In the seventh chapter of our British Masters series, John Doran meets Tricky, to discuss missing out on working with Kurt Cobain, and how he came to be onstage with Beyonce.
In Johns words "During the culturally conservative mid 90s of Brit Pop, Tricky represented what it was actually like to be British and living in a city. As his music, fashion, entire aesthetic and philosophy was the product of embracing culture clash - we needed him then to kick against the pricks, as much as we need him back now"

14 brothers and sisters, mum died by her own hand, dad disappeared, grew up in poverty, did crime and time......he becomes a creative genius, tolerant and kind, intelligent, humble, open minded and honest. Total respect.
Really well said, mate.
FireLeo IV lol good one son
^ has a tiny dick
James Barrett you deleted my comment, but for clarity, I was talking to this gutter-mouthed ghetto homophobe.
I mistook it...sorry. Keep kicking against the pricks.
Hearing how happy he is saying “Our daughter is singing now, and she sounds like her mum” is beautiful and heartbreaking.
totally, it brought tears to my eyes hearing him saying that.
Yep, got me in the feels
Oh totally. Such a tragedy because he always spoke so highly of her and seemed a loving dad.
that part at the end makes me always tear up
When I met the guy in Paris, I was in my Massive Attack and Tricky period. And that time he was so nice to me for no reason that, instantly, I felt a very deep respect for both the musician and the human being he is. A true artist.
me too
That's a lovely story. Tricky is fucking based.
I saw Tricky live once. He was contracted to play 45 minutes and they rocked us, a small crowd of maybe 100 people, for well over 2 hours. It was an amazing show.
You lucky basrard x
Nearly 40 now and Tricky has always been important to me, through my post-punk, goth, metal days. Maxinquaye has outlived my walkman, discman, mini-disc and even my mp3 players.
I didn't grow up in his time but I think I will be blasting tricky beats till I die!
I hope you've invested in a wheel of steel by now😉
tricky is a real boss , so real so humble, so down to earth, i hope to work with him one day
same
It's 2023 and I absolutely adore Tricky and listen to him to this very day. He's so next level creative genius.
keanu west....doesnt even know his name...respect tricky you fkn legend
This is the best mistake Diss I have ever heard about anyone.
This attitude calling someone a legend is just dumb. He is still alive. A legend defines someone who has passed away already or is a fantastic story. Sometimes people just talk without even thinking.
@@noahgoyette467that is dumb af the same way. Not everyone one is into dissing. Beisde is dissing very immature behaviour.
"The whole fashion thing is a bit too much." I think I love Tricky even more.
Tricky is a mad genius... one of the greatest creators of music in the world today. I buy every album he puts out and he's still got it.
KEANU West??! Hilarious. Tricky you're a LEGEND. RIP your beautiful daughter.
Tricky is an absolute top bloke, true British master. Him, Roots Manuva and Johny Marr. Great series Noisey. Good work
Wash your mouth out with soap !.
Love Tricky and Martina Topley-Bird ❤!
The loss of their daughter breaks my heart.
man...I'm from Bristol, and this is so refreshing, simply because you just don't hear a Bristolian accent in music haha. It's fuckin bless
Some of my favourite artists are from Bristol though: Tricky, Massive Attack, Portishead...
+Annatar3469 yeah you've just named the big three.
u forgot the wurzels
What artists do you recommend?
@@christhomas9221 They were Somerset.
Tricky is not just a great British artist, he's an amazing international artist. A legend of Trip Hop and a cultural icon in his own right. A wonderful person it seems too. Great guy, wish him all the best.
Love Tricky. He is a genius and visionary.
Also love other Bristol artists like
Massive Attack. Portishead, Smith and Mighty, Roni Size, Allflaws
tricky is a top bloke
Darren Channell yeah, what a classy chap, so humble and down to earth, not a bad word to say about anyone, awesome guy, and of course uber talented.
I love that photo with the wedding dress. It's provocative and unique.
I read a great interview with Tricky years ago when the British hip hop artist Goldie had a really beef with Tricky for some reason (iirc Tricky had shagged Goldie's gf).
One evening Tricky went into a club and Goldie was there. Goldie demanded Tricky to go outside so they could sort it out man-to-man. Tricky refused to go out, telling the interviewer that he's lover, not a fighter and, anyway, he didn't want to ruin the wedding dress he was wearing!
Tricky got his revenge on Goldie with his song "Tricky Kid", from his phenomenal (and fantastically titled) album "Premillennium Tension", that have the lyrics:
Knock out ya gold fronts
That one fronts
Braggin' on your stunts
Coke in ya nose
Knock out ya gold fronts
Which were directed at Goldie. Lesson: don't annoy Tricky cause he will ridicule the best way he knows how; in song.
Pioneer! No one was doing what he was in the 90's.
massive attack. but yeah he is great
Portishead
@@Forestgravy90 Massive Attack wouldn't be Massive Attack without Tricky tho, they collaborated a lot back then. Love the Bristol scene.
@@Forestgravy90 he was in massive attack then
Sorry mate but you are wrong I love Tricky as much as you obviously do but you're wrong ✌️
My jaw literally dropped bc I've known of Tricky for years, but I've never seen him in an interview. His speaking voice is nothing like the way I expected it to be!!
I think he's got a lovely face. I used to sculpt things and I like his appearance.
He'd be ugly if he wasn't so interesting
lonewolfanddog Nah he looked great when he was younger
He has unique and fascinating features. At times he looks ugly, at times handsome, at times both at once. An ugly face with a beautiful soul that shines through.
Brother Tricky you are a freaking inspirations for all the musicians out there looking for their own sound.
Tricky is one interesting guy. People often don't take Tricky and other Bristol musicians seriously because of the accent. People perceive it as country. Bristol has always been one of the most unique and inspired cities in Britain.
Very well said; I was born in Bristol; more than 30 years in East London now. Always stand up for Bristol. I find Londoners that know it actually talk highly of the place but it's the pig ignorant types who think England ends at the M25.
Saw Tricky live at The Fillmore in SF in early 2000s. Absolute knock out punk hip hop acid trip show. Incredible. One of the best live shows I've ever experienced. So much respect for him as an artist.
This guy is so humble, he probably doesn't even know what an incredible inspiration he is and the influence his music has on the alternative scene. Brilliant guy!
Man, some people just radiate humanity and dignity...Tricky’s one of those humans.
What a beautiful, heartfelt comment!
Tricky changed my life
Many of our lives have been enriched because of Tricky.
"It's got to be one of the worst times for music now."
And it’s not any better seven years on.
It got so much worse.
"Can I ask you something, Tricky?" pun intended
Tricky's an incredible ARTIST. Beautiful, Ugly, Violent, Tender, Prophetic...these are a few words that spring to mind when I think about his ART. I've seen him on many occasions starting way back in Bath, and then in the mid 90's at Glastonbury. He had this huge Bass Drum, it hypnotised us; the slow rhythmic beat that was so loud, hypnotic OMINOUS.There were so many people; never thought I'd seen so many people entranced..and this drum...it mesmerised us like sirens to the shipwrecked.
I love his vision of music, a true artist! Nice interview
A genuine human being with genuine talent.
i love how tricky says ip hop
Keyarrrnie West...
Bristol ❤️
Proper job inum =)
das di yaudie in 'im, innit?
I try to stay away from Tricky interviews, but this was simply beautiful. Tricky holds a special place in my heart and this short window into his mind hit the intimated highlights I was hoping for. Sad the interviewer was ignorant towards referencing the overall” trip-hop” movement that Tricky helped perpetuate.
was in HMV Oxford Street one day 20+ years ago and it turns out Tricky's doing a set downstairs! I raced down. It was only 3 or 4 songs, but it was one of the best (of many) gigs of my life. What a presence in the world.
I love the candor! Great interview. I'm a long time tricky fan and I'll certainly check the new stuff now.
There's no one I root for more than Tricky, well deserved of a comeback
Great interview. His last album is just awesome, it's great to have Tricky back on good form again.
Great interview. He's so brilliant.
great stuff ,, glad to discover your interviews
Got to see him with a perfect circle. Before that I had never heard of him. What an awesome guy tricky is. Mad love for you from the USA!
Tricky is fascinating. Had the pleasure of listening to Maxinquaye after some time and my god, its astonishing. His vision was warped AF yet beautiful, original and a little scary. you listen to something like the XX and you realize its maxinquaye scrubbed free of all the odd bits. & hip hop is just catching up to this weirdo.
reymont cantil. Maxinquaye was an extremely dark album and I loved it!
love him....lucky enough to see him live...he is a legend and even if you do not dig his music per se'.....you must know what a genius he is musically....and the respect he has from many.
Sad at the end as he talks about their daughter singing and she passed away recently
Great down to earth interview, good job lads.
"he's slightly insane… great guy, though" lmao
John Doran is a breath of fresh air, thoughtfull questions and no troweling on the compliments with ego maniacs. Not even a whiff of bullshit.Tricky has done the time to write the real sea shanties always interesting.
Fantastyczny materiał! Dziękuję !
Cheers! It's a pleasure to meet artists of such a high calibre...
That closing remark all the more heartbreaking now. Big up Tricky, an out and out legend in the music game.
I never would have thought Tricky would be such a chill dude.
John Doran is one of the best, most knowledgable interviewers out there. Musicians and artists love him.
Tricky is a super master! I have always admire his work.
I was @ Oshega this weekend working with K-OS... Tricky was hangin' out opposite our rider in the artist tent but we never crossed paths...He played @ the same time we were on...he's an amazing artist/gentleman. great interview!
Thanks, great to see Tricky
love this dude. he is so comfortable in his skin!
fav: from False Idols - 'Nothing Matters'
Just rewatched 5th element...gah, I miss him! How exciting it was blasting "maxinquaye"! Great interview!
Tricky is awesome. Thanks for reminding me to keep him my mix.
Tricky is probably one of the most down to earth straight talking guys in the music industry. Absolutely fearless
"porch reekin girl"
He's lovely. A great interview. And I echo 45ounce, what a sound bloke! Still listen to him to this day. Frequently.
What a talent this man is...huge respect!!!
Best one I've seen of these.
Maxinquaye and Pre-Millenium Tension, are one of the best trip-hop albums. I haven't got out that much off his later work. Wasn't as gritty, and dark (IMO), but False Idols, was like a comeback to early days of Bristol sound, and was the only "post-Pre-Millenium" album I liked. Although, his music is polarizing (for me, some albums I love, and some albums i can't stand) , as a person, he's great, calm guy. Would be fun chatting with him.
He's got some amazing people to interview. Love his style of musical integrity. Saying this is the most musically conservative time of the mid eighties is interesting too but I cant agree as I was glued to John Peel and my reel to reel then...
Tricky is beyond awesome. The interview guy is amazing too.
Tricky is an awesome artist* I'm a young cat, and even as a younger cat, always have loved this artist.
One of the strongest artists to breakthrough during the mid-90's in electronic music, for sure.
I once met him and naturally bowed because Tricky, he bowed back, I was amazed! Beautiful man, much love.. my heart brakes to think about your lost, brother 😢
what a great interview
So eloquent and charismatic!
seems so nice!
"Ip Hop!" love it...the genius Tricky calls it "Ip hop"....just beautiful and on another level
amazing!
this is still relevant 6 years later... but whenever someone judges music as a whole, they're really just judging the mainstream. The underground scene, where all music genres find their origins, is never as conservative.
Very talented bloke and totally down to earth. I used to get so wasted listening to "Maxinquaye" back in the 90's, such a groundbreaking record.
I was very relieved to hear him say that about music right now.
i 've watched that show of Tricky and Marta for Arte. and i see that pain in him. so sorry for his loss
the idea of Kurt singing Tricky's lyrics just gave me massive goosebumps. Because I'm old. I remember him killing his career on Night Network with the 'I only care about money' interview. Martina Topley Bird singing his songs is one of the greatest things ever. Also he sampled Portishead about five minutes before they released the song.
do you mean glory box ?
@@LutzTeichmann he heard the loop on the portishead demo tape and quickly put it on his album.
@@Eli_B3000 portishead sampled that too, didnt they ?
Yes they completely ripped it from another tune. When I heard the original I was shocked. Portishead just added the vocal and lyrics. The entire tune is sampled from Isaac Hayes “Ike’s Rap 2”. Search it
th-cam.com/video/jN2l8irYbNE/w-d-xo.html
Love You TRICKY!!!
god... Martina singing Overcome... one of my all time favorite performances.
Top bloke
I could listen to Tricky talk for days...
I always admired these British guys styles
this guy gave me a kiss on the cheek. i was so flattered
Tricky is my hero. Maxinquaye and now False Idols are masterpieces !
Tricky no es una persona. Es una eterna batalla entre un elevado y profundo estado mental de introspección. Pocos entenderán esto. De todas formas gracias Tricky.
Down to earth is this man love him and his art
Much respect for this guy.
Class album. Class guy
Tricky is a genius composer ,I have so much respect for his masterpieces
Real people ! Thank you !
Mad respect.
Dayum Tricky and Kurt Cobain would've made some sick music.
This guy is so real man. He is the only person other than Wilson from Porcupine that calls out Pop Idol, the X-factor. "One of the Worst Times For Music" - So true. You can spend 5 years perfecting your sound, release it, & get NO views, & fade away. Back in the 90's, anyone who showed potential was given a chance to project enough confidence to get on the stage. But now?
None of those Mics worked on the Stage with Beyonce. They do things differently. They all Mime because all the crystal clear vocal lines are heavily processed over days of manipulation in the mixing process. Tricky doesn't need that shit. He is what he is. No Bullshit. UK - Real. USA - Fake. Simple.
To be fair, I've heard a lot of artists criticise casting shows.
Now most of those artist do playback but don't even get bored to do the mimic on the mouth , just horrible. That playback stuff. Milly Vanilly style lol
what a lovely chap
He shook my hand!!
Tricky is truly such an amazing glowing wonderful and just magical person. We share the same birthday! I love you Tricky!
Brilliant interview 😊 Tricky is so real so raw and true which feels rarer in this age of fakery. I feel so privileged to have finally seen him live at The Roundhouse last night, the music and the artistry was mind blowing 👌
What a top bloke!!
