Of all natural wonders in the world, the mangrove is among the most fascinating. For one, it serves as a natural barrier against tidal surges. Secondly, mangroves also purify the surrounding waters, protect the shoreline against erosion and provide a healthy eco-system for the animals and marine creatures that call it home.
In addition to improving biodiversity, mangroves are also effective in scrubbing harmful toxins from the air we breathe and as windbreakers against hurricanes. The Mangrove National Park in Abu Dhabi is no different.
The Mangrove National Park is located near the Anantara Eastern Mangroves hotel. Located near Abu Dhabi’s coastal area, the Abu Dhabi Mangrove National Park covers over 19 sq.km of protected coastal mangrove forests. The park is under the protection of the EAD (Environment Agency Abu Dhabi) and comprises of a whopping 75% of the total mangrove forested area in the United Arab Emirates.
The Mangrove National Park is a hub for tourists who prefer activities that bring them closer to nature. Home to around 60 species of birds, the national park is also a thriving habitat for turtles, marine mammals, and a myriad of shellfish, fish and crabs.
Some of the many animal species to look out for are the Western reef heron, greater flamingo, and the mottled crab. Among these, the western reef heron and greater flamingo can easily be spotted during the breeding season.
The best way to experience the mangroves is to take advantage of the many tour operators nearby. The lush concentration of mangrove trees and the water surrounding is a hotspot for bird watchers, kayakers, paddle-boarders and other visitors looking for a bit of adventure.
