie cast and crew being singled down to an “experiment” which was poorly worded by Bob chapek.
I don't know... But the Simu segment seems to be an over reaction of a over reaction. People are allowed to make mistakes, whether a disservice or not. He has the platform now so let's see what he does with it.

I agree Simu's response was out of context but to suggest he just 'stay quiet' reinforces that expectation that Asians stay in their own lane and don't speak for themselves. IMO the word 'experiment' was not a great choice and triggered something with Simu. Given his current position both within the Asian community and outside, representing the community. There's no right and wrong really, just got blown out of proportion.

Honestly the awkwafina thing is very interesting. I think that very early on in her career she played up her own identity as someone who lives in an area that has a particular accent. I think that she played it up for comedy and in that way using a "blaccent" to gain popularity which is not ok.But I think now that she's getting more popularity she's lessened it to degree of more what her normal conversational accent would be like. The reason I think this is because watching her in the movie "The farewell" ( the movie was good imo) I could tell she sounded like someone from New York. it didn't sound like her accent had changed that much but it changed enough to where I noticed. It reminds me a lot of how Miley Cyrus used to" play Black" until it was seen as not a good thing and had a" epiphany "and shed her black cloak to go back to her " country roots". I think Miley cyrus was much worse tho. Awkwafina isnt trying to identify herself as black for popularity but she did play up a part of her identity using a "blaccent" as a way to gain popularity in comedy in a way making black people the butt of her jokes (IN A WAY). On the other hand she sort of moved away from it and I don't want to ruin the potential profit of a great film that has a lot of necessary representation because of the intersectional dynamic of an Asian-American woman growing up in a large Metropolitan City and developing an accent based on the area she's from and playing that identity up to rise in fame. The “experiment” that Simu Liu was criticizing does have a valid point. Shang Chi is coming out pretty much after Black Widow, which aired on Disney+ almost immediately after they screened it on the big screen. (like a day after or within days) ScarJo sued Disney because this “violated her contract.” Disney had originally agreed to only show Black Widow on the big screen bc they contracted it all before the pandemic, but because of the pandemic and the potential lack of people going into theaters as a result, Disney immediately aired the movie on Disney+, supposedly undercutting ScarJo’s earnings. This is what made Disney’s decision to experiment with Shang Chi so hypocritical to me. Like what’s the reason of experimenting with Shang Chi when Black Widow had just come out still during the pandemic with rising cases of the delta variant, and they didn’t expect people to go out to theaters to watch it and aired it anyways. That’s why I think Simu Liu’s commentary is valid

I'm not sure where she's from but from what I've seen some of her backlash is coming from the fact people are saying the area she grew up in was not predominantly black like she said. That's something that I haven't seen proven tho, but even if she did grow up in a predominantly black area, some people feel as if it isn't genuine.
I grew up in an area where there weren't many black people, rarely any white people, but the people spoke with slang and what not. If white people heard us talk, they'd say "why do you talk like you're black"?

This forced combination of languages during slavery evolved into a Creole that later became what we hear from most black people today. These features are also very easily found in multiple west african creoles around the world. A speaker of aave would have an easier time understanding someone who speaks patois or swahili than they ever would gaelic. People only want to say aave was heavily influenced by another group when trying to justify the 'Blackcent' other non-black people put on to seem cool or gain popularity.
We are products of our environments. An in some environments, people feel the need to poorly imitate a culture they are not directly apart of. There is a marked difference between how Awkwafina speaks and how a person who actually grew up in that environment speaks. Most black people can hear it in her voice, the same way they can tell when a non-black person is attempting to use certain slang words or gestures to try an 'relate' to them. Her accent was never meant to be taken seriously and is only now a large topic of discussion because her imitation of stereotypical blackness has sky-rocketed her career. Even her stage name was not meant to be taken seriously. It is an open joke so many non-black people make about how black parents name their children, particularly black parents in deprived areas. I'm minoring in linguistics and this subject in regards to aave is so interesting to me. So many people try to imitate the vernacular, but like Awkwafina, do not fully understand the grammar, phonology, sentence structure or verbal interactions enough to fully convince the people they are imitating.

I think most people against Awkwafina is claiming that she grew up in the Forest Hills neighborhood in Queens, which is predominately Russian Jewish and Asian. Source: I grew up in Forest Hills. However, for all anybody knows, she could have just hung out with black people, and picked up the speech from her friends. Nobody really knows her circumstances so the judging is moot.

the thing with awkafina is that queens does not equal black. There are a LOT of asian people in queens in fact she grew up in forest hills which is a pretty affluent neighborhood that barely has black people in it. Not saying all black people live in poverty but i want people to stop assuming that just because you grew up in "queens" means that you are somehow "hood" and therefore been around black people. it doesnt make sense to me when there are areas like Bayside and Forest Hills which are some of the bougiest places to live that barely have a black population. Im sure she is a nice girl and i think she is a great actress but its just annoying how people with upper middle class backgrounds adopt black people's vernacular when they are trying to stand out and be edgy and cool. But throw it away once they get older and want to be taken more serious. Also AAVE is a language even though people might not think that it is IT IS so like any language when someone who doesnt speak it natively speaks it you can always tell it isnt their native tongue which is why black people stay clocking her because it just sounds....off. It does make me sad in a wahy that she felt the need to do that in order to stand out because she is very talented! I hope she gets to show more of her true self in the future.
I grew up in Jamaica Queens but I'll say this: more people, especially POC, have stronger ties to Black mainstream than white mainstream. POCs relate more to "the struggle" of trying to make it in America while looking different. On top of that, if everyone around you act and talk a certain way than that's just what you adopt. Bayside is one thing, but Forest Hills although mostly affluent, is in the middle between Jamaica and Elmhurst. So what makes you think people in Forest Hills can't pick up the language of their surrounding areas? It is easy to move around in NYC (especially Queens), afterall.

I think the main issue was Awkwafina was that she said she didn't want to do an Asian voice because she felt like it would seem minstrel. Perhaps she really can't speak with an Asian accent without making it really sounding offensive to other Asians. I do agree that the blaccent is just a product of her environment. I find Asians with English, Australian, Scottish accents sound odd, but I am reminded that is just how they grew up speaking like. I just think cancel culture is getting way out of control and people are just butt hurt over everything and want to lash out at others.

Iger handed over the reigns to Chapek about a year ago, and they both are on the opposite ends when it comes to running the business. Iger always championed the talent, champion the project, and that’s how he made disney the Mouse King it became in the past decade.
However, when Chapek took over, his style of running things are very strict old school corporate style, the numbers kinda guy, which of course, nothing wrong with that.
With that being said, 1 number they’re looking at is disney+ subscription numbers and all those premier access movies they wanna throw up there with covid to battle the horrible box office numbers. Again nothing wrong with that.
Nothing wrong so far, i get it, it’s a business at the end of the day, and streaming is the future.
Now the shit hit the fan when scarjo sued disney for breaching her contract. She was very professional about it and all, according to all the news out so far, disney has been the one dealing in bad faith.
They did a new contract for rock and gang for jungle cruise when they threw it up there on disney+. Cos you know, he’s the rock, yadda yadda yadda.
But they did scarjo dirty when it came to hers, she’s 1 of the 6 key founding avengers members, the first female superhero in mcu, and they practically ignore her inquiries for an updated contract since they changed the terms of her original contract that said the movie would be theatrical release only but then ended up tossing in on disney+ as well.
Now, with all that being said, they had to handle the backlash some how right? So the new ceo Chapek released a statement saying that they will keep shang chi on theatrical release only on their new 45 days theatrical release period. He basically called this the experiment, not shang chi. Nothing wrong there. He just could have said it nicer, especially with this movie coming out, it’s an important movie, especially for the asian community representation. You could’ve boost it a bit nicer.
Look at any Kevin feige or bob iger comment about the release of any movie, they always championed the talent, championed the project. Dude this is business 101.
But dude, come on, you’re the ceo of the biggest movie studio company in the market right now. Though chapek basically said what he said about his expectations of the movie in the most default way, and most probably, if not, at all, didnt mean any ill thoughts towards the shangchi, t doesn’t generate any good press for the film if you call it an “experiment”, for whatever reason, it doesn’t matter, just doesnt sound good. Idk if it matters necessarily but Bob Chapek is the CEO that made that comment on Shang Chi. To steel man Simu's response I think he may have felt that Chapek's comment did not represent the value he placed on the film. To Simu this film probably is more than just a vehicle for Disney to use as an experiment to gauge their potential to make money. I would still push back and say that it is not everyone's responsibility to address the significance of the movie. You do need the money guys that are going to be looking for the success of the product along with the more visionary guys that are looking at the quality and significance of the product. I think this CEO is fine talking about how this is a box office experiment and Simu if he wants the value he places on the film to get out can himself promote that without going at people he works for. The response is devisive imo and if you dont want to turn people off seeing your movie it's not the way to go especially when the initial comment wasn't bad at all really tho did get people talking about it so I could be wrong. All that said Shang Chi was awesome and seems to have had a successful weekend already.

What is frustrating, as a Black woman, is those accused of using a "blaccent" never sound like the Black people I know. It is always this version of how people see Black people. It is offensive because people think that is how we sound and then they say "I grew up around Black people". Where?! The Black people I know sound similar to you and your friends contributing to this podcast. I remember being told numerous times as a child how articulate I am. Drives me crazy that people really think most Black people speak like the character Awkwafina, especially when the person who developed the character is Nora from I believe Stony Brook, NY.
Sidenote: I think she did a wonderful job in Shang Chi and there was no exaggerated speech from her character.

5-10 years ago.. movies came out, made money, then after 3-6 weeks moved onto the budget / dollar cinemas and then in 6-12 months would be on DVD. This 'experiment' is merely rolling back the 6-12 month 'dvd' release into a 6 weeks later INSTEAD of the budget/dollar cinemas, it also is released digitally. It makes sense and is a balanced approach.
