- Deep in the beautiful Blue Mountains of Jamaica lie the Maroon communities, a unique group of people in Jamaica's history. These are the descendants of escaped slaves who formed militias and outposts in the mountains to guard their freedom. Because of this, an African language, Kromanti, managed to survive for almost 400 years, but it may be on the verge of extinction. I decided I would rent a car in Kingston and go driving through the mountains to Moore Town, a a Maroon settlement that was rumored to have the last speakers of the language. Thankfully, I met someone who was more than happy to show me around - with a machete.
#sabbatical #jamaica #caribbean
This video took forever to make but it was worth it! Enjoy, I originally planned for this to be the last one from Jamaica but there may be one more on the way. Bless
What do you use to learn different languages⁉️
God bless in your travels and have a merry Christmas!
Yay!! Been waiting for a new video from you!!
Big up yuh self ♥️💪🏾
Can we get some uptown Kingston footage
I spent a couple of weeks in a small fishing village in Jamaica after my divorce, it was so refreshing to slow down and just be there. The people were unbelievably friendly and helpful. I want to bring my boys there someday. My friend built herself a treehouse there! The resorts don’t do Jamaica justice. Stay away from the resorts and you have 1000x more fun!
Man that guy who lead you through the jungle is golden.
shootout
Shootout! Made the vlog so much better .. He’s the real example of a Jamaican we are peaceful & welcoming until you mess with us! Makes me miss my family 🇯🇲 back home 🙏🏽
Not only do you possess an amazing ability for picking up languages very quickly, you always manage to find THE nicest people to show you around! Thanks for introducing Shootout to us, Tommy. He seems like an absolute legend.

This actually bring tears to my eyes to know that there are still good people left in the world and I love my country no matter what.
Tommy brings out the best in every one.

Shootout is such a good person, it felt like you where talking to an old friend, so pure and humble guy
In the Spirit of Jamaica, Shootout tours his rural ‘backyard’ with you ~ discovering plants…vegetables…fruits ~ you struck Gold, Tommy!👍❤☺️
Everyone in the world must visit Jamaica atleast once in their life. You will be reborn upon your visit. Out of many one people 🇯🇲!
I've been about 12 times. 💃
lucky me, I'm having a 2 year vacation in Jamaica
Man, Tommy. You managed to find an awesome, gem of a guy who was 60 years old and took you on a day long tour in the heart of Jamaica for the hell of it; for the adventure. He was keeping better pace than you!
Beautiful, hope Shootout is doing alright and you continue to have these kinds of amazing interactions in your travels.
You basically took the words right outta my mouth. I'd love to spend the day with shootout and just hangout and stuff lol
he said he was 60 but also said he had a son who was 50
I’m from ireland and I had no idea about the Irish influence on Jamaica !! Thanks for sharing ! Hello to my Irish-Jamaican distant cousins !
I`m from Irish economic migrants to Scotland in 1730, so I say hello too. I felt at home watching the vid of the beautiful place with its beautiful people.
You might be surprised to know how many decendants your family do have in Jamaica.
Big up! We pronounce some words the exact same way.
Trench town is name after a man from Mayo (I think Mayo)
I see a real similarity between some of the Jamaicans from the country side to the Irish and English from similar rural areas. Polite to a fault. A love of the land. And a bit of divilment and cheeky fun about them too.
Tom happens to always find the right man who's known by everyone and whom nobody's can mess with. That's so impressive! Shootout is such an amazing person and a walking heritage! This episode had a very documentary feeling on it thanks to that interaction with him. I loved it!
Shout out to Shootout. What a wholesome dude. You meet so cool people everywhere you go. Thank you for giving us the chance to meet them through your videos as well!
I'm trying to find out which African tribe my friend is from he has a Jamaican back ground
dude had a kid at 10 years old?
He has great spirit, so he attacked like people
@@guwop2234 Lol! I think that´s just Jamaicans they´re not too accurate about age etc or sometimes mislead people for fun. I remember asking my dad how old he was (Jamaican too) and he´d always say 25 even after I passed 25 years old..haha!

This is gold my friend! A lot of people don't know this history.

Years ago in college I was fortunate to have a statistics professor from Jamaica 🇯🇲. At first I wondered why he was so strict grading my work particularly, so one day after lectures I waited to speak with him to find out what the problem was. He then proceeded to share with me the Maroon folks from Ghana, where I was raised and I was blown away at how the culture was preserved inspite of all they were put through. As always your series are educational and very informative amongst the many travel vlogs.
Thanks for sharing the series on Jamaica and its definitely renewed my interest in visiting the Island.
Yea u should 🇯🇲🇯🇲
Much love . We're one 🇯🇲🇳🇬
Tommy, I told you my countrymen gonna take care of you. Shootout is a typical Jamaican dude, friendly ,welcoming and kind. That grand tour was great. He spoke super quick as many people from the rural parts of Jamaica do and yes it's tough to follow for a foreigner. That's why ua Jamaicans living in the US use patois ( slower than shootouts but effective in a typical US work environment) to speak in code. You would be there guessing..lol. re the chocolate ( cocoa)he gave you at 40:05 , you simply sucked on the pulp. The hard thing you spat out IS what is used uo make the chocolate. You should try and drink the Chocolate tea/hot beverage , it's also awesome. Seeing my homeland is giving me nostalgia Tommy. I was just there in October but the visit was too short. My bornland is stunning to look at, and I am glad you are enjoying it. I know You are not the youtuber who showcases the high life but many of your viewers sadly will never see the stunning mansions in Jamaica as that's not your thing. But it wouid at least let them see a balance of the rural lifestyle and the regular Joe as well as the trendy side of Jamaica. Many visitors only see the hotels and Dunns River falls but that island and all its 14 parishes has so much to see. Whatever you showcase I appreciate.i would wish you could go up to Red Hills or Smokey Vale ( or any other mansion crested hill in Kingston and St Andrew and pan your camera down on Kingston and the Harbour, it's a stunning view from that altitude. Tommy I hope to meet you along your journeys one day. Imagine that same island has the current fastest man and women alive. Bless up and One Love Tommy!
Big up yourself!
Well said idren!
gush much?
@@johnjohnson6327 does that make you feel better about yourself?!
ANOTHER ONE from Tommy!
What a video! I now understand why the British loved Jamaica and held on to it dearly. It is a real tropical paradise. As you said, there is no proble of food there because the place is so so fertile. The waterfalls looked amazing. Just like a paradise on earth. I saw you edited some other swimmers behind you.
What a character SHOOTOUT is! He is a great caring man inside that tough talking. Unfortunately, like all black fathers in Jamaica and Africa, our kids who get a chance to fly out to study and work abroad, always prefer to arrange for their mothers to join them there leaving the old men behind. This has led to many family break ups and sometimes, the men start a new life with another woman.
Economis conditions forces the locals to head to the west to earn a living, while the westerners like you are loving the paradise the locals leave behind for life in the cold unfriendly Europe and North America.
Keep up the good work Tommy and we all look forward to the South American adventures.
Much love from Nairobi, KENYA
It is great to learn about the Maroon people and their history. Too bad the original langauge has been assimlated and died off.
This is exactly what you get when you come to the carribean and you can connect with the average person. You get the real truth, you can't get this from the tourist board or no Government department. I am from the carribean and this video makes me feel good about being from here, we have different cultures but we are more the same than we really think
So true. There is always one basic human trait in any culture. Love.
I had total faith you would do a 'African language' vlog in Jamaica!!!! This was great, I totally teared up a few times. Love ShootOut, and know his kids will see this and there will be a happy reunion. He is now a legend!!!! Thanks for a great great episode, one love!
Shootout was so cool and on another level, he gives off a real shaman/spiritual vibe. All these maroon people seem to still be connected to nature and carry a deep african history within them.
These are the kind of vids I like the most. Just exploring the back country and spending time with the locals. No touristy stuff. Great job, kept me engrossed. I usually don't last 48 minutes watching unless it's something that captures my interests. Real surprised that Shooter wouldn't take a few bucks for spending a whole day walking you around and giving you a tour.
check out sailing sv delos from like 8 years ago, that was a great series,
its still good now but more fam orientated
You can tell Shooter is an OG. Lives by respect, awesome experience. Keep the high beams on and honk on corners bro. When driving by night even if you see lights, hit that horn, I learned it from driving in Trinidad and tabago.
Hi Tommy,
Great series you have here. At 24:43 you said that you didn't understand what Shootout was saying.
He was offering you protection! He said that if you come to that place and any young man approach you, you should call his name, and they will leave you alone.
That's really interesting to know that they want to learn the Twi language .... You doing a great job Sabbatical... LOVE FROM GHANA
I'm dying to learn lol. Thanks much.🇯🇲
Fanti & Twi are pretty close, no ? Are they mutually intelligible ?
@@talktruth4145 lol I speak fante and twi I can teach you 😀
@@miahconnell23 yes they are pretty close. The fante's can understand twi perfectly but it's a bit hard for the Ashante's to grasp the fante language
@@alpha_vision that’s simply because twi is more popular in Ghana than fanti. Fantes get to communicate in twi more than Ashanti’s get to communicate in fanti. So definitely the Ashanti’s will struggle with the fanti more.
It's crazy black how people are the same it doesn't matter whether if they are jamaïcains, from any of the 54 country of the african continental that's exactly how they will treat like this nice man, Shoutout from jamaïca. Tommy you are a luky man to discover our genuine kindness. Whenever they sound hard and mean it's only because of the people who have taken advange of us but as a whole we are a good people. Out of the hundreds of travel vlog videos I’ve seen from several channels, this has to be the most wholesome , educational, and enjoyable one ive seen yet ! Just made me realize why I love my Jamaican woman so much. Lol it’s their kindness and selflessness that cuts them from a different cloth. Definitely refreshing to see.
It’s the most authentic too
Thanks
Shootout was saying that " as long as you are with him , no one can bother you"
He also said that no one can come on his land without him giving them authorisation.
The weed he was showing you, it's called Maroon weed, it closes its leaves when its touched.
Love my country. Thanks for broadcasting it to the world Tommy. Yah real yute.
I really love your county, too! The more videos I see of it, the more it makes me want to visit, possibly even live there. Big up 👍. Lots of love from the Netherlands.

I've seen all Sabbatical videos up until this point, and I think this one might just be my surprise favorite. Thanks to Shootout and this special town
The whole island is very picturesque. Even the unpaved roads aren't that bad.
I only saw one place you showed that had abandoned cars by the side of the road ( that's what they do in West Africa).
Everything else, is clean, picturesque and fresh.
I believe the Maroons were undefeated by the British and the British ended up signing a peace treaty with them.
The Colonel speaks perfect English, so there's no need for subtitles.
People are very friendly and welcoming.
The one man who asked you for money was direct and had no ulterior motive. That's a clean approach I can live with.
Once again. Thank you Tommy!
Edit: the thumbnail part had me dying. I wish I knew you in person as our demeanor and the way we go through life and social interactions is very similar. Keep on rocking
I needed this in my life. You’re about one of the only travel vloggers I can stand. Thank
You for being you and pumping out nothing but the hits. And intimacy with the places you visit that’s 2nd to none. Please stay safe out there, and be well. Until next upload!

Tommy...that was overwhelmingly incredible. You always bump into some of the most iconic characters in your visits...from "Everybody Know Me" to "Shootout". Kudos, Man.
It's not often you get to see film of authentic Jamaica, and specifically the distinction between the crazy hustle of towns and cities vs the beautiful country life.
There is so much more to Jamaica than the stereotypes. This series captures that perfectly, whilst showing the true spirit of the people there.
Shout out to Jamaicans. I had a mind-blowing visit there and was shown a good time despite the
warnings from all the 'official' kind of people warning me about doing such a thing. Respect!
Nuff respect!
Respect to Sabbatical. You're a brave man driving up the Blue Mountains. A lot of Jamaicans have no idea what the Blue Mountains are like because they never been up there.
I know people who turned back halfway on the way to Strawberry Hills, a famous Restaurant on the Mountains, because that driving was too stressful. Just a conservative estimate, I think 85 percent of Jamaicans never been up the Blue Mountains. So they don't know the true beauty that lies up there.
Lol..sadly I am in that 80 percent. Furthest I have gone is Newcastle..one day one day...this from a guy who has driven Round Jamaica several times...I will have to do that trip on my next return visit.
If people are on TH-cam getting to the peak of Mt Everest, blue mountains should b a damn breeze
