- Titanic expert Tim Maltin tells TalkTV that an implosion on the missing Titan submersible meant that death "would have been instantaneous, a quicker execution than a bullet."
Speaking to Vanessa Feltz, he says the whole situation is a "terrible tragedy" and he never thought Titanic would take five more victims over a hundred years after 1,500 people died on the ship.
A “debris field” has been discovered within the search area for the missing Titan submersible.
The US Coast Guard (USCG) said a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) made the discovery near the wreckage of the Titanic on Thursday.
The hunt for the missing deep-sea vessel is still an “active search and rescue” mission after it lost communication on Sunday.

An implosion is definitely the most humane scenario for these 5 men, certainly better than being stuck at the bottom of the ocean with no hope of being rescued.

Worse would have been if they surfaced and were floating around d undiscovered. They hatch was bolted from outside, so they would have run out of air if not released by someone outside.

The people who were killed when the Titanic sank had no reason to believe they were in danger. The Titanic was brand new, the most modern ship in the world, and was supposedly unsinkable. On the other hand, the people who went down in this homemade submersible knew, or at least should have known, that they were putting themselves in extreme danger.

James Camerons interview on the matter was very eye opening. He more or less confirmed TITAN was very VERY inferior compared to other top of the line subs which has dove deep in the ocean. Whoever came up with the idea cut a bunch of corners all for money.

The extreme pressure at that depth for a split-second during the implosion, could turn oxygen into liquid form. All oils (including body fat) are not only explosive from extreme pressure, but oils at any pressure that make contact with liquid oxygen, has an explosive reaction.
The reason I thought of this is, my Uncle was in the service during Vietnam and worked in the Motor-Pool doing vehicle maintenance. He was walking by a hazardous-materials storage area. By dumb-luck someone had accidentally spilled or released some liquid oxygen. There were "balls" of LOX bouncing outside, going everywhere. My Uncle had just cleaned up an oil-spill that morning and had oil on his boots. He inadvertently stepped on one of those ball of LOX and BOOM it blew half the sole off his boot!! Luckily it didn't damage his foot.

That's definitely not "the worst" thing to have happened in the event of a failure of the craft. That's the BEST possible thing that could have happened in the failure of the craft. At least they didn't spend 3 days dying in the cold dark bottom of the ocean having to think about their imminent deaths.

They would have easily been rescued had it been bobbing about on the ocean. They had to be bolted in due to the staggeringly huge pressures at this depth. No chance of getting out of the craft and swimming to the surface. Looks like serious engineering design faults. Should have been designed so no chance of implosion.

I had a bad feeling all along when the mother ship suddenly lost contact with the occupants that the submersible imploded. At least they didn't suffer when the end came, I hope they are at peace now, and condolences to their families and friends.
I felt claustrophobic as soon as I heard they were missing. I was also pretty certain they were either dead or about to be. The ocean is unforgiving and when you think you've tamed it even a little bit, it will remind you that you're not even close. The safety protocols and design principles are not there to create a barrier to innovation, they are written in blood.
All of this tragedy could have been avoided if the ceo had heeded to the warnings of professionals about safety and protocols he chose to ignore it .

Imploding is most humane thing to happen. They wouldn't of been aware, nor felt a thing.
Unless and onboard fire happened first, because they did not properly deal with all of that condensation around electronics, and then they fire ultimately leads to structural damage which causes implosion

I watched the making of this sub and was shocked when they explained that the titanium end caps were simply glued to the carbon fibre hull . Amazing it lasted as long as it did .
Yeah the craft looks like it was assembled in the parking lot of a Radio Shack. I’m amazed it completed any transits at all.
The carbon fiber cylinder would have bowed in the middle under the pressures it was under until it collapsed and I'm sure, shotgunned everything including the end caps and the sludge of people into the dark abyss.

PH Nargeolet was definitely an explorer. He's was one of the leads that recovered many artifacts as well as a 20-ton piece of the hull. He was one of the highly regarded underwater explorers of our generation.
There were so many red flags in the years leading up to this tragedy. The Oceangate CEO just gave himself the lifetime Darwin award.

My 15+ years working in design at General Dynamics Electric Boat (688, Trident, Seawolf submarine builder) says this "Implosion" happened within 1/10,000th of a second. The human mind can't react quick enough to register "this is happening", before it's all over.

So sad for the mom who lost her young son, and her husband at the same time. I’ve went through losing family in the same time frame before, and it’s incredibly difficult. My thoughts go out to the other victim’s families, as well.

They never knew what hit them, within microseconds, the air would have raised to hotter than the surface of the sun. It would have been faster than signals reached their brains. Then the Water would have crushed whatever was left and flushed it into the water. All faster than your brain could process
It wouldn’t have been quicker than a bullet because the implosion would require stress failure that would require moments of breakage,whereas a gunshot is only the motion of ejection. The death from implosion would be swift. But a gunshot to the head is truly instantaneous.

James Cameron said they were descending then suddenly dropped their weights strongly indicating they had an indication they were in trouble.
I live in a rural area outside of Austin, Tx. I think so many of us are watching and invested in this story isnt because they are wealthy or because of WHO they are but rather...because the idea of ANY human dying that way is horrific. It was fairly obvious that this situation was going to end in tears.
I was fairly confident that the vessel had imploded when I first heard what had happened. It was always the main risk.
The guys on board knew the risks they were taking but chose to do it anyway. They even signed a death waver.

Without going into gruesome detail, the crew had their bodies pushed to their absolute limits right until their their ends several minutes later.
However, that was a much larger vessel at much less depth.
Meanwhile, Titan was a tiny vessel sat right on the seafloor. It likely popped like a grape in the microwave, as horrible as that sounds... I'm not sure how else to describe what I think the implosion was like that'd be that much better at doing such.

I encourage everyone to actually look into the Titan. This vessel had lots of issues prior to this particular trip and Stockton ignored a lot of safety issues and concerns. It's pretty crazy. The Titan itself hadn't been checked by an regulatory body before taking these dives. Sad tragedy that could have possibly been avoided.

Truly devastated for the young boys family. He didn’t want to go. This was his father’s obsession and he told his auntie that he really didn’t not want to go on this trip.

A couple of years ago American film crew decided not to go down to the Titanic because the presenter felt this sub was not up to the job. I think it was CBS who interviewed him. I watched it online.

But this wasn't a scientific exploration. It was tourism. The CEO was trying to make money using a submersible he build and did not test thoroughly, if at all. It was 4 people being told the sub was safe, but anything could happen. I know deep sea exploration is extremely dangerous, but I would at least like to know if the sub was extensively tested and researched before I climbed into it.

From 14,7 psi to 5200 psi would have been an instant death, no question. When the hull failed it would have been over in milliseconds.

The Titan is equipped with plexiglass. The thing about plexiglass is that you will see and hear cracks first before it fails due to the pressure.
Implosion best outcome, but they likely had a horrible few seconds of realisation before it happened.

We'll never really know how quick it was. The evidence suggests that they had jettisoned their ballast and were attempting to surface when the vessel imploded. So it seems likely that they were aware of being in critical danger before their end. The fact that a `bang' was recorded at the time all contact was lost suggests an instantaneous failure and corresponding death. But there may have been many desperate seconds of delamination creaking and water seepage before the final coupe-de grace...
So refreshing to realize death was simply an execution by bullet.
Being the least risk taker of anyone I know, it is a stretch for me to understand why anyone needs to see up close, in person, what they can see on film/video. It does not require to be in physical closeness to a shark, I can witness it in a picture. Baffling!

Actually the Titanic had the required number of lifeboats standard to other ships at that time. When a ship usually sinks, it leans to either one side, making the launch of half the lifeboats on the ship impossible. Since the transatlantic crossing was a virtual highway of ships, it was decided that on all ships, instead of overloading the vessel with life boats, adequate numbers were provided to ferry passengers to a rescue boat then go back for more passengers.

The Titan was originally certified to 3000 metres then, as far as the available information suggests, this was increased to 4000 metres without modification. It has made 13 dives to the Titanic before this one. This means it exceeded its crush depth 14 times, as the depth was 300 metres deeper than original testing. What has happened looks like the vessel has been weakened by over stressing the structure too many times. The result is a catastrophic failure which ended with implosion. The occupants may have heard the failure but the speed of the implosion due to the pressure would have been so fast that their brains probably hadn't the time to process what was happening. In a way it was a mercifully quick and painless death. My prayers and condolences to the family and friends of the occupants, may they rest in peace.

The speed at which the implosion took place means that the air inside was compressed, heating it to temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun. Anything inside would have been instantly vaporised.

@@giselefranca3182I think the problem is that these were international waters, with no country’s regulations over it, and the submersible was classified as experimental. Whatever loopholes OceanGate was able to take advantage of to get out of regulation and certification, I’m thinking the loophole will be closing. This incident shows that regulations are needed in international waters and for commercial submersibles.

The world has been in suspense for days, but ironically, the 5 men never knew it happened, so they died feeling excited and optimistic. Considering the possibilities, it was a preferable death.

Better way to go. Supposedly the pressure liquefied them to mere atoms within milliseconds. It's probably the most messier yet most humane ways to go. Unless there were alarms alerting them of the impending implosion..they didn't know what hit them.
