I really liked the idea of the metal star to scare the birds away. I have a problem with starlings pulling out my onion sets over and over again. As for an economical shaker, you can use the shaker lid off a Parmesan Cheese container on any standard mouth canning jar and the lid seals shut when you are done. I use the shaker on a quart jar to put out salt on icy sidewalks.

I buy the rubber snakes at the Dollar Tree & put on my hanging plants, garden, wreaths & railing on my porch. It keeps the birds away for a dollar!

I did that to keep my chickens out of my porch flowers and pots.
For the time I had them, did not need a doorbell because any visitors let out a scream to announce they've seen one of the fake snakes. 😂
Turns out also, chickens eat snakes.... So it did not work for me.

Another tip for protecting strawberries is to put rocks around that have been painted red. I do this before the strawberries come out. Birds go to the red rocks and find they aren't edible. Then when the strawberries come in they think they're rocks so don't bother them.

I use a mustard squeeze bottle bought from Dollar Tree to apply my diatomaceous earth around my plants.

I don’t have a soldering iron… so I heat up a very pointy metal awl over a candle and then melt the holes into the plastic.
Large Parmesan from Costco shakers I use for DE. I use it for my chickens and my gardren.

I use a mason jar and a Kraft Parmesan lid to distribute my fertilizer or diatomaceous earth
My dollar tree has drink pitchers with handles. It has a pour feature or a filtered feature to keep the ice in. I use them for my chicken feed

Our DT has planters with a handle to hang on a wooden fence or deck. The hanging basket, cocoa, Core liners.are good to put in the bottom of a planter for drainage. The potting soil at DT can be used if you beef it up with some nutrients if in a pinch. The fertilizer sticks are not that bad either
Take off the blue lid. Turn it upside down. Put it on a bit of wood and drill, It's easier.
Awesome ideas, and I loved all of them! Never thought to fasten the domes with landscaping stakes. The laundry bag will keep out the birds and squirrels far less expensively than the bird netting. Thanks!

I am blessed with a very large backyard. So I set up a feeding station opposite my garden. I have different bird and squirrel feeders and different levels of water and bird baths. It works very well. ❤
This year the cicadas are hatching down south, with 2 different batches. Those laundry bags are great for the plants. I have used a tomato cage over the plant with the circle part on the ground I bend in the prongs inward or just cut them off and put either the laundry bag or a pillowcase. Make sure you tuck it under the plant pot as well to keep the bugs from penetrating into the plant pot. I had an infestation of these tiny beatles and i had to use the pillowcase to keep them out.

I found some nuggets of good information here! Never thought about the laundry bag as pest protection. we’re expecting a hard freeze tonight, and I have a stockpile of the little wire baskets that I use to help protect my plants from getting smashed when I cover with sheets, but it occurred to me that the laundry basket would also work for bigger/taller plants too. They can be pretty flimsy though, but worth a try.

Enjoyed all your dollar tree hackers. Some I had never thought of. I also enjoy using the dollar tree buckets. Not just for water but also for carting mulch, soil, weeds, whatever you need - for around the garden. The cloche ideas are great as they cost so much in the garden nurseries and catalogs.

Great video, thx. I found by accident, when drilling holes in plastic it seems to be gentler, cause less damage and less mess if you run the drill in reverse. Dunno why? Just works for me.
I take blue car towels and put it at the bottom of the planter to keep soil in and allow drainage. Then i put some sponges with the holes in them and put them on top of the towel. I then put the dirt in. The spinges keep in some moisture for the roots to grow towards. Here in NM it got horribly hot last year. You dont want to over water but you want the plants not to dry out either....
I think dehydrated plants number 1 issue in summer here. Happy gardening
For diatomaceous earth a griiling condement squeeze bottle works well. And always use a mask when using it, as it can be bad for lungs with continued uses. And two small baskets with a small cut out fixed together protects fruit like pineapple etc

For bells I invert a 5 gallon bucket and cut the bottom out.
To that I add cake carrier top, microwave plate cover or a the clear plastic cutting boards to have a translucent lid.
With a white bucket, you don't even need a clear lid, they are translucent enough on their own.

How could I forget , the laundry basket as a hose home what a great idea , and so cheap too . I have one hose laying on the ground and one hose in a broken hose real .

Use a tin pie plate to keep birds away after you got to enjoy the pie. Cut up an out of commission rubber hose for snakes.
They have in the kids section the toy snakes

Love the clothe idea and the basket for hose. I also have used the hose reel and it just rolls off the side and is a pain! Sprinkle repair guy stacked up my brick pad hose was resting on. Hose wasn’t uniform and looked messy.

I use upside down laundry baskets for my strawberries.
Cut off the bottom (watering dish), then the basket is for to hold the strawberries off the ground.

Take the top off and place on solid surface, the plastic lid won’t bend and crack. Of course a soldering iron is great.

Thank you for these hacks. I never really knew how to garden but I do want to try this. I hope I do well with strawberries but how do you keep the birds, bugs or animals from eating them? I have a lot to learn about gardening. What would you say is best for a first time gardener to grow from a container? I was thinking strawberries or herbs or tomatoes and I like these tips because I either tend to kill plants by over watering or under watering so I stuck with no plants. Have a nice day 😊🍓🌼🌱

@@tompatchak8706 this grill was actually a really well made one. It has a 3/4" tubular frame that's really sturdy and it has stainless steel panels . I took the grill off an replaced it with a counter top to bridge the gap. A cheapo charbroil type grill frame would never hold the weight of the lathe.

I would put holes in the bottom for drainage in that basket that you have the water hose in I know that it has holes all around it but if you didn't want mosquitoes coming in it would be better to put some holes in the bottom for drainage
