NO ONE discusses his “Pirate Years”. I was a child during this era, but I clearly remember how good the Pirates were in the late ‘80’s-early 90’s w/ Bonds & Andy Van Slyke. Bonds is a HOF just off his Pirate years. He’s literally had 2 different careers (before and after the juice). Great video gentlemen
People talk about his Pirate years all the time.
@@unkledoda420 they do and they don't. They treat it as a cliff note. They'll say he had a hof career while on the pirates and maybe they'll briefly mention the base stealing and the defensive powerhouse he was. But it's not as discussed in depth about exactly HOW great he was those years.

Checking Barry’s reference page, in 1989, before he was even “good,” he had an 8 WAR season. Just goes to show how unbelievable he was even before he began his tear in 1990

Barry is so often vilified. He was a product of his era, I don't think anyone can argue that. He was hands-down , juiced or not, the best player I have ever seen play in my 55 years. I lived in San Francisco all during his career here. I was there the day they introduced him publicly along with new manager Dusty Baker in Union Square. To his fans, despite the way he is usually portrayed in the media, he was really a gracious player. He was not aloof. He was polite and generous. He could be real prickly with the media I'm sure, but he did engage them when he was in the mood and he could be a good interview. Much like his dad, Barry both got a raw deal from the powers that be and also to a degree was his own worst enemy. But no one had an eye like him. They gave him nothing to hit. He was usually on teams with completely anemic hitting expect for him and they pitched around him without even thinking twice. He's got close to 700 intentional walks. That is just mind-boggling. He has more than 2500 walks in his career. Both these are the most in baseball, far and away the most. Of course, don't forget he has both the most career home runs and the most in a single season. The guy was really a once-in-lifetime player. It's ridiculous he's not in the Hall of Fame.
Juiced or not is a ridiculous phrase. He was always a great player but he was a mega superstar only because of steroids. He was a disgrace to the sport and to himself. He should be ashamed of himself.
And what exactly does "a product of his era" mean? He inherited his abrasive personality from his father and most people from that "era" didn't become cheaters.
@@RicoBurghFan The product of MLB selling superstars, of which many were definitely cheating. 80s were riddled with cocaine abuse, and early 90s bred the steroid era.

Then you got Jeff Bagwell and Piazza who are close to certain..That Era is so mixed up just stop and let both Bonds(the game’s greatest hitter ever)and Clemens(who is top 5 greatest pitcher ever) into the Hall!😊

I remember living in georgia at the time the braves and pirates were going at each other. I was 10-12 during that stretch. Braves went from worst to first, and then I learn bonds is about to play against the braves. I couldnt get excited tho. Cuz everyone was braves fans in the family. And if you didnt root for the braves, well let's just say it wouldnt be pleasant. When the pirates lost, no matter what time, I cried in my room away from everyone. Idk why I knew way back then that Barry was special, but I knew and always loved watching him play from the time I was 8 or 9, all the way to the end. I watched every at bat I could. And would do it all again.
Same feeling here. I grew up in sf, 90s... Even as a young Giants fan, I became a obsessed w his stats, his style, the way the media and fans didn't seem to understand his greatness...He was an easy villain for media and fans whenever the 90s Giants weren't winning. He did things that just were so different from any other player. Muhammad Ali is my favorite boxer of all-time, and at times whilst producing greatness, he made it appear as though he wasn't even giving his best effort, just by virtue of him making the sport look easy. Bonds was the same.

I think Bonds would be looked at more positively if he wasn't contemporary with Ken Griffey Jr. because Griffey is a shining example of the fact that you can be THAT good AND be a good, likeable guy AND not be a cheater. Plus they are both legacy players, both black if it matters, they are just SO alike. Because of that Bonds just comes off as evil Ken Griffey Jr.

You either loved Bonds or ya hated him. Me, I loved Bonds as a kid, roids use or not. He inspired me to play special needs baseball in my youth, him and Cal Ripken. So thanks a bunch for this series of videos, can't wait for next Sunday's video!
I think there's a middle ground, Bonds was never my personal favorite, but I did like watching him play, it was hard not to. I never demonized him for the steroids either, freaking everyone was doing it. There was just more heat on him because he was better than everyone else. So I think I'm somewhere in the middle, not a megafan but not a hater either.

Sid's Slide is what we Braves fans refer to it as. Tbh that was a catalyst for the divergence of franchises: Braves and Pirates.
I watched Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS at a bar on Long Island and everyone couldn't believe that Sid Bream beat Bonds's throw. Fittingly for Pirates' fans, that bar is now a funeral home.
This was such a insightful video on honestly a pretty overlooked but significant part of Bonds’ career, great work fellas

Fun fact, and in defense of at least 3 of the teams who drafted before the Pirates, in those first 5 picks in the 1985 draft, there were two future all stars (Will Clark and BJ Surhoff) and one future hall of famer (Barry Larkin)
Wow that really interesting, especially because without having to look I obviously know who picked Will Clark, the Giants! Who go on to I guess either trade Clark or let him move on to Texas in free agency the year they signed Bonds. I’ve always thought, how great would the Giants have been if they kept Will Clark and got Bonds. Knowing what we know about Bonds though, there would never have been enough room in the middle of that line up for 2 power hitting lefties from the same draft class
B. Bonds struck out 100 times once in his career (rookie season as a lead off batter). By his 2nd season, he had a 5.8 WAR. By his 5th season, his WAR was 9.8, which is higher than Ohtani as a pitcher and batter combined as the AL MVP. From 1988 to 1998 B. Bonds WAR was 8 or higher. Since 1990, his OBP was 40% or higher. Forget about the HR, B. Bonds batting ability was out of the charts.

from '86 to '89 Bonds hit lead off and outside of a juiced ball '87 scoring was down in this era, so his power numbers for his age and batting position were actually very good; he finished 7th in NL SLG% at age 23 batting lead off... Bond's '90 MVP was a surprise as Bobby Bonilla had made the All-Star team twice before Bonds and they played on the same team... his first 2 playoffs were brutal as he had 53 Plate Appearances and 1 Double hitting .156... Greg Maddux stated Bonds was easiest hitter to pitch to, if anything was on the line you just walk him... fax!!!

31:47 yup 30 years old here been a pirates fan since birth, dad always had the game on. Have never had the joy of seeing good pirates baseball. Although one memory I have is going to the final game at 3 rivers stadium, got to take pictures and meet all the bucs players.

From what I've read, Barry gets his sense of paranoia and persecution from his dad, who at least had some justification for feeling this way, being a young black athlete in the '60s.
If anyone didn't know, Pittsburgh had the worst record in '88 but were denied a shot at Griffey because of a rule at the time alternating the first pick between AL/NL.

Giants drafted him twice, once out of high school, and as a sophomore in college. He would not sign for less then he wanted, that’s how he fell to the 5th pick later

The biggest thing you missed about early Bonds is that the Giants drafted him in the 2nd round of the 1982 draft out of high school but he didn't sign because they didn't offer him enough money to turn down college. I think subconsciously 10 years later that factored heavily into giving Bonds the big bucks long term. Just Imagine Bonds breaking out even earlier with the Giants, Bonds and Will Clark on the same squad when Will was at his peak would have been absolutely nuclear. 1986 is when Bonds and Clark were rookies then 1987 Matt Williams was rookie (albeit who really sucked) and Kevin Mitchell as brought in at the deadline to play 3B with a couple of vets in the outfield in Chili Davis and Candy Maldonado. The Giants probably in that 1989 World Series if the just offered Barry more money out of high school.
Funnily enough the Giants also draftted Pete Incaviglia that year out of high school as well. 1982 has to be one of the most talented crops of high school graduates in baseball history.
Yea and we know what happened in 1993 when Bonds was traded to the Giants and they won 103 games with Will Clark and Matt Williams. But the Braves had three HOF pitchers!!! Only not to make it to the playoffs. But Magowan and Bonds kept the Giants in SF instead of moving the franchise to Florida.

1993 is one of the best non steroid offensive seasons ever.
It’s not surprising he wasn’t considered a star pre 1990 if you look at it with a pre-analytical lens. He hadn’t hit above .300 his rbis were very low and his highest homerun total was 25. The triple slash was those 3 categories in a baseball fans mind until the late 2000s at earliest
oh,, I do remember the Stargell Parker Pirates beating the Weaver Palmer Orioles,,, oh,, I am not young anymore haha,,, in college when Barry came to SF in '93 weeeee
A massive moment in that infamous 9th inning was Jose Lind booting a grounder at 2nd that would've been an out
as a young Pirate, ya, he was doing all a ballplayer can do at a crazy high level. Barry Bonds continued to do all a ballplayer can do at a very high level.
My absolute favorite player in the 90’s when I was a kid in little league. But I’ll never forget an interview he and Frank Thomas gave for an all star game. Thomas embraced being seen as a role model for the younger generation whereas Barry wanted nothing to do with any of that. Whether he wanted to admit it or not, he was seen as such by kids who loved baseball. The 40 year old me appreciates Thomas’ as a player more than Bonds and I’m glad the Big Hurt has a World Series ring and a Cooperstown Plaque whereas despite annihilating the game and making bucketloads more money Barry has neither.
16 HR for a rookie in 1986 was pretty good, especially for a rookie.
I understand why Bonds began using steroids in ~1998.
He’d been the best player in the sport for over a decade, pacing for an all-time great career, and chasing his greatest of all-time Godfather’s ghost.
He watched for years as inferior players cheated with impunity and without consequence.
He could have stayed clean and retired with a similar career to Mays, but overshadowed in his own era by cheaters like McGwire and Rodriguez.
OR
He could level the playing field with the rest of the cheaters and relegate them all back to chasing 2nd best.
He chose the former, and I don’t hold it against him.
Barry Bonds and Jr were the two consensus best players in the game at the time. Bonds wasn't as approachable or fun as Jr and so people tended not to pay attention. Meanwhile he was ripping up the league even then. But since my grandpa had grown up near Pittsburgh I was aware of Bonds and he was my third favorite player, only behind Ripken Jr and Ken Griffey Jr. He was clearly better than Cal Jr and honestly better than Jr as well. He just didn't have the personality and smile that Junior had and was ignored largely due to that.

ya, Giants bonus too low and dad said college, Giants drafted him out of Serra High School. He was not popular anywhere he went after that. No surprise, he was not popular in High School or on that teem. He did have the coolest convo van of the time at the age of 16. Born of royalty, Barry Bonds did live and grow into royalty. He grew to redefine Baseball Royalty. That, this long time Giants fan will confirm to my last days. Barry Bonds is the best I have ever seen, none doubt.
Ive noticed that Griffey has become the poster child of 90 era baseball lately with the younger generations but most people don't realize that Bonds even before the juice started in 98, still had more homeruns than Griffey from 90 - 97.. He also was a far better baserunner and had a much higher OBP... Bonds was as complete on offense asyou could possibly be.

Ok a few things.
Saying Barry Bonds left "meat on the bone" in Pittsburgh is a little unfair. He was brilliant winning 2 of 3 MVPs when he should've won 3 in a row they gave it to someone else to spite him because he skipped the MVP Dinner. The organization left meat on the bone because they refused to pay their guys and instead began shipping them off
Also In Game 7 when Van Slyke told Bonds to move forward. Van Slyke uses the term "international peace sign" in jest. Barry flipped him off lol

After years of telling my friends I'll finally get into baseball, I finally did it last summer. As a Pirates fan, the shock I had when I learned Bonds was once a pirate blew my mind.

Makes you wonder. If MLB had crackdown on the steroid use with McGwire and canseco would bonds have felt the need to use steroids. I will admit that I don't think he should be in the hall door should anybody else that used, which is a shame because he was on his way there before hand.

Bonds was jealous of Griffey, and then of Canseco and McGwire. He was the best ballplayer of all time in an era that didn't even recognize him as the best in his generation.
Put Tony Gwynn or Barry Bonds in the title and I'm watching. No question.
Barry Bonds used to come down from San Francisco on a yearly basis and pummel my Padres. I hated him so much. As the years has gone, my hate has turned to admiration for what I personally witnessed as no other baseball player has done. I was witnessing greatness without even realizing it back then.
Absolute beast. He's the GOAT, in my opinion.
You guys are too young. Let me help you provide more context. I saw Bonds in person at three rivers in 92 in Pittsburgh and he was already the cream of the crop. What most people don't know or realize is that in the 80's Leyland made the mistake of not moving Bonds down in the order. So Bonds basically was a lead off hitter for four straight seasons. So I'll give his rookie season a pass, but check out his 87 through 89 seasons. Bonds went 3 straight seasons of having 59 RBIs, 58, 58. He led lead off hitters in home runs those seasons. So if Leyland had moved Bonds down in the order in between Van Slyke and Bonilla, say like 4th then he would have had 90 to 100 rbis for three straight seasons. So among position players, Bonds finished 8th in WAR in 1987, 7th in WAR in 1988 and then 3rd in WAR in 1989 because of his great defense. Had Bonds been moved down to drive in runs his numbers would have been even better (may have been 1st in WAR). Now when Leyland did move him down, Bonds batted in the 5th position and started winning MVPs and they started winning divisions. Leyland was great though. They haven't won a division since trading him (sort of like Ruth/Red Sox). In the 90's he finishes 1st in WAR for 7 seasons among position players.
Bonds was upset that Van Slyke was being paid more than him, as Bonds couldn't win his arbitration case two years in a row as he was the best player on the team and the league. He and Bonilla who were finishing in the top 3 in MVPs in the first few years of the 90's and here is a guy who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, so you know he's not going to take it well, so he starts telling management, "JUST TRADE ME". They claim they didn't have the money, but around 8 years later they have enough doe to build PNC park. Pittsburgh has had moments of great foresight (Mario L, Jagr, Steeler coaches, 74 Steeler Draft, Clemente & Stargell, Crosby), but then its had its blunders (not drafting Marino, not signing Bonds, not integrating baseball with some of the Pitts. Crawfords stars, moving out of Forbes Field) etc.
I was a teenager during the pirate years so I remember these years very well. I must say if this is a series, it will be worthless if you don’t spend time talking about how much of a complete sociopath he was. You could devote an entire episode to his antics.

I am one of those people who believe Bonds had HOF credentials before his PED intake so IMO he should be given more consideration by the BBWA. Having said that I also believe his career records should be with an asterisk denoting he used PEDs.

I agree. So many people blame steroids, but the guy is the GOAT. If Barry was an average player, nobody would have paid him much attention. His greatness was both feared and hated. Fans don't waste their time on hating a nobody, and Bonds is easily one of the most hated figures in all of sports history.
