    O Christ our God, You are worshiped at all times and in all places and are glorified both in heaven and on earth. You are patient, generous in mercy, rich in compassion, loving to the just and merciful to the sinner. You call all of us to repentance through the promise of blessings to come.O Lord, receive our supplications at this very hour. Direct our lives in the way of Your commandments. Sanctify our souls, purify our bodies, set our minds aright, cleanse our thoughts, deliver us from all affliction, wrath, danger and need. Surround us with Your holy angels, so that, guided and guarded by their ranks, we may reach unity of the faith and the knowledge of Your unutterable glory. You are blessed unto ages of ages. Amen

    A more direct translation of what is being sung is: Jesus, Jesus, Son of God, love/have mercy, love/have mercy upon us.
    EDIT: The literal translation of this prayer is: Jesus, Jesus, Son of God, have mercy, have mercy, upon us.
    What I have written above is an interpretation based on the etymology and utility of old church slavonic and multiple slavic languages, not a direct translation of the Ukrainian. If you're curious about it, read the comment chain below. I eventually conceded my position when I realized that the Jesus prayer originates in Greek and not Old Church Slavonic but I maintain that an interpretation of love can be added to the prayer.

      THANK YOU!

    • @nickkraw1
      @nickkraw1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Олекса Петренко Thats literally what my translation says. But wouldn’t you say that pomiluy has a connotation of love that doesn’t translate well into English? Consider that in Polish and other Slavic languages that are phonetically related to Ukrainian and Russian, the word for love is milosc. Or if I want to say in Ukrainian “she is nice” I would say вона мила, “onna myla”. These words for love, loving, nice, kind, all seem to have the same etymological root as “pomiluy” which means to have mercy. And I think that because of that, at least to me, it comes across whenever I pray in Ukrainian or Russian or Polish or Slavonic. Whereas in English, “have mercy” just doesn’t have that sense of love built into it in the same way. Thus, in my translation I said: love/have mercy, cause it’s like we’re asking Him to love us as well. What do you think of this?

    • @nickkraw1
      @nickkraw1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Олекса Петренко On the surface yes, you are right. You are right.
      Yet I think that there is likely a deeper meaning that we can appreciate here, because in West Slavic languages, love or to love is miłość, milujem,
      milovat (Polish, Slovak, Czech). Love is only variations of любов in East or South Slavic languages. Both West and East retain versions of кохання as love in a verb form.
      But the thing is, all of these languages derived from Proto-Slavic and Old Church Slavonic, and the Jesus prayer is much older than any of these languages and was originally a Slavonic prayer. So I think that there is definitely an etymological relation to love in the word помилуй.
      Its like how in English prayers, you can often investigate the original Latin or German words from which the English word is derived, and uncover a richer meaning.
      I decided to actually look it up on this website, it is a dictionary of Old Church Slavonic:
      lrc.la.utexas.edu/eieol_base_form_dictionary/ocsol/13
      миловати is the word for have mercy,
      But today in Serbian and Croatian, the same word миловати means to lovingly caress or even to fondle:
      en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%D0%BC%D0%B8%D0%BB%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B0%D1%82%D0%B8
      You are right about the current meaning of помилуй in Ukrainian, and what you say is true, but regardless of its current meaning, the word помилуй is deeply etymologically related to love and affection, and that is seen throughout Slavic languages. I think that we can enrich ourstanding and deepen our prayer by looking at the roots of the words from very old prayers, just we can in English or Romance Languages.
      Jesus wants to love us intensely and passionately, not just have mercy on us like an apathetic judge. I am not suggesting that you believe otherwise, I'm just pointing out that He does desire loving union with us. So why not reflect on that while praying the Jesus prayer?

    • @nickkraw1
      @nickkraw1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Олекса Петренко I am talking about interpretation of the words in a prayer, not trying to correct you on the literal meaning of помилуй. I said in my last comment that you are correct about the literal meaning at least 3 times. I know from your username that you are a Ukrainian. I should clarify that I am referring to an interpretation rather than a translation, so I am sorry if I have offended you, please forgive me.

    • @nickkraw1
      @nickkraw1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Олекса Петренко I did not realize that the Jesus prayer has Greek origins. I will concede because my argument from slavic etymology doesn't carry over to Greek. Perhaps you are right about its original intention, and I say again that you are right about the translation. I was incorrect when I originally used the word translation. Thank you for discussing with me, I learned a lot throughout. May God bless you.
      Yet even still, even in English, I think that the Jesus prayer can be interpreted to reflect a union of love. This is the basis of theosis and striving to enter into intimate union with God that is central to the Jesus prayer. I absolutely disagree with you that to cry unto the Lord seeking His love and affection is prideful. To be honest, it isn’t even asking Him to do anything that He doesn’t already do, for He does love you, and I want to thank Him for having received the grace to love Him, and tell Him that I love Him too. Jesus wants to have a spousal and intimate union with you that is more "touchy-feely" that the most passionate love between husband and wife. This is made very clear in Ephesians 5 by St Paul. The Lord remembers His beloved faithful even more tenderly than a mother remembers her baby who is nursing at her breast (Isiah 49:15). The Jesus prayer is exceptional, because it is a prayer of glorification that acknowledges Jesus as Lord and Son of God, it is an exorcism that calls upon His mighty Name, it is a petition because it asks Him to have mercy upon us, it is a prayer of humility and a prayer of repentance because we ask for mercy and acknowledge our own sinfulness and weakness, and I really do believe that it is possible to pray it in such a way that it becomes a union of love as well, where every repetition is like a kiss. It is precisely by our union with God that we become divinized in theosis, and it is only in marriage that two can become one flesh. I think that slavic languages lend themselves well to this interpretation because of the etymology of polymuy. I am going to edit my original comment so as not to mislead or confuse people, but leave what I originally wrote, even if I was incorrect to call it an interpretation, so that people can see and read our comment chain and it makes sense.

      Sure. The wording goes like this. "Isuse Isuse, sinu bozhji, pomiluj pomiluj nas." I hope that I wrote the letters that are in slavic language good enough to pronounce them in the same way. 🙏

    • @frangomares
      @frangomares 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Ісусе, сину Божий, помилуй нас. (o Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on us) Pronunciation is very clear, the part that you may find more difficult is Божий (of God) the third letter, ж, sounds similar to the s in measure. The i is similar to the ee in see, и is similar to the i in sit, and й is similar to the y in say. /isuse, isuse, sinu bozhij, pomiluj, pomiluy nas/

      @@fatherlazarus9296 I have never heard this interpretation in my entire life. This Icon is called Christ Pantocrator, and it is traditionally meant to represent Christ's two natures, not the final judgement. May I ask where you learned that it relates to the Final Judgement?
