    I had no idea that people could get so upset about food and nutrition until I saw the comments for this video. I think everyone could do with taking it down a few notches.

      +Mostafa Shakal An unfertilised egg is basically a hen's period. The chicken has no use for it at all and it will either sit and rot or get damaged and then eaten (because chickens eat just about anything - not because they need any nutrients from it).Taking eggs from a chicken is fine and nothing like taking milk from a cow which you can only do by impregnating the cow and removing its calf.

    • @smshdchrb

      +Mostafa Shakal Why on earth would you want to though? Yeah, it's a miraculous liquid, perfectly balanced full of all the right hormones, nutrients and minerals to promote health, strength and growth, I know... but ONLY IF YOU'RE A F***ING BABY COW!

      +Mostafa Shakal You could always buy human breast milk if you want something that's good for growth and ethical. I warn you though it doesn't taste very nice.

    Well researched and presented! As a former strength and conditioning coach I have had this type of argument thousands of times with my pro athlete clients. Thank you for explaining the fact that proteins are made of amino acids and that the goal is to consume amino acids and not all foods provide the correct forms of amino acids. You always hear "I eat protein. I love rice!" Well nice try but you are missing some parts. Compliment the rice with beans and you're all set. Great work guys!!!

    Wow! Having read these comments some are missing the point and some have very strange ideas!
    This video is great (well done guys) for people who are learning or want to learn/ improve.
    They are not saying eat meat they very clearly said (reading between the lines) you need protein regardless of your meat views and if you can't get it from one source it's available by supplements or mixing other food sources ie: nuts, grains, pulses etc!
    These guys are not going to make a video without checking the numbers, and if you know anything about nutrition it varies from person to person as we are all individuals! For those unsure the main food groups are...fats, proteins, carbs, fibre,vitamins and minerals just pix n mix! What works for you is great but stop pushing beliefs!
    But we all know a cyclist diet is coffee and cake based!
    Merry happy holidays everyone!
    Again great work GCN! Now where's that like button...

    i train 3,5 hrs a day (2hrs on the bike 1,5 hrs in the gym) and i'm fine at 100g of protein per day. #ctfu btw 3g of leucine are only 175g of raw lentils.. so if you make a lentil soup after your ride, you can easily cover all your protein needs and compared to protein powders its jummy and filling too. i dont think that video is that bad as ppl say in the comment section, since they mention that you can get ALL YOUR protein needs on nearly any kind of well balanced diet...

  • @tomituominen9985
    @tomituominen9985 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    This video was basically a commercial for the supplement that you featured in the video. You used chickpeas as an example of an "incomplete" protein and were worried about essential amino acids. If you would have done your homework you would have noticed that even if you eat nothing but chickpeas you would still get more than sufficient amounts of total protein (150g in 3000kcal) and way more than the daily recommendations for each essential amino acid. Actually, you would also get 11g of leucine, of which you seemed to be worried specifically. An even more extreme example: eat just potatoes, and you would still get enough protein and all the essential amino acids (60g protein and 4g leucine in 3000kcal). Furthermore, you could have mentioned how much calories riders consume during the TdF: about 7000kcal a day. No one watching your videos needs these amounts daily, and surely they will not need the ridiculously high 3g protein per kg of body weight.

    I think you should check on Katie Compton about things related to protein, more specifically what the difference of folate and folic acid can make for some people.
    Great to watch cycling stuff in youtube, with this weather. Tomorrow its cycling again so thanks for a chance now to be cosy and warm watching your shows on a sofa.
    By the way, could you consider to venture up north to make some testing on cycling with studded tires. Interesting factors would be to compare e.g. the wattage differences between a sleek and a studded ones. Maybe that could be tested on a trainer even.

    I think the product placement is too obvious in this vid xD.
    I can understand the feedback as Ive sent thousands of crew over to GCN as GCN has incredible info otherwise but this vid didnt meet the GCN standard of legit info. :(
    Lets clear up some facts that are all easy to google in a few min.
    1. ALL whole plant foods contain ALL the essential amino acids.
    2. The incomplete protein myth was debunked back in the 80's by the very author who started that myth - Frances Lappe Moore.
    3. Pro cyclists and runners abuse corticosteroids so they can DECREASE muscle mass not build it. (name one GC contender who looks more muscular now than when they were 21 answer: NONE of them.)
    4. If you eat like a lean Kenyan - rice, sugar, bananas, steamed potatoes etc then you will look like a lean Kenyan.
    5. If you eat like a fat aussie aka bacon, fish chips, sausage, steak, dairy etc then you will look like a fat aussie.

      +durianrider I honestly think each to their own. If it works for you it works for you if it doesn't it doesn't.

      Oh Durianrider do you or have you ever taken protein supplements? just curious

    • @Notinserviceij
      @Notinserviceij 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I have nothing wrong with or against durianrider, so your emotional attack is unnecessary
      1. I see how you can think that, 'If' i had the mentality all the time then yeah that would be pretty stupid don't you think?
      To have one mentality....
      IN CONTEXT which is diet, it is most certainly each to their own, it's what works best for them. I eat meat, in my opinion there is nothing wrong with that i also eat vegetables nothing wrong with that. Both are natural things, both are living growing things.
      Anyway im not here to debate Vegan against the rest thing as i'm sure Durianrider will put me in my amateur place
      2. For starters the human species happens to be at the top of the food chain.
      A Lion for starters eats meat, other animals, right?
      By your logic you seem to be forgetting that when we were forming as a species we would also eat meat of others and even ourselves, so essentially your argument is going against your new found beliefs.
      3 Now i never said anything about calories, I know that already everyone who did basic year 10 PE knows that.
      Just like everyone should know there are three main fuels, Carbs, fats and proteins.
      You need all three to function efficiently, as i'm sure you'd know. So fat intake is just as important as carb intake same with protein. It all goes hand in hand.
      so yeah derrr you need carbs i never said you didn't
      4. I hate the logic of "if you want to became as fit as...." That's an issue. When you start comparing someone else's fitness and health that's when you have missed the point entirely. All this is about improving oneself not trying to be "as fit" as someone. Now you do realize people have different body shapes and different chemical reactions in their body and about 10, 000 other different things we have going on in our body, its what makes us different and unique after all.
      So it's what you feel like, if you want a Big Mac eat a Big Mac, it may clog your arteries but that's not your choice to make.
      To finish and to go back to your starting point please think about what you say, my intention isn't to start a fight or anything like that, but when you insult my logic with a bunch out of context bullshit then I won't be such a nice person.
      And MATE if you think you can change my ideas on life and other ways of me living it in a comments section on TH-cam on the internet when you don't know a thing about me or my way of life then you must have one big mother of an EGO
      So have a nice day!
      Cheers
      Jimmi

      +ilikewasabe You do realise that if you "don't eat meat or any other animal products" then that, by definition makes you a dietary vegan. It doesn't matter what you say or think, that is the definition of a dietary vegan. If you don't use any other animal product then you are a vegan. I absolutely applaude your choices, I'm a vegan myself and not afraid to admit it or label myself as such. You're either confused or attention seeking by posting comments such as your original on the internet , but either way you are at least a dietary vegan. Face it. Well done, but face it.

The only related claim they made is that intake of protein intake, particularly protein that includes the amino acid leucine, is important after a workout to stimulate muscle growth. From the study below, " After exercise, recovery of muscle protein synthesis requires dietary protein or BCAA to increase tissue levels of leucine in order to release the inhibition of the initiation factor 4 complex through activation of the protein kinase..."

    At 4 min :34 seconds they say you need to eat nuts to absorb leucine. But, the example is peanuts. Which are more closely related to legumes, right? So, should it really be nuts like almonds, walnuts, or pecans?

  • @matthewkitchen10
    @matthewkitchen10 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    High leucine foods include cheese, soybeans, beef, chicken, pork, nuts, seeds, fish, seafood, and beans. The recommended daily intake for leucine is 39mg per kilogram of body weight, or 17.7mg per pound. A person weighting 70kg (~154 pounds) should consume around 2730mg of leucine per day.

    I am concerned with a piece of information that you gave in the video: a human can digest only 20g of protein per hour. if that is correct, then using the 1.5g protein per kg of body weight per day formula, I would have to eat 8+ meals per day (I am 108kg)! Well, good on ya! I tried to go full veggie for a month or so, but that was all I could do, because I felt kind of "sick" in the end. Not very good at all. The reason for this is not clear to me, but some time a go I read an article that said something about that there's at least two body types out there in the pool of humanity. One mainly omnivore and the other mainly vegetarian. So it might be the reason why I felt bad.
      I don't know if the science behind the article was/is BS or not.

    • @danish_watts
      @danish_watts 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Runar Damnes there are only one body type! And that body eats plants, you need to eat more on a plantbased diet to get enough kcal!

    I'm confused here - They state the body can only absorb around 20g of protein per hour, but they also state that for their day after day endurance rides they would need 210g of protein per day, so to satisfy that they would need to consume the 210g of protein across 11 hours?

  • @helicart

    Your nutritional advisors are about 30 years behind on their reading of the literature with the legume/grain combining to get all amino acids. You do need both, but you don't have to get them in the same meal. If you want to broadcast information to a large audience, you would be wise to get more than one opinion, just as you would for a story on the less important best chain lubricant.

  • @Lancew4

    So if I'm doing some tour riding and out on the bike for 4-6 hours for some consecutive days is there a way of getting a protein hit on the ride?
    I mean a nice coffee stop latte sounds like a great idea every hour but might slow progress.

  • @brannmacfinnchad9056

    A liter of milk...which is what goes into about 1/4th lb of cheese.
    Much easier to enjoy when kicking back after a ride. No idea if the amino acids/proteins survive aging or if there is some breaking down, though.

    Hi. A lot many people talk about the advantages of sports nutrition coming in the forms of gels, bars and powders and they being economical, but, to state a fact, it isn't so in India. As most of these products come from abroad, one serving costs anywhere between Rs.100 to Rs.150. So, if you are to have at least 3 servings on a day-long ride, that sums up to be not so an economical advantage considering you also have to keep money aside for the 'real' food as well.
    Be obliged if you could talk about concocting natural food and the split as to when to have in full-day rides.
    I like touring and though I am yet to go on multi-day tours, but one ride lasts for anywhere between 80 to 120 kms and I have noticed that the other half of the day doesn't get to be all that fun compared to the first half.

      @gcn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi neelesh, you make a great point and actually something we've always been careful to say as well is the importance of eating "real food" on a ride. We've already got some videos on easy homemade snacks you can take with you on a ride if you search for them, and a few more will be coming out soon too :)

    Actually an excess of protein can damage one's kidneys, I suffer from a Stage 2 kidney disease. Please don't advise people to eat more than 1g per kg per day without medical supervision. Athletes should at least test their creatinine and urea to check that their kidneys are functioning properly specially if they struggle to recover from long/intensive workouts (feeling tired more that 2 days later)

    • @smachsimo
      @smachsimo 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      After some additional reading, it's seem there is no link between increased protein intake and kidney disease for HEALTHY individuals. Studies show however that high protein intake will further damage kidneys for people suffering from chronic kidney disease www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1262767/

    If you have excess protein you don't excrete it. You either burn it off as energy(it actually gets turned into glucose, a type of carbohydrate) or gets stored as fat.

    numbers don't add up and contradictory.
    20g maximum absorption every 2 hours (being generous).
    16 waking hours, so 9 2-hour windows (not how people eat).
    9*20 = 180g protein maximum.
    70kg @ 1.5g = 105g.
    70kg @ 3g = 210g - what they say is right for them!

    • @Maxmaxz
      @Maxmaxz 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +B1945418525518
      16 waking hours would be 8 two-hour windows wouldn't it? Unless you're including a two-hour window after going to bed (which might be sensible), in which case you'd be spot on.
      Either way, you're right that the arithmetic doesn't work out - unless the body's rate of ABSORPTION also increases under stress, along with the its base requirements - in which case this should have been mentioned in the video.
      I don't have a stake (or perhaps, 'steak') in whole protein/carb fetishist warfare thing, but I do prefer it when the numbers add up.
