HI Oleg, and thanks for watching! I think the confusion arose when I said the words “A natural.” I wasn’t intending to refer to “A natural MINOR,” but was attempting rather to distinguish between the Ab major scale and the A major scale. When I said “A natural” I was talking about the A major scale (as opposed to the Ab major scale). Hope that makes sense :)
I think I understand now. In the context of what I was asking in the video there, only the major scales are options for determining how to spell C Phrygian as we consider it to be mode 3 of something else. It is mode three of some parent MAJOR scale. Minors are not options, as they themselves are mode 6 of a parent major scale. The major scale is the parent, because we numbered it 1. If we are looking for mode 3 Phrygian, we have to look at it’s own number 1 which was some major scale.
Hello and thank you for a good lesson on modes. Could I please clarify one thing you mention @ 4:04 - is it "A flat" and not "A natural minor" because "A natural minor" is not a "key" but a "Aeolian mode" (implying that we were searching for a matching "key" = Ionian) ?
Hello, thank you for the reply! I did understand you meant A major scale :) but still, the question was "What key has the note C natural?". And I would answer "A natural Minor" (probably incorrectly, but I am trying to understand why). My thinking is - because "C natural" of "C Phrygian Mode" is 3rd degree of "A natural minor". That's why I assumed that my answer is wrong and "A Flat" is correct, because "A natural Minor" is not a "Key", but "Aeolian Mode" instead. What am I missing? :)
That's it! :) That clears it up, thank you.
