- A sailing trial on the Nautitech 48, with fairly short fetch choppy seas (which never quite show on the camera). Thank you to the team @nautitechcatamarans for my second sail on this beautiful looking craft that confirmed the very positive impressions from my first sail in inclement weather in January in La Rochelle.
As experienced cat owners will know, most cats are a compromise of price vs space vs performance vs quality, in this case I believe Nautitech have got it just right as many press commentators have stated. This new 48 goes back to the core DNA of the brand in building fast ocean cruisers but still with comfortable space and some load carrying ability. With some new carbon bulkheads and carbon strengthening around the mast, Nautitech alongside the late great Marc Lombard have created not only a beautiful boat, but one that is stiff and fast, with an exceptional motion through the water, and yet is easy to sail short handed.
I have sailed many cats, and am a two time Nautitech owner, to be honest I did not expect to be buying a Nautitech this time around, yet this boat really wowed me with its performance, build quality and looks. I have not sailed anything that felt as comfortable in choppy seas, indeed a sail on an Outremer 52 (a great boat also, and one I previously was tempted to buy) that same day, confirmed it for me, compared to the Nautitech although the Outremer was faster, its motion was not as comfortable and nor was it as easy to sail, and on most wind angles I felt the difference was quite small.
I also think this is one of the best looking cats I've seen for a while, and "kerb appeal" does count for something, you want that boat you've just spent your savings on to look like a million ! Interested in other opinions, I'm sure there will be armchair warriors and sailors who disagree, but on a cost vs performance vs space comparison I think the Nautitech scores well.
