Update: Back in July 2020, TH-cam changed how it treats color space information. In the process, it crushed the contrast levels of a lot of videos, deeming them too dark... So yes, YT broke this video and it looks very dark. Just to clarify... This is *NOT* my run. This is a playback of the legendary demo found at: quake.speeddemosarchive.com/quake/qdq/
There isn't one single move, shot, jump or any other action made by these players that doesn't have its purpose in this speedrun. Sure, certain actions require luck and cooperation from the enemies, but the main prerequisite here is perfect knowledge and mastership of the levels. One must literally feel sorry for the monsters, because, as soon as these masters get hold of the Quad damage or Pentagram, it's game over. One cannot imagine how much time and tries it must've taken for these players to reach this speedrunning craftiness, but it is truly a unique spectacle to watch.
That level where he does the whole thing in the time it takes for the invulnerability powerup to run-out, it's starts going right at the end on the last monster, blaah blaah blaah
Love seeing all of the places to position yourself for a telefrag. Also props to these folks for the 100% nightmare. Just as skillful as any%, but in a totally different way.
That gave me anxiety, especially since he could have shot much further from himself in a higher angle to take less self damage. He shot way too close to himself considering how small rocketjump was needed
Thank you for uploading this PROPER, no-bullshit 60fps version. The only bad thing about this is the music, but luckily, when it's playing, it's playing at a low volume. EDIT: I recently recorded an even noer-bullshitter version and put the segments up on my channel.
@@pagb666 watched this insane run for the first time ever yesterday, and now rewatching it all again because i found your 60fps, no HD-bullshit version. thanks!!!
the famous grenade launcher kill 12:04. I am happy that this replay will probably be preserved for hundreds of years as the pinnacle of human skill on mouse and keyboard. And also doom :)
I love Quake, but I'm not the type of player that's so good with reflexes. But I did completed it more than a dozen times on PSP, a couple of times on Nightmare even. Not to mention multiple times on PC, but that's a given.
Yes! Thank you for doing this! (If you make more, I'd suggest setting gl_texturemode to gl_linear_mipmap_nearest and setting anti-aliasing to the max. IMO it's truer to the original while still looking fantastic.)
pagb666 the mip maps get filtered, so there's no "edge" where the detail level changes. Anisotropic filtering improves things even more. But yeah, this mode turns off the texture filtering we all got giddy over when we first saw Quake on our Monster Voodoo 2 cards... what a time that was.
is there a single instance in this run that makes it distinguishable from a TAS??? my god. i mean, i know its not. but holy crap. how is this not a TAS!
Do you compress your vids before uploading them to youtube? How do you get them looking so clean? Could you please tell me your settings/program you use? Thanks m8.
All my videos from ~2015 onwards are straight uploads after recording with Nvidia's Shadowplay/Experience. You should Google for TH-cam's video formats/resolution/bitrate table to get the best settings for your recordings. I'm currently uploading at 4K, which requires 70mbps for optimal results.
It's great to have a 60fps version, but the problem with this version is that it's just way too dark. I honestly have to put my brightness to almost maximum if I watch this with phone, and normally I keep it at 25-30%. You made the contrast/brightness settings so that in places where there's not much light it's very hard to see anything. That's why I prefer watching the normal version with 1.5M views (by wusseh), even though it has only 30fps. It's much more bright and visible
Well... for starters, Quake has always been dark, and one thing I hate is people cranking the brightness to the top in games and ruining them. And tbh, it looks fine in my display, not too dark, not too bright. But thanks for the feedback :)
@@pagb666 Just an update years later, I think I had my monitor setting to very high contrast and a bit dark so it made the problem worse. Seems fine with my current settings :D And no, I don't prefer cranking the brightness way over the top, I just had a difficult time seeing things in the dark spots. And with phone you just gotta put brightness fairly high, but it's not too big of a problem!
@@Huqe Fair enough :) On top of that, last year TH-cam changed the way it reads the color space from video files, so it ruined a lot of videos that no really do look too dark because of high contrast. This wasn't one of them fortunately.

I'm pretty good at Quake. Pretty good. However, this makes me feel like a child who doesn't know what video games are.
This is so absolutely fucking sick. I've been watching this on and again for years and never tire of it.
quake is the definition of skill.
So true!

This counterstrafe skill is amazing
finally a good ole GL quake without that shitty ass shadow/texture/billion color shit

It's segmented, but not TAS

what sourceport is this? the lighting effects are subtle but very nice.
That is DirectQ
thanks bud
nice technic moves
Why no music? This game had a great moody OST
This particular demo doesn't play it, because it's segmented and edited.
@@pagb666 oh, ok.
It's hard to find videos of this game with the soundtrack on, especially speed runs.
it sounds like some of the demos DO have music, just not all of them
There is music it's just low compared to the game noises.
@@XTeMe_dEw1453 oh ok. The OST Itself isn't very loud even maxed out. I usually lower the SFX levels so I can hear the music better.
What engine is this? VKQuake? Mark v? Or something else? (The software style water screen warp gave me that idea that it’s one of those 2)
This was DirectQ
e1m5 very nice quadrun
What source port is this, and if it’s a mod, (I mean the smoothing) where can I find it?
Quake has had texture filtering since 1996 with GLQuake, any port will do. This was recorded with DirectQ, though I'd recommend Quakespasm or VKQuake
pagb666 oh thanks,
But I meant the weapon anims is that a thing with DirectQ?
@@Slayer_The_Rogue That's animation interpolation, most sourceports implement it
