I think Sam was just a tomboy who liked boys and not girls. You don't have to be lesbian or transgender to want to dress like a boy if you are a girl. Just like you don't have to be gay to like pink or wear pink and like to fix you hair if you're a boy... just saying... love is love and people are who they want to be. Nobody can truly change that.
Yeah...I mean, that's true, but I'm pretty positive that he was just a trans gay dude. Idk, in my experience, masculine women don't bind their chest lmao
@@aaron_collenNow that I’m an adult and looking back at this episode…yeah it seems like Sam was coded to be a gay trans man but due to the time and lack of publicity gay trans men and trans men in general had in previous decades it wasn’t as explicitly stated unlike how the victim being transgender was in Daniela.
sailorwinxgirl I would be inclined to agree because while Don was a confused teen who wanted to fit into societies norms yet realised his mistakes and tried to help. Sams father handed Sam over to “fix” a child his raised all his life. I always say when you’re a parent you know know your child. He clearly feels remorse but I mean he watched as Sam was strapped to a hospital bed while she called out for him. Then walked away and didn’t think of coming back but a teenager had to do the rescuing.
You are talking about a different time. It was another world back then. Sam wasn't a pre-op transexual, but she was treated as one. The oppressed 50s was still hanging over people, the free love 70s hadn't reached them yet. Sam was ahead of her time. Its totally acceptable for a guy to be in love with a tomboy now. A lot of guys like girls who like guy stuff. Doesn't make them feel gay. But back then, it did. It was the sign of the times. Girls should wear dresses and have pink parties,Sam didnt
sirensloft my only problem with people saying Sam was just a tomboy is the fact that I don’t know any tomboy who lowerer their voice for a more monotone sound or with the same amount of horror towards dresses or anything that could label them female. Sam on the other had does.
i think she just wanted to dress like a boy or that she was trans-gay which means she feels like a boy inside but still likes guys nothing wrong with either beautiful episode i always cry especially on this and the best friends episode
I think a few people took this episode the wrong way 🤦 nowhere did Sam ever say she wanted to be a boy and hook up with boys, she simply told the principal she wasn't into dresses and makeup.
Yes, but she also changed her name from Samantha to Sam (an only male name at the time), dressed like a boy and didn't want to be called a "lady", so maybe she did want to be a boy.
BE YOURSELF!!!! If you like to cross dress-do it and be happy.I'm a woman with short hair and I love men's clothes. I like the way I look and I would never change for anyone.
The dad really was running out of options. No one was going to accept her that way in the 50's. And he was running out of money switching schools, which wasn't helping anyways. I wonder why he didn't attempt to home school her. Wasn't that done back then?
we can say that Sam was a tomboy or transguy because i didn't see him/herself as a girl, at least not girly one. and there was not as much as visibility of the trans or genderqueer identities at this team than now. it's not necessarily insulting to say he/she wasn't a girl, he/she was something s/he wants to be without any borders, of gender and loving
Oh! Thanks so much! I had no idea what it'd be, I didn't recognize the bottle... but seriously, thanks! and yeah, of course you can see what I'm writing! I actually have four stories I'm writing so far. Uh, the one I have uploaded is on fanfiction (dot) net, it's called 'Or die trying' by shego1142. The longest one I have is 'Make me free' and its what I needed to know what they were drinking for. It's not uploaded yet, but it will be. And, Also, it's not weird at all, actually I'm ecstatic! TY
In my cold case head-canon he went to the lake and killed him self with mix of moon shine, rat poisoning, and bleach, but not before telling rush what happened. Then the epilogue scene plays out with Sam and old Dom reuniting, with Dom's glass art things going to everyone who was in Sams life (except the bully) Her dad, the nurse who helped 'free' her, maybe even the school, maybe he new that the professor chilled out? Whatever. Heart-Canon Dom successfully busts Sam out before the whole brain microwave thing happens and live rebellious ever after
what he couldnt tell that "sam" was a girl and was just a tomboy. he seemed cool about it until she kissed him. the voice too didnt give it away?? she sounded like a girl. so when dom says, im not some queer, that doesnt even make sense. She's a girl!! I'm soo confused.
continued: she is not a tomboy, she is not a confused butch lesbian. Sexuality can generally be expressed on four classes: biological, behavioral, gender identification of self, sexual attraction to. In Sam's case, it would be: female, male, male, male. A straight girl would be: female, female, female, male.
no offense but he was deepining his voice, I dont think any cis person would do that, also he binded his chest and yeah, he COULD be a tomboy, but he was most likely a trans man in the 60s
Everyone is saying Sam was a girl..?? Pretty sure the story went he was a guy in a girl's body who liked guys... So, female-to-male transgendered person. As in.. a gay dude. Beautiful story, I love this episode. Just got into this show with the reruns too. Not a fan of the main cast, but they have amazing stories.
When the doctor was talking to Sam's father he said the diagnosis was "gender identity disorder", an outdated term that was used to decribe transgender people. Sam also heavily "hints"(if you're deaf) at this being the case. My guess is the writers of this episode wanted to market off of the "taboo" of a trans character without actually addressing transgender people, hence them never using transgender to describe sam, and referring to him as "a girl who thinks she's a boy."
Waha...stupid me....for the first 30 seconds I thought Sam was a 14 year old boy.....Never seen this episode, so it kinda confused me.......STUPID ME!!!!!! LOL
aww. poor girl. i wonder... i dont like to say i'm gay but... i do feel attracted to guys like alot, i see guys in a movie and i get excited but not gurls. not once have i ever been attracted to girls but if i was fooled to believe i was w/a guy would anyone think it would work out? has anyone had that experience? its soo much easier to be straight. i really want to like gurls but i just havent met the right one.
sam is transgender... its a confussing subject to understand... but you sorta have to watch the whole episode to understand what is going on during the episode...
J’arrive des années après mdr il vient de passer ce soir je l’avais déjà vu mais cet épisode m’a marqué. Je l’ai trouvé tristement beau. Effectivement c’est bien lui qui l’a étouffé avec un coussin à sa demande à Sam...
This episode broke my heart... I need a paralel world where Dom and Sam end up happily together...
Happy's Café same

It's one of the best episode !

The guy who plays Dom - I think he's the prettiest boy I've ever seen.
There's a Cold Case episode called "Forever Blue" about two gay police officers back in the 60's. A little sad but pretty good.
Kinda miss this show.
This episode and Forever Blue are my favourite episodes of any TV show just because no matter how many times I watch them I still cry.
Where can I get the full episode?
@@ethlynwalcott5911 Roku
They couldn't label what they had, but it was beautiful.

samantha is awesome, it's sad how her life ended... its all her dads falt, not Dom's!!!

I'm sure he regretted doing that considering he's all alone, no family, living in a nursing home.

i love this scene so much and the short haird girl looks pretty asf
This is the only episode that portrayed a super strong message
Not to sound like I'm on the wrong words but I take it as in transgender?
@@blueraccoon1088I take it rea referred the lines "Always be free or die trying" - Dom and Sam - Their last exchange was about letting Sam be free.
amen to that. the ending made me cry.
Dom and Sam- always be free or die trying :)

Yes, but she also changed her name from Samantha to Sam (an only male name at the time), dressed like a boy and didn't want to be called a "lady", so maybe she did want to be a boy.
This episode is kind of my Catcher in the Rye.

he totally didn't. he's just a little confused at this point.
poor guy realized too late he liked her
Linsey Godfrey. Beautiful with short hair and long hair :), but with long hair, she is hard to recognize with her tomboish short hair in this episode.
@sailorwinxgirl it was also the hospitals fault
