well, my W500 still rock even for 2017 usage :) Core2Duo T9600, 8GB of RAM, 120SSD, 15,4" 1920X1200 - 16:10 screen, and switchable graphics intel and ATI FireGL V5700, WWAN 3G, Bluetooth, and so many other benefits that people will not believe if i buy this W500 for less than 250$ in my country..( its still in super mint condition and comes complete with the charger, CD, box, etc )
На старте это была такая мощная машина что с ее помощью можно было ракеты в космос запускать ) ! Но даже сейчас он вполне пригоден для повседневной работы.
Not as weak as one might assume for its age.. About 5 or 6 months ago I bought its high-end cousin, the T400 for about $27 on eBay. Needed little work; thermal paste needed refreshing, and I replaced its original P8600 with a P9700 (2.8 GHz, 6M, fastest medium-voltage C2D made) and gave it a Samsung 850 Evo, and I'm glad I did - trust me it's a pleasure to use daily with that SSD, much better than any cheap modern laptop anyways (and cost less overall even) Oh yeah it had 1 2 gb stick of DDR3; once it arrived I pulled the part number and ordered a second stick. Worked out nicely. Also has the 1440x900 display and they look decent. Now these T400's also have the HD 3470 with switchable graphics, I can't remember if the R400's were ever offered with dedicated/switchable graphics or not. .
Jay Pattyson Awesome insight, yes indeed the R400 had a discreet graphics option. The model was an AMD M82XT with 256 Megs of memory. I'm fixing to go into college and I might be getting another one of these simply because they work!
Watching this video in 2018 on my R400 (c2d p8400, 3gb ram, windows 10), and believe me, this old boy still rocks ! No stutters. (If you have low ram like i have, install a 32bit OS, consumes much less ram. Awesome video btw.
This brought back some memories, as I used an R500 for a while arond 2014 or so. It was Ok, but when I replaced it with a slightly later Thinkpad (a T510), the speed differencr and better screen was impossible to miss. I was used to it, but even on simple tasks like browsing the web, the R500 was pretty slow. Adding RAM helped, but didn't solve all of the problems. If people want a classic Thinkpad keyboard, I advise them to get an x10 or x20 model (X220, T410, etc.), as the speed difference is noticable. Also, while the R series was solid, it was a budget line that lacked the magnesium roll cage and high-end features of the similar T Series. As with the newer L and E budget series, you are better off avoiding them and getting a T, X, or W/P Series for the best quality experience. All that said, it was functional, although now in 2021, it would be pretty marginal, even for web browsing or office work. Since the betrer models are ridiculously cheap too, it would have to be practically free to be worth bothering at all. The R's do run Linux very well (and more quickly than Windows), so it would be a good model to experiment with Linux on.
Nice, I like this comment a lot. I’ve been coming across many of these models over the past couple of years and unfortunately they seem to be the most failure prone, whether it’s the backlight failing or a plain motherboard failure these get used the hardest because of IBMs great reputation but the Lenovo models aren’t as well built
Even in 2018, any laptop with faster core 2 duo is still very usable. Thinkpad 400 or Dell 6400 are some of the best from that era. I have older thinkpads like Thinkpad t43, but these are really obsolete due to slow pentium M and memory limitations.
I have the T500 T9600 processor, 8gb/RAM, a 256gb SanDisk SSD, 1650x1080 display, ATI Radeon mobility 3650m graphics, and a 500gb, 7200RPM Western Digital black HDD in the optical drive bay, running Win7 Pro. I can play games up to The Sims 2, and Mass Effect 3 at reasonable frame rates, and Office 2013. I purchased this computer bare bones for $30+$20/shipping. I did all the upgrades from parts I had laying around. I have LOTS of high, and higher end laptops, and this one will do general computing just as well as my newest, higher end (Kaybe Lake) systems. Other than gaming, it does JUST as well as ANY new system! It's one of my favorite computers. Moore's Law has been pretty dead since around 2009. No longer is your computer "obsolete" after 18 months.
Vista? I hope that’s not your main PC unless you have a lot of files on there and have like an iPad or something for watching videos and reading the news. There are so many security flaws, even down to the gadgets on the right side
Not for nothing....but I don't "believe" in spending the type of money some of these manufacturers ask for. I prefer the ThinkPads from the T400 / T410 / T420 / T430 series. These are the workhorses I use daily when I'm not using my Lenovo Thinkcenter desktop! These laptops are sturdy as h3ll and they run for hours without overheating or causing any kind of discomfort. Not to mention the wonderful keyboards!....(I HATE chiclet keys!....I think that's the ONLY gripe I have with the T430!) Other than that?...once you get one and you goose up all its specs?...you're looking at owning a laptop for a long time! And if you're REALLY adventurous?...and have the technical aptitude?...you can install Linux on one of these and it will last as long as you take care of it! So yeah...I can understand your thought-process in regards to using it for either college, or even a writing-for-work machine. If I could I'd go around and just collect these or the ones that are similar. I know....its not as thin as a MackBook nor as light as the HP Spectre, and it's not as fast or as bright and flashy as the Dell XPS, but its a THINKPAD dammit!...and it's able to hold its own on ANY platform! LoL!
Well I have a ThinkPad t420 and I have converted it into a gaming laptop I connected a gt 1030 to it with a adapter called exp gdc Now it has I5 2520m 8gb ram Gt 1030 Now I can even play most demanding games above 35fps in 1080p
Still use my T500 everday with the T9800 2.9 GHz, 240GB SSD and 8GB Ram. works nice with windows 10 and is very durable, i dropped it 3 times, accidentally spilled water on the keyboard and still works perfectly
I have a T61, as well as a smaller X220, which I use everyday with it having 8gb's of DDR3 RAM, a 500gb hard drive running Windows 10 Pro, and an original 44+ Lenovo battery that gives Me 5.5 hours of medium usage. I love both laptops. But the X220 has the advantage over the T61 simply from being lighter. But the T61 has the advantage of a Dvd drive. Both laptops are amazing. I love their clicky keyboards and trackpoints. My T61 has a 128gb SSD running Windows 7. And the X220 will soon have a 256gb SSD running the same Windows 10 Pro, alongside a partition for Linux Mint.
just got a t60 for 15$, after being basically washed in the rain. Suprisingly, it works when i plug in the ac (seller said he doenst know the laptops condition), just gonna get a battery, better cpu (upgradeable!) and some hdd :) and it came with 2gb of ram on 1 module, i added another gig and have 3 :O. Overall im planning to get under 50$ with a new battery, 3gb of ram, 160gb drive or more and a 2-2;16ghz c2d :)
They do now, and what's more, there's a 16:10 display with the same width as a 14.0" 16:9 display (because they call it 14 but it's actually 14.5. It's matte, it comes from a newish Dell, and it's best resolution, i.e. "as high as possible without needing scaling"). So basically, modern Thinkpads can be 16:10-modded and you only need to cut the top and bottom of the bezel, as opposed to cutting on all four sides.
I want to buy that HP computer that you showed but I want to upgrade it because I am in a budget the one I saw had 2 monitors. I am not really computer experienced. I am scared that since it is a slim it might not hold the parts do you suggest any other small budget computer that I can upgrade.
Hi rickiesdog, the HP computer is long gone, they usually run through pretty quickly. I would assume you're talking about the Elite 8000? While they are small form factor, they support a variety of upgrades: Ram: 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 Storage: 2TB Hard Drive Video card: nVidia quadro 295 NVS Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 These are the most worthwhile upgrades you can get for this machine. If you want to upgrade one of these, I suggest going for a "barebones" system. It's the desktop without any of the critical parts and it's insanely cheaper. That way you can add all the parts you want and save $$$ too. Hope this helps.
Actually, the real reason why you might want to run XP, Vista, 7, or 8 instead of 8.1 or any of the Tens, is because of driver incompatibility issues, with the UltraNav (trackpad/TrackPoint) driver being the biggest bother. Solid machines in this era though.
It’s sad but true. If anything, hard drives make excellent secondary drives in large capacities but SSDs are so cheap now I’m glad we’re over the hump of expensive fast storage. I heard on the news hard drives are expected to stop being produced by 2028
