About staining beech or other softwoods: A painter showed me a trick using a bit of paint thinner and clear stain and make a thin mixture which is mostly thinner. Apply that over the entire stock, let dry, lightly sand, and apply your final stain full strength. You'l find that it seals the soft grain areas and thighter grain areas such that the final stain applies and dries evenly. Experiment on some similar wood types such as a clear pine
Beech is actually a pretty hard wood. The trouble is, it doesn't want to take much stain at all. The softer spots take a little, but overall it doesn't darken much. A sprayed-on finish seems to be the best way to get an even color.
That is beautiful. One of my personal treasures is a 1968 Crosman 1400 multi-pump gun. You have inspired me to think about doing something custom to that now :)
