Tricky's story is well told: a kingmaking appearance on Massive Attack's Blue Lines; 1995's peerless debut Maxinquaye; trip-hop touchstone Pre-Millennium Tension; and a string of unpredictable albums tilting from punk to reggae and back again. His latest album, False Idols, arrives on his new label of the same name, and finds him sounding at his most focused since the mid 1990s.
In the second instalment of our anecdote-stuffed two-part interview, Tricky opened up about saying sorry to Björk, unwittingly collaborating with a gay icon, and just what the hell was going on during that infamous Glastonbury appearance with Beyonce.

I can still remember back in 1998, before starting high school, purchasing Maxinquaye. Tricky changed so many things for me musically. Genius.

This guy... Killed his set in San Francisco at the mezzanine, I mean that shit was spiritual, a brilliant bad ass front man and artist... The whole place was in mezmerized. Then to top it off, he somehow just appeared at the exit, drenched and without the usual entourage types or security... I think he shook every hand or hugged the whole crowd, I remember thinking this dude is a legend and not only gave it all on Stage but has the balls to be ihumble and grateful and see us on our way as we left what was his house... We were guests and his mates, I'll never forget shaking his hand, and him saying thank you, this is why he does it... No brother thank you. Keep it Tricky.👊🏾🤘🏾
Ukuu Tafari Preach! Tricky came into the crowd when I saw him in NYC, 2008. He gave everyone big sweaty hugs and like you said, was super humble and gracious. In fact I saw him take a regular taxi to the venue before the show

I loved his music for years but I have never seen any interviews with him before cause I kinda have this principle that based on separating artistry and artist’s personality as much as it’s possible…
But now I feel like I see his Artistry in his presence in full! I’m in love with this man! He’s the True Artist… just like that, with the capital A!

He should not be hard on himself...regardless of the fact of not knowing music theorem. Think about it, he was part of the Wild Bunch (a.k.a Massive Attack)...he brought to Bristol that gritty lyrics, loops and samples. The man is a genius. Favourite album of mine of his, is Nearly God. Plus, he also made a cameo in the 5th Element.
A genius? Really?! I think the man has a pretty good measure of his own talents. He knows his limitations, and makes the most of the raw "musical" skills he possesses. Much of his material hasn't been worthy of seeing a release but sometimes something magical happens and he makes a record like Christian sands. The word genius is much overused these days and I'd say there are very few in "pop" music. Amongst those few, chances are that they are more likely to be producers rather than well known artists in their own right. Now Bjork IS a bit special!
True. She was also in Nearly God---both songs she made there, she remade in Post. Then again, she dated him. I think his best collab was with PJ Harvey

1:46 - I completely agree! I say this to everyone, in fact. When I was little, and learning to sing in music class or even write, I wondered how anyone is able to find their own style, if they are not taught the structure to build their own, but only taught OTHER people's styles. So, that's what I found to be true in the music industry, even in choir in school. All of a sudden, everyone was doing the whole, "Auaaghhauaahghaaaughga" thing... as if they're trying to create "trends" in singing methods as well... I like original. Tricky is a good musician.
For me 5th Element was great and so was Tricky's performance.

He grew up in south Bristol. That's where his accent's from. He's managed not to lose all of it. I shouldn't think he'll be doing a Live at the Royal Oak, Nailsea album very soon - though nothing can be ruled out, I suppose.

dont get me wrong, I love Tricky´s music, but does he really produces his music, or does he just gives ideas and let the real musicians\producers make the music?

Does it necessarily matter? If he picks out the samples or sounds he wants and gives a rough sketch to an engineer does it matter whose hand is on the sampler or DAW? Bowie for example was a great solo artist but he always surrounded himself with great musicians such as Mick Ronson, Mike Garson, or Brian Eno who could help bring out the sounds he wanted or take direction from him to improvise things themselves. I'm sure Tricky can put something together himself, especially being around studios for so long, but it's no big deal if another producer adds their thing to Tricky's ideas.

Maynard James Keenan used to sing with his back to the audience. So did Lana Del Rey. Diamanda Galas performed at least one of her tours in complete darkness because she had to go to Mars. Performance is a very individual thing. Some people have a hard time doing it even though they are driven to it. That stinks about the cancelled shows.
