I think the idea of this was that it was going to be the true ending, where it's revealed that when a real person starts the game they take control over the boy against his will and use him as a tool to kill everything in their path without the boy knowing.
When you get to the end and "slay the final boss" (kill the dragon) the credits roll for you, but for the boy the curse is lifted and he awakens confused not knowing he was used to commit mass genocide, where he must take up the Dragon's Dogma to cure those he hurt.
But then, another player starts the game again (or you decide to replay it for old-time's sake.) which causes "the powers of time to reverse once more" (8:57) where the boy is once again overtaken by the player to kill the dragon, the "final boss", who is actually the boy himself from another time, thus the cycle is infinite.
As long as a game exists, there will always be people willing to play it again, start it over, and kill everything once more.
Funny how similar this is to Undertale's genocide route and Deltrarune's overarching them of the player being separate from the character you play as (Kris) and is actually controlling them against their will.

And I'm guessing that at the end of this scene, you're woken up like in the final game and get that continue screen.
And thus,in this context, you could either continue and perpetuate this cycle of genocide and manipulation furthermore,or stop playing and end the cycle right there.

      @@TrappedBowyer9684Yup.
Basically MOON is a parody of how the monsters in any other RPG like Dragons Quest must feel if they knew the true identity of the player, a malicious time-travelling god who would eternally shift the world backwards anytime evil is defeated, take control of an unknowing and unwilling subject, and puppeteer them into being a "prophesied hero", just to kill monsters and do it all over again for the enjoyment of it.
Hilarious how the creator of Undertale was inspired by this game's PREMISE of helping monsters instead of killing them, but DID NOT actually play the game, then accidentally created a game with the EXACT same moral, and a bad ending (genocide) with the EXACT same twist as this game's SECRET ending which nobody even knew existed until AFTER UT's release.

this ending definitely feels quite out of step with everything else in the game lol. this must have been done especially early on before they switched gears.

There’s a description of the hero during the part of the fake moon (when you play the video game as the character the beginning) in the official Japanese guide that hints at the hero’s link to the dragon.
"I have half the blood of an evil dragon. Oh, I hate this cursed blood." A legendary hero expected by everyone in the world. However, he is a half-dragon who inherits half the blood of the evil dragon, and has both holy and evil powers. He travels to avenge his father, the evil dragon god, who is also the soul of his mother who was a holy maiden. He is ashamed of his birth and cannot be obedient to the Moon Princess

thank you for this. this is sooooooo interesting. the only place that dragon was used in the final game was in that weird dream you can have. I actually fully expected to see it at the end, so I was surprised when I didn't. from seeing this, it seems the game changed a fair bit. as neat as this is, it'd be quite confusing to see at the end of the game as is.

  • @Haganeren

Thank you so much for this !
In the end, i think it's cool they didn't used this ending. By putting all the blame into that one fictional boy, it distract the original subject of the game which is "the player (so ourself) is a monster". I feel like the new ending is a lot more impactful by showing the hero killing everyone you saved to level up which must be the equivalent of the last trial for him... Just like any final dungeon in a classic RPG.
I do regret that they didn't made the monster talk though, it would have been more impactful if we "feel" that they are characters.
    Again, thank you for this.

    • @BoatWithLegs
      @BoatWithLegs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

For sure! Seeing some elements from these scenes appear in another dream sequence or something would have been very cool but ultimately I'm glad the game turned out exactly the way it did. Keeping some level of ambiguity regarding the background lore with the dragon and how the hero came to be really adds to the air of mystery the world has, I feel.
Also I'm glad I could help you check this scene out in English. I think there was something wrong with the emulator I was using, so ideally I'm going to re-upload this sequence soon with less audio clipping. (Hence the unlisted status.)

It's fascinating that the explanation for the hero being the original grandchild in the cursed armor is still there in the Switch version.
I believe Bilby tells you about him and his predicament when he's out drinking or returning from the pub.
Well. there's also every other reference to people confusing you with the original child.

    • @filmsbycalebderosa7116

@@GeorgeNoiseless you're right, he does tell you the tale once the player character shows him the white arrow. It might be because the Switch version is running on emulation, I believe.

@@GeorgeNoiseless though apparently there are a few different theories in the official guide that came out in Japan.
Dr. Hager believe the hero is the kings twin brother: ★ The hero is the king's twin brother theory When the current king was born, the twins were considered ominous, and the king's twin brother was secretly raised in the basement of the castle with an iron mask. The brave was specially treated as an assassin, and he saw his eyes for the first time in this case. It's a story I've heard somewhere
Yoshida believes it is Gramby grandson that had come back with the aid of the white arrow:
★ Brave is grandma's grandson theory
The name of the brave is the same as the dead fortune of grandma who lives on the outskirts of town. The death of my grandson is an accidental death. If my grandmother's grandson was dead and someone's scheme put her on the hero's key ... Bururu, scary story, really.
And Shambles believe it to be a heartless robot created by Dr. Hager:
★ The tuned person is the Lehman theory wearing Yoroi. I don't think he's a real human being. Somehow the behavior is strange, and it's a robot rather than a human being. It's a robot that is faithful to commands and inflexible. Maybe Dr. Heiga is the one who remodeled Lehman.

no i think this concept should have been combined, that the hero is the player, and potater is also the player.....and that by healing the monsters you break the game, because the game is created to have it's conflict resolved, ad for the bad enemies to be defeated. The hero doing what he is supposed to do makes you potater the anti hero. and in fact, you are the bad guy.

i’ve commented it before, but this ending is insanely more interesting than anything the released game offered. Game would’ve had a much more lasting impact and probably would’ve been more successful had the developers continued with this tone. I don’t care what the devs say, the ending of the released game is the storytelling-equivalent of beating the player over the head with a pipe and then asking why their head was in the way, this unreleased ending is more emotionally impactful regarding the actions of the player and is frightening enough to stick with you.

I uploaded this video as unlisted back in September to quickly share this finding with my friends in the Love-de-Lic Lounge + Onion Games Room Discord communities. I had vague plans to record higher quality version and edit it a bit more nicely (including on-screen text, making note of when cuts are made, showing off the necessary GameShark codes, etc.) but I've been far too busy these days and decided to publish it as-is for the sake of keeping it readily available for people outside of those spaces.
