- All of the winners of the British TV show Who wants to be a Millionaire, hosted by Chris Tarrant.
The first winner was Judith (Cynthia Aline) Keppel of Fullham, who won her fortune on November 20th 2000 at age 58.
The second winner was David Edwards who won his fortune on April 21st 2001 aged 53/54
The Third legitimate winner of the show was Robert Brydges who won his £1,000,000 at aged 47 on the 29th September 2001. His win caused controversy on the show as he already had quite a lot of money to begin with.
The Fourth winner of Who wants to be a Millionaire was Pat Gibson. He won his Million on the 24th April 2004 at age 43. He has went on to be a multiple world champion in quizzing. He was the youngest person on the UK show to win £1 Million.
The fifth and final winner of £1 Million in the UK series was Ingram Wilcox, who won the shows final £1,000,000 on the 23rd September 2006, aged 72 making him the oldest person on the show to win £1 Million.
Charles Ingram also got £1 Million, however he was part of a 3-man scandal. Himself, his wife Diana, and his friend Tecwan Whittock banded together to ensure that he would win the infamous prize of £1,000,000, by coughing when he said the correct answer to the questions. He did get to a Million, however officials looking at the footage soon discovered their act, the episode was removed from rotation and they were never able to cash the cheque. This was on 18th September 2001, Charles Ingram was 38 at the time of the scandal, if he had succeeded he would have been the youngest contestant to win the show.

Had Charles Ingram and his two accomplices (his wife Diana and former college lecturer Tecwen Whittock) stopped at about the £250,000 question, they probably would have gotten away with it. Just shows that greed will imprison us all in the end.
wt8012 Absolutely true. On the documentary they did on him (available on TH-cam called “Major Fraud”) they said things seemed okay-ish at around that mark of £250,000 with some concerns. However the final few answers he gave were ridiculously questionable as he kept going over and over them without any sort of logic.
Yeah they picked up on it around the last 2 questions, he coulda walked with £250,000 and no one would have paid much attention.

I like Robert Brydges. It's one of the few where he wasn't sure and hadn't made reference to reading/knowing about it and pretty much went for it on a toss of a coin and won. Balls

Was thinking that myself, but according to Ariely et al. "Large Stakes and Big Mistakes", this much pressure can make you doubt everything you know and severely hinder your performance, which is why most winners are very calm I would guess.. I think most people who go up to 32k would be perfectly able to answer the following questions if they were for 100£/€/$.. But the pressure makes you question yourself so much that you end up saying the wrong answer when you know the right one.. If anyone is interested, I recommend that paper by Ariely et al. it's a very interesting read..

C D Charles Ingram had his staged to where when he would go over the correct answer to a question, certain people would fake cough so he would get higher amounts of money to questions he was unsure of. He had his money revoked shortly after the episode aired due to this

Judith's question was mega easy compared to what one would expect for a one million quid question
The Judith Keppel one was broadcast at the same time as the final ever episode of One Foot In The Grave, I remember it well. There was something very convenient about it I have to say. If you've seen her displays on Eggheads since, with the greatest of respect to her, you'd be rightly unconvinced by her reaching the million.

Pretty funny how millions questions would be easier in other countries. We learned the latin names for trees and plants. And quercus is Eiche, cause it resembles the German toughness. The Volt question is also fairly easy for someone who has been to school.
Thats wjy theyre final questions in the UK then. Cos they're difficult for someone from the UK. The horse race question would probably be a 5k question in the US because it's in more common knowledge

Volt for £1m is a bit of a joke, no? 2 names are German and one French. Even if you have no clue, the answer is obvious.
Also note that the explosion of the internet in the last 2 decades has made questions way harder now than they were back then.
