What an experience to have your tanks befouled. So glad you were near such stellar services to handle it all. Smooth sailing for the rest of your travels please

Yes, the Balearics are amazing for boat services. Not inexpensive but absolutely the best we've found anywhere. They even show up when they say they will, which is truly a one of a kind experience with boat services

Holy moley that’s some gunk build up. Lucky you caught it early. Why we never use marina diesel. We get 20L canisters from fuel station for filling up. Once we got a 20l from the marina tank to have as backup. Didn’t use it, end of season gave to dad for his tractor, he didn’t use it for the while then went to use it. Pure goop, thankfully he had a strainer so nothing got in the tractor tank.

The funny thing is that we've filled up in very sketchy places without issue. First time we run into it is back in "civilization".

Is there no additive which will stop the bacteria, while not ruining the fuel? Also, how long before the growth resumes?

There is additives that can be used and we've now treated our tanks here in Tunisia. In the past we had used our diesel rapidly so growth wasn't an issue but we got into a habit of using the port tank for the most part as we are a bit heavy on that side. Refrigeration and hot water tank is all to port so a full starboard tank tends to balance us. Won't make that mistake again! Also, the last time we filled up in Spain we got diesel with water in it. So that was the issue that really had gotten our attention. Regarding how long it takes to get fouled, that can vary. Typically if you're not using it for a few months you need to treat it.
Anyway, glad it's all good now. Thanks for watching and for the comment
