Might be interesting to create some kind of house rule where your group goes into the dungeon together and fights over the loot, maybe each character is assigned a class in addition to the dice. (like the half-goblin would be a thief.) Would take some thinking but could possibly improve the game for group play.
Hi Tom and Melody..keep up the reviews! On the levellling up of the character cards..I believe you do not need to lose 5 xp to level it up, it occurs when you have gained 5 xp.
You don't "spend" xp points to flip your hero! Just like in DnD you don't lose xp when you level up. After the round you reach the 5 xp needed you flip the card and lose nothing.
@atzerath: In most good games, you take part in the game in some form or other even when it's not your turn. And if you NEED a beer to enjoy a game, then that's a bad sign...
You mentioned needing to spend 5 vp for getting your upgrade. That is not true, it says so clearly in the rules that you need 5 vp for being able to get the improvement, but you do not spend them.
Hi Guys. Another good video but I think you have one of the rules wrong. The way Rod Smith at Watch It Played explained it, you only have to earn 5 experience points to advance your hero card, not spend them. If you make it to level five of the dungeon on your first turn, you can flip the card over for your second turn and you still have the five xp.
MSRP is $20 for this, though its not released yet, and will probably be sold for closer to $15 at the bigger online retailers. People are just now getting their kickstarter versions of the game.
Spot on Tom, I played the four player version with a p n p copy and I could feel the life being sucked out of the room. There's also something fundamentally wrong with a dice game where the person helping the active player gets to do more dice rolling than the active player does. But even so, rolling the dungeon dice for the active player isn't 'being involved' it's helping your mate with his chores. The box is nice though.
Another aspect of the Luck Factor that often gets overlooked is the Heroes. Some of them are heads and shoulders better than others. In my groups experience the Scout has won every time someone has played it.
I wouldn't pay $25+ for this but I have seen it for under $15. For that, it is probably worth it for me as a light conversation game. Sometimes you want to hang out and play and talk about something other than the game. Kinda like playing cards. For that I think it would be great.
There should be some sort of action that the dungeon can take, other than rolling the dice... Maybe some sort of random 'boss' card drawn each level or something that gives the dungeon some sort of twister?
Yeah. I've seen Watch it Played review and he clearly said that you just need to have the exp but you don't need to get rid of it. Of course it would make a difference if you'd loose 5 victory points.
I can see it fitting the place in my collection for a no player interaction filler. They could have made it have more player interaction / backstabbing like King of Tokyo but sometimes its just nice to play a really quick filler game that's more laid back (more like Yahtzee is). It's defiantly not for everyone though :)
You don't lose experience when you level. It's played like in an RPG game where you gain the level after 5xp. I agree that more than two people gets boring between turns. I also agree that this is heavily based on luck.
Hmmm.... He doesn't like that you're not involved when it's not your turn. Kind of like Zombie Dice, which he reviewed positively? Man he's really beating on this game for really no reason. And to say "roll them yourself!" about the dungeon master rolling the dice. Relax, man! It's just a game. The game is just adding a little more welcome flavor to the basic dice rolling games.
For dice tower standards, this is what you call a "scathing review" x'D No, but really, I do really really like the concept and I'll still play this, but Tom does make some really good points.
In Zombie Dice, all you do is watch people as well, and the press your luck choices seem really easy/obvious. In this game, it is much more subtle. I think Tom was playing too cautiously. In this game, if you have treasure, you really need to go for the next level because often times it can lead to more riches if you get a good roll.
I've only played it twice so far, so I can't tell yet if the luck factor is going to become a problem. One error in your review: you don't spend 5 XP to level up. You automatically level up once you reach 5 XP. You never have to think about whether it's "worth it".
Meh, it's a dice game similar to Martian and Zombie dice that requires a little more thinking. There are times in our game sessions where these go over well, such as when folks are being very chatty and not able to fully concentrate on a game. You take a turn, then go back to chatting. Of if people are eating. I don't worry about the dirty hands factor with my dice games, as dice can easily be washed. I didn't have expectations that this game would be anything more.
Another Kickstarter flop. I don't understand how games like this get funded because I could see there wasn't a game here from the Kickstarter page. Oh well, someday people will stop backing everything on Kickstarter.
I find this to be a great filler game to two players. Sure, there's luck, it's called press your LUCK! Not Press your WELL PLANNED STRATEGY. ;-) I like it and I think you might like it more with not having to PAY for your upgraded character. There are decisions to be made, is it worth just opening that one treasure box or saving that die? Should you try to re-roll some of those dice and get a better result or wait for later. I find it just as fun as Incan Gold or Can't Stop.
I don't understand why you don't lose 5 exp while leveling your hero. Having a choice of losing 5 exp for better power would make for a more interesting game, since you have an actual decision to make. It feels like you have few real choices in this game, after a few games you will learn the best options for a given situations, then there is only luck left.
I played it last night at my group and it was ok, but not great. I liked that there was a little more to it than something like Zombie Dice, but I agree that it didn't work well with four players. I'd definitely say it works better as a solitaire or with no more than two players.
i've seen loads of your reviews but this one was the worst..Most games involve waiting out till it's your turn...wtf? it's part of gaming.. this one is a great filler with a bit more to it than Zombie dice or similar games.. Like Adi says: Simple and fun.. As far as pushing luck goes..the things you talked about are exactly that..pushing your luck...if that never worked out why even bother playing games like this?It should actually work every once in a while..i've seen someone win a game on Zombie dice on the first turn because she pushed her luck..nobody did anything during her turn but it was hilarious and super fun too actually see her roll and keep on rolling.. Maybe you should try and play this with friends and a beer instead of your daughter and a soda...

I love this channel it makes me wish I had friends.
Do what I did; initiate a non-profit board game association with periodic game nights :) Great response from the community.

Best explanation for quaffing comes from Terry Prattchet.
"it's like drinking but you spill more"

So compare Dungeon Roll to Zombie Dice, which one is better any why?

you know I never noticed that before, but it would be nice to hear from her every so often, maybe even a feature of her own once in a while.
Another aspect of the Luck Factor that often gets overlooked is the Heroes. Some of them are heads and shoulders better than others. In my groups experience the Scout has won every time someone has played it.

got a a major rule error with 5xp upgrade, think the character cards make this game much more fun. It's super quick to play.
Where do you get this game??
There should be some sort of action that the dungeon can take, other than rolling the dice...
Maybe some sort of random 'boss' card drawn each level or something that gives the dungeon some sort of twister?

Huh. I figured this would review well with Tom, since he seemed to like Zombie Dice quite a bit.
I can see it fitting the place in my collection for a no player interaction filler. They could have made it have more player interaction / backstabbing like King of Tokyo but sometimes its just nice to play a really quick filler game that's more laid back (more like Yahtzee is). hence the genre push your "luck" it's not push your skill :P
I've only ever played it as a solo game and I thought it was pretty fun.
I would like to see an expansion that adds interactive elements. Something like traps or spells to hinder another player.
This looks cool! I have Zombie Dice, and want something with a little more oomph. This nay be it ;) I don't do heavy games
Hmmm.... He doesn't like that you're not involved when it's not your turn. Kind of like Zombie Dice, which he reviewed positively? Man he's really beating on this game for really no reason. Fix for the boring in a 4 player game, use two sets of dice and have a different opponent roll your dungeon dice for you each 'delve'.
This is a very fun, very solid game... for 1 - 2 players. Any more and it does get boring. However, for 1 to 2 players fun times will be had.
Eh you dare scoff at the mighty Tom!
In Martian Dice there is more choice. Dungeon Roll is basically auto pilot.
For dice tower standards, this is what you call a "scathing review" x'D No, but really, I do really really like the concept and I'll still play this, but Tom does make some really good points.
Can't wait for my copy :)
Levelling up is done by meeting the requirement, not paying it.
It's be cool if they plan expansions too!
You can stand the cards up to make them easier to remove.
I've only played it twice so far, so I can't tell yet if the luck factor is going to become a problem. One error in your review: you don't spend 5 XP to level up. You automatically level up once you reach 5 XP. You never have to think about whether it's "worth it".
lol it's such a simple game...yet I love it!
Bonus: It's simple enough for my dad to play! >.
[sarcasm]So do you have to actually spend the 5 xp to level? I wish someone would tell me.[/sarcasm]
A dice game lucky? No way!

Not wise, but what do you do, if you can't use, because it's so specific? That's the problem.
Another Kickstarter flop. I don't understand how games like this get funded because I could see there wasn't a game here from the Kickstarter page. Oh well, someday people will stop backing everything on Kickstarter.
Tom, good review. But please let Melody speak. Everytime she tries to say something, you cut her off.

Why did this guy's comment get marked as spam? Someone disagrees with Tom and OH NO'S! THE INTERWEBS IS FALLING! or something? xP

i dont find the 4 player game any more boring than waiting for my turn to come in a game like legendary.
It's a fun & cheap filler game. I like it.
Because it has a real push your luck aspect. This... not so much.
Checking the price on this game....not worth the $25+ dollars being asked for it. Not enough components to merit a high cost like that.
This is a light between games game, it is not suppose to be fantastic. I would still rather play this than zombie dice.
It's not wise to make it through a whole game without using your special abilities.
i've seen loads of your reviews but this one was the worst..Most games involve waiting out till it's your turn...wtf? it's part of gaming..

This must be the worst review I have ever seen.
Yep, compare this video with the instructional and gameplay videos from Watch It Played. Rodney really made me want to buy this game.
Aww, disappointing!
