    As a New Zealander who worked for a government section as an environmental scientist I say THANK YOU Al Jazeera for exposing Nick Smith for the lying crook that he is, corruption from the right wing of government to appease their personal business interests has gone on for too long. Time for change, time to respect or environment, aroha and kaitiakitanga, Kia kaha whanau.

      The National government then went on to attack Labour with misleading political adverts during the current election on lied about taxes, instead of the elephant in the room, water pollution. Sadly the lies worked and the gullible New Zealand public fell for it.
      Another 3 years of this government will be an utter disaster for the environment.
      Please don't buy dairy products from New Zealand and please write to the NZ government to tell them why you are boycotting them.

    Every country should go back to what has worked for thousands of years like producing for the community you live in. Importing and exporting food makes no sense and does way too much damage.

      Being better self sufficient or reliant is all well in good in theory, but the problem is that resources are finite by region and they have to come from somewhere. I do like me some Italian wine and PS4.

    New Zealand has had a reputation as a world class pollution free country with a great future. It seems they are willing to irrevocably destroy that reputation for profit. What a shame.

    FARM RUNOFF: When nitrogen and phosphorus are not fully utilized by the growing plants, they can be lost from the farm fields and negatively impact air and downstream water quality. Over time this excess nitrogen and phosphorus can be washed from farm fields and into waterways during rain and snow-melt, and can also leach through the soil and into groundwater. Agricultural Nitrate and Phospate rich runoff from dairy farms in particular is a problem in New Zealand and other countries. Permaculture “digestor” leach ponds with reeds prior to the actual water entering the streams act as water purifying systems. These could themselves be dug out dried and shredded to be used for fertilizer + soil organic matter soil amendment once a year. Increased carbon and soil microbiome will make the soil more aerobic and reduce the runoff of “unprocessed” nutrient flow. Combine this by following up with shallow pebble bed rapids to increase oxygen in the water will clean up the water prior to it exiting the farm. When farms emit nutrient dense effluent flow it is because systems for nutrient “digestion” and capture on the land is insufficient.

    The story was going well till the end when a river was being talked to. He said the river is him. Ok then go underwater and see if you don't drown.

    • @KlausBahnhof
      @KlausBahnhof 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You clearly do not understand the indigenous perspective on the world. We are not separate from the world, we are part of it. The belief that we are somehow superior is at the root of the natural destruction seen in the film.

    • @Justyburger
      @Justyburger 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KlausBahnhof Clearly you have no concept of reality. The river is a river and a Man is a Man. Yes they make up one giant holistic system at it's base, but the river is NOT the Man. If you want to believe mumbo jumbo, go right ahead, but leave me out of it.

    • @nathanbutcher5263
      @nathanbutcher5263 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No one should have trouble with the concept that the river and the man are inseparable, part of the same being. It is the only rational way to look at the relationship. Nature is not apart from us- it is a part of us. If we are to survive we must quit holding ourselves as seperate entities outside of, and more important than, nature. It is that hubris, that break with the earth, that is poisoning us now and will kill our children wholesale. When the river is poisoned we are poisoned. When the river dies we die. So for the rational being, they and the river are the same and have the same value. We are so intrinsically linked to our environment that a being who spends their entire life on one river may as well be more truly related to that river than their own flesh and blood family. At least your very life does not depend on the continued existence of most family members like it does the river, soil, and air. When tribal peoples say they are closely related to the land they are not only correct, they see things much more clearly than those who continue to hold themselves apart from nature. We desperately need to come back into harmony with the environment. Too long have we ruined a place without care because there is always another place, right? That time has come to an end! We have run out of places to ruin without damage to ourselves. This madness should have stopped as soon as we realized the Earth was finite. Everything used MUST be replaced in a closed system or there will come an end. Therefore ONLY sustainable use of resources should be made from this point forward. A change that must be made to facilitate that future is returning to every person on earth the belief that nature is as closely linked to them as their family and MUST be protected if they want to protect themselves and their loved ones. We must immediately begin teaching the young to see the world through Maori eyes so that they realize just how important our environment is. Those that abuse the environment abuse us and poison our children so they should be held to the same standards legally as poisoners and murderers. Right now most people are waking up to the rational idea of climate and environment destruction but that is not NEARLY enough. The rational is one step removed from ourselves. We must pass on a deep EMOTIONAL attachment to the land, rivers and air so that people return to caring for them as they would themselves and protect them as feircely as they would their family! Protecting our environment can not be like a job; something you can work on sometimes and then put it out of your mind when you go home. It is a part of every breath you take, every drink of water, every single thing you eat. It follows you everywhere and is closer to you than your own skin. Until everyone belives, in their heart, that pouring chemicals into a drain can kill their own children, we are not yet where we need to be and cannot be secure in a future for mankind.

    There is hardly any water pollution! Honestly towns and cities do more damage to water than all farmers put together. Irrigation schemes are not primarily focused on dairy. The rivers all over country have dried up during summer for ever! Honestly some townies need to open their eyes.

    • @petevanderwaal8984
      @petevanderwaal8984 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Townies, my good fellow, have no choice in the matter. It is the councils that make the decisions, if you followed the videos of this issue correctly. Townies have no choice, but to go with the whimsical ideas of their council comrades. Scary thought. Have you ever asked yourself why the rivers are drying up? Possibly not!

    • @KlausBahnhof
      @KlausBahnhof 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Even though independent scientists and world environmental experts observe that our declining water quality is directly linked to dairy farming, sure, it's the townies...
