    Songs used in this documentary, in order:
    "Boys Wanna Be Her" - Peaches
    "Bad Reputation" - Joan Jett
    "Kiss With a Fist" - Florence + The Machine
    "Maneater" - The Bird and the Bee ft. Shirley Manson
    "Brand New Key" - Melanie Safka
    "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" - Pat Benatar
    "Magic" - B.o.B. ft. Rivers Cuomo
    *Disclaminer*
    (taken from my sister who phrased it very eloquently) The parts in the documentary that talk about derby being a female-dominated sport aren't meant to be a snub toward any men (or transgender or genderless people). I think she just wanted to address part of what drew her--and many others--to roller derby, which is that it was very much all about the ladies, good sportswomanship, the dedication, etc.
    Please keep in mind, also, that this documentary was made over four years ago. Since then, many strides have been made to make the sport more inclusive. Leagues have changed their gender policies to include more than just those who identify as female. Some leagues have even changed their names--for example, the Denver Roller Dolls are now known as Denver Roller Derby, and their affiliate men's league (Ground Control) is great!
    I guess what I'm trying to say is: Yvonne loving women's roller derby doesn't mean she is against men's derby. But of course you are absolutely welcome to like or dislike this documentary, that is your choice. I just wanted to make that first part known.

    I'm a female captain of a men's team. Men's Roller derby is played differently. Men are very shoulder hit heavy while women tend towards the full body or hip check. Men skate backwards more frequently and give out the cross shoulder hits. Both are worth watching, honestly.

    • @spottay212
      @spottay212  8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It is absolutely different strategies because of different body types and even skating style. I find it most fascinating to see co-ed games where both women and men need to adapt their hitting styles based on their target!

    • @Boc3phu5
      @Boc3phu5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would you say a Shoulder check or hip check is determined by the size of the opponent?

    • @spottay212
      @spottay212  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Boc3phu5 I would not say that! Hip checks are going to be more effective at moving and controlling your opponent. Shoulder heavy hits are easier to avoid by shifting your weight away from the hit but hip hits can sweep you off your feet!

      Pretty cool! Most of all, I think it's very validating. I worked really hard, got there, and was just rostered for regular rotation for my first game rather than just being an alternate or bench-warmer. To think I'm "good enough" feels so good. The new challenges are exciting. I like working with charter at practices instead of B and C teams. It's easy to get caught up helping newer skaters rather than honing your own skills. It's a very rewarding thing to do also, but I'm ready for something different, you know? :)

    Nice job with the documentary. I didn't understand roller derby at all, and now I kind of "get it".

    • @spottay212
      @spottay212  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sure. Along with the camaraderie and athleticism, I believe there is a certain "feeling" that comes with falling in love with derby that is the hardest to portray. It's an evolving sport and many parts of the documentary are already outdated despite only being a few years old (namely, that men's derby is becoming more popular) but I think the family aspect and the feeling that derby saved your soul is something that will always be relevant. Thanks for your message!

    I've already posted the link to the documentary. Being in my 60s with physical challenges, I go to as many of the Free State Roller Derby bouts that are at home as I can. The women I have met who participate in this sport, whether they are one of the home teams or a visiting team, all seem happy to have people come out and watch them. Even the few I have spoken with who are on guest teams seem to have real sportsmanship! In addition to supporting the local team, that is one of the reasons I like to watch. Regarding the sportsmanship, you are like the contestants on American Ninja Warrior! I can't think of a better compliment to give to the women I have met in this sport!

      +Laura Lopez Bueno It really has changed so much! It's crazy watching games from just a few years ago and men's teams are becoming more prevalent! Someone commented on champs 2012 and asked why skaters were taking a knee... Oh roller derby!

    • @lauralopezbueno535
      @lauralopezbueno535 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hehe, ah, the knee. Rather the event when it was first seen. I don't know many skaters who were keen on it, really. One of derby's surprising moments. :) Yes, it's interesting to see men's teams getting established and doing so well.

    Great job covering the most important elements of roller derby-- skill, work, and community. It looks like DRD are doing a top-notch job at preparing SKATERS before throwing them into full-contact derby, which is totally important. Thank you! It was mostly difficult to coordinate schedules with interviewing people, that was probably the hardest part. I also didn't have a good lighting source so I often tried to work with outdoor interviews to get natural lighting to help me. I had hours and hours of footage, which was a gift but also a curse in a way. Thankfully, because I loved everything about this documentary, it was easy to stay in focus and not get tired of watching the footage!

    I've asked some of our founding skaters about the difficulties and, boy, were there difficulties. The only advice they could offer was being persistent and asking ANY and ALL venues if you could skate there. A lot of the money to rent our first venue was loaned from the skaters themselves and they had to sell a certain number of tickets to be able to pay back their skaters first before making any money that would go towards a future event. Keep your head up, keep trying, and it WILL happen!

    It's not meant to be taken as, "Gosh, women are so dumb for doing this!" but more like the work behind the scenes in roller derby (especially in a league of our size) can often appear to outweigh the benefits of something as unique as roller derby. It's also not meant to mean that we don't have dedicated men that are equally if not more involved in our leagues.

      Jackie McCloughan I'm not Yvonne, so I can't speak for her. But I am her sister, so I'm going to try!
      The parts in the documentary that talk about derby being a female-dominated sport aren't meant to be a snub toward any men (or transgender or genderless people).

      Julie Phan yeah, even in the old days when men and women were on one team, everyone really loved to see the girls skate and do amazing things.

    Men's roller derby does exist but has not nearly caught on like women's roller derby. There are actually some clips in my documentary that feature a co-ed bout my league held!
