    Doing as much of the Skyscale collection I can in a day for 4 days, nearly quit doing the jumping puzzles, and had to take more than a month break immediately after getting the mount.

    Kind of a new player myself, my advice to the others would be that there's no FOMO in this game unlike other MMO's. Gw2 provides you the freedom to do whatever interests you instead of whatever makes you stronger because there's very little vertical progression in this game. Majority of performance differences stem from player skill and not gear.

    My only hot take is, boosting to 80 immediately was extremely beneficial to me personally. As someone with a background in MMORPGs and turning everything into a spreadsheet, throwing myself into the deep end really satisfied that itch I’ve been missing. End game content with 10 tabs open on my other monitor, intaking as much information as possible, I really FELT my understanding for the game skyrocket. It’s case by case for sure, but for me, sink or swim in this game was my jaaaaaaam. Your videos have been a regularity in my algorithm because of your information. This game rules, thanks for the content brotha ❤️

      I have played a lot of MMOs as well and I made it about 30ish levels into the main story and popped that damn boost lol. I feel like I’m picking the game up pretty well. I’ve been playing a lot of arena though I haven’t done any of the group PvE content yet, but I did have a 25-0 arena match earlier that felt pretty damn good.

      Like the above comment has stated, I'm also of the opposite opinion. Came over from having played most other mmos as a tank player so not having one here felt really off. I did see you could use dual pistols on a thief and thought that was cool so I played that for a bit... then got told by a max level to "enjoy it while it lasts" as deadeye sucks so I should look into preparing for Daredevil/Spectre instead of "playing with my little guns"

    I have been playing GW2 for about 4 years now and regret not taking the time to spend my mastery points wisely, especially the ones for central Tyria. Sometimes it feels PAINFUL to obtain mastery points on certain maps through achievements. Now I’m learning to enjoy the hunt instead of looking for instant gratification.

    My bit of advice, learn the nuances of one character/spec first. There is likely one spec or elite spec you are eyeing when you start. So as you level that character up learn the nuances of it, the little mechanics it has. Learn what abilities do, which ones give you buffs, which ones take away buffs, is this something that can impact a break bar on a character? Is this move a damage over time (condition) ability? Once you ascertain what you are doing on what character or spec, you will be able to tackle most game content just knowing how to play your character!
    For boosts, I think they are great, but my advice is not using it on your main character you want to play. Roll through the first zones, work on the map completion, work on the story, learn the class. Then when that character is levelled, if you want to try something else, maybe it is boost time!

    • @CaffeinatedDad
      @CaffeinatedDad  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well said! There's alot of complexity hidden in this game that only comes out as you level and experience it!

  • @NicholasBrakespear
    @NicholasBrakespear ปีที่แล้ว +46

    Biggest first-time progression tip:
    There IS a path forward. Do the story chapters as soon as they pop. Do the story version of the dungeons as soon as they pop. This content will feel way too easy and redundant if you progress via map completion, then go back and do the story. And as such, you'll learn some bad habits in combat, and won't appreciate the significance of equipment stats, and you'll hit the late-game stuff and be annoyed when you get insta-killed by a group boss or something. Beyond this, do what you want - but there is an "optimal" path for your first run, to get the most out of the story and the progression system, and that's to actually do the story.
    Biggest gameplay tip:
    Don't use the raptor. Yes, it's awesome. Yes, it feels great. But the core content wasn't built for it, and wasn't designed for you to leap over all the enemies in a zone. You'll miss interesting details, you'll miss out on basic combat experience, you'll find jumping puzzles more frustrating (because you'll be trying to use the mount to cheat your way through jumps) and you'll rewire your brain to think that anything other than a smooth linear path is a frustrating inconvenience, which means you'll resent some of the more interesting zones in the game precisely because they're not built for raptor speed-running.

      @CaffeinatedDad  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Great follow ups! Especially the raptor part! I can appreciate that! It really makes each engagement and journey far more memorable!

    Biggest mistake I made was listening to TH-camrs telling what classes I should and shouldn’t play, I heard the elementalist is hard and you shouldn’t play it as your first character and I took it to heart, but after trying all classes and trying the elementalist I love it, it’s easy for me to play.

    • @CaffeinatedDad
      @CaffeinatedDad  ปีที่แล้ว +4

    • @electricraikou6093
      @electricraikou6093 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those youtubers are stpd click baiters. You can have any spec as simple or as easy as you want to tune it. Obviously each profession has differences and if you try to do something that is the specialty of another class instead of doing the specialty of yours, then it might be harder. In other terms people that say elementalist is hard are trying to use the mage as a brawler, well if you try to use the brawler (say a warrior) as if it was a mage, then you will also find it hard. The game is very open and gives you the option of using your spec as you like, using an analogy in real life you are given legs, you can use them to walk, run, jump, swim or climb, you choose how to use them and they will struggle more at some things, doesnt mean your legs are "hard" to use.
      The other group of people that say elementalist is hard are those that consider that basic reading skills are too much for them to handdle, because elementalist does have a good amount of skills at their disposal, but ask yourself what is harder having 25 skills at your disposal for almost any situation, or having only 15 that you need to make work for the same situations?

    • @electricraikou6093
      @electricraikou6093 ปีที่แล้ว

      So yeah i agree with you, a big new player mistake is believing click baiter yiutubers that only want to create discussion and catch viewers and influence people.

      and you don't want your healer dying to a bosses targeted attack , so that automatically dismisses the tank healer concept .
      gw 2 is learning the juggle, you start small and work your way up, you might be able to auto level to 80 but it doesn't mean you can function the same as a level that's done the work. rotation , knowledge etc is much more important that just dps like it is in other mmos.

    The only reason - and a very good one - to use the level 80 boost is to get all the mounts fast ( you should definitely do that and then IMMEDIATELY return to your starter zone and play entire personal story to learn core class before even attempting elite professions )

    • @riotwrrrwolf4590

      @@CaffeinatedDad In addition : I think it's wise to use the level 80 boost for the gear you get ( apart from the mounts you get to unlock) which will last you a loooong time . But you should use that gear to "level up " by playing entire personal story . Some classes are really complicated when played as CORE class ( examples : engineer, elementalist with the attunements and toolbelt skills ) ,let alone with elite specs . If you can't nail the attunement swapping - or toolbelt stuff - with core class you also won't be able to with elite specs

It actually helped in my opinion, the first thing I did was went through and played the story immediately which is what I recommend new players do if they also used their boost right away like I did. the story teaches you combat and open world content well enough, and gives you a full set of perfectly viable exotic gear to boot. you just need to make the most of it and do your research for what type of content you enjoy beforehand

    I used my boost literally on the day I got it because I wanted to play World Vs World with my friends. It's fun for sure, but I was most definitely overwhelmed by so much information. I was confused on what to do and I was worried about losing it, so I tried to find a way to get it permanently. I farmed to unlock all the mounts in the desert and ended up falling in love with the story of Path of Fire (with the limited knowledge I know, lol.)
    So in a way, I worked my way backwards and experienced the story from the start while experimenting with builds, fashion (and staring longingly at weapon skins.)
    I'm loving it so far! Though I definitely do not recommend to do what I did and boost your character so soon - Going backwards lore-wise gets a little confusing.
    I'm currently playing a Norn from level 1 and experiencing your Personal Story on another side (I started as human) was really cool!

    Not burning the boost early is 100% right. So many layers to class mechanics and the game does a good job feeding them to you in layers as you level - rushing to 80 via boost just puts too many things on the plate at once - which can lead to frustrations because you're not understanding how the specializations and utilities can weave together, etc. and you get curb stomped as soon as you get into a DLC zone.

    • @CaffeinatedDad

    Tip - If HoT is too much of a hassle as fresh 80, start Path of Fire or use a teleport to friend to just get your character to the maps. Can stop that story and go back later, but these zones are significantly easier to get around and rely on mount unlocks to get to new places. As a recent (1 month) returning from LONG ago player. Id give HoT a twice as difficult as PoF stamp. The hero points are much easier in PoF as well, if you have eye on an elite spec.

    • @PapaSMURFFS
      @PapaSMURFFS ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Concur entirely! I took quite a long break from GW2 because I got stuck on HoT and generally frustrated. I found HoT exceptionally challenging (and humbling). Came back with a more casual mindset, and figured I'd skip the rest of HoT and just do PoF as far as I could for the mounts then ignore both expansions. Then I played PoF, found it challenging in a few parts but generally enjoyable (it never felt unfair like HoT often did to me). I will go back to HoT at some point, but agree entirely it almost feels twice as hard as the other level 80 zones.

    • @jackieaung4354
      @jackieaung4354 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's because HOT hero point are made for groups events. While POF made for single player challenge. Do they expect me to have friend? Right now i can solo them with my ascendant gears with fully runes and sigils. But starting after completing main core story was difficult as fuck.

    Hey Caffeinated, I have a question bout GW2 tho it's not that related to the topic of the video. But since this is your latest video, I thought I'd leave it here in hopes of getting a reply :)
    I was using action camera the whole time not knowing that isn't the most optimal setting for combat. Now I'm trying to learn free camera and the biggest trouble I've been having is not using Left-Mouse to auto-attack. So I was wondering if there's some setting or some keybind I've missed or do I just have to get used to pressing 1 (using my left hand) for autos if I'm using free camera?

    • @CaffeinatedDad

    Try different ways and skills so you could learn different ways to play your profession

    I agree with you in all of this, but one point in particular:
    Core Tyria map completion and the main story until lvl 80 can be done with literally ANY class and spec, but as soon as you enter ther Heart of Thorns expansion (the Heart of Maguuma maps) the difficulty spike is tremendous. By this point you absolutely HAVE to be knowledgeable about your class mechanics and what spec or trait does what and you have to have decent gear (exotic or above). Otherwise any mob, not just veterans or champions, but ANY random mob will more or less one-shot you.
    This is coming from someone who played GW2 since the first day of pre-release ;)

    Getting to max level in GW2 is meant to serve as a tutorial, letting you learn all of the game's many systems by introducing them bit by bit as you level up. Don't rush to get through it as fast as possible, or skip it altogether with a booster to get to the end content as fast as possible, as there's no need to for it in the first place. Unlike in WoW where there's little point going back to lower level areas once you've outgrown them, and most people just rush for the level cap to start grinding the new end-game content, GW2 is designed in a way to make all maps playable by all players at and above set level (as in, your stats scale down to match the recommended level for the area you are currently in), so as you level up, more and more areas become available for you to explore, and while there certainly are plenty of things that are only accessible once you hit the level cap, you will most likely outgrow the recommended level for each area as you naturally pass through them anyway, so there's really no need to rush things.

  • @chrebetcrunch

    #1 mistake newer players make, using their end month/monthly chest to get Experience Tomes or lower crafting materials, when they should ALWAYS select Legendary crafting supplies. I made this mistake too. If you play any PvP or WvW you can get tomes very quickly. Even just clearing maps will get you tomes, so don't waste the monthly chest on them. Whether you use the Legendary crafting materials or sell them, it is the best choice, plus it take 11 months of these chests to make just ONE Legendary item. It takes 77 clovers for a Legendary item and you get 7 per chest. The next best way to get Mystic Clover is by playing WvW, or PvP which gives tons of tomes, so always get the Legendary crafting supplies. Even though when you star you may not plan on crafting a Legendary weapon, but in 11 months you may have changed your mind and you will be ready.

    I'm new to GW2. I've created and played through the main story with my first character however I didn't do any dungeons so I created my second character and am now leveling that one through map completion of core Tyria and the dungeons because in the last part of the story it became clear that that's where my mission plot points are at. However I have one question that keeps popping up.
    How do I gear a fresh lvl 80 (without the boost) so it is strong enough to continue through living worlds 1-2 and perhaps even the first expansion?
    I found the wiki page but aside from the few "buy trading post" items, I don't understand where to get it since it talks about game systems as if it's a side note that I should definitely know about and as if I should skip straight to living world season 5 which doesn't make sense to me at all

So I said screw it, I'm just got to use it get the elite specialization I want and pretend like none of this ever happened. If only I knew what I was doing. I still can't use it because of the lack of proficiecy points, and now I feel like this is way to much, and what's worse is idk how long it's going to take to be able to bonk people in the head with a staff. Research and secure a solid open world build FIRST, work on your glassy raid build second. Your open world build is what you will need to run around and acquire all the shit you want for the rest of the game, so do that first. As you improve dip into your raid build more often.

    Yes, ppl in sPvP or WvW may be "salty"
    Yes, ppl in Strike Missions or Raids may hate on you if you don't pump out your ~20k DPS
    But those people will always exist and in all the years since I play Gw2, I've met a lot of them. Sometimes their hate was directed at me, sometimes it was someone else in the group.
    Nevertheless, don't let those ppl ruin your fun. Join another group, you're not depended on them. There are a lot of great players out there, as their is a reason why the community of Gw2 is said to be one of the best.
    I myself had to learn a lot over the years since this game released and now it's time to give that back to other players. And thats not just me thinking like that - there's a whole bunch of ppl in the Community who think like that. And they overshadow the "salty-kill-proof-kickers" by miles.

      Honestly, no. The beauty of gw2 and especially the elementalist is you don't have to be perfect to be effective. Yes there is an optional way to play but that can be said with every class. Most people could care less if you are playing the optimal build "suboptimally".
      I will always be the biggest supporter of llay what makes you happy!

      I'm french so i don't know if i understood all your comment. But honestly i play mesmer (with a man and a woman character), and it's not a profession that i feel "feminine". Because if you play the spec mirage, it look a little like the thief, it teleport, jump and is fast/dynamic. So don't hesitate to try. The mirage mesmer is effective to me, but as Caffeinated Dad say, you don't need to be perfect.
      me i'm not perfect (and play solo most of the time), but the best way is to make the best you can, even if not perfect. No one in the game is perfect. And i prefer a player that is not perfect, but really make his best, than those who may play better, but could insults and be agressive once you make a little tiny mistake (apparently in gaming community, we always consider that gamers knows everything..But sometimes, it's not the case, and sometimes, it's beginners or people that don't know a lot about some part of the game.
      So the key, for me is not to be perfect, but to make your best.

    my mistake was leveling a d/d ele to lvl 40, stopping for a year and coming back expecting to still know wtf any of the skills did. It was easily fixable, I just rerolled as a staff ele and until recent years never looked back. Even to the point of doing 2v2 duels on it ( which was not recommended at the time)

    As a new player I will just say one thing; I 100% agree that comparing GW2 to a previous game you've played is unhealthy and will lead to a negative mindset, HOWEVER I will also say that should not become an excuse for Veteran players to dismiss any concerns that new players might have due to "Oh well this isn't X mmo".
    People shouldn't shit on the game, but they should be allowed to make their observations like any other.

    My biggest mistake was going into a fractal and thinking GW2 had Tank, Healer and DPS roles. If you are healing or dps, do not be shocked if the boss likes you a little too much. There is not tank to take aggro away, so gear up and be ready. Sadly this takes away from enjoying dungeons and raids as it is utter chaos, you can't tell what is a boss mechanic vs another player. And there is NO WAY to turn off other players effects. So good luck! I just refuse to do anything in group. GW2 is a very long, very boring but extreme fun solo play game.
    Save up all your mats you loot, get from breaking gear down etc... max out your bank then sell everything after. Level up crafting, if you are into it, then sell out. You will make so much gold. I just came back after 9 years had 3 gold, here I am 1 week later with 80 gold. So it goes fast. 0-80 takes about 7 hours play time if you do map completions with food, guild and other buffs.

    @grimmjowah6097 ปีที่แล้ว

    not gonna lie i boosted my first character which is my necro (i mainly use reaper but often enjoy harbinger) a while after that i ended up maining rev (mainly renegade but also love vindicator) but i agree with the point boosting early does very much overwhelm new players as that is exactly what happened to me thankfully i have good friends who helped me learn what i needed to know.
    so ya for sure level up normally your first go round it may sometimes feel slow for some people as ive heard this many times in my 5 years in the game now but its worth it for the story which is amazing and also for learning your class much better than you would by boosting it and getting overloaded with tons of info.

    gw2 being so different is why I got into it I was burnt out on ff14 when I started playing and wanted something I could sink a lot of time into but was very different from ff14 for my first like 50 hours I mainly just played it like an open world game I just wandered about doing random open world stuff with no rhyme or reason. I upgraded to exotic berserk set and was using an actual build I was still shocked at how big a leap hot was from core I remember clearly being killed by a pack of tiny raptors mainly cause I was in shock that I was being attacked by a pack of tiny raptors

    Best thing about GW2 i can find after 4 months is : The community is amazing. Nothing like i found in the past 20y playing mmos. This people are realy avaiable to help, they even join your party and do the content with you if you need. There's toxic people everywhere, but in guild wars most of them are in PvP or very endgame content like RAIDS CMs with 1000 Li of kp, so.... You wont find a lot of toxic people as a new player, and that's great. :P

    My main mistake is a skill issue I carry since 7 years already. There are a ton of situations where I can not out-heal the damage I take when not from AoE since it is telegraphed and I can move/evade, there are plenty of attacks I just eat from the mobs and my sustain is not enough. Obviously this is over Elite and maybe few Vets (Mainly in HoT) but since I play 14 different characters each time I switch I go back 10 squares basically to adapt on how to play that class/build sustaining heal over damage. Since I play mostly solo in a lot of situations or maps where not many people is farming it becomes kind of hard, not to even mention trying to make solo runs on Dungeons...

    Nice video. I would disagree on one point however. That GW2 doesn't have a holy trinity. GW2 in raidcontent has pure dps, defense support, offensive support. 100% a holy trinity. What gw2 doesn't have is the classic system of a "tank" holding aggro for the group. but that's all. the holy trinity is absolutlyy active in gw2 imo, it ist just slightly different. In fact, gw2 players claiming that gw2 doesn't have a holy trinity was something that personally confused me when i switched from wow and did my first raids. the first thing i noticed was, wait there is a holy trinity, what's happening? i think it would be more correct to tell new players, yes there is a holyy trinity, you can be a pure dps, an offensive support or a defensive support. but don't expect anyone to hold aggro for you, enemies will come after you no matter which role of the trinity you play.

    • @tbull1663
      @tbull1663 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I see what you're getting at but I have to disagree. Holy trinity implies that there's a tank, dps and healer. The way the "tanking" mechanic works in gw2 is a toughness check and only some raid bosses have a toughness check. Other forms of tanking is 100% mechanical based (like OLC strike) thus making it not true tanking because it's a mob mechanic and not you being the reason for aggro. You can force a taunt on a couple classes but the taunt doesn't last long at all and once it ends mobs go back to doing their own thing.
      So no, there is no true holy trinity. Just classes that can fulfill roles that you previously mentioned.

    • @Dravakar
      @Dravakar ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@tbull1663 I see your point if you break the holy trinity down to "it must have a tank that "holds" aggro" systematic. but that's not how i define a holy trinity. that's just how early mmos adopted it. but the holy trinity originates in pen and paper games, where the most common group systematic was to have a protector, support and damage dealers. but the protector didn't necessairly hold "aggro", his role was to keep the party alive with whatever tools he had. this could be running into the enemy group to draw their attention on him/her, but it could also be done with defensive buffs, healing, distraction. the support improves the overall performance of the group through cc, buffing, debuffing and so forth. and well i think i dont have to explain the job of the damage dealer :D.
      Applying that logic to GW2, for me GW2 100% has a holy trinity. And personally, i don't see the problem in it. I think the GW2 version is different enough to be distinct from most other mmos, but it is not distinct enough to say it doesn't have a holy trinity. I would actually go so far to say, the 2012 version of GW2 was much closer to not having a holy trinity than the 2023 version is. Changes made since 2012 and elites specs added since then in my opinion have pushed gw2 more into a holy trinity than it originally was. I think the reason is that arena net realised, that if all classes essentially have the same role, you limit yourself in the content you can do.
      But in conclusion, it's absoluty fine when people say gw2 in their opinion doesn't have a trinity. i just can't agree :).

    • @firby7341
      @firby7341 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tbull1663 some boss mechanics that choose aggro can be played in a way that the same player gets the aggro all the time (samarog) while for others its completely random (sloth), so you do not always need a tank, but i would still argue that if you tell a new player there is no holy trinity, they will immediately think that there is only dps and everyone cares for themself (since every character has a healing ability) which is in fact misleading for higher end content

    • @tbull1663

    My biggest mistake by far was just not understanding how gold works when I started out, I'd played a lot of mmos prior to gw2 and they all just give you gold for doing things, but not here. So for probably longer than should have been the case I was wondering why I just wasn't getting any gold. I did eventually realize that gold is made through your material pickups and whatnot, but it took entirely too long to get there.
    Now to be fair to myself here, there were no guides on how any of this worked back then, we were all just kinda fumbling around trying to figure out how all this works, but still ... definite mistake there lol

    I did exactly what you said not to do. I started playing about a year ago.. Bought the game because it was interesting and a break from the WoW luls..😂 Saw that I got a character boost, on a Mesmer no less, so I used it. Got to end game, had no idea what to do, turned the game off, uninstalled it, and didn't look at it again until about a week ago. Dragonflight was NOTHING like I thought it would be, Diablo 4 was nothing like I thought it would be. One of my guild mates from WoW says he started playing GW2, so I figured what the hell.. I started playing it for real and understanding that WoW stole a bunch of stuff from GW2, but some how made it terrible..?😂 I'm pretty new to GW2, but I'm loving everything about it!
