I wonder if he has a photographic memory. He seems to remember a lot of small things. He may even just be a savant.
There are certain exercises that even average people do on a daily basis that improves cognitive function. Constantly reading, memorizing songs. Saying something verbally and associating it with an image improves memory. You may not even notice because your memory will start to flow naturally. I don't have a complete eidetic memory, nor am I anywhere near the best, but I have been told to have a rather gifted one. My earliest memories are before I was 1 year old. The small things are sometimes easier to remember then the larger things. You just have to care or you'll have visual and auditory cues that tie something to another. I was very talkative when I was younger and that helps.

Even though questions were easier back then, knowing everything he did shows he's a well rounded person. Sports, Movies, Architecture, History, Art, Gadgets, Mythology. He may not be Ken Jennings but he's clearly a guy who listens to the world around him beyond his own interests.
I think he has said he was happy to fall out of celebrity status but part of me thinks if he had wanted to go for public office like Senator or Governor he'd have done very very well. He's cocky but in a very likeable way, a down to earth smart guy.

All of those that keep commenting everywhere about the questions being easy, they would never have gotten to the chair, which is one of the most difficult questions and it is TIMED.
If this was conducted by Indian TV channels then they would have taken at least a week to go to the question for a million.

This was a Champions special edition show. All contestants here were previous high winners. There was a half-charity rule, half of John winnings here went to his chosen charity.
This also proves his first win wasn't just "easy questions", he's very well rounded in his knowledge, but yes he went on at just the right time to get easy questions when they wanted a millionaire.
In the Tomagachi question it's like he's pulling out a file from his head and reads it. Quite fascinating really.

I love how people are like "Oh I knew all the answers, it's not that impressive." Yeah. You know all the answers because when you want to look up something - you just grab your phone and look it up. That wasn't a thing you could do during the time this episode aired. You know because the information is more easily available and accessible for you, unlike when John grew up. Meaning that the guy is just that smart - without the aide of today's technology.
Because let me tell you, I wouldn't know nearly as much as I do if I couldn't just look it up when I am thinking of it, because I would forget by the time I actually got to a computer to get on the internet and look it up, which is presumably what John had to do - or he read it in books at the library or elsewhere.
This man is the encyclopedia of American culture.
