  • Polluted Paradise, New Zealand (Part 1) - People and Power
    New Zealand's pristine and abundant rivers and lakes have long been central to its proud reputation as a land of breath-taking natural beauty - and fundamental to a clean, green, outdoorsy brand that's used to attract millions of foreign visitors every year.
    But are its waterways really as sparkling and bountiful as the tourist ads suggest?
    It seems not.
    Although the issue hasn't attracted huge global attention, for some years now campaign groups such as Greenpeace have been ringing alarm bells about the deteriorating quality - and curiously diminishing volume - of New Zealand's fresh water, problems they say are both directly attributable to the country's most profitable industry and in danger of being exacerbated by government-backed projects in support of that industry.
    People & Power asked filmmaker Naashon Zalk to find out more. His two-part investigation, which we are screening over consecutive episodes, raises troubling questions about what can happen when a nation's desire for economic growth, however understandable and justifiable it may be, takes undue precedence over the environment.

    I lived in NZ for 8 months. I have been told by locals that NZ has lots of polluted parts that tourist rarely go to or see and unless you're a local you'll never know. Its being swept under the carpet for image. I love NZ with all my heart and to see it being destroyed slowly for short economical gains is saddening. I understand farming is big business but the government and local council should really tread lightly and not follow suit like the USA did with pollution and environment. If the land and water goes, it may never recover.

    I'm in NZ. It is true that NZ's clean green image is a grand lie. Just the 1080 issue smashes that myth, but agriculture is the biggest polluter. We could have more of a permaculture system with far less nitrates, but farmers want the yields now and it's the debt that's pushing them. We also have high farmer suicide rates. The doco says the Cow population equals Japan, but i went to Japan and it is a clean country (setting Fukashima aside). NZ is being milked and it's not the cows. The garbage crop of politicians we have would sell their grandmothers for a selfie shot and a few FB likes. The Greens are the worst. Claiming everything for the environment and doing virtually nothing but play the identity politics game. This country is in a lot of trouble and inept leadership is the true cause.

    I would say that you and both sides of this debate completely missed the main problem. It is not dams or cows, it is the complete lack of trees between the cows and the water. You need a buffer zone guys.
    I am Canadian and have been to NZ. It is a beautiful country. Too many trees have been cut there though. It is just like Europe. You need a forest to treat your run off water. Let the nitrogen and phosphorous grow your kauri trees and those fern trees back along with all the Kiwis (birds) and other wildlife that naturally lives there. It is better to grow a forest up quickly with all those nutrients then to grow algae and kill your water.
    The shade will reduce your need for so much irrigation too.
    I know land is expensive in NZ so you need to work every inch but still... No point in destryoing the water that gives you life mate!

    while many cite the gas emissions as the main problem the main problem with cows is the runoff of their excrement/ run off of harmful chemicals used on the farms and water use in animal farming is ultimately overstated because that water goes straight back into the ground after said animal dies and instead of relying on dams and farms there should be an effort to diversify and modernize our economy

    DIGESTING FARM RUNOFF: When nitrogen and phosphorus are not fully utilized by the growing plants, they can be lost from the farm fields and negatively impact the air, and water quality downstream. Over time this excess nitrogen and phosphorus can be washed from farm fields and into waterways during rain and snow-melt, and can also leach through the soil and into groundwater and acquifers. Agricultural Nitrate and Phospate rich runoff from dairy farms in particular is a problem in New Zealand and other countries. Permaculture “digestor” leach ponds with reeds prior to the actual water entering the streams act as water purifying systems. These could themselves be dug out dried and shredded to be used for fertilizer + soil organic matter soil amendment once a year. By increasing the soil carbon and microbiome this will make the soil more aerobic and reduce the runoff of “unprocessed” nutrient flow. Combine this by following up with shallow pebble bed rapids to increase oxygen in the water will clean up the water prior to it exiting the farm. When farms emit nutrient dense effluent flow it is because systems for nutrient “digestion” and capture on the land are insufficient...it is a "design issue."

      @CosmicGamesspace 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unfortunately almond milk will also cause problems for our health as well. I know it all too well. Had a nut milk business. Even if you soak and sprout almonds (as opposed to boxed milk) you are still ingested a lot of phytic acid and other anti nutrients. Made me very nutrient depleted - on top of being on the vegan diet...:(

      to many people on this earth and they all do need food, al the parts of this world will have to be used for farming to feed them all and if the population grows to 10 billion people it only gets worse. Almonds grow only in good weather conditions, in the USA they need to irrigate these almond orchards with water from very deep wells so they run out of water. Here, in New Zealand we grow gras so we have animals that eat gras and produce milk and meat and wol, and yes, if possible, it should be done without polution. But your idea leads to starvation for the hungry

    The other problem New Zealand has is poor urban planning, prioritising mass urban sprawl over environmental and scenic values. In New Zealand they have built housing developments in scenic areas for profit at an expensive of ruining the environment and the very thing that made the country a nice place to live.

  • @davedrewett2196
    @davedrewett2196 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    It’s not from the cattle. It’s from water soluble chemical fertiliser. You don’t need to fertilise cow pastures with bought fertiliser. The grasses themselves produce enough sugars through the roots to do that and that cattle then don’t produce the nitrites in quantities to cause nutrification of waterways. The farmers are being led up the garden path. With chemical fertiliser you get an increase in productivity but the farmers don’t get the profit from that, the agrichemical companies make all that. There are also increases in vet costs due to metabolic issues. The solution is very simple. Holistically planned grazing. There are enough properties in nz to monitor the results of this. Farmers don’t make money from nutrients running off their land.
    If they go to a holistic planned grazing model they will produce less milk but of a higher quality, the cows health will be better not eating grass full of toxic nitrogen, the farmer will make more money via less input costs. This money will all be spent in the local economy unlike the profit the fertiliser company was making.
    The end result will be that you will still have a viable dairy industry and clean waterways. This is not rocket science.

    Objectively, it certainly seems maintaining human population at a lower level, say by a factor of 100 or so, would have prevented almost every environmental problem. Almost every one has been indoctrinated to believe something else though. How can you contemplate population ecology and not think at all about the sustainable number of individuals making up the population? It seems to be the first thing you learn, if it's not a human population or a population like cattle that exist to serve an enormous human population. In the latter cases, the only principle would seem to be, "the sky is no limit".

Flush out the major parties and bring in a new party where no land is sold to foreigners and the number one policy should be to house everyone with 1% interest on their first home. The next major policy should be to shrink the meat and milk production industries to 10% of what they are now.
