    FINALLY! I've been waiting for this tablet dock (can I say tabdock btw?). People who say this thing is pointless really have no idea how cost-effective this little gadget is. That tabdock and a phone cost less than a native Android tablet with underwhelming hardware.

    here's what i hope for. I want to see more manufacturers have their own version of samsung dex, and make it a feature for mid-range to top tier. This way, you will also get more potential users. It could be almost a 1 fits all solution than paying through the nose for a laptop. There are many people in this world that can't afford a decent laptop or a macbook and shit like this, if done properly, could help propel not only android but even iOS to the frontlines of somewhat a desktop replacement.
    I know other tech channels hardly cover this and when they do, it's almost in a dismissive behaviour but that's because they already have a fully realized tech gadget with them. I see the potential here and you are already seeing some focus on android tablets post covid a hell lot more. Also, i don't agree that the iPad is closer to a desktop than the android side of things. On the iPad for example, I can only run extensions on Safari whereas on Android, there is Kiwi Browser, an open source chromium fork that allows chrome extensions.
    it's not elegant but the fact that it did it before google did it on their android version of chrome, is astounding.
    iPads btw, generally speaking, are quite powerful but it's really lame in terms of what it locks down. For casuals, i guess that's OK because they only use it mainly as a media device and they might not know what potentials they're missing. I have the s8 tab, and the iPad Air 5. I can do a hell lot more on my s8 tab for work than i can on the iPad. I despise the finger blob mouse pointer thing apple did -- makes me want to touch the screen for a better experience and i guess, that's the plan on their end.
    the s8 tab , by benchmark on 3dmark , is basically able to run at half the speed of the m1 iPad Air but yet, sadly, can do more. However, there are some basics of a computer /mac that is missing from android, like drag and drop on any app. I would like to see at least , a linux level file browser rather than what there is on now for tablet mode. Perhaps with Android 13, we would see some of these come to fruition.
    btw, for photoshop -- i suggest sumo(dot)app and Photopea(dot)com. for simple edits, I would suggest canva or pixlr. For art stuff - clip studio is good. for video editing (basic -- not PC level) - powerdirector and luma fusion is coming to Android (not sure when). for browser, i use kiwi browser for work and samsung internet and opera for personal stuff.
    I think if samsung can introduce a full desktop browser (not only desktop view option) , that looks and feels like it was on the PC, would be great. I know for phones, that's kinda useless but if it can flip between phone and desktop -- that would be amazing.
    Anyway, i love this channel because i see actual testing for tech gadgets and workarounds with the gadgets you actually have -- rather than this is the best and the only way you can do stuff. so keep up the good work , juan. appreciate it.

      I still don't see Android as a true desktop OS replacement, but it can be more than enough for most average consumers who only do web and social media browsing and simple Word document creation. That is why I want to see GNU Linux smartphone like Purism Librem 5 and PINE64 PinePhone/PinePhone Pro to go big. With GNU Linux, it made a genuine laptop replacement. I am more than happy to leave my laptop behind if I have a GNU Linux smartphone with modern SoC firepower.

    It's getting closer to what, IMO, is the perfect form factor for these portable monitors mainly for phones with PC Modes: the Asus Padfone / Padfone 2. Make the dock behind the screen adjustable to accommodate various phone width (widths?), slap that magnetic cover and a detachable keyboard a la Lenovo P11 Pro. And voila! A phone, tablet and laptop hybrid! The Padfone 2 was really ahead of its time. Maybe NexDock is the right manufacturer for this since they don't have to promote their own phone to sell their docks.

    • @michaelcorcoran8768

      I love it but I'm not sure I would get much utility out of it just because it doesn't have speakers or a 3.5 mm Jack or a battery. That requires a lot of work arounds. Once you account for all the accessories you need it's probably a better deal just to get a used tab S7 or something. Or a more fully featured lapdock.
      But damn it if I was a reviewer I would absolutely love playing around with it. Just not sure if I could justify paying for it even at the reasonable price of 200 bucks
      But of course if it succeeds, hopefully they'll be variants down the road that account for some of these compromises.
      I mean I guess if you already have a note 9 laying around and a keyboard, this might be a pretty cheap way to get dex on the go. But you're not going to get much battery life charging it from an old phone so you basically need to be carrying around affordable charger of some kind constantly. And no 3.5 mm Jack means you'll need a USBC Hub or some dongles to get any real audio.
      Super cool device but it just requires a lot of thought into how to incorporate it into a workflow

    • @farishanafiah8461
      @farishanafiah8461 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can understand that. The NexDock still wins for keyboard integration. But if I only want the screen for gaming or media viewing, the NexPad doesn't sound like a bad idea.

    • @williamaungleyraud
      @williamaungleyraud 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelcorcoran8768 I like the road that the company want to develop, but personally I feel that the product isn't ready for prime time, or at least they released embargo too early.
      Had they polished the product a little more, have some pre-production keyboards out for the influencers to test out and give feedback upon, perhaps a couple of case or sleeve options, perhaps a folio case with an integrated keyboard/track pad.
      And I'm all in for extra options, why not have a version with a integrated battery, and please correct me if I'm wrong, I watched a couple of review videos, but without super paying attention, but it didn't seem to have any io, sd card reader, usb for mouse or peripherals, even active stylus compatibility. Again I could be very wrong.
      So I'm not saying that this particular product is bad, rather I'd say it had lots of potential room for improvement, even if at an added cost.
      The other half of the coin is that we need more Android devices to embrace desktop mode and further develop its integration to Android, we need more apps that are just as capable as the pc/Mac counterparts, like a real deal Photoshop and Lightroom (unlike the current mobile apps) and LumaFusion or even Davinci Resolve. And that's up to app developers to catch up with. And unless the mass marked demonstrate interest for such support, a niche demographic wond spin those R&D dollars.
      M1 iPads are the perfect example of how backward Apple think of its customers, had they created an iPad with a real MacOS in combination with the M1/M2 chip, this would probably seel hotcakes, and it would probably pull me away from windows. Yet Apple fears pulling the move and cannibalize its laptop line of products.
      Products like portable monitors are just temporary patches to a slowly inevitable market movement which we all want to have the one portable machine that can do it all, either docked in an office with a full size monitor and gear, or inside an airplane's cabin.
      Enough of my blabbing 😂😂😂 it's just my opinion after all 😁👍

    Greetings from the future (July 2024). You can find this for sale for $199, with used/refurb units going for $139-$160. Nex never released a cover for this. They also never released a keyboard (leaving those pogo pins on the bottom of the display rather lonely). Feels like a one-off product that probably didn't sell well. I can't think of a use case for it - at $250, there's a lot to choose from in the portable display market (add $50 and you can get a dual-screen portable display, or a larger 120hz panel).

      If it has video out, then you see the phone screen mirrored. It's silly in portrait orientation, but it's not terrible in landscape. Just have some letterboxing on phones with taller aspect ratios.
      If the phone doesn't have USB3 though, then nothing happens. Most cheaper phones use USB2, and lack video out.

      I like the idea of the Nexpad. Not a big dual screen user. However if I am with a client and want to show them a house listing, this is a great way to do it! I do have an Android, (Samsung newest) so was disheartened to hear the OS would not rotate the Nexpad like the phone can.
      Also if I want to use a wireless mouse and keyboard via my phone, would that also work on the Nexpad via Bluetooth?
      Seems like there could be a DIY factor in this somewhere as well, though I haven't heard much about available basic tablet units that someone could outfit in the way the Nexpad is outfitted/configured.

      I'm not so sure about that. I never like using Android tablet because of its weight and size. Also, cheap tablets never have a great hardware to begin with. I have two or three year old flagship phones that are still faster than that. As for that Lenovo tablet, yes, it does sound like a good idda but you need to pay almost $700 for it. So for someone like me who occasionally need a larger screen like the NexPad for mobile gaming, it is worth it.

    Must admit, sorely tempted. Almost puked the trigger on a Chinese portable, but the discount fell through, and the regular price is actually around the same as this with less features and (presumably) cheaper build. This one feels like a much better value proposition than the dock.
    Use case here would be as field monitor for cellphone cinematography and photography... and drone use. Awful difficult to show client what the debit is like on a cellphone. Having them look at a separate monitor is so much easier. Wireless monitor connections don't work when the cellphone is already wirelessly hooked to the drone, and flying with a tablet hooked to the remote is a bit cumbersome.

    That cable hanging off the side makes it a NO for me.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      No that's in style now. Apple is bringing cables sticking out the side of displays as a feature now.

    • @kingzach74

      If the cable hanging off the side makes it a no for you, then you can easily get the Wireless NexDock Wireless for $299 right now plus shipping and ditch the wire/cable. The downside is it will be the size of a small laptop but the upsides include a keyboard, trackpad, a bit bigger screen, a built-in battery, and additional ports.
      Keep in mind though, wireless connectivity is MUCH MUCH slower than connecting directly with a cable and may result in some noticeable lag. There's a reason wireless displays aren't fully mainstream, the technology really isn't completely there yet. There is a Uperfect device that connects via 5G MMwave but it requires a separate device(receiver/transmitter) to get that faster connection wirelessly. There really is not a good option for wireless display tech that doesn't cost a fortune.
      There are ridiculously expensive TVs that have Wireless display boxes but they are likely out of reach for anybody who isn't a millionaire or billionaire.
      The tech will eventually get there, but most phones just don't include wireless display radios designed specifically for wirelessly transmitting at low latency. The limiting factor isn't these lapdocks or in this case NexPad, it's the devices you would connect to these devices.
      Some day though these lapdocks and this NexPad might be able to connect to a phone in the future that has a REALLY powerful Bluetooth and Miracast transmitter built in. The amazing thing? They likely wouldn't need any physical upgrade or change to these devices. The devices in the future likely would be backward compatible with these and function like how you're expecting.
      Wireless audio at audiophile levels is hard enough, wirelessly transmitting video is another beast ENTIRELY.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy

      Well that would be a terrible way to try and use the desktop mode on your phone. And it wouldn't be a screen for any other gadget either. Can't play my steam deck on an ipad...

    • @myaccount__7269
      @myaccount__7269 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SomeGadgetGuy it's great for second screen like for switch or steam deck. I just don't think it's a good use case for a tablet replacement. A iPad is $299 now and won't use up your phone battery.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But then I can't have both in one gadget. If I'm going to USE my phone for more compute tasks, I can use it with a screen that also services my camera, consoles, etc. iPad does none of that, AND I'd need to treat it as a standalone "computer" device. So if I get that iPad, I STILL need another screen? Naw... I'm good...

    I have an interesting question to ask with some context to deliver, which will be given through my on replies, so:

    • @stevepogue1124
      @stevepogue1124 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I daily drive a Galaxy A52 5G, and use an LG Velvet (inactive att sim) for watching shows I can't access on Netflix or HBO Max and emulating 3ds games. I kinda want to upgrade from my Velvet to a Galaxy s10e, because some of my 3ds roms are a chore for the Velvet and I'm confident that the s10e can perform better, and I'm a bit interested in diving deeper into the Samsung ecosystem, BUT:

    • @stevepogue1124
      @stevepogue1124 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also kinda wanna get rid of both my phones and upgrade to a Moto G100 to use for both: Use it as a phone out n about, then hook it up to my dock and use Ready For at home. The performance is the main reason, but also for little things, like the side-mounted fingerprint sensor, Motorola's gestures and bigger battery. The problem is, the Moto G100 is over double the price of the s10e.

    • @stevepogue1124
      @stevepogue1124 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, should I dive into Samsung's ecosystem with the s10e and some accessories or go with the Moto G100 and explore a new side of american Android?

    • @GoatV8
      @GoatV8 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevepogue1124the S10e is great but it's going to start showing it's age here soon. Since you're into gaming/emulating I'd go with the G100. That battery and SD870 will be great for gaming. Plus that phone will be able to handle any thrown at it for the next few years better than the 855 in the S10e.

      Without a built-in battery, it will deplete phone battery even faster. I'd think twice of having such a feature. For this kind of size, 1080p is more than enough.
