The day I beat a Buick like this with my 1965 ford wagon with a 352. I was sitting behind a tractor trailer at a light on a rainy day. The Buick came flying around the bend at about 60 mph, and just before he slammed into me, I cut my wheel to the right. He pushed me into a field, past the truck, and he ended up past me. I gave him a ride to his house. All he did was put a big dent in my tailgate. He broke his motor mounts and smashed his bumper and fender into his wheel.
I like the Buicks, but I like the Pontiac 455s more. The 455s don't really mind not having much compression, no matter what car they came in. I have a 455 HO 72 Formula that runs mid 12s easily. A friend of mine put a Stage 1 in a Vega Kamback in the late 1980s. Lots of fun with that thing.
I had a 71 Buick 455 stage 1 we upgraded with better Ignition, super comp headers and better carb we put into a 82 G-body car with 373 posi :) had alot of fun with that car

You couldn't even floor that car unless it was from a 40 mph roll-off, without burning the tires all the way down the road......leaving the shifter in "Drive", you could feather the throttle to coax it into every gear, still burning rubber. Damn that car had power.

It's got lower compression so why does the lower compression 455's have 454's numbers in the high emission period,yet in 1970 high compression ratios 454 had it's number!! 455's i wonder how GM designed the block to do better in low compression than it did in high,it mustve had to do with the heads or the cylinders!! It ran better somehow!! That Buick just kicked that 440's a**!! It moght be heavier too!!

The Buick with driver weighs an astounding 5,200 LBS!!! A long time ago, I used to own a '71 Buick Riviera ( boat tail ) with the Stage 1 package, with the hotter cam, bigger valves, heavier valve springs, posi rear end, and duel exhaust. It was MUCH faster than the '73 in this video, I kid you not. Wish I still had it.
I'm amazed there was a Stage1 Riviera.That was a special engine at a special time for Buick. I doubt any customers ordered those. I would guess the dealer ordered it as a demo. Way too much fun in such a high end cruiser. Mahalo for the vid
I owned one years ago, a '71 Riviera with Stage 1 package. My female cousin bought it used, still in great condition inside & out. I horse traded with her to get that car back around 1982. It was incredibly fast & torque for days.

Die hard Mopar guy here but man do I love those boat tail Riveys. My best friend had a 71 back in high school during the mid to late 90’s. Even with the non stage 1 package it still ran really well and the torque of those things was incredible. He never should have had that car at such a young age though. He never changed the oil and ended up spinning a rod bearing and sold the car for $500 about a year or so later. The car was absolutely mint when they bought it.
Wow! That Riv is faster than a stock 73, 340 Challenger, that I used to have. We toured Mexico in that exact 455 Riv(not stage 1, tho)we were told, never, ever drive in Mexico at night. One evening, in the middle of no where, gas guage on E. The flipping thing died! We about had kittens! We were scared! I'm slightly mechanically declined, so, I, popped the hood and the air cleaner lid. Low and behold, the choke linkage had come loose and closed, killing the motor. One bread tie later, with moist underwear, We were back on the road. The interior of Mexico is weird, it's deserted, you can drive for hours and hours, and NEVER see another car. Never drove at night, thank goodness.

Dead old dad had a place outside of Rosarita near Puerto Neuvo. Sleepy little fishing town. 2 lb lobster diinners for $2.50 and all the beer you could drink. He found a 1968 LTD wagon for his 'non-descript' car to drive around down there. It was a 428 . . . All the locals knew and loved that car. Spend many a night partying down there.
@@451dskots88 sound? Cant tell from a video. Looked? Yes. It looks like there is a delayed 1-2 upshift and that is slowing their speed. A 440 is a formidable V8 and the Charger is about 600lbs lighter so it shouldnt really lose a race. I would suggest he start in 2nd gear then upshift to 3rd later or keep it in 2nd for the whole race. And still I dont know what rear end he has in there either
3.55' for the charger. Figure if its falling off in MPH and ET that much you'd def hear it slip between shifts if it has trans problems... Either way, trans or engine issues... The car still ran like a bucket of ass (and I'm a Mopar guy saying that).
@@451dskots88 yea I tend to favor the Mopar stuff over the GM stuff and that car ran like a dog, unless he wasnt pushing it because he didnt want to break anything. A lot of guys drive their car to the track from home so they dont go hard on it.
14.70 is pretty much identical to what my lightly modded 1970 Mach 1 Mustang (351W automatic with Holley 4 bbl, headers and dual exhaust) ran back around 1974. If I had raced and lost to a bone stock Rivera’s I would have sold the car the next flippin’ day!
I had a 69 Mach1, 351W . automatic. Cam head work intake 780 holley headers and 325 gears in the 1978. Ran 13.8 @102mph. Not bad in its day. Still miss that car
I wonder if my 1970 Cadillac Eldorado with its 10 to 1 compression 500 CID V8 could take on the Riviera. Just got done relacing the timing chain, maybe I will test it out in the Spring.
@@fanoboss Naw, Boss I personally seen that 70 Eldo beat a 1969 Rivera GS with the 430 . The right front tire was smoked on the Eldo. Both cars were stock and I think the Riv driver was a better driver,but he couldn't beat the Eldo.
Back about 1982, I had a '71 Buick Riviera ( boat tail ) Stage 1, duel exhaust, posi rear, factory Buick mag wheels, that would blow the doors off the one in this video, I kid you not. You couldn't floor the throttle even at 20 mph, because it would literally burn the tires all the way down the road, if ya didn't feather back on the throttle. You could ease off the throttle just enough to get it to shift through each gear, mash it a little more, and keep burning tires, even in top gear. But from a 40 mph roll off, she would hook and pin you back in the seat. My dad and uncles were all good mechanics & hot rodders. This car shocked them. None of them would race me. Another kid had a '68 Firebird 400/4-speed. This car was a beast. I wouldn't race him from a standing start for obvious reasons. But one night, he finally agreed to race me from a 40 mph roll-off. I gapped him so bad, we just kept going & left him out of sight, he didn't even show up at the place where we agreed to meet after the race. PLUS, I HAD A PASSENGER, HE DIDN'T. We weren't racing "1/4 mile". We were on highway I-65 outside of Cullman Alabama, heading towards town. Damn that car was fast. But ya weren't going anywhere from a standing start. I would just leave it in "Drive".......and "power braking" was NOT necessary. Wish I still had it today. I would've had it restored by now. But it was in near showroom condition back then.
If you were spinning the tires from a 20 mph start, you had the one wheel peel version, either that or it was raining that day, and those are Rallye wheels, not mags. Don’t get me wrong, they run good, I still have my Riv from when I bought it in 1982.

IT NEVER LEFT "A SINGLE STRIP" ON THE ROAD. Rally wheels, fine. Whatever. We always called them "Buick factory mags". But you or no one else is going to explain away the dozens of side by side burn-out marks all up & down Eva highway in Cullman county Alabama. FURTHERMORE: THE FACTORY STICKER INSIDE THE GLOVEBOX DOOR HAD POSI-TRACTION LISTED AMONG THE OPTIONS FOR THAT CAR. So you can't explain that away either. Hell, me and family & friends would go back to have a look at the burn-out marks we had just left, to see how far down the road they continued. Also, something now worth mentioning, some time after posting my original comment here, I have since learned from the fella who recently brought back the AHRA, and happens to be a total classic Buick expert, who told me that while most don't know or even believe it, the Stage 1 heads were absolutely available on the 455, even for the Riviera in '71, but only via special order. You can disagree with that all ya like, but go take it up with that gentleman. He has a video on youtube explaining and showing all of the different Buick 455 heads. Tony of "Uncle Tony's Garage" channel was with him while making that video. ( It may have been on Tony's channel, I can't remember which, and I'm not gonna bust my own balls trying to find it, because quite frankly, I don't give a shit whether you believe me or not. ) It was via the comments section under that video, where I reached out to him & told him about the '71 Riviera I once owned decades ago, and how strong it was. I'm NOT claiming I know "for a fact" that engine had Stage 1 heads, I have no way of knowing now, but way back then, I was just a kid, and I recall all of the older men in my family who were mechanics and racers/hot rodders ( to varying degrees ) and how they were mystified by that car, saying things like "There's no way that's a stock 455". I was just a kid and wasn't even aware of Stage 1 heads or Stage 1 package. I can't recall if any of them mentioned it either. Even if they had, if they failed to explain "Stage 1" to me back then, it would've flew right over my head. The only thing I got wrong in my comment was the year I owned that car: it was 1980, NOT '82. I was 18 yrs old at the time.

As 1977 came rolling in, with Star Wars playing at the drive-in theater's you couldn't go to a custom car show without seeing 3-4 of these Riviera's suspended on chrome jack stands.
I always thought the Riviera and Grand Prix from this era had some very interesting body lines and different looks. For that weight that thing was sure getting down the track!
My dad bought a 1972 Buick Centurion convertible brand new. I was just a little kid but I remember him complaining about how long it took to get because it was special ordered. Years later as a teen and learning about cars I really appreciated it for what it was. It had the Stage 1 engine and the "Max Trac" option. The "Max Trac" was pretty weird for traction control but it worked. If you had it on and it was really slick out, like after an ice storm, it would retard the timing so bad that the engine would almost die. In the 1990's a friend who raced dirt track professionally stole the design and had MSD integrate it into his ignition box. It was cheating but it was undetectable for the most part by track officials unlike more traditional traction control with WSS and a brake module. He won a lot of races before they finally figured it out. My dad sold the Centurion in 2016 with only 42k pampered miles on it for the grand sum of $4000. I didn't think he would ever part with that car but he did.

My dad bought new Buick Riviera every 2/3 years. In '73 he had the same setup Stage 1, 3.23:1 limited slip with Max-Trac. It worked quite well during snow. But, he was always putting it in the "OFF" position. His came with a hole in the roof. He didn't order it but,every thing he did order came with the car. @1st, we didn't know what the 3lil lites on both front fenders were. Lamp monitors. He had the 60/40 power bench seat, & column shifter. I was barely a teenager, & with all the available adjustments (tilt steering) I learned how to drive. The boat tail was reduced but,still nice. I know for a fact them Riviera GS Stage 1 kicked alot of so-called muscle cars of that era. Thanks for the memories.
Correct, hopefully it has those Stage 1 Genes, like you said the "Hemi Killer" even tho this Buick is just a basic 455, and Very heavy, i still putting my Money on the Buick. I had a 70 Riv. And I used to beat a lot of cars . One time I raced a 78 Trans Am. I had five people in the car . This trans am use to race all the time 15.0sec qt mile. The car was a 220 HP 400. I pulled away like if he hit the brakes. I love Buicks. I'm also a Pontiac fanatic. My favorite is Buick & Pontiac. I also like Mopar.

Butch - you are singing my tune - had a 77 Olds 98 in the 80s, bought from a retired Doctor - it was a cremepuff with 403, TH400, telescopic steering, and came with factory Tow Package - which included a 3.23 Limited slip rear end and oil coolers. This was THE smoothest car I ever owned, and dusted many a whoosey Camaro or Mustang in the 80s. I drove this car several years, then my MOTHER drove it a few years, then she sold it to a buddy of mine who drove it for at least another 4 years and never changed the oil - yet it went to another owner......what a car!!!
Wow! I didnt expect that Buick to run that fast. It ran like it was a Stage 1 455 under the hood. That Mopar needs to go up to Canada, to Nick's Garage, get the 440 overhauled and a nice cam in it and try to get 390hp and 425 ft lbs out of it.

I think a lot of people that weren't there back in the day are beginning to realize just how much bullshit Mopar guys have been shoveling over the years. Like the mythical "big block killer" 340 that at no time in it's production was over 275HP or 300 lbft of torque.

455 with a smog pump now that is stock, I'm pleased to see a pure stock with original equipment, and at 14.7 that is a respectable time, now that is a personal luxury car with some performance!!!2022
Buick 455 is a beast I know I was in those days with the mopars with torque people don't understand these days a whole different area no nitrous no turbo just power.

Something about the weight of Buicks seems to make them do unlikely things. Test & Tune night @ the Memphis Motorsports Park once had a big Buick 225 (Deuce and Quarter) embarrassing the other muscle cars. It clearly wasn't stock or close to it, but that thing hooked up and rolled fast. One of the best cars running that day was a 73 Mach I Mustang running a 428 FE block. I was stunned when the big Buick put him down.
Shame the Charger had issues as this would have been a close race, regardless at over 5000lbs th Buick did some great times, this really was a golden era for American car manufacturers, coming from an Australian too.
Is it just me or did anyone notice what I think was the smog pump still present on the Rivi? Might have been the AC compressor but it looked like a smog pump to me
@6:00, I think the Charger's issues are 2nd gear upshift in the 727 and we dont know the rear end it has. Starting in 2nd gear may help his launching issue
Two years later, the Torqueflite does not allow 2nd gear starts. If the shifter is put in 2 the transmission still starts out in first gear unless it has a manual valve body.

@@CarsAndZebras oh I missed it. I normally dont read Video Descriptions, most viewers dont. In any event I still think the RB 440 V8 is a better motor than the Stage 1 455. Any lack in performance I would place on the driver or transmission gearing for 1st and 2nd.
My dad bought a 1973 Buick gran sport 350 new in 73. He only passed on the stage 1 option because the salesperson told him it wasn't worth it. My dad regretted it. Still, the 350 in top form wasn't bad for 73. It got up and ran pretty good.
rivieras are beautiful and its about time people start recognizing the buick 455 was a serious engine. all in all though the charger was the boat version with a detuned 1971 motor. my 68 skylark had a rebuilt riviera 455 in it.

I'm only lacking that nice expensive set of stage 1 heads and I'd have a Stage 1 motor. Got the original GM cam and springs in place...huge difference but the price on those heads. Ouch
Get a bigger Cam! I have a 74 GS 455 Century, it has 10 to 1 compression pistons now, stock heads and a much bigger cam with .490 lift...makes up for the smaller valves. I am around 420 HP with alum intake, headers, HEI igntion, and Q-jet carb.
Did anyone hear the Riviera bark second gear ? All the Charger driver is gonna see is Buick headlights. Edit: I guess not. The 4 barrel on the Charger wasn't busting, or it had a 318 ci engine.

A 440 is a formidable V8 and the Charger is about 600lbs lighter so it shouldnt really lose a race. I would suggest he start in 2nd gear then upshift to 3rd later or keep it in 2nd for the whole race.
And still I dont know what rear end he has in there either
3.55' for the charger. Figure if its falling off in MPH and ET that much you'd def hear it slip between shifts if it has trans problems... Either way, trans or engine issues... The car still ran like a bucket of ass (and I'm a Mopar guy saying that).
@@451dskots88 yea I tend to favor the Mopar stuff over the GM stuff and that car ran like a dog, unless he wasnt pushing it because he didnt want to break anything. A lot of guys drive their car to the track from home so they dont go hard on it.
14.70 is pretty much identical to what my lightly modded 1970 Mach 1 Mustang (351W automatic with Holley 4 bbl, headers and dual exhaust) ran back around 1974. If I had raced and lost to a bone stock Rivera’s I would have sold the car the next flippin’ day!

I had a 69 Mach1, 351W . automatic. Cam head work intake 780 holley headers and 325 gears in the 1978. Ran 13.8 @102mph. Not bad in its day. Still miss that car

@@fanoboss Naw, Boss I personally seen that 70 Eldo beat a 1969 Rivera GS with the 430 . The right front tire was smoked on the Eldo. Both cars were stock and I think the Riv driver was a better driver,but he couldn't beat the Eldo.

Back about 1982, I had a '71 Buick Riviera ( boat tail ) Stage 1, duel exhaust, posi rear, factory Buick mag wheels, that would blow the doors off the one in this video, I kid you not. You couldn't floor the throttle even at 20 mph, because it would literally burn the tires all the way down the road, if ya didn't feather back on the throttle. You could ease off the throttle just enough to get it to shift through each gear, mash it a little more, and keep burning tires, even in top gear. But from a 40 mph roll off, she would hook and pin you back in the seat. My dad and uncles were all good mechanics & hot rodders. This car shocked them. None of them would race me. Another kid had a '68 Firebird 400/4-speed. This car was a beast. I wouldn't race him from a standing start for obvious reasons. But one night, he finally agreed to race me from a 40 mph roll-off. I gapped him so bad, we just kept going & left him out of sight, he didn't even show up at the place where we agreed to meet after the race. PLUS, I HAD A PASSENGER, HE DIDN'T. We weren't racing "1/4 mile". We were on highway I-65 outside of Cullman Alabama, heading towards town. Damn that car was fast. But ya weren't going anywhere from a standing start. I would just leave it in "Drive".......and "power braking" was NOT necessary. Wish I still had it today. I would've had it restored by now. But it was in near showroom condition back then.
If you were spinning the tires from a 20 mph start, you had the one wheel peel version, either that or it was raining that day, and those are Rallye wheels, not mags. Don’t get me wrong, they run good, I still have my Riv from when I bought it in 1982.

But you or no one else is going to explain away the dozens of side by side burn-out marks all up & down Eva highway in Cullman county Alabama. FURTHERMORE: THE FACTORY STICKER INSIDE THE GLOVEBOX DOOR HAD POSI-TRACTION LISTED AMONG THE OPTIONS FOR THAT CAR. So you can't explain that away either. Hell, me and family & friends would go back to have a look at the burn-out marks we had just left, to see how far down the road they continued. Also, something now worth mentioning, some time after posting my original comment here, I have since learned from the fella who recently brought back the AHRA, and happens to be a total classic Buick expert, who told me that while most don't know or even believe it, the Stage 1 heads were absolutely available on the 455, even for the Riviera in '71, but only via special order. You can disagree with that all ya like, but go take it up with that gentleman. He has a video on youtube explaining and showing all of the different Buick 455 heads. Tony of "Uncle Tony's Garage" channel was with him while making that video. ( It may have been on Tony's channel, I can't remember which, and I'm not gonna bust my own balls trying to find it, because quite frankly, I don't give a shit whether you believe me or not. ) It was via the comments section under that video, where I reached out to him & told him about the '71 Riviera I once owned decades ago, and how strong it was. I'm NOT claiming I know "for a fact" that engine had Stage 1 heads, I have no way of knowing now, but way back then, I was just a kid, and I recall all of the older men in my family who were mechanics and racers/hot rodders ( to varying degrees ) and how they were mystified by that car, saying things like "There's no way that's a stock 455". I was just a kid and wasn't even aware of Stage 1 heads or Stage 1 package. I can't recall if any of them mentioned it either. Even if they had, if they failed to explain "Stage 1" to me back then, it would've flew right over my head. The only thing I got wrong in my comment was the year I owned that car: it was 1980, NOT '82. I was 18 yrs old at the time.

I always thought the Riviera and Grand Prix from this era had some very interesting body lines and different looks. For that weight that thing was sure getting down the track!

My dad bought a 1972 Buick Centurion convertible brand new. I was just a little kid but I remember him complaining about how long it took to get because it was special ordered. Years later as a teen and learning about cars I really appreciated it for what it was. It had the Stage 1 engine and the "Max Trac" option. The "Max Trac" was pretty weird for traction control but it worked. If you had it on and it was really slick out, like after an ice storm, it would retard the timing so bad that the engine would almost die. In the 1990's a friend who raced dirt track professionally stole the design and had MSD integrate it into his ignition box. It was cheating but it was undetectable for the most part by track officials unlike more traditional traction control with WSS and a brake module. He won a lot of races before they finally figured it out. My dad sold the Centurion in 2016 with only 42k pampered miles on it for the grand sum of $4000. I didn't think he would ever part with that car but he did.

My dad bought new Buick Riviera every 2/3 years. In '73 he had the same setup Stage 1, 3.23:1 limited slip with Max-Trac. It worked quite well during snow. But, he was always putting it in the "OFF" position. His came with a hole in the roof. He didn't order it but,every thing he did order came with the car. @1st, we didn't know what the 3lil lites on both front fenders were. Lamp monitors. He had the 60/40 power bench seat, & column shifter. I was barely a teenager, & with all the available adjustments (tilt steering) I learned how to drive. The boat tail was reduced but,still nice. I know for a fact them Riviera GS Stage 1 kicked alot of so-called muscle cars of that era. Thanks for the memories.

I had a 70 Riv. And I used to beat a lot of cars . One time I raced a 78 Trans Am. I had five people in the car . This trans am use to race all the time 15.0sec qt mile. The car was a 220 HP 400. I pulled away like if he hit the brakes. I love Buicks. I'm also a Pontiac fanatic. My favorite is Buick & Pontiac. I also like Mopar.

Butch - you are singing my tune - had a 77 Olds 98 in the 80s, bought from a retired Doctor - it was a cremepuff with 403, TH400, telescopic steering, and came with factory Tow Package - which included a 3.23 Limited slip rear end and oil coolers. This was THE smoothest car I ever owned, and dusted many a whoosey Camaro or Mustang in the 80s. I drove this car several years, then my MOTHER drove it a few years, then she sold it to a buddy of mine who drove it for at least another 4 years and never changed the oil - yet it went to another owner......what a car!!!
Wow! I didnt expect that Buick to run that fast. It ran like it was a Stage 1 455 under the hood. That Mopar needs to go up to Canada, to Nick's Garage, get the 440 overhauled and a nice cam in it and try to get 390hp and 425 ft lbs out of it.

Test & Tune night @ the Memphis Motorsports Park once had a big Buick 225 (Deuce and Quarter) embarrassing the other muscle cars.
It clearly wasn't stock or close to it, but that thing hooked up and rolled fast. One of the best cars running that day was a 73 Mach I Mustang running a 428 FE block. I was stunned when the big Buick put him down.

@6:00, I think the Charger's issues are 2nd gear upshift in the 727 and we dont know the rear end it has. Starting in 2nd gear may help his launching issue
Not only is the rear gearing listed in the video description box, it is also in the video.
Two years later, the Torqueflite does not allow 2nd gear starts. If the shifter is put in 2 the transmission still starts out in first gear unless it has a manual valve body.

@@CarsAndZebras oh I missed it. I normally dont read Video Descriptions, most viewers dont. In any event I still think the RB 440 V8 is a better motor than the Stage 1 455. Any lack in performance I would place on the driver or transmission gearing for 1st and 2nd.
My dad bought a 1973 Buick gran sport 350 new in 73. He only passed on the stage 1 option because the salesperson told him it wasn't worth it. My dad regretted it. Still, the 350 in top form wasn't bad for 73. It got up and ran pretty good.

I'm only lacking that nice expensive set of stage 1 heads and I'd have a Stage 1 motor. Got the original GM cam and springs in place...huge difference but the price on those heads. Ouch
Get a bigger Cam! I have a 74 GS 455 Century, it has 10 to 1 compression pistons now, stock heads and a much bigger cam with .490 lift...makes up for the smaller valves. I am around 420 HP with alum intake, headers, HEI igntion, and Q-jet carb.
